WE ARE NOW BACK IN SESSION AT 7:47 P.M.
THIS BRINGS US, WE HAD A LITTLE ADJUSTMENT IN OUR SCHEDULE HERE, OUR AGENDA ITEM 3.1
[3.0 Study Session]
ADJUSTMENT TO GPA CALCULATION FORMULA DR.MCFARLAND. MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS DEFINITELY THANK YOU FOR JUST ALLOWING US THE OPPORTUNITY TONIGHT TO PRESENT TO YOU THIS ITEM RELATIVE TO OUR GPA CALCULATION FORMULA.
AND SO I ALSO WANT TO THANK YOU BOARD FOR THE VISION THAT YOU HAVE IN THIS DISTRICT AND MAKING SURE THAT WHEN WE SAY ALL STUDENTS, WE REALLY MEAN ALL STUDENTS.
AND SO IN OUR EFFORTS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED TO HIGH QUALITY INSTRUCTION AND ABLE TO REALLY GET THE BENEFIT OF HIGH QUALITY COURSES, WHAT WE HAVE DONE IS LOOK THE THROUGH A, WE TAKE AN EQUITY LOOK AT ALL OF OUR PRACTICES AND ALL OF OUR POLICIES. AND AS WE LOOKED AT OUR GRADE POINT CALCULATIONS, WHAT WE HAVE IDENTIFIED IS THERE IS SOME OPPORTUNITIES FOR US TO REALLY MAKE SOME SMALL CHANGES THAT COULD HAVE SIGNIFICANT POSITIVE BENEFITS FOR ALL OF OUR SCHOOLS, ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT PRESENTING THIS ITEM TONIGHT.
TONIGHT, WE'RE PRESENTING THIS ITEM FOR YOUR INFORMATION, WILL ENGAGE IN A LITTLE BIT MORE DELIBERATION AND CONVERSATION OVER THE NEXT WEEK OR SO.
AND WE PLAN TO BRING THIS ITEM BACK TO YOU FOR FUTURE ACTION.
AND WE HOPE THAT A IT'S AN ITEM THAT YOU SEE WILL ALLOW US TO DO THE JOB THAT WE'VE ALL BEEN TRYING TO DO. HERE IN CROWLEY ISD.
WE HAVE MS. TRINA HARRIS, WHO IS GOING TO BE ACTUALLY DELIVERING THE FIRST ITEM EXCUSE ME, DELIVERING THIS ITEM.
AND AGAIN MS. TRINA HARRIS IS OUR COORDINATOR OF COUNSELING MS. HARRIS STARTED IN ABOUT THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER, I BELIEVE, LOOKING AT OUR POLICIES RELATIVE TO GPA CALCULATION AND THE POLICIES.
AND I'LL LET HER TALK TO YOU ABOUT HOW AND WHY THE POLICY EVOLVE.
BUT AGAIN, WE HAD A COMMITTEE OF COUNSELORS, OF PRINCIPALS AND I BELIEVE A FEW TEACHERS ON THE COMMITTEE AS WELL.
AND THE QUESTION WAS, ARE THE MODIFICATIONS THAT WE NEED TO MAKE TO OUR GPA CALCULATIONS SO THAT OUR STUDENTS GET THE MAXIMUM BENEFIT FROM THE WORK THAT THEY'RE DOING IN CROWLEY ISD? WE THINK THERE ARE WE HAVE SOME SCENARIOS TO SHARE WITH YOU, AND WE ALSO ARE OPEN FOR QUESTIONS AS WE MOVE THROUGHOUT THE PRESENTATION.
[00:05:04]
MS. HARRIS, ARE YOU PREPARED? IS MS. HARRIS PREPARED? DR. MCFARLAND, WE'RE WORKING TO GET MS. HARRIS LOGGED IN RIGHT NOW.OK, ALL RIGHT. ALL RIGHT. AND SO WHILE WHILE WE'RE DOING THAT, ONE THING THAT I WANT TO JUST DRAW YOUR ATTENTION TO IS THE CURRENT BOARD POLICY RELATIVE TO GPAS AND CLASS RANK.
AND THAT'S EIC LOCAL THAT CAN BE FOUND FOR YOU ALL THAT ARE ONLINE, EIC LOCAL IS OUR POLICY THAT GOVERNS HOW WE RANK STUDENTS, HOW WE AWARD CREDITS, HOW WE AWARD GPA CREDITS.
AND IF YOU LOOK AT THE CURRENT POLICY EIC LOCAL.
MR. KIRCHNER, DO YOU HAVE THAT CURRENT POLICY? YES, SIR, I DID PULL THAT UP AND MS. HARRIS IS LOGGING IN RIGHT NOW.
OK, AND WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO IS JUST REALLY GIVE SOME CONTEXT OF WHERE WE ARE TODAY AND WHAT WE THINK WE NEED TO BE GOING FORWARD AGAIN AS WE HAVE CREATED OUR WEIGHTED GPA SYSTEM AND UNWEIGHTED GPA SYSTEM.
WE KNOW THAT ON OUR STUDENTS TRANSCRIPTS THERE ARE TWO INDICATED, TWO INDICATIONS.
ONE IS A WEIGHTED GPA AND THE SECOND ONE IS ACTUALLY A UNWEIGHTED GPA.
WHAT I LIKE TO DO FIRST IS LOOK AT THE SCALE THAT WILL SHOW HOW WE CURRENTLY WEIGHT OUR CLASSES. AND SO AS WE BEGIN TO LOOK AT OUR AT OUR POLICY FOR WEIGHTING OF CLASSES, IT WILL STOP WITH THE, THANK YOU RIGHT THERE KIRCHNER, WITH THE 2020 GRADUATING CLASS.
WHAT WE IDENTIFIED IS, OF COURSE, ARE OUR CATEGORIES ARE BROKEN DOWN BY ADVANCED, WHICH INCLUDES AP AND ALSO DUAL CREDIT.
WE ALSO HAVE OUR PRE-AP COURSES AND THEN OUR REGULAR COURSES.
AS WE WERE PERUSING THIS THIS POLICY, WE FOUND THAT WHEN WE LOOK AT OUR REGULAR COURSES, IF WE GO ALL THE WAY DOWN TO 70, I'LL JUST WAIT FOR A SECOND IT'LL COME UP.
ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU. IF WE LOOK ACTUALLY, IF WE YES.
WE LOOK AT 70, THIS IS CONSIDERED A FLOOR ON A SCALE.
SO YOU HAVE A FLOOR ABOVE A FLOOR AND A CEILING.
WHAT WE RECOGNIZE IS THAT OUR FLOOR FROM A GRADE STANDPOINT IS A 70, BUT OUR FLOOR FROM A GRADE POINT STANDPOINT IS ACTUALLY A 2.0 FOR ADVANCED COURSES IN A PRE-AP COURSE, IT'S A 1.5. AND WITH A REGULAR COURSE, IT'S A 1.0.
NOW FOR FOR HIGH SCHOOLS, YOU KNOW, THAT WORKS.
BUT WHEN YOU BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT COLLEGE AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT GPA GRADE POINTS AT A COLLEGE LEVEL, WHAT WE REALIZE IS THAT CREATES SOME CHALLENGES FOR US.
ACTUALLY, A 2.0 AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL IS CONSIDERED A PASSING AND IS CONSIDERED A C..
WELL, WE HAVE WITH OUR CURRENT SYSTEM, IF A STUDENT IS IN A BECAUSE THEY MAKE A 70, THERE ARE WEIGHTED GPA IS A 1.5, WHICH ACTUALLY IS LOWER THAN ACTUALLY A C.
IF THEY MAKE A 70 IN A REGULAR CLASS, THEY RECEIVE A GPA OF 1.0 WHICH IS SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER THAN THE C. AND SO WHAT WE REALIZE IS THE SCALE THAT WE CURRENTLY HAVE IS SET UP BASED UPON A STEP SYSTEM.
AND BECAUSE THERE IS A STEP DOWN FROM ONE NUMBER TO THE NEXT, IF YOU START WITH 4.0 AND YOU STEP ALL THE WAY DOWN TO 70, YOU WILL QUICKLY SEE AROUND THE 79.
I THINK THE THE GRADE OF 79 IS WHERE YOU START TO SEE THE GRADE OF 80 IS WHERE YOU START TO SEE THE PROBLEM EMERGE.
ANY GPA WAITING ON THIS SCALE FOR A PASSING GRADE THAT'S LESS A THAN 2.0 CREATES A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE FOR STUDENTS AS THEY ARE LOOKING AT COLLEGE.
AS MS. HARRIS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY WITH OUR COMMITTEE TO LOOK AT GPA CALCULATIONS FROM SEVERAL DISTRICTS AROUND.
WHAT WE SEE IS THAT WE ARE OUT OF WHACK OR OUT OF LINE WITH OUR WEIGHTING SYSTEM WHEN COMPARED TO OTHER DISTRICTS.
AND SO THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THIS IS A PROBLEM THAT WE SEE.
WE FOUND THIS PROBLEM AND WE'RE GOING TO BE SUGGESTING THAT WE MOVE TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM PRETTY QUICKLY.
I'LL NOW STOP AND ALLOW MS. HARRIS TO KIND OF TAKE US TO A PRESENTATION.
BOARD, I ENCOURAGE YOU TO STOP US.
AND SO WE WANT TO, THIS THE ONLY ITEM LEFT.
AND SO WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO STOP US TO MAKE SURE WE CAN ACCURATELY EXPLAIN, THIS ISSUE.
MCFARLAND. GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT HALL.
DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
I JUST WANT TO TAKE THE TIME TO PRESENT TO YOU TONIGHT OUR GPA SCALE ADJUSTMENTS THROUGH AN EQUITY PERSPECTIVE.
SO AS WE ARE VERY GREATLY APPRECIATIVE TO OUR BOARD OF TRUSTEES AS THEY HAVE LED THE CHAMP, THEY'VE BEEN THE CHAMPIONS IN OUR QUEST TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ACROSS CROWLEY ISD ARE MAKING SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE ALL OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE EXIST, THAT ARE PRESENT FOR THEM, POTENTIAL WISE, AS WELL AS OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS, THAT THEY ARE COMPETITIVE
[00:10:01]
AS WELL AS JUST THEIR OPPORTUNITIES WITH COLLEGE AND SCHOLARSHIPS.SO IF YOU WOULD, MR. KIRCHNER, I GOT TOGETHER WITH A TEAM OF PRACTITIONERS WHICH WERE COMPRISED OF SCHOOL COUNSELORS, BUILDING LEADER ADMINISTRATORS SUCH AS PRINCIPALS AT THE HIGH SCHOOLS, AS WELL AS SOME CENTRAL LEVEL ADMINISTRATION HERE.
AND WE LOOKED AT WHAT WE COULD DO TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS HERE AT CROWLEY ISD WOULD ALSO BE JUST AS COMPETITIVE, IF NOT MORE, WITH THEIR NEIGHBORING DISTRICTS.
SO BEFORE YOU, WE HAVE A SCALE WHICH WE ALL VOTED ON AND THIS SCALE IS WHAT WE ARE PROPOSING FOR OUR CEILING TO BE IF YOU LOOK AT THE BOTTOM BOARD, THE 70 IS NOW, AS DR.
MCFARLAND REFERRED, THE 70 IS NOW A 3.0 FOR OUR DUAL CREDIT, DUAL ENROLLMENT, WHICH IS YOU UT ONRAMPS AND OUR ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES, OUR PRE-AP COURSES ARE NOW, WERE PROPOSING A 2.5 AND THE CEILING ARE THE FLOOR FOR OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE TAKING THEIR COURSES. AND ON LEVEL, THE 2.0 IS THE MARKER OR THE CEILING FOR THOSE STUDENTS.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE SCALE, WE WERE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO IMPACT ANY STUDENT EXCEPT IN A POSITIVE FASHION.
IF YOU WOULD, MR. KIRCHNER, GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
SO FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT, THIS IS SHELLY AND SHELLY IN HER JUNIOR YEAR AND SHE'S THINKING WHAT'S ON MY TRANSCRIPT? SHE KNOWS THAT AN A TYPICALLY EQUALS THE 90S, A B TYPICALLY EQUALS 80S AND C'S TYPICALLY ARE IN THE 70S AND ALL THOSE ARE COURSES ACCEPTABLE AND ARE CONSIDERED THE STANDARD IN A SCHOOL DAY. SHE ALSO KNOWS THAT AN A TYPICALLY 4.0 ON A WEIGHTED, UNWEIGHTED SCALE, A B IS TYPICALLY 3.0 ON AN UNWEIGHTED SCALE, AND A C IS A 2.0.
AND WE DON'T GO BELOW THAT BECAUSE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WE DON'T HAVE D'S.
SHELLY HAS TAKEN FOR THE SAKE OF ARGUMENT, ALL REGULAR CLASSES, AND SHE EARNED A 70, SHE FOUGHT HARD AND EARNED 70 IN CROWLEY.
HER UNWEIGHTED GPA, AS PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED, WAS A 2.0 BUT THEN SHE LOOKS AT HER TRANSCRIPT AND REALIZES HER WEIGHTED GPA IS A 1.0.
IN HER NEIGHBORING DISTRICT, SHE TALKED TO A FRIEND IN BURLESON ISD, AND SHE TOO SAID, YES, MY UNWEIGHTED 2.0, AND THEN SHE FOUND OUT THAT HER WEIGHTED GPA, HER FRIEND'S WEIGHTED GPA WAS NOW A 2.2.
SO YOU CAN SEE THE DIFFERENCE IN COMPARISON OF THE TWO.
AND PLEASE STOP ME IF YOU NEED ANY CLARIFICATION.
SHELLY THOUGHT, WELL, IF I TAKE PRE-AP COURSES, IF I WOULD HAVE TAKEN PRE-AP COURSES, WHERE WOULD I HAVE STOOD THEN? AND AGAIN UNWEIGHTED WITH A 70 AND PRE-AP CLASSES, SHE RECEIVED A 2.0.
AND WEIGHTED, SHE RECEIVED A 1.5, WHICH IS A LITTLE BIT CONCERNING TO SHELLY, SINCE SHE TOOK MORE RIGOROUS COURSES AS SUGGESTED BY HER SCHOOL COUNSELORS.
BURLESON THE SAME BECAUSE THE UNWEIGHTED DOES NOT CHANGE, BUT HER WEIGHTED, HER FRIEND'S WEIGHTED GPA WAS A 2.7.
SO THERE YOU HAVE THE 1.5 WEIGHED AND HER FRIEND HAD A 2.7 AT THE SAME GPA.
MS. HARRIS, CAN YOU HOLD ON BEFORE YOU GO FORWARD? SO. IN IN MOST CASES, THE UNWEIGHTED GPA IS ACTUALLY LOWER THAN THE WAY GPA, BUT TALK TO US ABOUT WHAT WE FOUND WHEN WE LOOKED AT OUR TRANSCRIPTS AND WE LOOKED AT THAT RELATIONSHIP WITHIN OUR CURRENT SCALE.
YES, SIR. WITHIN OUR CURRENT SCALE, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS HAD AN UNWEIGHTED GPA THAT WAS GREATER THAN THEIR WAY TO GPA.
AND EXAMPLE, A STUDENT HAD A 2.9 WEIGHED.
AND THEN WHEN YOU LOOK AT THEIR UNWEIGHTED, IT WAS A 3.2 AND WEIGHED IS TYPICALLY PUT INTO PLACE TO MEASURE AND TO REWARD RIGOR.
AND THAT WAS WHAT THE THAT IS THE OPPOSITE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING ON SOME OF OUR SCALES CURRENTLY. I GUESS I'M CONFUSED BY THIS.
SO I MEAN, OUR WEIGHTING SCALE JUST SAYS THAT WE ADD A POINT TO IF YOU'RE IN AP.
WE HAD A HALF A POINT IF YOU'RE IN PRE-AP, AND THEN WE HAVE THE UNWEIGHTED.
IF A STUDENT IS NOT IN AN UNWEIGHTED CLASS AND THEY GET A 70, IT'S A 1.0 AND IF THEY GET
[00:15:04]
A 70 IN A WEIGHTED CLASS, THAT'S PRE-AP 1.5.IF THEY GET A 70 IN AN AP OR DUAL CREDIT CLASS, A 2.0.
SO I GUESS I'M CONFUSED AS TO WHY YOU'RE SAYING UNWEIGHTED IT'S 2.0.
BUT THAT'S NOT IN OUR POLICY RIGHT NOW, IS IT? YES. UNWEIGHTED IS JUST A TYPICAL GPA THAT ALL GPA SCALES, SO ON.
IT'S JUST EVERYONE. SO IF I HAVE RECEIVED THE 90, I COULD GET A 4.0 AND I RECEIVED A 99, I WOULD RECEIVE A 4.0 IN AN UNWEIGHTED GPA.
IT'S THE STANDARD ACROSS THE BOARD GPA.
SO YOU'RE SAYING THAT THIS STUDENT HAS A GRADE OF A 70 AND A 70 IS THE EQUIVALENT TO A 2 .0 UNWEIGHTED AND 1.5 WEIGHTED THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE SAYING, RIGHT? YES, SIR. WELL, I GUESS WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY UNWEIGHTED, THEN, IS THAT SOME.
UNWEIGHTED MEANS IT'S NOT ON THE 5.0 SCALE.
SO AS YOU STATED BEFORE, MR. RAY, THE POINT WAS ADDED TO BE LIKE AN 5.0, 4.0, 3.0, 2.0 SCALE.
WHEN YOU ADD THE POINT ON OUR CURRENT SCALE, THE WEIGHT MEANING WEIGHTED THE HIGHER LEVEL COURSES, DUAL CREDIT, DUAL ENROLLMENT UT ONRAMPS AND A PRE-AP COURSES, THEY START AT 5.0 AND FOR THE SAME COURSES ON AN UNWEIGHTED GPA ONLY STARTED 4.0 BECAUSE THAT'S JUST THE STANDARD THAT ALL GPAS ARE MEASURED AGAINST.
RIGHT. SO DISTRICTS HAVE THE AUTONOMY TO REWARD THE RIGOR AS THEY ENCOURAGE STUDENTS THAT, YOU KNOW, STATISTICALLY, WHEN YOU ARE IN A MORE RIGOROUS COURSES, YOU HAVE MORE POST-SECONDARY SUCCESS AND OPPORTUNITIES.
OK, I GUESS WHEN YOU SAY AND YOU'RE USING THE TERMS UNWEIGHTED GPA IN THIS PRESENTATION, YOU'RE NOT REFERRING TO OUR SYSTEM, YOU'RE REFERRING TO THAT BEING AS SOME OTHER SYSTEM.
THAT BEING THE GOLD STANDARD FOR SYSTEMS, THAT BEING THE STANDARD ACROSS THE BOARD, IF NO EVERY DISTRICT FROM FORT WORTH TO BURLESON, MANSFIELD, ALEDO, ALL OF THEM, THEY'RE UNWEIGHTED GPA, MEANING THEIR STANDARD GPA IS ON A 4.0 SCALE.
OK, SO, YEAH, YOU'RE BUT ALL RIGHT.
OK. WE'RE JUST SAYING, I MEAN, BASICALLY WHAT YOU'RE SAYING MS. HARRIS, FOR CLARIFICATION, WE HAVE THE UNWEIGHTED GPA, WHICH IS JUST WHAT WE USE IN THE STATE OF TEXAS, WHICH IS BASED ON THE FOUR POINT SCALE.
IN THE STATE OF TEXAS ACROSS ALL PUBLIC SCHOOLS, EVERYONE FROM 70 TO 79 IS A C WHICH IS A 2.0 AND ALL THE WAY UP TO A 4.0.
BUT THE WEIGHTED IS BASICALLY DETERMINED BY LOCAL POLICY AND THAT IS DETERMINED BY AT EACH DISTRICT INDIVIDUALLY, WE GET TO VOTE AND DETERMINE WHAT THAT SCALE IS, CORRECT? YES, MA'AM. THANK YOU.
WHAT WE'RE SAYING, BASICALLY, IS THAT OUR CURRENT POLICY.
WELL, IT DID REWARD OR BUMP UP FOR PRE-AP OR ADVANCED COURSES IN DOING THAT.
THE UNWEIGHTED GPA, OR REGULAR COURSE, ENDED UP BEING BELOW THE NORMAL STANDARD OF A 2.0 FOR A 70. IT WAS ALL THE WAY DOWN TO A 1.0 FOR A 70, IS WHAT YOU'RE SAYING? YES, MA'AM. AS WELL AS A PRE-AP COURSES.
BECAUSE EVEN IN AP, IT'S A 1.5 AND 2.0 IT WAS SYNONYMOUS WITH THE SAME UNWEIGHTED GPA ON THE 4.0 SCALE.
SO YOU GOT NO, THE STUDENTS RECEIVED NO REWARDS OR POINTS CREDIT EARNED FOR CURRENTLY IF THEY WERE IN A DUAL CREDIT CLASS COLLEGE LEVEL COURSE OR AP COURSE, IF THEY RECEIVED A 70, THEY RECEIVE THE SAME AS IF THEY HAD TAKEN A REGULAR COURSE UNWEIGHTED.
IN ANOTHER DISTRICT, THAT HAS A DIFFERENT POLICY.
BECAUSE OF A 70 IS A 2.0, IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
SO IF THEY GOT TO 70 IN PRE-AP, I MEAN AP OR 70 IN ANY COURSE, THEY WOULD HAVE GOTTEN A 2.0. THERE WAS NO BENEFIT FOR THEM EARNING A 70 IN AN AP COURSE.
THEY ONLY GOT A 2.0 ON EITHER STATE.
WELL, THERE WASN'T A BENEFIT BECAUSE THEY WOULD HAVE GOT A 1.0 HERE IF THEY GOT A 70.
NO. SO LET'S GO BACK AND MS. HARRIS IF YOU CAN KEEP GOING.
AND I THINK YOU HAVE THE SCALE IN HERE.
AND I THINK THE QUESTION MAYBE THE QUESTION IS ANSWERED WHEN WE ACTUALLY WALK THROUGH THE SCALE. WE'LL HAVE TO PULL THE SCALE UP, BUT I CAN FINISH OUT JUST EXPLAINING A LITTLE
[00:20:05]
BIT. ALL RIGHT. SO SHELLY TOOK ADVANCED PLACEMENT, WHICH IS SIMILAR TO HER TAKING A DUAL CREDIT CLASS. SHE RECEIVED UNWEIGHTED 2.0.HALL JUST SAID, SHE RECEIVED A 2.0 WEIGHTED.
SO THERE WAS NO REWARD FOR HER BEING IN THE MORE ADVANCED COURSE IN OUR NEIGHBORING DISTRICT. SAME THE UNWEIGHTED, WHICH IS THE STANDARD, THE WEIGHT IT COURSE, THE SAME FRIEND OF HERS RECEIVED AT 3.2 ON A WEIGHTED GPA SCALE.
EQUITY IMPLICATIONS, SO AS YOU ALL HAVE LOOKED THROUGH THE LENS OF EQUITY AND SUPPORTED US AND WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO MOVE ON, THIS PLIGHT THE ONE EQUITY WEIGHTED COURSES IN THE CISD POTENTIALLY PRODUCE LOWER GPAS THAN UNWEIGHTED COURSES.
WHEN YOU LOOK ON YOUR TRANSCRIPT, WE DO HAVE BOTH OF THE WEIGHTED AND UNWEIGHTED GPAS THERE. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK, YOU WOULD EXPECT THAT THE WEIGHTED GPA WAS MUCH HIGHER THAN THE UNWEIGHTED. BUT HERE IN CROWLEY, MANY OF OUR STUDENTS THAT DOES NOT MATCH OUR UNWEIGHTED GPA IS HIGHER THAN THE WEIGHTED GPA.
A SECOND INEQUITY, THE CURRENT WAY TO SCALE CREATES A DISADVANTAGE FOR OUR CISD STUDENTS WHEN ACADEMICALLY COMPETING WITH SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.
AND WE ALLUDED TO THAT EARLIER.
SO IN CLOSING, IS OUR PROPOSED SOLUTION EQUITY AT WORK FOR OUR STUDENTS IN CISD.
OUR CURRENT BEING REMINDED AP DUAL CREDIT, DUAL ENROLLMENT IS A 2.0 FOR A STUDENT WITH THE 70, PRE-AP 1.5 AND REGULAR 2.5.
THAT'S AN ERROR THERE, THAT'S SUPPOSED YES, DUAL CREDIT.
I'M SORRY, AND THE PROPOSED GPA WEIGHTED AP DUAL CREDIT, DUAL ENROLLMENT WOULD BE A 3.0, PRE-AP WOULD BE A 2.5, AN OUR CEILING, OUR FLOOR FOR OUR REGULAR ON LEVEL STUDENTS WOULD BE A 2.0.
THIS CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION, IF YOU CAN, MR. KIRCHNER, BRING UP OUR CURRENT GPA SCALE.
AND IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS OR CLARIFICATIONS? YES. WHILE YOU'RE BRINGING THAT UP, I JUST JUST WANT TO ADD TO WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT THE CHANGE WILL WILL HAVE A VERY POSITIVE IMPACT ON ALL STUDENTS, MEANING ALL STUDENTS GPA WILL INCREASE.
AND ACTUALLY THE AVERAGE GPA WILL GO FROM 2.703.
THE AVERAGE GPA AT CHS IS 2.703 WILL GO UP TO 3.249.
AND AGAIN, ALL THESE CALCULATIONS ARE BASED UPON GRADES CURRENTLY AS THEY ARE TODAY.
WHAT WE DO KNOW IS THAT GRADES WILL CHANGE BETWEEN NOW AND THE END OF THE YEAR.
AND SO THIS INFORMATION WILL CHANGE SLIGHTLY.
BUT AS WE ARE TODAY THE GPAS OF CHS IS 2.703 OVERALL, AND IT'LL GO UP TO 3.2499 AT [INAUDIBLE] HIGH THE GPA RIGHT NOW OF 2.7682 WILL GO UP TO 3.2919.
SO WE DO KNOW THERE WILL BE A POSITIVE IMPACT FOR ALL STUDENTS AS IT RELATES TO GPAS.
SO MR. RAY, HERE WE HAVE OUR CURRENT SCALE, THIS IS OUR WEIGHTED GPA SCALE, AND SO THE AP ADVANCED THE ADVANCED COURSES INCLUDE THE DUAL CREDIT, DUAL ENROLLMENT AND THE PRE-AP AND REGULAR. SO THIS.
SO REGULAR IS UNWEIGHTED. RIGHT.
AND I THINK MAYBE THAT'S, I DIDN'T CLARIFY THAT ALL COURSES ARE WEIGHTED, SO WHEN YOU HAVE A GPA, EACH STUDENT WILL HAVE A WEIGHTED GPA AND THEY WILL HAVE AN UNWEIGHTED GPA.
THE UNWEIGHTED GPA IS THE STANDARD FOR FOUR, THREE, TWO.
THE FOR THE WEIGHT IT EACH DISTRICT HAS THE AUTONOMY LOCALLY TO DECIDE WHAT'S BEST FOR THEIR STUDENTS. SO EVEN THOUGH A 2.0 IS TYPICALLY A 70 ON AN UNWEIGHTED GPA IN CROWLEY ISD 2.0 IS WORTH ONLY 1.0 OR OUR REGULAR CLASSES ARE ONLY WORTH 1.0.
OK, SO THIS IS DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY THAN I'VE EVER HEARD.
IS BECAUSE I ALWAYS, THE REGULAR SCALE WAS THE UNWEIGHTED AND THEN WHEN WE ADDED WEIGHTING ON RIGHT THE 0.5, THE 1.0 THAT WAS THE WEIGHTED.
[00:25:02]
SO THERE'S ANOTHER SYSTEM.YOU'RE SAYING THAT WE HAVE TO GPAS ON PEOPLE'S GRADUATE OR WHATEVER THEIR TRANSCRIPTS.
AND SO YOU'RE SAYING IF YOU GET SO IF YOU GET A 91 ON WITH THE UNWEIGHTED GPA SYSTEM YOU TALK ABOUT, IS THAT A 4.0 OR IS THAT A 3.1.
ON THE CURRENT SCALE, IF YOU RECEIVED 91 YOU WOULD GET.
NO, NOT ON THE WEIGHTED SCALE ON THE.
I'M SORRY I'LL STOP CUTTING YOU OFF.
NOW, LET ME JUST GET CLARIFICATION, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO KNOW? ON THE UNWEIGHTED SCALE, YOU WERE SAYING THAT I GUESS IS A STATE MANDATED SYSTEM.
WHAT WOULD IT LIKE A 91 BE? WOULD IT BE? 4.0 IT'LL BE A 4.0.
SO ANYTHING THAT IS A 90 OR HIGHER IS A 4.0.
YES, SIR. AND SO THERE'S NO DISTINCTION BETWEEN THE NINETY OR NINETY NINE IN THAT SYSTEM OR A HUNDRED. NO, SIR.
AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE THE WEIGHTED BECAUSE THAT HELPS US TO DISTINGUISH THE CLASSES OF STUDENTS THAT DID BETTER.
THE KID THAT GOT THE 99 VERSUS THE KID THAT JUST GOT THE 90 OR WHAT HAVE YOU.
THAT IS, THAT IS HOW DISTRICTS ARE ABLE TO DETERMINE VALVES AND FOULS AND THINGS OF THOSE SORTS. OK, I WAS NEVER AWARE THAT THERE WAS THIS OTHER COMPETING GRADING SCALE LIKE IT WAS ON.
THANK YOU. ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FOR ME? ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD FOR MS. HARRIS? WELL, THANK YOU MS. HARRIS. THANK YOU, DR.
MCFARLAND, DID YOU HAVE ANY OTHER COMMENTS, I'M SORRY.
WELL, NO, I JUST WANT TO JUST THANK YOU TO THE TEAM THAT HAS BEEN WORKING REALLY ON THIS.
OUR PRINCIPALS AND COUNSELORS AND AND ALL OF US HAVE BEEN WORKING HARD ON THIS.
I THINK THEY'VE BROUGHT THEY'VE BROUGHT US A A REALLY A WAY FORWARD.
WE WILL AGAIN SPEND SOME TIME PUTTING SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IN.
OUR NEXT MEETING WILL BE ASKING FOR ACTION TONIGHT.
WE ARE NOT ASKING FOR ACTION, BUT WE WILL WE ARE PREPARED TO PROVIDE POLICY LANGUAGE THAT WILL HELP US TO CHANGE THE CALCULATIONS.
IF YOU LIKE TO SEE SOME OF THE POLICY LANGUAGE TONIGHT, WE CAN SHARE THAT OR IF NOT, WE CAN HOLD THAT AND SHARE THAT.
NEXT WEEK, WE'RE ASKING FOR ACTION.
IS THERE A PREFERENCE FOR MANY OF THE BOARD MEMBERS? IF THERE'S NOT A PREFERENCE, I WOULD LIKE TO WAIT TO SEE THE PRESENTATION IN TOTALITY SIR. OK, SOUNDS GOOD.
THAT CONCLUDES THAT AGENDA ITEM THAT WE WILL MOVE TO OUR OTHER CONSIDERATION OF POSSIBLE
[6.0 Consideration and Possible Action Item(s)]
ACTION ITEMS. WHICH BRINGS US TO AGENDA ITEM 6.1.I'M SORRY, NO AGENDA ITEM 6.2, YES MA'AM, EMPLOYMENT OF ADMINISTRATIVE PERSONNEL, EXECUTIVE ZONE OFFICER, OR DO WE HAVE A MOTION? I RECOMMEND DR.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER MOTIONS TO COME BEFORE THE BOARD? UNDER AGENDA ITEM, 6.3.
COMMENTARY OR ANNOUNCEMENTS? NO. OK. ALL RIGHT, WELL, I WANT TO THANK EVERYONE FOR COMING TONIGHT.
I KNOW THAT THIS WAS NOT ON OUR NORMAL TO-DO.
SO THANK YOU FOR MAKING MAKING YOURSELF AVAILABLE.
