AND SO I STARTED AT DAVID WALKER AND I'VE BEEN AT NUMEROUS CAMPUSES IN CROWLEY I'VE KNOWN MS. TENNISON SINCE MY OLDEST DAUGHTER WAS IN SEVENTH GRADE AT H.F. STEVENS, SHE, MS. SO I KNOW THAT IT'S HELPING SOME, IF NOT ANYTHING. SO THE BOARD GOALS ARE PERFORMANCE GOALS, BUT WE KNOW THAT IT'S KEY TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE GROWING STUDENTS FROM WHERE THEY CAME IN AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR TO THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR, TO THE END OF THE YEAR. SO TONIGHT WE'LL BE LOOKING AT WINNER BENCHMARK AND MAP TESTING DATA. AND SO A WINTER BENCHMARK IS A RELEASE STAAR TEST THAT ASSESSES EVERYTHING THAT THE STUDENT HAS LEARNED UP TO THAT POINT IN THE YEAR AND THAT'S ADMINISTERED BY THE DISTRICT. AND MAP TESTING IS WHAT WE CALL A UNIVERSAL SCREENER. AND THIS IS USED THROUGHOUT TEXAS AND ALSO THROUGHOUT THE NATION. AND WHAT THAT DOES IS OUR STUDENTS TAKE THAT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR IN MATH AND IN MATH AND READING, AND THEN THEY TAKE IT AGAIN AT THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR. AND WHAT IT DOES IS IT'S NORM REFERENCE. SO IT MEASURES HOW MUCH THAT STUDENT GREW FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE MIDDLE OF THE YEAR. AND IT COMPARES IT TO A GROWTH GOAL BASED ON OTHER NATIONAL NORMS. AND THEN STUDENTS ALSO DO HAVE AN END OF YEAR MATH TEST TO MEASURE GROWTH FROM BEGINNING TO END OF YEAR. ALL RIGHT, SO WE CAN GO AHEAD AND GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO PROVIDE SOME CONTEXT ABOUT THE NATIONAL TRENDS THAT WE'RE SEEING BASED ON THE COVID SLIDE IN THE TIME THAT WE WERE OUT FOR VIRTUAL LEARNING. SO I'D LIKE TO JUST PRESENT TWO PIECES OF DATA HERE. THEY BOTH COME FROM UNIVERSAL SCREENING ASSESSMENTS. ONE OF THESE IS CALLED I READY AND I READY IS A NATIONAL UNIVERSAL SCREENER. AND FROM A MCKINSEY ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT I READY DATA SET, WHAT THEY'RE SEEING IS THAT ON AVERAGE, STUDENTS HAVE LOST THE EQUIVALENT OF THREE MONTHS OF LEARNING IN MATH AND ONE AND A HALF MONTHS OF LEARNING IN READING. SO THREE MONTHS OF LEARNING LOSS IN MATH, ONE AND A HALF MONTHS OF LEARNING LOSS IN READING. SO THEN IF WE LOOK AT ANOTHER DATA SET ANALYSIS AND THIS USES MAP, WHICH IS OUR CURRENT SCREENER, WHAT THEIR ANALYSIS FOUND IS THAT STUDENTS IN GRADES THREE THROUGH EIGHT PERFORM SIMILARLY TO LAST YEAR IN READING, BUT IN MATH THEY SCORED FIVE TO 10 PERCENTILE POINTS LOWER. SO ONE THING TO HIGHLIGHT HERE IS THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT THERE'S LOSS IN BOTH AREAS, BUT THERE IS A SIGNIFICANT DISCREPANCY BETWEEN READING AND MATH LOSS. AND ANTHONY, IF YOU GO FORWARD, ONE MORE. ONE KEY PIECE OF DATA TO REMEMBER ON THAT SECOND ANALYSIS IS THAT TWENTY FIVE PERCENT OF THE STUDENTS WHO WERE TESTED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE 2019 SCHOOL YEAR WERE NOT PRESENT IN THE 2020 DATA SET THAT WAS EVALUATED. SO WE CAN CERTAINLY LOOK AT THAT AND MAKE SOME ASSUMPTIONS THAT THOSE GAPS WOULD BE SIGNIFICANTLY LARGER, PERHAPS IF THOSE STUDENTS WERE INCLUDED IN THAT DATA SET. ALL RIGHT, SO THAT GIVES US A PICTURE OF THE NATIONAL TREND AND THEN ON THE NEXT SLIDE HERE, YOU'LL SEE A PRETTY LARGE CHUNK OF TEXT. BUT REALLY THE KEY HERE IS THAT FIRST SENTENCE, AND THIS IS FROM THE CEO OF MAP, WHERE HE SAYS THE DISCREPANCY BETWEEN MATH AND READING OUTCOMES REALLY WAS NOT UNEXPECTED. WE EXPECTED TO SEE THIS KIND OF GAP LEARNING LOSS IN BOTH AREAS, BUT A MORE SIGNIFICANT GAP IN MATH. PARENTS TEND TO BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO READ WITH THEIR CHILDREN AND ENGAGE WITH THEIR STUDENTS IN LITERACY ACTIVITIES. [00:35:02] BUT SINCE MATH IS LEARNED SEQUENTIALLY, IT'S NOT AS EASY FOR A PARENT TO STEP INTO THE TEACHER ROLE. AND ALSO WHAT STUDENTS MISSED AT THE END OF THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL YEAR IS BUILT ON IN THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR. AND SO WE'RE WORKING ON FILLING THOSE GAPS AS WE GO. SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT HOW WE'LL STRUCTURE THE DATA FOR EACH OF OUR FOUR BOARD GOALS TONIGHT WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMANCE ONE OF THE REQUESTS OF THE LAST BOARD MEETING WAS TO PROVIDE CONTEXT. WINTER BENCHMARK 2021 WAS OUR MOST RECENT WINTER BENCHMARK THAT WE JUST TOOK IN JANUARY. AND THEN OUR STAAR GOAL TO MEET OUR GOAL FOR THIS YEAR FOR STAAR IS THIRTY ONE PERCENT OF THOSE STUDENTS PASSING. SO WHAT YOU CAN SEE IS TWENTY FOUR PERCENT OF OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS WERE AT THE MEETS GRADE LEVEL STANDARD IN 1920, AND THAT DID DECLINE TO 15 PERCENT. AND STUDENTS IN THIS IN EIGHTH GRADE MATH ARE GROWING. AND SO WE SEE ONE OF OUR HIGHER WE CAN MOVE FORWARD HERE. ONE OF OUR HIGHER MAP GROWTH TARGETS IS THAT. FORTY FIVE PERCENT. ONE THING THAT'S INTERESTING ABOUT EIGHTH GRADE MATH IS WE HAVE ENTERED INTO A PARTNERSHIP OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. THIS PARTNERSHIP FOCUS HAS FOCUSED SPECIFICALLY ON STUDENT OUTCOMES IN EIGHTH GRADE MATH, AND IT'S VERY TARGETED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR OUR EIGHTH GRADE MATH TEACHERS. AND IT'S SOMETHING THAT WE ARE EXPANDING TO SIXTH, SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOLS BECAUSE WE'VE SEEN THE BENEFIT. AND I THINK WE SEE THAT THE DATA, THE DATA PLAYS OUT THAT BENEFIT HERE AS WELL IN SUSTAINING THAT SUCCESS. SO ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT EIGHTH GRADE MATH? ANY QUESTIONS? AND SO THERE WERE THERE WERE OPPORTUNITIES FOR THOSE STUDENTS TO ENGAGE WITH THEIR TEACHERS VIA ZOOM. BUT THERE WERE SO MANY PLAYFUL ACTIVITIES THEY COULD DO WITH THEIR PARENTS IN THE HOME, OUTSIDE, IN THEIR BACKYARDS OR JUST WHEREVER THE STUDENT MAY HAVE BEEN PARTICIPATING IN VIRTUAL LEARNING. JUST SO THAT WAY THEY COULD GET A NICE BALANCE OF PLAY AND THAT SAME ENGAGEMENT WITH THEIR TEACHERS. AND SO HERE YOU SEE PICTURED, WE HAVE ONE OF OUR [INAUDIBLE] PASSIONS DISPLAYED. THIS IS FROM THE CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTER, WHERE WE HAVE ONE OF THE CAREGIVERS THERE USING CROSS-BREED CURRICULUM. AND THEN IN THE MIDDLE, WE HAVE A PICTURE, ONE OF OUR PRE-K, THREE TEACHERS, WHO HAS ADAPTED THE CURRICULUM AND USE IT AND ALSO USES THE FROG STREET LEARNING FROM HOME. AND SO YOU SEE HER KIND OF ACCLIMATING THE YOUNG LEARNERS TO ZOOM AND HOW TO USE THOSE FEATURES. AND THEN PROUDLY, THIS IS BEFORE CODE THAT IS. SO WE'RE HOPING TO GET BACK TO CELEBRATING GRADUATIONS WITH OUR LITTLE ONES AT SOME POINT. BUT THIS IS A PRE-K FOR A CLASS WHO HAS MADE IT AND THEY ARE ON THEIR WAY TO KINDERGARTEN FROM A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO. AND SO BOARD, I WANTED TO DEFINITELY CALL YOUR ATTENTION TO THE TRENDS IN THE AREA, THESE CURRICULUM OPTIONS, HERE ARE AGAIN OUR TOP THREE AND IT LOOKS LIKE ROCK STREET IS ONE THAT IS HIGHLY FAVORED IN THIS AREA. THE DISTRICTS THAT WE LOOKED AT ARE DISTRICTS THAT EITHER SHARE A BORDER WITH US OR ARE JUST MINUTES DOWN 20 FROM OUR DISTRICT, BECAUSE, AGAIN, WE KNOW IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA THE MOBILITY RATE IS PRETTY HIGH. ARAMARK HOSTED A FOCUS GROUP AND THEY DISCUSSED HOW FOOD CONNECTS WITH CULTURE. THAT ACTUAL, THAT EVENT ACTUAL WAS HELD AT NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, I BELIEVE, WITH THE BLACK STUDENT UNION. THEY, ARAMARK IS ALSO GOING TO BE RETURNING THE FOOD TRUCK WITH NEW ENHANCEMENTS SUCH AS, LIKE MENU ITEMS AND ALSO THE ACTUAL LOOK OF THE FOOD TRUCK IN THE SUMMER OF 2021.
