THANK YOU FOR THE POINTS OF PRIDE AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATION.
HOPEFULLY, YOU'VE LEARNED SOMETHING NEW TONIGHT.
WE ARE AT AGENDA ITEM 4.0, THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
[4.0 Superintendent Report]
AT THIS TIME, WE'LL TURN IT OVER TO DR. WRIGHT.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MR. ANTHONY KIRSCHNER WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, AND DR. WRIGHT, WE ARE PROUD TO PRESENT TONIGHT SUPERINTENDENT REPORT PROVING THE CASE HERE IN CROWLEY ISD THAT DIVERSITY AND EXCELLENCE ARE NOT MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE.
MEANS THAT WE ARE ENSURING THAT EVERY STUDENT IN OUR SCHOOLS, EVERY STUDENT IS EXPOSED TO THE ENDLESS CAREER OPPORTUNITIES THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO THEM REGARDLESS OF THEIR ECONOMIC BACKGROUND, THEIR ETHNICITY, OR THEIR GENDER, BECAUSE IN CROWLEY ISD, ALL MEANS ALL.
WHAT WE ALSO KNOW THOUGH, IS THAT ON THE NATIONAL LEVEL, FEMALES ARE TYPICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED IN THE AVIATION INDUSTRY.
BUT JOINING US TONIGHT ARE TWO OF OUR PTEC LEADERS WHO ARE CHANGING THE NARRATIVE.
IN PREVIOUS MEETINGS, WE'VE SHARED CHARTS, METRICS, AND NUMBERS, BUT TONIGHT WE WANT TO SHOW YOU THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE DATA.
MS. KIMBERLY RICK AND MS. NIKISHA KIRK ARE JOINING US TO SHOW SOME OF THE TANGIBLE EVIDENCE OF OUR BOARD'S COMMITMENT TO CROWLEY ISD'S MISSION OF PROVIDING OUR STUDENTS WITH EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION SO THAT ALL STUDENTS ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
MS. RICK AND MS. KIRK, I'LL INVITE THEM UP TO THE FRONT.
>> GOOD EVENING, DR. MAYFIELD, DR. WRIGHT, AND ESTEEMED BOARD MEMBERS.THANK YOU FOR HAVING US HERE TONIGHT.
I'M KIMBERLY RICK, COORDINATOR OF PTEC AND CTE.
THIS IS KIRK, OUR PTEC COUNSELOR, AND I ARE HERE TONIGHT TO BRIEFLY TALK ABOUT THE CROWLEY ACADEMY OF AVIATION, TRANSPORTATION, AND LOGISTICS.
THIS PTEC ACADEMY IS A FORM OF EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL AND WE CURRENTLY ENCOMPASS FIVE PROGRAMS OF STUDY, AVIATION MAINTENANCE, AVIATION FLIGHT, UAV, COMPUTER PROGRAMMING, AND DISTRIBUTION AND LOGISTICS.
YOU SHOULD HAVE AN INFORMATIONAL CARD UP AT YOUR STATIONS THERE SO THAT YOU CAN SEE SOME OF THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES WITHIN EACH PROGRAM.
WE HAVE BEEN BUSILY RECRUITING FOR THE PROGRAMS TRYING TO INFORM OUR CROWLEY ISD STUDENTS AND PARENTS ABOUT THE AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS IN OUR DISTRICT.
ADDITIONALLY, WE WANTED TO ENSURE THAT THIS YEAR WE REALLY FOCUS ON FEMALES IN THESE HIGH-DEMAND, HIGH-WAGE STEM CAREER AREAS.
WE WANT TO MATCH STUDENTS WITH THE BEST PATHWAY FOR EACH OF THEM.
WE'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR INNOVATIVE AND EXCITING WAYS TO INTRODUCE FEMALES TO THESE CAREER FIELDS.
>> THIS SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, MS. RICK AND I ARE TAKING 20-25 GIRLS FROM MY MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TO GIRLS IN AVIATION DALLAS DAY AT THE HENRY B. TIPPIE NATIONAL AVIATION EDUCATION CENTER, SPONSORED BY WOMEN IN AVIATION.
THE GOAL IS TO PROVIDE EXPOSURE AND EXPERIENCE TO UP AVIATION OUTSIDE OF THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY.
WE WANT TO CHALLENGE THE GIRLS TO THINK BEYOND THE TRADITIONAL FEMALE CAREER ROLES.
WE ARE HOPING THAT THROUGH THE FIELD TRIPS LIKE GIRLS IN AVIATION AND OTHER EVENTS THAT WE EXPAND FEMALE PARTICIPATION IN AVIATION PROGRAMS. WE PLAN TO HAVE A GIRLS IN AVIATION DAY HERE IN CROWLEY, AND WE WILL START OUR OWN GIRLS AVIATION STEM GROUP.
CONTINUING TO SUPPORT AND GROW ALL OF OUR CROWLEY ISD GIRLS, INTO SUCCESSFUL AND FULFILLING CAREERS OF THE FUTURE.
AT THE EVENT, WE WILL HAVE OUR GUEST SPEAKER, STEPHANIE CHUNG, OUR VERY OWN NATIVE OF DALLAS, TEXAS.
SHE WAS THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN PRESIDENT IN PRIVATE AVIATION AND CURRENT THE CHIEF GROWTH OFFICER OF WHEELS UP. IN CONCLUSION.
>> JUST TO SUMMARIZE, THE GIRLS IN AVIATION EVENT IS JUST OUR FIRST STEP IN FORMING OUR OWN GIRLS GROUP OF THE FUTURE.
[00:15:04]
WE'RE HOPING THAT BY DOING SO, WE'RE PLANNING TO GIVE THE STUDENTS EXPOSURE TO INDUSTRY-RELATED CAREERS AND OPPORTUNITIES, BECOME A PART OF A NETWORK OF PEOPLE WHO WILL ASSIST THEM IN FINDING INTERNSHIPS, MENTORSHIPS, AND SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES.THIRDLY, WE WANT TO PROVIDE OUR GIRLS WITH THE TRAINING AND AVENUES NEEDED TO ENTER INTO THOSE HIGH-WAGE CAREER FIELDS WHICH HAVE ENORMOUS GROWTH POTENTIAL, THUS PAVING THE WAY FOR THEIR SUCCESSFUL FUTURES.
ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR AMAZING SUPPORT THAT YOU'VE ALWAYS GIVEN SEATTLE AND OUR CTE PROGRAMS, AS WELL AS FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO COME TONIGHT AND COMMUNICATE OUR VISION OF PROJECTS JUST BEGINNING.
>> THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE] QUESTIONS?
>> BOARD, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> THIS IS ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL.
WHEN IS THAT FIELD TRIP TO DALLAS?
>> THE GIRLS HAVE ALREADY BEEN IDENTIFIED?
>> WELL, WHAT WE DID WAS WE HAD A MEETING WITH ALL OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL COUNSELORS, AND WHAT WE DID WAS TOLD THEM ABOUT THE FLYER, WE TOLD THEM ABOUT OUR MARKETING PLAN AND OUR VISION FOR ALL OUR GIRLS.
WHAT THEY DID WAS THEY HAD A TALK WITH THEIR STUDENTS AT THEIR SCHOOL, AND THEY IDENTIFY FIVE EIGHTH-GRADE GIRLS FROM THEIR MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT WANTED TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AVIATION.
WE ALSO TOOK STUDENTS FROM OUR CURRENT SEATTLE PROGRAM AT THE CTE CENTER.
>> THE PARENTS KNOW ABOUT THIS AND THEIR PARTICIPATION?
>> YES, MA'AM. I CONTACTED ALL THE STUDENTS THAT WE HAVE ON FILE TODAY TO THE PARENTS TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT TIME WE WERE GOING TO LEAVE, WHERE WE WERE LOCATED, AND SEE IF THEY HAD ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS.
>> ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?
>> I'LL JUST ECHO TRUSTEE DAVIS, TO THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING AND ACKNOWLEDGING THE DISPARITY, THE UNDERREPRESENTATION, AND ADDRESSING IT WITH HANDS-ON IN OUR ACTIVE LEARNING FOR THE GIRLS.
SO GREATLY APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH, MS. RICK AND MS. KIRK, MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. WRIGHT.
WE ALSO WANT TO REMIND EVERYONE THAT TOMORROW IS OUR INAUGURAL STEM DAY AT ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN CROWLEY ISD.
WE STARTED WITH OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS WITH THIS OPPORTUNITY, AND TOMORROW IT CONTINUES WITH OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS, ALL 15 OF THEM.
AS YOU KNOW, IN CROWLEY ISD, OUR STEM PLUS FOR ALL INITIATIVE MEANS ALL STUDENTS ARE EXPOSED TO STEM PLUS PROGRAMMING.
OUR STEM SPECIALISTS AND TEACHERS AT ALL 15 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS HAVE BEEN WORKING VERY HARD ON LESSONS AND ACTIVITIES FOR TOMORROW.
BASED UPON THIS ADA TWIST SCIENTIST BOOK SERIES.
I DO NOT KNOW IF YOU HAVE HEARD OF ADA, BUT SHE IS INCREDIBLE, AND ALL OF OUR STUDENTS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL HAVE LESSONS BASED ON HER BOOKS.
THESE ARE NEW YORK'S TIMES BESTSELLERS.
IT'S A STORY OF ADA, WHO CHAMPIONS STEM WITH GIRL POWER, AND SHOWING WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE TO HAVE UNDERREPRESENTED POPULATIONS IN STEM FIELDS.
ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS WILL TAKE PART IN THIS TOMORROW.
THIS WILL ACTUALLY BE HAPPENING ONCE EVERY SIX WEEKS ON THE FINAL DAY OF THE MARKETING PERIOD.
THIS IS JUST THE FIRST OF MANY IN THE FUTURE.
WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO INVITE YOU AND OTHER COMMUNITY MEMBERS OUT TO JOIN US AT ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
TOMORROW MORNING CROWLEY ISD WILL BE FEATURED ON CHANNEL 5, AS PART OF THIS STEM DAY.
WATCH YOUR EARLY MORNING NEWSCAST TOMORROW, WE'LL BE EXCITED TO BRING BACK A REPORT AND INFORMATION ABOUT FUTURE STEM DAYS ACROSS OUR DISTRICT. ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT? THANK YOU ALL.
>> AT THIS TIME WE ARE AT AGENDA ITEM 5.1,
[5.0 Recognition Item(s)]
THE HEARTBEAT TEAM AWARD WINNER, DR. WRIGHT.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MR. KIRSCHNER WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> THANK YOU, DR. WRIGHT, DR. MAYFIELD, AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
WE ARE VERY EXCITED BECAUSE OUR MONTHLY HEARTBEAT TEAM AWARD IS BACK FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR.
OUR FIRST WINNER OF THE MONTH WAS AT OAKMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
WE'RE GOING TO WATCH A VIDEO ABOUT THIS WINNER AND THEN HEAR FROM HER IN A MINUTE. WATCH THIS.
>> [NOISE] [APPLAUSE] SURPRISE. MS. FARRELL, COME ON IN.
MS. FARRELL IS THE HEARTBEAT WINNER FOR ALL OF CROWLEY ISD.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE]
>> CONGRATULATIONS MS. FARRELL, WE ARE SO PROUD OF WHAT YOU'VE DONE FOR CROWLEY ISD,
[00:20:04]
AND WHAT YOU DO FOR YOUR STUDENTS EVERY DAY.>> NOW I HEARD THAT YOU HAVE A SPECIAL GIFT.
>> I HEARD THAT YOU ARE LIKE ARETHA FRANKLIN IN DISGUISE.
[LAUGHTER] SO WE GOING TO WANT A SONG FROM YOU.
>> IT IS SO EASY FOR US TO SEE WHY MS. FARRELL IS A RAY OF SUNSHINE HERE AT OAKMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
SHE HAS TURNED MORNING DUTY INTO AN EXTRAORDINARY WELCOME CENTER, WHERE SHE GREETS ALL OF THE STUDENTS WITH SMILES AND LOTS OF WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT.
DURING THE SCHOOL DAY SHE'S ALL ACROSS THIS BUILDING WORKING PATIENTLY WITH STUDENTS, AND THEIR STUDENTS' EYES LIGHT UP WITH A LOVE FOR LEARNING WHEN THEY SEE YOU MS. FARRELL.
WE ARE SO PROUD TO SELECT YOU AS OUR NEWEST HEARTBEAT TEAM AWARD WINNER.
>> MS. FARRELL IS SO DESERVING OF THE HEARTBEAT TEAM AWARD, JUST DUE TO HER BEING, SHE'S LIKE THE MOTHER OF OAKMONT.
SHE HAS A TRUE, GENUINE HEART, A HAPPY BEAUTIFUL SPIRIT THAT EVERYONE CAN JUST SIMPLY GRAVITATE TO.
>> HOW ARE YOU? HI, SISSY, GOOD MORNING.
>> I LOVE HOW SHE KNOWS EVERY CHILD THAT COMES THROUGH THAT DOOR BY NAME.
SHE HIGH-FIVES, AND SHE IS LAUGHING.
SHE IS SINGING WITH SOME OF THEM, AND THEIR FACES JUST LIGHT UP WITH JOY.
SHE GIVES THEM SUCH A GREAT START EVERY MORNING.
THE THING THAT MADE ME NOMINATE HER WAS THAT EVERY NOW AND THEN YOU SEE THAT CHILD THAT COMES IN AND YOU SEE THAT LOOK ON THEIR FACE, AND YOU KNOW THAT THEY DID NOT HAVE A GOOD NIGHT, OR THEY ARE NOT HAVING A GOOD MORNING, IT'S ALL THERE.
SHE PUTS HER ARMS AROUND THEM, SHE LEANS DOWN, SHE WHISPERS, "IT'S GOING TO BE OKAY, AND I'M GOING TO COME SEE YOU LATER TODAY." I LOVE THAT ABOUT HER, THAT SHE HAS THAT ABILITY TO MAYBE BE THAT ONE PERSON TODAY THAT THAT CHILD IS GOING TO GET TO TALK TO ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON IN THEIR LIVES.
HERE AT OAKMONT, I AM A COLLABORATIVE INSTRUCTION TEACHER, I WORK WITH STUDENTS WHO ARE ELIGIBLE FOR SERVICES WITH IEP, SO SPECIAL EDUCATION, THAT SPECIFY IN MATH, FOR THE MOST PART, FOR K-5.
WHEN I GO INSIDE THE CLASSROOMS TO DO SERVICES AND TO OFFER MY SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS, I DO HAVE A CASELOAD, BUT DURING THAT TIME I AM ALSO SUPPORTING ALL STUDENTS.
>> SHE'S DEFINITELY BIG ON GROWING STUDENTS NO MATTER WHAT LEVEL THEY CURRENTLY ARE IN, WHETHER IT'S THEIR GEN ED OR IF THEY ARE IN THE COLLABORATIVE INSTRUCTION CLASSROOM SETTING.
SHE'S A BIG IMPACT, A BIG FORCE WHEN IT COMES TO STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT, AS WELL AS SHOWING THE LOVE.
>> HOW MANY MORE SECONDS FASTER WAS JAKE FAN OUT OF LINE?
>> WHEN I WORK WITH HER IT JUST GIVES ME A LOT OF CONFIDENCE TO BE ABLE TO KNOW THAT I CAN DO IT.
>> WHEN YOU SEE THAT AHA MOMENT, YOU SEE THE KID GO, "OH, I GOT IT.", "OH, MISS FARRELL, THANK YOU MS. FARRELL." WHEN YOU HEAR A "THANK YOU, MISS FARRELL", THAT HITS HOME, BECAUSE YOU SEE IT, AND THEN THEY SEE THEMSELVES GROW.
"THANK YOU, MS. FARRELL," AND I SAY, "NO, THANK YOU.
YOU DID IT. THIS IS YOU, YOU DID THIS." THAT'S A HUGE THING FOR ME.
>> THE DIFFERENCE I THINK SHE MAKES IS SHE THINKS THAT ANYBODY CAN DO IT WHEN THEY THINK THAT THEY CAN'T, AND WHEN SHE SAYS THAT THEY END UP BEING ABLE TO DO IT. [LAUGHTER]
>> I SEE THE GOOD IN STUDENTS.
I SEE THEM REACHING FOR AND FOR SOMETHING HIGHER THAN THEY ALREADY ARE.
I SPEAK INTO THEIR LIVES WHAT I CAN SEE, WHAT I DO SEE IN THEM.
MAKE SURE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND IT WITH THEIR HEART AND THEIR MINDS, AND ALL THERE BE THAT THEY UNDERSTAND YOU GOT MORE IN YOU THAN YOU THINK YOU DO.
>> [APPLAUSE] [BACKGROUND] OH MY GOODNESS. WOW. GOOD EVENING.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THANK YOU, MR. KIRSCHNER, I APPRECIATE YOU.
GOOD EVENING, DR. WRIGHT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, CROWLEY ISD, OAKMONT ELEMENTARY IS IN THE HOUSE, [APPLAUSE] GOOD AFTERNOON.
[LAUGHTER] I'M A LITTLE LOST OF WORDS BELIEVE IT OR NOT, AND I CAN SPEAK.
[LAUGHTER] BUT I AM VERY HONORED AND I'M OVERJOYED FOR THIS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD AND REWARD.
MY HEART GROWS FOR MY STUDENTS AND MY STAFF,
[00:25:01]
WITHOUT MY OAKMONT CAMP SOLD OUT, CROWLEY ISD, WITHOUT MY STUDENTS MY HEART WOULD NOT BE.THANK YOU VERY MUCH, I'M HONORED AND I'M PROUD.
THAT'S WHEN YOU REALLY, REALLY KNOW YOU HAVE A GIFT, WHEN YOU CAN JUST BE ASKED TO SING AND DON'T MISS A BEAT. THANK YOU FOR THAT.
THE DISTRICT IS SO MUCH BETTER BECAUSE OF YOUR SPIRIT, AND I SEE IT IN THE SMILES AND LAUGHTER WITH THE STAFF FROM OAKMAN, BUT ALSO IN THE STUDENT.
I MEAN, LIKE YOU SAID IN THE VIDEO, THE EYES LIGHT UP.
ALL RIGHT. THIS TIME WE ARE AT AGENDA ITEM 6.1,
[6.0 Report Item(s)]
COLLEGE CAREER AND MILITARY READINESS. DOCTOR WRIGHT.>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD, DR. DUVALL WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> GOOD EVENING, DR. MAYFIELD, DR. WRIGHT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, I AM HERE TO GIVE AN UPDATE ON COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS, MY VERY FAVORITE TOPIC.
IF WE LOOK AT COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND OUR DISTRICT, ON THE LAST STATE ACCOUNTABILITY, WE RECEIVED 91 OUT OF 100 POINTS DUE TO THE HARD WORK OF OUR CAMPUSES.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUSES ON THAT RATING.
THE JOURNEY TO COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS DOES NOT START IN HIGH SCHOOL, BUT IT IS A CONTINUUM ALL THE WAY FROM PRE-K WITH BENCHMARKS THROUGHOUT A STUDENT'S JOURNEY THROUGH OUR SCHOOLS.
OUR MATT HOOVER HAS CAPTURED THIS ON A GRAPHIC.
WE'RE GOING TO WALK THROUGH EACH OF THESE POINTS TONIGHT ON THE JOURNEY A STUDENT TAKES TO BECOME POST-SECONDARY-READY.
IF WE LOOK AT ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ACADEMICS, RESEARCH SHOWS US THAT IT STARTS ALL THE WAY BACK WITH PRE-K 4 ENROLLMENT.
CURRENTLY THIS YEAR WE HAVE 828 STUDENTS THAT ARE ENROLLED IN PRE-K 4.
THIS IS AN INCREASE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS.
IN 2019/'20, 42.9 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS ENTERED KINDERGARTEN, READY FOR KINDERGARTEN.
ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES ARE IMPLEMENTING AVID.
AVID IS A SET OF STRATEGIES THAT STUDENTS CAN USE TO INCREASE THEIR SKILL LEVEL AND BECOMING POST-SECONDARY READY.
WE ALSO ON THE JOURNEY LOOK AT ELEMENTARY ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, AND IN PARTICULAR, THERE ARE TWO TESTS THAT WE KNOW ARE IN AN INDICATION OF WHERE STUDENTS ARE ON THEIR JOURNEY.
ONE IS THIRD-GRADE READING, THE OTHER'S FOURTH-GRADE MATH, AND THE PERCENTAGES YOU SEE HERE FROM OUR LATEST STATE ACCOUNTABILITY REPORT INDICATE THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO WERE ON GRADE LEVEL ON THESE TWO TESTS.
THEN WHEN WE MOVE TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE LOOK AT EIGHTH-GRADE SCIENCE AND ALGEBRA 1, AND AGAIN, THIS IS THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS WHO WERE ON GRADE LEVEL IN THOSE TWO SUBJECT AREAS.
THEN WE MOVE TO CULTURE AND COLLEGE READINESS.
WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE IN OUR DISTRICT? WE LOOKED AT ACADEMICS, NOW WE'RE LOOKING AT CULTURE.
MIDDLE SCHOOL, WE HAVE A SIXTH-GRADE CCMR CLASS THAT ALL STUDENTS TAKE THAT INTRODUCES THEM TO THE DIFFERENT ADVANCED ACADEMICS, TO COLLEGE READINESS SKILLS.
THEY BECOME COLLEGE AWARE, AS WELL AS CAREER PATHWAYS.
AVID IS ALSO IMPLEMENTED AT MIDDLE SCHOOL.
AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, WE HAVE A VARIETY OF COURSES TO START THEM ON THEIR JOURNEY, BOTH IN PRE-API FOR ADVANCED ACADEMICS, AND THEN SEVERAL CTE CLASSES THAT THEY CAN TAKE FOR HIGH-SCHOOL CREDIT TO START ON THEIR JOURNEY FOR THEIR PROGRAM OF STUDY.
WE ALSO HAVE AN ENDORSEMENT NIGHT WHERE STUDENTS CHOOSE THEIR HIGH-SCHOOL= PATHWAY AND WE TELL THEM THE DIFFERENT COURSES THEY NEED TO TAKE TO STAY ON THAT JOURNEY.
THEN THIS YEAR, WE HAVE CCMR ADVISORS AT EACH MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS THAT ARE WORKING WITH OUR PARENTS AND OUR STUDENTS,
[00:30:03]
AND WE'RE GOING TO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT LATER IN THE PRESENTATION.THEN WE KNOW COLLEGE READINESS TESTING, THE TSI, THE TEXAS SUCCESS, MY MIND HAS GONE BLANK, INITIATIVE.
THANK YOU. THAT'S NOT GOOD, IS IT? TSI, WHEN WE LOOK AT TSI CCA, CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL ARE ALL TESTING SITES, AND SO STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE THE TSI FROM NINTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE AND NINTH AND 10TH, THEY CAN REQUEST TO TAKE THAT TEST IF THEY HAVE NOT TAKEN IT BY THE TIME THEY'RE A JUNIOR, WE TEST ALL STUDENTS.
WE WANT ALL STUDENTS TO TAKE THE TEST AT LEAST ONCE.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO TEST THEM UNTIL THEY ARE COLLEGE-READY.
YOU SEE HERE, CROWLEY ISD IS OUTPERFORMING BOTH THE REGIONAL LEVEL AND THE STATE.
WHEN WE LOOK AT TSI, BOTH SUBJECTS, ELR AND MATH.
LOOKING AT HIGH SCHOOL, COLLEGE, AND CAREER CULTURE, AGAIN, WE IMPLEMENT AVID AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS.
WE HAVE A ROBUST OFFERING OF ADVANCED ACADEMICS, CTE CLASSES.
THIS YEAR WE ALSO HAVE CCMR ADVISORS, AND WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT AGAIN A LITTLE LATER.
WE OFFER STUDENTS INTERNSHIPS, AND THEN WE HAVE OUR COLLEGE ADVISORS FROM TCU, WHICH ALSO PROVIDE SUPPORT TO OUR STUDENTS.
CONTINUING ON THE JOURNEY, WE GET TO COLLEGE AND CAREER PREP.
LOOKING AT OUR ADVANCED ACADEMIC COURSES, WE OFFER ADVANCED PLACEMENT DUAL CREDIT ON RAMPS.
THIRTY PERCENT OF OUR SENIORS LAST YEAR LEFT WITH COLLEGE CREDIT.
CAREER PREP, WE HAVE 32 DIFFERENT PROGRAMS OF STUDY.
JUST A REMINDER, A PROGRAM OF STUDY AS A COHERENT SEQUENCE OF COURSES PREPARING A STUDENT FOR A PARTICULAR OUTCOME IN A CAREER.
WE ALSO OFFER 11 DIFFERENT DEGREES OR COLLEGE CERTIFICATES, AND OF THOSE 11, 7 ARE OFFERED EITHER AT SEATTLE OR WITH CTE, THEY'RE OPEN TO ALL STUDENTS.
SEVEN OF THOSE DEGREE PROGRAMS AND FOUR OF THE DEGREE PROGRAMS ARE OFFERED AT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY.
INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS, AND I ALWAYS REMIND EVERYONE THOSE INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS ARE THE VERY SAME ONES YOU WOULD TAKE IN INDUSTRY.
THEY ARE NOT WATERED DOWN FOR HIGH SCHOOL, BUT THEY ARE ACTUALLY GIVING THE STUDENT A POST-SECONDARY CREDENTIAL TO GO OUT AND WORK.
YOU CAN SEE IN 2021, 395 STUDENTS ACHIEVED AN INDUSTRY CREDENTIAL.
OUR PARTNERSHIPS, WE HAVE THREE HIGHER EDUCATION PARTNERSHIPS: TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE, TEXAS A&M COMMERCE, AND UT AUSTIN.
IN 2022/23, WE HAVE 402 STUDENTS WHO WILL BE INVOLVED IN INTERNSHIPS.
COLLEGE READY; LOOKING AT COLLEGE APPLICATIONS, AND STARTING WITH NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, THIS WAS LAST YEAR SENIOR CLASS, 82 PERCENT OF STUDENTS COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE COLLEGE APPLICATION, AND YOU SEE GOING DOWN 3 5, HOW MANY APPLIED TO A TWO-YEAR COLLEGE OR A FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE.
LOOKING AT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, 73 PERCENT OF THE SENIOR CLASS COMPLETED AT LEAST ONE COLLEGE APPLICATION.
OUR GRADUATION RATE ON OUR TEXAS ACCOUNTABILITY WAS 92.8 PERCENT FOR CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND 96.2 PERCENT FOR NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL.
THEN FINALLY, COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES AND SCHOLARSHIPS.
AT NORTH CROWLEY LAST YEAR, 67 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS COMPLETE THE FASFA.
YOU SEE THE SCHOLARSHIP WAS OVER FOUR MILLION DOLLARS.
SIXTY-FOUR PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS AT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETED THE FASFA AND OUR SCHOLARSHIPS WERE 2.8 MILLION.
NOW THIS IS A GOAL FOR US WHEN WE COMPARE OURSELVES SOME FASFA COMPLETION WITH OTHER DISTRICTS THAT HAVE TCU ADVISED, THE AVERAGE IS 70 PERCENT.
SO WE'RE HOPING WITH THE ADDITION OF T3 OR TARRANT TO AND THROUGH, WE CAN INCREASE THIS NUMBER FOR OUR STUDENTS.
LOOKING OVER ALL AT THAT CONTINUUM, SOME HIGHLIGHTS WHEN WE'RE TALKING COLLEGE CAREER MILITARY READINESS.
IN 2021/22, WE DID A PROGRAM EVALUATION AND WE'RE GOING TO SHARE THE RESULTS OF THAT THIS EVENING.
THEN WE ALSO GOING INTO THIS YEAR, FORMED A PARTNERSHIP WITH TARRANT TO AND THROUGH AND ADDED CCMR ADVISERS AT OUR HIGH SCHOOLS AND OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS,
[00:35:02]
AND WE'LL TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT ALSO.JUST A REMINDER OF WHAT THAT PROGRAM EVALUATION PROCESS LOOKS LIKE.
AS WE BRING TOGETHER A GROUP OF STAKEHOLDERS, FORM RESEARCH QUESTIONS, LOOK AT BOTH QUANTITATIVE, QUALITATIVE DATA, AND FORM ACTION PLANS BASED ON THE FINDINGS.
OUR THREE FINDINGS FOR CCMR. THE FIRST WAS THAT WE DO NOT HAVE A WRITTEN CAREER READY PLAN FROM PRE-K ALL THE WAY THROUGH 12 GRADE.
WHILE WE HAVE POCKETS AND WE DO DIFFERENT THINGS, WE DON'T HAVE A FORMAL PLAN TO ENSURE EVERY STUDENT IS EXPOSED TO CAREER OPPORTUNITIES, STARTING AT PRE-K AND GOING SYSTEMICALLY ALL THE WAY THROUGH HIGH SCHOOL.
THAT IS ONE OF OUR FINDINGS AND ONE OF OUR GOALS THAT WE WILL BE DOING IS WRITING A PLAN OF EVERY FIRST GRADER WILL HEAR THIS, EVERY SECOND GRADER WILL BE EXPOSED TO THIS TO ENSURE ALL KIDS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR MAXIMUM POST-SECONDARY READINESS WHEN WE'RE TALKING CAREERS.
OUR SECOND FINDING WAS THAT WE DO NOT TRACK COLLEGE PERSISTENCE DATA EFFECTIVELY IN OUR DISTRICT.
THIS IS OUR ACTION PLAN TO BEGIN TO FORMERLY TRACK PERSISTENCE DATA AND TO SHARE THAT WITH OUR STAKEHOLDERS IN OUR DISTRICT.
OUR THIRD FINDING WAS, WHILE WE HAVE AVID ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES, WE'RE NOT SURE OF THE IMPACT ON COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS OR POST-SECONDARY READINESS.
THIS YEAR WE'RE DOING A PROGRAM EVALUATION ON AVID AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO SHARE THOSE RESULTS WITH YOU.
LIKE WE SAID, TARRANT TO AND THROUGH IS A NEW PARTNERSHIP FOR US, AND JUST A REMINDER, I KNOW WE'VE LOOKED AT THIS BEFORE.
TARRANT TO AND THROUGH IS A DECADE OF SUPPORT FOR EVERY CROWLEY ISD STUDENTS, STARTING IN GRADE SIX THROUGH 12TH GRADE IN CROWLEY ISD.
THEN WHEN THEY LEAVE US, IF THEY GO TO ONE OF THE EIGHT PARTNER COLLEGES, THEY ARE OFFERED PERSISTENCE COACHING TO ENSURE THEY STAY IN COLLEGE.
AGAIN, IT'S WITH EIGHT DIFFERENT PARTNER COLLEGES, WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE CURRENTLY AT MIDDLE-SCHOOL, YOU'LL SEE OUR CCMR ADVISERS DOING A LOT OF FAMILY ENGAGEMENT WORKSHOPS AND WORKING WITH FAMILIES.
TALKING ABOUT OPPORTUNITIES IN HIGH-SCHOOL, TALKING ABOUT COLLEGE AWARENESS, TALKING ABOUT CAREER AWARENESS.
THEY ALSO WILL MEET INDIVIDUALLY WITH STUDENTS AND GIVE ADVISEMENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND CAREER PROGRAMS AND ADVANCED ACADEMICS, CTE, C-ATL, CCA, JROTC, ANYWHERE THAT A STUDENT MAY WANT TO GO IN HIGH SCHOOL, THEY HAVE THAT INDIVIDUAL CONVERSATION WITH THE CHILD TO ENSURE THEY KNOW HOW TO GET THERE IN HIGH SCHOOL.
ONCE THEY'RE IN HIGH SCHOOL, SOMETHING I'M SO EXCITED TO SHARE WITH YOU ARE THE POST-SECONDARY PLANS.
THE CCMR ADVISER SITS DOWN WITH EVERY STUDENT AND SAYS, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL? HOW CAN WE GET YOU THERE? WHAT BARRIERS ARE IN YOUR WAY? WHAT DO YOU KNOW? WHAT DO YOU NOT KNOW? LET'S TALK ABOUT ALL THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT YOU HAVE AND HOW YOU PERSONALLY CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THOSE.
THEN LIKE I SAID, FAFSA COMPLETION IS A GOAL OF OURS TO INCREASE THAT PERCENTAGE, AND THEN ALSO TO DO MULTIPLE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS WITH EACH STUDENT.
NOW THE MOST EXCITING SLIDE NEXT MONDAY NIGHT IS THE COLLEGE AND CAREER FAIR AT THE BILL R. JOHNSON CTE CENTER, WE'LL HAVE THE COLLEGE FAIR, JUST LIKE WE'RE USED TO.
THAT WILL BE FROM 6:00 UNTIL EIGHT O'CLOCK.
FOOD TRUCKS, SHUTTLES GOING FROM THE CAMPUSES, COLLEGES LINING THE HALLS, LOTS OF CONVERSATIONS WITH KIDS.
BUT THIS YEAR WE'RE ADDING A STUDENT JOB FAIR.
IF YOU REMEMBER LAST SUMMER WE HAD A STUDENT JOB FAIR, WAS A HUGE SUCCESS FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND THANKS TO MR. RASHAD MOHAMMAD, WE ARE GOING TO HAVE A STUDENT JOB FAIR WHERE STUDENTS CAN COME AND TALK WITH EMPLOYERS THIS SAME EVENING AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE.
I WILL ENTERTAIN ANY QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, CONCERNS AT THIS TIME, PLEASE.
I JUST WANT TO ASK A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS WITH REGARDS TO THE DATA POINTS THAT YOU REPORTED THIS EVENING.
I'M NOT TRYING TO CATCH YOU OFF GUARD, I'M JUST CURIOUS.
WITH REGARDS TO THE NUMBERS OF INTERNSHIPS OR THOSE EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT, DO WE HAVE SOMEWHERE LIKE OUR GOAL, LIKE WHAT WE'RE STRIVING FOR? I THINK THE NUMBERS ARE GREAT.
MY QUESTION IS NOT BECAUSE I'M NOT PROUD OF THE PROGRESS, MY QUESTIONS ARE BASED ON WHERE WE ARE STRIVING TO GO.
>> WITH THE INTERNSHIPS THOSE INTERNSHIPS ARE STUDENTS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN PRACTICUMS.
[00:40:02]
THEY ARE COMPLETING THEIR CTE COURSE, SO THAT NUMBER WILL VARY FOR THOSE WHO ARE COMPLETING THAT COHERENT SEQUENCE.ONCE YOU GET TO THE PRACTICUM, YOU'RE REQUIRED TO HAVE AN INTERNSHIP, SO THAT'S AN INCREASE IN THOSE CTE COHERENT SEQUENCES.
AS FAR AS COLLEGE CREDIT, MR. GILLIES DOES SET THOSE GOALS.
I DON'T HAVE THOSE, BUT I'LL BE GLAD TO SHARE THOSE WITH THE BOARD IN AN UPDATE. YES, MA'AM.
>> I ONLY ASK BECAUSE I KNOW THAT WE HAVE THESE GROWING PARTNERSHIPS WITH THE HIGHER LEARNING COMMUNITY, THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING TO SAY, IS THAT THE RIGHT WORD? IT SEEM LIKE IT WAS SEEN, I HAVE NO IDEA.
IT WOULD BE GREAT TO CHALLENGE OUR STUDENTS EVEN THOUGH EVERYONE IS NOT INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COLLEGE, BUT WE CAN HAVE 100 PERCENT APPLICATION.
BECAUSE EVERYONE AUTOMATICALLY GETS ACCEPTANCE TO SOME OF THESE PARTNERSHIPS THAT WE HAVE AND JUST WITH THE BEAUTIFUL CTE CENTER THAT WE HAVE AND THE MANY OPPORTUNITIES WHETHER THEY'RE VIRTUAL OR IN PERSON AND JUST ALL THESE DIFFERENT OFFERINGS, I WOULD REALLY LOVE TO SEE A LITTLE BIT MORE, I GUESS, SIMILAR RESULTS BETWEEN OUR TWO HIGH SCHOOLS, AND THEN JUST INCREASED NUMBERS OF OUR STUDENTS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF ALL THE WONDERFUL PROGRAMS THAT WE HAVE.
BECAUSE IN ESSENCE, IT ONLY ENHANCES THE OPPORTUNITIES THAT THEY'LL HAVE AFTER HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S NOT A QUESTION, IT'S MORE OF A CHALLENGE.
>> I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING THE COLLEGE APPLICATIONS THAT STUDENTS SUBMIT.
IT LOOKS LIKE FOR BOTH HIGH-SCHOOL, 70 PERCENT OR MORE, AT LEAST APPLY TO ONE COLLEGE.
I HAVE BEEN WONDERING, I BELIEVE TEXAS HAS A COMMON APPLICATION SITE WHERE YOU CAN APPLY TO MULTIPLE AND SO I WAS WONDERING IF STUDENTS DO THAT AND MAYBE THAT CAN INCREASE THE NUMBERS AND ALSO DO WE WAIVE FEES WHEN STUDENTS ARE APPLYING TO COLLEGES?
>> ALL OF THE APPLICATIONS ARE DONE THROUGH APPLY TEXAS, SO THAT IS THE SYSTEM THAT WE USE.
SOME STUDENTS HAVE FEES WAIVED DEPENDING ON IF THEY'RE AN AVID, THEIR SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS.
NOT ALL, BUT SOME. YES, AND WE'RE WORKING ON THAT WITH THOSE EIGHT PARTNER COLLEGES ALSO WITH OUR T3 INITIATIVE.
>> DR. DUVALL, CAN YOU TALK MORE ABOUT I GUESS, THE PRE-K AND I GUESS IS IT CREATING A FOLDER FOR THAT CHILD THROUGHOUT THE 12 YEARS THROUGH CROWLEY ISD AND TALKING TO A FOUR-YEAR-OLD, YOU'RE LIKE, YOU LIKE TO COOK? THEY'RE LIKE, YEAH. OR IS IT, DO YOU LIKE TAKING NOTES OR YOU'RE A SECRETARY, ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
>> AS FAR AS CAREER AWARENESS?
>> I GUESS CAREER AND THEN I GUESS PUTTING IT IN THEIR FILES SO THAT WE CAN GO BACK BECAUSE WHAT I'M GETTING AT IS WHEN I WAS IN MIDDLE SCHOOL OR WHATEVER I WAS LIKE, MAN, I WANT TO PLAY BASKETBALL AND I LIKE GIRLS.
THAT WAS PRETTY MUCH IT. I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE TALK TO OUR PARENTS I KNOW, UNFORTUNATELY NOT EVERYONE HAS THAT ABILITY, BUT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE TALKING TO, AS OBVIOUSLY AS MANY GUARDIANS.
BUT HOW DO WE PUT THAT FILE AND MAKE SURE THAT THAT FILE TRANSFERS FROM GRADE TO GRADE WITH THEM, IF THAT ALL MAKE SENSE?
>> WE DO NOT HAVE STUDENTS SELECT A CAREER BEFORE EIGHTH GRADE, BUT WE MAKE SURE THEIR CAREER AWARE OF A LOT OF OPPORTUNITIES.
BECAUSE WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT MANY TIMES STUDENTS WILL SELECT A CAREER OF SOMETHING THEY KNOW, LIKE WE HAD OUR GIRLS IN AVIATION PRESENTATION.
IN OUR ELEMENTARY GRADES, WE PARTNER WITH STEM PLUS TO ENSURE THEY ARE AWARE OF A LOT OF DIFFERENT CAREERS AND THAT THEY CAN PARTICIPATE IN THAT CAREER.
THEN ONCE THEY REACH EIGHTH GRADE, WE ASK THEM TO SELECT AN ENDORSEMENT OR A PROGRAM OF STUDY.
BUT UP UNTIL THAT POINT IS CAREER AWARENESS INSTEAD OF CAREER SELECTION.
>> HOW MANY, CAREERS DO YOU THINK? JUST ANNOUNCE RANDOM, BUT HOW MANY CAREERS DO YOU THINK THAT WE EXPOSE OUR KIDS TO?
>> I COULD NOT EVEN BEGIN TO GUESS, ANYTHING THAT WE CAN FIND.
>> WELL, THAT'S GOOD ENOUGH FOR ME. [LAUGHTER]
>> THAT FOLDER THAT MR. GRASSIA IS TALKING ABOUT.
>> YEAH, WE DON'T HAVE A FOLDER.
[00:45:01]
>> I JUST MADE IT UP. [LAUGHTER] I'M SORRY, MS. DAVIS.
>> I FELL FOR IT. THE DOCUMENTATION THAT YOU MENTIONED, DID YOU SAY ANYTHING ABOUT DOCUMENTING?
>> IN EIGHTH GRADE, EVERY STUDENT HAS A GRADUATION PLAN AND THEN IN HIGH SCHOOL WE'RE WORKING ON A POST-SECONDARY PLAN WHERE WE TALK TO STUDENTS ABOUT WHAT THEY WANT TO DO AFTER HIGH SCHOOL.
>> PRACTICE AT ENSURING THAT THEY HAVE EXPOSURE, THAT'S POSSIBLE.
>> YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE COLLEGE PERSISTENCE AND TRACKING THAT, GOOD LUCK.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT DOING FOR A WHILE AND TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO DO IT IS A CHALLENGE?
>> YES, MA'AM. I WOULD AGREE, AND WE'RE HOPING OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH TARRANT TO AND THROUGH WILL ALLOW US TO WORK WITH THOSE EIGHT UNIVERSITIES FOR PERSISTENCE DATA AS WELL AS THE CLEARINGHOUSE.
BUT IT IS A CHALLENGE, WE'RE READY FOR IT THOUGH.
>> I HAVE ONE QUESTION TO TRUSTEE GRASSIA'S POINT WHEN WE'RE EXPOSING ELEMENTARY STUDENTS, DO THEY HAVE A OPPORTUNITY TO EVER VISIT THE BRJ CENTER AND MAYBE SEE WHAT HIGH-SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE DOING?
>> YES, MA'AM, THEY DO. ALL THE CAMPUS OPENS TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS TWO DAYS A WEEK, AND THAT IS COMMUNICATED THROUGH THE COUNSELING STAFF, YES, AS WELL AS STEM PLUS COORDINATORS.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> THE ONLY OTHER COMMENT IS TO BE CAREFUL WHO YOU TRUST.
>> AWESOME. THANK YOU, DR. DUVALL. APPRECIATE THE REPORT.
THIS TIME WE'LL MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM 6.3; THE REALTOR OPEN HOUSE. DR. WRIGHT.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD, MS. DIGGLES WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT WOODSON-MAYFIELD, DR. WRIGHT, ESTEEMED TRUSTEES.
AS WE KNOW BASED ON OUR DEMOGRAPHERS REPORT, CROWLEY ISD IS A RAPID GROWTH DISTRICT WITH NEW AND EXISTING HOME SALES.
WITH THIS IN MIND, WE'RE HOSTING OUR TARRANT AREA REALTORS FOR AN OPEN HOUSE NEXT TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27TH.
AS OUR GUESTS, THEY'LL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM DISTRICT LEADERS, TO TOUR THE BRJ CENTER, AND TO SEE OUR BEAUTIFUL NEW MULTI-PURPOSE STADIUM.
THEY'LL ALSO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASK QUESTIONS FROM DISTRICT LEADERS AND TO JUST TALK, JUST GET TO KNOW US AND SEE OUR FACILITIES.
THIS WE HOPE WILL HELP THEM EFFECTIVELY EDUCATE THEIR CLIENTS WHO WILL BECOME OUR FUTURE FAMILIES.
WE'VE SHARED THIS PARTICULAR FLYER ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS. WE'VE TAKEN IT OUT INTO THE COMMUNITY TO BUILDERS IN PAPER FORM, AND WE EVEN PUT IT ON THE BIG SCREEN AT THE STADIUM, AND SO CURRENTLY WE HAVE RIGHT AT 50 REALTORS AND BUILDERS WHO HAVE RSVP FOR THIS EXCITING EVENT NEXT TUESDAY MORNING.
HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU HAVE.
>> MS. DIGGLES, THIS THE FIRST TIME THAT WE'VE HOSTED AN OPEN HOUSE OUT. IT'S NOT RIGHT.
>> ALWAYS EXCITED TO SHOWCASE THE GREAT THING, SO I REALLY DO APPRECIATE IT.
I'VE ATTENDED ONE OF THESE BEFORE IN OTHER PLACES AND I THINK IT'S AWESOME BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY ASSETS IN THE CROWLEY ISD COMMUNITY, SO GREAT JOB. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.
>> I JUST HAVE A QUICK QUESTION.
ARE YOU OPEN TO RECEIVING MORE REALTOR INFORMATION IF WE KNOW A REALTOR THAT MAY BE INTERESTED, WHO'S GOT SOME STAKEHOLDER IN THE AREA? ARE YOU STILL TAKING THOSE NAMES?
>> THANK YOU. OKAY. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> WHAT'S THE DEADLINE TO OUR SVP?
>> THE DEADLINE IS ACTUALLY ALREADY PASSED, BUT WE ARE CROWLEY PROUD UNIFIED REALLY.
WE HAVE MORE SPACE. YEAH, IT'S FINE.
>> ALL RIGHT. THANK YOU, AND WE WILL BE THERE.
[00:50:04]
THANK YOU. THIS TIME, WE'LL MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM 6.4; PARENT UNIVERSITY. DR. WRIGHT.>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD, MR. RASHAD MOHAMMAD WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> THANK YOU, DR. WRIGHT. GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
I AM EXCITED TO BRING TO YOU TONIGHT INFORMATION ABOUT PARENT UNIVERSITY.
PARENT UNIVERSITY IN ITS SIMPLEST FORM, IS BASICALLY A CONTINUED EFFORT TO INFORM, INCLUDE, EDUCATE, ALSO TO EMPOWER OUR PARENTS.
NOW, BASICALLY, WHEN WE TALK ABOUT PARENT UNIVERSITY, I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE PARTNERS IN EDUCATION, AND I BELIEVE THAT WE MUST CONTINUE TO INVOLVE THEM IN THE PROCESS AND LET THEM KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THEIR CHILDREN, AND THIS SUNDAY WE ARE ACTUALLY HAVING A PARENT UNIVERSITY AT 6:30 PM AND FOCUS IS GOING TO BE ON SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
ULTIMATELY, WE HAVE OTHER OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL, BUT THAT PARTICULAR NIGHT WE'RE JUST DISCUSSING SUBSTANCE ABUSE.
IN ADDITION, WE WILL BE PROVIDING PARENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK SO THAT WE COULD DEVELOP OTHER OPPORTUNITIES REVOLVING AROUND THEIR FEEDBACK.
THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR NOW. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, I'LL BE HAPPY TO HELP AND ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS.
>> HOW IS THIS INFORMATION BEING DISTRIBUTED TO THE COMMUNITY AND PARENTS?
>> WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING VIRTUAL OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL AS IN-PERSON.
WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING EVENING OPPORTUNITIES, WEEKENDS.
WE'RE GOING TO BE DOING IT ON A SCOREBOARD AT THE STADIUM, VIDEO MESSAGES, TEXT MESSAGES, JUST A VARIETY OF OUTLETS THAT WE ARE GOING TO PROVIDE THE PARENTS.
>> WHAT ABOUT COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS LIKE THINGS IN THE COMMUNITY LIKE PLACES PARENTS WOULD BE LIKE CHURCHES, I GUESS, COMMUNITY EVENTS?
>> ABSOLUTELY. OUR LIAISON, MS. LANE IS REALLY CLOSE TO THE FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATION, AND SO ALL THIS INFORMATION THAT WE PUSH OUT, SHE ALSO PUSHES THAT OUT AS WELL, SO YES, MA'AM.
>> THIS IS A DIFFERENT FORMAT THAN WE'VE USED IN THE PAST FOR PARENT UNIVERSITY?
>> YEAH, WE'VE HAD IN-PERSON BEFORE, LIKE IN WORKSHOP AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
I REMEMBER WE ADDED IN NORTH CROWLEY A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, AND ACTUALLY BEFORE SCHOOL STARTED, WE HAD AN EVENT ON ZOOM, JUST IT WAS ABOUT SAFETY.
WE HAD ABOUT 200 PEOPLE SHOW UP TO THAT EVENT.
>> THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY.
THIS COULD POSSIBLY BE A BETTER WAY OF DOING IT WHEN YOU'RE FOCUSING ON ONE TOPIC RATHER THAN THE WAY WE'VE DONE IT IN THE PAST.
ALTHOUGH I THINK THAT MAY HAVE SERVED A BENEFIT AS WELL, BUT I REALLY THINK FOCUSING ON ONE TOPIC, THEN PARENTS CAN TUNE IN TO THE ONES THEY'RE REALLY INTERESTED IN.
>> YES, MA'AM. ABSOLUTELY. WE'LL FOCUS ON THAT ONE TOPIC AND BASICALLY THINGS ARE GOING TO REVOLVE AROUND SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, ECONOMIC HEALTH, ACADEMIC HEALTH AS WELL.
PARENTS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY AT THE END OF OUR MEETINGS TO ASK QUESTIONS THAT WE WILL USE TO DEVELOP OUR SUBSEQUENT PARENT UNIVERSITY SESSIONS.
>> I THINK THAT'S GREAT TO DO IT LIKE THAT.
>> THANK YOU. ANY MORE QUESTIONS? NO?
ARE WE GOING TO BE ABLE TO THROW THIS UP ON FACEBOOK?
>> PLEASE BE SURE TO SHARE IT ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES.
WE DEFINITELY WANT AS MUCH PARTICIPATION AS POSSIBLE.
>> THEN IN THOSE NEWSLETTERS, THAT WAS MY RECOMMENDATION BECAUSE I DIDN'T GET IT IN MY PARENT NEWSLETTER, BUT IT WOULD BE NICE TO HAVE IT ADDED.
>> YES, MA'AM. WE JUST FINALIZED THE ACTUAL PUBLICATION TODAY.
>> LOOKING FORWARD TO IT. THANK YOU.
>> I APPRECIATE YOU-ALL. THANK YOU.
>> AT THIS TIME, WHERE AT AGENDA ITEM 7.0,

MR. KIRSCHNER, DO WE HAVE A SPEAKER FOR TONIGHT YES.
>> YES, MA'AM, WE DO. WE HAVE ONE SPEAKER, MS. LACHITA FORD. MS. FORD?
>> HELLO, GOOD EVENING. I DID SPEAK WITH SOMEONE EARLIER TODAY, SO I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN ADDRESS THIS WITH YOU GUYS, BUT I'LL FIND OUT, I GUESS, RIGHT NOW.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WANTED TO BRING UP AS I KNOW, IT'S BEEN AN ISSUE WITH THE DRESS CODE AND I'M SPECIFICALLY SPEAKING AT CROWLEY HIGH.
I WORK THE CONCESSION STANDS FOR THE FOOTBALL BOOSTER CLUB THERE.
A LOT OF THE KIDS COME IN, NOT NECESSARILY DRESSED APPROPRIATELY AND SO WHEN I APPROACHED THEM ABOUT IT, I'M LIKE, DID YOU WEAR THIS THE SCHOOL DAY? THEY'RE LIKE, I DON'T THINK THIS IS APPROPRIATE FOR YOU TO WEAR, AND I'M THINKING MAYBE THEY DON'T KNOW THAT.
EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE NOT IN SCHOOL, YOU'RE STILL ON SCHOOL PROPERTY AND YOU'RE STILL ATTENDING A GAME, SO IS THERE I GUESS MAYBE SOMETHING WE CAN PUT OUT TO THE PARENTS? LIKE, HEY, EVEN THOUGH YOUR KID IS NOT ACTUALLY IN SCHOOL, YOU ARE STILL AT A SCHOOL EVENT AND YOU DO NEED TO DRESS APPROPRIATELY.
HALTER TOPS, VERY SHORT SHORTS, THAT SHOULD BE A NO, NO.
BUT I'M THINKING THAT THESE KIDS MAYBE DON'T KNOW THAT OR I'M NOT REALLY SURE WHERE TO GO FROM THERE.
WHICH IS WHY I'M ASKING NOW. THAT IS IT.
>> WE WILL TAKE THAT TO THE BOARD AND MAKE SURE THAT WE GET A RESPONSE TO YOU NEXT TIME.
>> THE OTHER THING I WANT TO SAY IS I WANTED TO THANK CROWLEY ISD AND ALSO DAVID WALKER.
MY KIDS ARE EXCELLING IN THAT SCHOOL AND I JUST WANTED TO SAY THANK YOU. THANK YOU.
ARE THERE ANY OTHER SPEAKERS BY THE WAY? IT'S JUST THE ONE? OKAY. WE'RE AT THE CONSENT AGENDA,
[8.0 Consent Agenda]
WE HAVE SEVERAL ITEMS. AGENDA ITEM 8.1, APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT, AGENDA 8.2, APPROVAL OF THE AUGUST 25TH, 2022 REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES, AND THE SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2022 CALLED BOARD MEETING MINUTES.8.3 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, 8.5, 2022,2023, TEACHER APPRAISERS, 8.6 APPROVAL OF PURCHASE OF ADDITIONAL CHROMEBOOKS FOR CISD CAMPUSES.
8.7 STUDENT ENGAGEMENT GIRLS, INC EXPANSION, 8.8 ACCEPTANCE OF GRANT AWARDS, 8.9 BOARD POLICY UPDATE 119, AND 810 CLASS SIZE WAIVERS.
BOARD AT THIS TIME, DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR REQUESTS FOR DISCUSSION FOR ANY OF THE CONSENT AGENDA ITEMS?
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, I DO HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING THE APPROVAL OF PURCHASE FOR ADDITIONAL CHROMEBOOKS.
THERE WERE SOME QUESTIONS THAT I POSED DURING LAST WEEK'S MEETING.
AS FAR AS HOW MANY STUDENTS DID WE STILL HAVE WITHOUT CHROMEBOOKS AND I BELIEVE MR. FISHER AND DR. MCFARLAND, WE'RE GOING TO LOOK INTO THAT.
BEFORE WE APPROVE THIS IN THE CONSENT AGENDA, I WOULD IF WE CAN HAVE THOSE QUESTIONS ANSWERED.
>> DR. WRIGHT, HAS ANYONE PREPARED WITH THAT ANSWER AT THIS TIME?
[01:00:05]
>> IT'S GOT CAMPUS, THE CHIEF TECHNOLOGY OFFICER.
I WASN'T HERE LAST WEEK, I APOLOGIZE FOR THAT.
THE ACTUAL CHROMEBOOKS THAT WE ARE PURCHASING IN THIS INSTANCE RIGHT NOW, THERE'S TWO MODELS, THERE'S A 300E, WHICH FLIPS OVER INTO A TOUCHPAD FOR THE YOUNGEST LEARNERS, THERE'S A 100E THAT IS A REGULAR CHROMEBOOK THAT DOES NOT FLIP OVER TO A TOUCHPAD, THAT'S IN THE SECONDARY.
THIS IS FOR THE 300ES FOR THE YOUNGEST LEARNERS.
RIGHT NOW WE HAVE, AT THE ELEMENTARIES, STUDENTS DO NOT TAKE THOSE HOME SO WE HAVE 85 PERCENT COVERAGE IN THE ELEMENTARY RIGHT NOW.
IT'S NOT REALLY AFFECTING LEARNING AT THIS POINT.
BECAUSE THERE'S 85 PERCENT OF STUDENTS HAVE CHROMEBOOKS.
THEY CAN MOVE THOSE BETWEEN CLASSES SO LEARNING IS NOT REALLY BEING AFFECTED AT THIS TIME AT THE ELEMENTARY, BUT WE DO WANT TO BE A DISTRICT THAT'S ONE-TO-ONE, THAT'S WHY WE'RE PURCHASING THESE OTHER 300ES SO WE CAN FILL OUT THE REST OF THOSE AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS.
>> TRUSTEE DAVIS, DID YOUR QUESTION GET ANSWERED?
ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR DISCUSSIONS FOR THE CONSENT AGENDA? IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA?
>> I RECOMMEND THE APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA AS APPROVED.
>> I'LL SECOND. THANK YOU TRUSTEE GRASSY AND DR. HALL, MOVE TO VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY, THANK YOU.
WE HAVE SOME CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS.
[9.0 Consideration and Possible Action Item (s)]
AGENDA ITEM 9.1, THE ACCEPTANCE OF INNOVATIVE TEACHING GRANT DONATIONS FROM CHISHOLM TRAIL EDUCATION FOUNDATION, DR. WRIGHT?>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOUNDATION PRESIDENT, MS. BUNNY BARKSDALE WILL PRESENT THIS POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. WRIGHT.
I'M BUNNY BARKSDALE, FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT I HAVE NOT MET.
I AM PRESIDENT OF THE CHISHOLM TRAIL EDUCATION FOUNDATION THAT BENEFITS CROWLEY ISD, AND I AM HERE AGAIN TO PROVIDE TO THE BOARD AN ANNUAL UPDATE ON THE FOUNDATION AND TO DOCUMENT YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THE GRANT FUNDS PROVIDED THIS ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR TO THE CISD TEACHERS AND STAFF.
AS YOU ALL KNOW, THE FOUNDATION WAS FORMED TO SUPPORT CROWLEY ISD.
OUR MISSION IS TO PROVIDE OPPORTUNITIES FOR EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION, TO PROMOTE INNOVATION IN TEACHING, TO PARTNER WITH THE COMMUNITY TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF THE EDUCATION FOR EVERY STUDENT IN CROWLEY ISD.
TO THIS END, THIS GRANT CYCLE, WE HAVE AWARDED GRANTS TOTALING ABOUT $33,500.
WE PROVIDED FUNDS FOR SEVERAL DISTRICT-WIDE PROJECTS SUCH AS THE BATTLE OF THE BOOKS, PANTHER OLYMPICS, THE MAKING CONNECTIONS, COMMUNITY DISABILITY FAIR, AND OTHERS.
WE'VE PROVIDED FUNDS TO ALLOW STUDENTS AT ALL LEVELS TO EXPLORE NEW LANGUAGES, TO EXPLORE STEM EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, ENTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES AND CAMPUS ACTIVITIES THAT ALLOW DIFFERENT STUDENTS OF DIFFERENT AGES AND ABILITIES TO WORK TOGETHER.
SOME REAL INNOVATION WITH OLDER STUDENTS AND YOUNGER STUDENTS WORKING TOGETHER.
ONE NEW GRANT RECIPIENT THIS YEAR THAT WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT IS THE REGIONAL DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM FOR THE DEAF.
EACH OF THE GRANTS MADE THIS YEAR IS INDIVIDUALLY DETAILED IN YOUR MATERIALS THAT ARE PROVIDED.
WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THE ADVENTURES AHEAD FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES THROUGH THE GRANT FUNDS, AND ONE THING KNEW THAT WE'D LIKE TO DO THIS YEAR.
WE'RE HOPING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR TO HAVE DIFFERENT INDIVIDUALS AND GRANT RECIPIENTS COME AND TALK TO YOU ABOUT THEIR PROGRAM AND WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND HOW IT'S BEEN SUCCESSFUL, HOW IT CAN BE IMPROVED, WHAT ELSE THEY COULD DO.
THE FOUNDATION BOARD WOULD LIKE FOR ME TO THANK YOU ALL FOR LETTING US HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK AND HELP THE STUDENTS AND STAFF OF CROWLEY ISD.
WE WOULD LOVE FOR YOU ALL TO JOIN US AT OUR GOLF TOURNAMENT ON OCTOBER 12TH.
[01:05:01]
THERE'S INFORMATION AND FORMS TO FILL OUT IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO PLAY ON THE TABLE WITH AGENDAS OUTSIDE THE ROOM, AND IF ANYONE WOULD JUST LIKE TO COME VISIT AND RIDE AROUND IN A GOLF CART.[LAUGHTER] YOU'RE MORE THAN WELCOME.
IT'S NOT ALWAYS SAFE, AND IF THERE ARE ANY EMPLOYEES HERE OF CROWLEY ISD OR ANYONE WHO WOULD LIKE TO HELP OUR FOUNDATION AS WE PROVIDE GRANT FUNDS, I DO HAVE FORMS AND THESE ARE FOR THE ABILITY TO MAKE EITHER A ONE-TIME OR A MONTHLY PAYROLL DEDUCTION THAT GOES DIRECTLY TO THE FOUNDATION.
ONE THING THAT I'M PROUD OF, BUT FOR A VERY SMALL PERCENTAGE THAT'S LESS THAN 0.5 PERCENT.
ALL OF THE FUNDS THAT WE GATHER GO TO GRANTS THAT WE GIVE AND HELPING STUDENTS.
WE DO USE FUNDS TO BUY INSURANCE.
UNFORTUNATELY IN THE WORLD WE LIVE, BUT THAT'S IT.
EVERYTHING ELSE GOES TO HELP STUDENTS AND THE FAMILIES AND THE STAFF OF CROWLEY ISD, AND WITH YOU-ALL'S CONTINUE WILL HELP KEEP DOING THAT.
I'M HERE IF ANYBODY HAS QUESTIONS.
>> WELL, MS. BARKSDALE, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR DEDICATION.
I KNOW YOU HAVE A LOT ON YOUR PLATE, AND ALL YEAR YOU'RE WORKING TOWARDS THE DISTRICT, AND SO I KNOW OUR STAFF AND OUR STUDENTS DO BENEFIT FROM ALL OF YOUR EFFORTS.
YES, OCTOBER 12TH, IT'S ON MY CALENDAR.
I WON'T BE ABLE TO STAY THE WHOLE TIME, BUT I AM COMING BY ON MY WAY TO DALLAS THAT MORNING, AND I WOULD ENCOURAGE ALL OF US TO PARTICIPATE, AND AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION.
>> THANK YOU AND I'M ALWAYS AVAILABLE IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHERE TO FIND ME, ANTHONY DOES.
IF ANYONE HAS QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, THOUGHTS, JUST LET ME KNOW. THANK YOU.
>> WONDERFUL. THANK YOU. MR. GRASSIA, YOU'RE STILL WORKING ON THE BOARD, AREN'T YOU?
>> YEAH. MS. BARKSDALE HASN'T KICKED ME OFF THE BOARD YET, SO I DO FREQUENT THE BOARD.
>> YES WELL YOU'RE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
>> THANK YOU. AT THIS TIME, IT IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
>> I RECOMMEND ACCEPTANCE OF THE INNOVATIVE TEACHING GRANTS FROM THE CHISHOLM TRAIL EDUCATION FOUNDATION FOR CROWLEY ISD EDUCATORS, AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS. IS THERE A SECOND?
>> I THINK THAT TRUSTEE ROBINSON, I HEARD YOU IN THIS EAR, BUT IT CAN BE TRUSTEE DAVIS AS WELL FOR A SECONDING, AND AT THIS TIME WE'LL MOVE TO VOTE.
THE MOTION PASSES AND WE HAVE AN ABSTAINED FOR GARY GRASSIA.
HE SERVES ON THE BOARD WITH THE FOUNDATION, BUT IT PASSES UNANIMOUSLY. THANK YOU.
AT THIS TIME, WE'LL MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM 9.2, THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION BED LOCAL BOARD MEETINGS, PUBLIC PARTICIPATION. DR. WRIGHT.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, MR. RUBY BATISTE, WILL PRESENT THIS POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
>> THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING, BOARD OF TRUSTEES, DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD, BOARD PRESIDENT AND DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT, DR. WRIGHT.
I'M SO USED TO SAYING DR. MCFARLAND SO THAT WAS MY HESITATION.
TONIGHT I STAND BEFORE YOU TO DISCUSS BED LOCAL AND WHAT'S BEEN TRANSPIRING IN OUR POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE.
AS YOU ALL ARE AWARE, AT OUR LAST REGULAR BOARD MEETING AT THE END OF AUGUST, WE DID HAVE A LEVEL 3 GRIEVANCE, AND WHAT WAS BROUGHT BEFORE US WAS HOW WE CAN BE A BETTER PARTNERSHIP WITH THOSE WHO WANT TO SPEAK DURING OPEN FORUM.
THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE MET ON TWO DATES, SEPTEMBER 7, 2022, AND SEPTEMBER 20TH OF 2022 TO DISCUSS LOCAL POLICY BED AND HOW WE COULD IMPROVE THE PROCESS AND REMOVE ANY POSSIBLE BARRIERS.
THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE REVIEWED BOARD PROCEDURES REGARDING PUBLIC PARTICIPATION AT BOARD MEETINGS ON BOTH OF THOSE DATES.
THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDS APPROVING SOME PROPOSED REVISIONS TO BED LOCAL, WHICH IS IN YOUR BOARD PACKET, AND ANOTHER REVISION AND ONE OF IT,
[01:10:04]
TO BASICALLY WHICH IS OUTSIDE OF THE POLICY, IS TO CHANGE HOW INDIVIDUALS SIGN UP ELECTRONICALLY.WE'RE GOING TO GO INTO THAT, AND THEN AS FAR AS THE ACTUAL LOCAL POLICY THAT THE COMMITTEE IS BRINGING BEFORE YOU IS A ONE-SENTENCE STATEMENT THAT JUST BASICALLY REFERS THEM TO THE DISTRICT WEBSITE TO FIND THE FORM, AND THERE WOULD BE NO OTHER CHANGES TO THE ACTUAL LOCAL POLICY.
WE WILL STILL HAVE THE ONE HOUR BEFORE MEETING SIGN UP, WHETHER ELECTRONICALLY OR IN PERSON.
THEY WOULD STILL HAVE THE THREE MINUTES TO SPEAK.
BUT IT IS JUST TO DIRECT THEM TO THE DISTRICT WEBSITE TO FIND OUT HOW TO SIGN UP TO SPEAK.
THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE IS MADE UP OF THE FOLLOWING TRUSTEES.
TRUSTEE DARYL DAVIS, DR. MIA HALL, MS. NEDRA ROBINSON, DR. MCFARLAND, MYSELF, RUBY BATISTE, AND ANTHONY KIRSCHNER, OUR CHIEF COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER.
WHAT WE'D LIKE TO DO AT THIS MOMENT IS TO LET MR. KIRSCHNER COME BEFORE YOU AND LOOK AT HOW WE DO THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATIONS AND THE TRUSTEES, HOW WE HAVE BASICALLY MODIFIED HOW INDIVIDUALS SIGN UP ELECTRONICALLY BY REMOVING THAT BARRIER OF EMAIL LATE DELIVERING. MR. KIRSCHNER.
>> THANK YOU, MS. BATISTE, MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, AND DR. WRIGHT, OUR CURRENT PROCEDURE FOR SIGNING UP TO SPEAK IN OPEN FORUM, THAT A PDF VERSION OF THIS FORM IS POSTED ON OUR WEBSITE OR YOU CAN GET A PAPER COPY HERE AT OUR BUILDING.
WITH THE PDF FORM ON THE WEBSITE, THE CURRENT PRACTICE WOULD BE TO DOWNLOAD THAT, FILL IT OUT, AND THEN EMAIL IT BACK INTO OUR OFFICE BEFORE THE ONE HOUR BEFORE THE MEETING TO SPEAK THAT NIGHT AT THE BOARD MEETING.
WE OBVIOUSLY HAVE ENCOUNTERED BARRIERS WITH THAT, AND SO WE HAVE CREATED AN ONLINE SUBMISSION FORM.
THANK YOU TO TRUSTEE DARYL DAVIS, THROUGH RECOMMENDATION OF UTILIZING FORM SITE, IT'S AN ONLINE FORM TOOL WE ALREADY HAD ACCESS TO ON OUR DISTRICT.
WE USE THIS FOR A LOT OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF FORMS, AND SO WHAT WE'VE CREATED IS A POSSIBLE ONLINE FORM.
THEY'D BE LINKED ON OUR WEBSITE THAT IS VERY EASY FOR PEOPLE TO FILL OUT.
I'M GOING TO HAVE, AS I'M TALKING, MR. HANDY OVER HERE, JUST DOING A TEST SUBMISSION.
JUST HOW EASY THIS IS FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS WHO WANT TO PARTICIPATE, NOT ONLY DURING OPEN FORUM, BUT ALSO DURING THOSE MEETINGS AT PUBLIC HEARINGS.
WHETHER THAT'S THE FIRST REPORT, THE BUDGET, TAX RATE, THINGS LIKE THAT.
I LOVE SPEAKING ON THAT TOPIC.
MY TOPIC TONIGHT WILL BE CROWLEY ISD EXCELLENCE.
YOU'LL SEE THERE ARE SOME REQUIRED BOXES THAT MUST BE FILLED OUT.
THOSE ARE THE ONES WITH THE RED LITTLE ASTERISK BY THEM.
IF YOU DON'T FILL THEM OUT, IT DOESN'T LET YOU SUBMIT.
MR. HANDY WILL CONTINUE SUBMITTING THOSE AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT THAT USER GETS ON THE BACK-END.
WE WILL CONTINUE FOR PEOPLE THAT DON'T HAVE ONLINE ACCESS TO HAVE PAPER COPIES AVAILABLE HERE AT CENTRAL OFFICE.
NO PRESSURE, MR. HANDY. [LAUGHTER] IT DOES HAVE A SIGNATURE BOX AS WELL THAT WORKS ON YOUR COMPUTER OR YOUR SMART DEVICE.
THANK YOU. IT GIVES A CONFIRMATION.
IT DOES HAVE A NOTE IN THERE THAT IF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS NEEDED, WE WILL BE CONTACTING THEM USING THE CONTACT INFORMATION THEY PROVIDED, THANKING THEM FOR THEIR INTEREST IN PARTICIPATING.
BUT WHAT WE REALLY LIKE IS THIS PRINTABLE RECEIPT OPTION AND WHEN YOU CLICK ON THAT, IT SHOWS THE SUBMITTER EVERYTHING THAT THEY'VE SUBMITTED ALONG WITH, SCROLL DOWN A LITTLE, WHEN IT WAS SUBMITTED, DATE, AND TIMESTAMP.
THAT IS EMAILED TO US, BUT IT'S ALSO SAVED IN FORM SITE.
BEFORE EVERY MEETING WE'LL GO IN AND SEE EVERYONE WHO'S SIGNED UP TO SPEAK IN OPEN FORUM.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO SIGN UP THAT DAY.
YOU COULD SIGN UP THE DAY BEFORE OR THE WEEK BEFORE.
YOU JUST LET US KNOW WHEN YOU'RE FILLING OUT THE FORM, WHAT MEETING YOU'RE SIGNING UP.
IF THERE'S ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT WAS SUBMITTED IN THE FORM, WE'LL HAVE THEIR CONTACT INFORMATION AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO REACH OUT TO THEM.
WE DO BELIEVE THIS PROCESS IS EASIER FOR OUR STAKEHOLDERS TO PARTICIPATE IN OUR MEETINGS.
THANK YOU AGAIN, MR. DAVIS, FOR THE SUGGESTION.
ONCE WE GET IT BUILT AND LAUNCHED, BASED WITH OPINION AND YOUR APPROVAL, I THINK IT'LL BE EASIER NOT ONLY FOR THE CITIZENS AND STAKEHOLDERS, BUT ALSO OUR ADMINISTRATIVE TEAM.
ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT PROCESS?
>> I WOULD LIKE TO ADD ONE THING TOO.
YOU CAN ALSO USE THIS ON YOUR SMARTPHONE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE A COMPUTER.
IT IS REALLY USER-FRIENDLY AND IT REMOVES A LOT OF BARRIERS. TRUSTEE GRASSIA.
>> THE TIMESTAMP IS THE OFFICIAL STAMP?
>> IF THERE ARE ANY DISCREPANCIES WHATSOEVER, THEY BRING IT IN.
THEY SAID IT'S 459, 59, PRESENT IT, AND THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO TO TALK?
>> ABSOLUTELY. THAT'S WHAT WE REALLY LIKE ABOUT THIS OPTION IN THE PRINTABLE RECEIPT THEY HAVE ACCESS TO,
[01:15:01]
BUT THEN ALSO WE HAVE ACCESS TO IT ON THE BACK END AS WELL.THE ACTUAL TIME THEY HIT ''SUBMIT'', IT'S NOT BASED ON FILTERS FOR EMAILS AND THINGS LIKE THAT TO GO THROUGH.
IT MAY TAKE A LITTLE BIT FOR THE EMAIL TO COME IN THROUGH US, BUT THE TIMESTAMP WILL BE THE OFFICIAL TIMESTAMP.
>> I JUST HAD A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT THE ADDRESS.
IS IT LINKED TO MAPS SO THAT IT CATCHES, FOR INSTANCE, 76136 OR A ZIP CODE THAT MAY BE OFF.
IS IT LIKE OUR SMART DEVICES? DOES IT CAPTURE ANY OF THAT? IT MAY NOT. I DON'T KNOW.
>> I'M NOT SURE, BUT WE CAN FIND OUT BY DOING A FEW TESTS.
IF LET'S SAY THEY HAVE THE ZIP CODE WRONG, I'M ASSUMING THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE REQUESTING.
>> OR THE ADDRESS IF THEY DON'T MATCH.
>> IT WON'T KEEP THEM FROM PARTICIPATING.
THIS IS NOT REMOVING ANY BARRIERS.
THE ONE THING THAT THEY WILL HAVE TO DO IS WE WANT TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PEOPLE ELECTRONICALLY SO WE WOULD REALLY LIKE THEIR REAL EMAIL ADDRESS.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HAS TO BE REALLY ACCURATE AND THAT WE HELP TO BE ACCURATE.
WE'D ALSO LIKE TO GIVE THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS ANY OPPORTUNITIES TO SHARE ANYTHING YOU LIKE ABOUT BED LOCAL.
>> THANK YOU, MS. BATISTE AND MR. KIRSCHNER.
I JUST THINK THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT THE LEVEL 3 GRIEVANCE TOOK PLACE AT OUR LAST MEETING IN THE MONTH OF AUGUST, AND THE COMMITTEE MET ON SEPTEMBER 7TH AS WELL AS SEPTEMBER 20TH.
BECAUSE I THINK THAT THERE MAY BE THE APPEARANCE THAT THE FINDINGS OF THE GRIEVANCE OR THE COMPONENTS OF THAT PARTICULAR SITUATION WERE NOT TAKEN SERIOUSLY OR WERE NOT ADDRESSED IN A TIMELY FASHION.
BUT IT DOES TAKE TIME FOR US TO MAKE SURE THAT WHATEVER SUGGESTIONS THAT WE COME UP WITH ARE PROPERLY VETTED.
CAN YOU PLEASE SPEAK TO THE PROCESS BEYOND OUR MEETING ON SEPTEMBER 7TH, THE FINDINGS THAT WE HAD IN OUR SEPTEMBER 20TH MEETING WHICH BROUGHT US HERE TODAY.
CAN YOU JUST QUICKLY ARTICULATE THAT?
AFTER THE COMMITTEE CAME TOGETHER, BASICALLY, WE RAN THROUGH SOME SCENARIOS, SOME BARRIERS, AND THE TRUSTEES REALLY LED THE EFFORT ON WHAT THEY WANTED TO SEE HAPPEN FOR THE COMMUNITY AND HOW TO REMOVE THOSE BARRIERS THAT OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS WERE STATING THAT THEY MAY HAVE EXPERIENCED AND ONE DID ACTUALLY EXPERIENCE.
WE LOOKED AT THAT AGAINST OUR CURRENT POLICY WHICH WAS ALREADY APPROVED THEN ADOPTED AND WE WERE UTILIZING AND IT ALSO CAME FROM TASBY.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE STILL OPERATING UNDER.
ANYTIME YOU HAVE TO CHANGE ANY POLICY, YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT BACK THROUGH TASBY, WHO ALSO VETS IT THROUGH THE LEGAL TEAM.
THE GAP IN TIME BETWEEN THE 7TH AND THE 20TH IS WHERE YOU SEE WE TOOK OUR DRAFTS TO TASBY.
WE HAD TO BOUNCE SOME BACK-AND-FORTH AND BRING IT BACK TO THE COMMITTEE ON THE 20TH, AND THEN THE COMMITTEE SAID, YES, WE FEEL REALLY GOOD ABOUT WHAT IS BEING PRESENTED AND WE REALLY WOULD LOVE BRINGING IT BEFORE THE BOARD SO WE CAN SERVICE OUR COMMUNITY AND I CAN GO A LOT DEEPER TOO IF YOU NEED ME TO.
>> NO, MA'AM. THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I JUST WANTED IT TO BE ARTICULATED WHAT THAT PROCESS LOOKED LIKE JUST TO COMBAT THE MISCONCEPTION THAT THINGS AREN'T MOVING.
THINGS ARE MOVING, OFTENTIMES BEHIND THE SCENES, AND SO THERE'S A PROCESS BEFORE WE CAN BRING IT PUBLICLY JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL OF OUR I'S ARE DOTTED AND OUR T'S ARE CROSSED.
THANK YOU BOTH SO MUCH FOR THE WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE.
>> THANK YOU, AND THIS IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
>> I RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE PROPOSED REVISIONS TO BE THE LOCAL AND ADDRESSING THE USAGE OF ELECTRONIC SUBMISSION SPEAKER REQUEST FORMS IN THE BOARD PROCEDURES AS PRESENTED BY THE POLICY REVIEW COMMITTEE.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS, IS THERE A SECOND?
>> THANK YOU DR. HALL. MOVE THE VOTE PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.
>> PRESENT OF MY FOOT. I JUST WANTED TO THANK MS. PATTIES AND MR. KIRSCHNER AND THE COMMITTEE FOR THEIR TIME TO TRUSTEE DAVIS' POINT.
I THINK THAT WE WERE VERY RESPONSIVE AND TIMELY AND EVERYONE MAKING THEMSELVES AVAILABLE.
WE DEFINITELY HAD 100 PERCENT PARTICIPATION ON EACH OF OUR MEETINGS.
I JUST WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR LEADING THE WORK AND LEADING THE CHARGE AND GET IT TURNED AROUND SO QUICKLY.
[01:20:01]
>> AWESOME. THANK YOU. DR. HALL.
AT THIS TIME, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM 9.3, THE MENTAL HEALTH PARTNERSHIP WITH CARE SOLACE.
IF I'M SAYING IT WRONG, PLEASE CORRECT ME.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. JOHN HAMLET AND MS. JENEAN FEAR, WILL PRESENT THIS POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
>> THANK YOU, DR. WRIGHT, MADAM PRESIDENT AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, AS YOU KNOW, DR. MCFARLAND SHARE BRIEFLY ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE.
ONE OF THE COMPONENTS OF THIS INITIATIVE IS THE FUTURE POTENTIAL ACTION ITEM OF CARE SOLACE.
IT'S A TWO-PRONGED SYSTEM IN WHICH IT PROVIDES SELF REFERRALS FOR COUNSELING SERVICES FOR FAMILIES, BUT ALSO COUNSELING SERVICES BY OUR COUNSELORS TO REFER STUDENTS OUT.
ALSO, ONE OF THE KEY COMPONENTS OF THIS PROGRAM IS THAT IT ALLOWS FOR SUPPORT SERVICES, FOR COUNSELING SERVICES FOR OUR EMPLOYEES AND THEIR FAMILIES.
I LIKE TO PRESENT TO YOU MS. JENEAN FEAR.
>> THANK YOU FOR THAT INTRODUCTION, DR. HAMLET.
GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. WRIGHT, SUCH A PLEASURE TO BE HERE.
I VERY MUCH APPRECIATE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT CARE SOLACE. MY NAME IS JENEAN FEAR.
I'M THE NATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS MANAGER WITH CARE SOLACE AND DIRECTLY WORKING WITH ALL OF OUR PARTNERSHIPS IN TEXAS.
THRILLED TO BE HERE THIS EVENING.
TO SHARE JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT WHAT WE DO AND REALLY WHO WE ARE, WE ARE A COMPANY ON A MENTAL HEALTH CARE MISSION, WANTING TO PROVIDE FAMILIES WITH A HAND TO HOLD AND TRULY BE THEIR CHAMPION AND THEIR ADVOCATE IN THE PROCESS AS THEY ARE TRYING TO NAVIGATE THE MENTAL HEALTH CARE SYSTEM.
IF ANYBODY IN THIS ROOM HAS EVER DONE IT, IT IS A VERY DIFFICULT PROCESS FOR FAMILIES TO DO ON THEIR OWN AND PRESENTS A LOT OF BARRIERS AND HOOPS THAT FAMILIES HAVE TO JUMP THROUGH ULTIMATELY.
AS A COMPANY, WE ARE IN OVER 525 SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE COUNTRY SERVING IN 31 STATES NOW, OVER FOUR MILLION STUDENTS AND OVER 15 MILLION STAFF AND FAMILY MEMBERS WHO HAVE TOUCHED OUR SERVICE SINCE 2017.
WE'VE BEEN CONCEPTUALIZED AS THE UBER OF MENTAL HEALTH, IF YOU WILL.
IN THE SAME WAY THAT UBER HAS FIGURED OUT A WAY TO BRING YOU A DRIVER WHEN YOU NEED A RIDE.
IT'S REALLY WHAT CARE SOLACE DOES FOR FAMILIES THAT WE SERVE AND MAKING SURE THAT THOSE MENTAL HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS ARE BROUGHT TO THEM.
MUCH OF IT HAS TO DO WITH NAVIGATING THE BARRIERS THAT ARE ON THE SCREEN THAT YOU SEE.
INSURANCE IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST BARRIERS TO MENTAL HEALTH CARE, WHETHER YOU HAVE IT OR WHETHER YOU DON'T.
IT PRESENTS A LOT OF HOOPS FOR FAMILIES TO ACTUALLY JUMP THROUGH.
I'M NOT SURE THERE'S ANYBODY THAT LOVES CALLING THAT NUMBER ON THE BACK OF THE CARD FOR GREAT CUSTOMER SERVICE.
THAT IS A BIG PIECE OF THE PUZZLE THAT WE HELP FAMILIES WITH AND NOT ONLY NAVIGATING AND FIGURING OUT THEIR INSURANCE AND WHO TAKES IT, BUT ALSO VERIFYING THAT INFORMATION WITH PROVIDERS AND THE CO-PAYS AS WELL.
ONE OF THE OTHER BIG HURDLES THAT EXIST RIGHT NOW ARE THE LONG WAIT TIMES THAT EXIST ACROSS THE COUNTRY, WHICH IS ANYWHERE ON AVERAGE FROM THREE WEEKS ALL THE WAY UP TO THREE MONTHS JUST TO GET AN INTAKE APPOINTMENT.
WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO NAVIGATE OUR WAYS AROUND THAT TO BE ABLE TO GET FAMILIES INTO CARE SOONER.
ULTIMATELY THEY DON'T GIVE UP ON THE PROCESS.
SOCIAL STIGMA IS STILL AT THE FOREFRONT OF WHAT WE DO.
WE TACKLE THAT BY MAKING SURE WE MATCH FAMILIES TO A TIGHT CULTURAL IDENTITY MATCH, AND MATCHING THEM TO PROVIDERS THAT ACTUALLY SPEAK THEIR PREFERRED LANGUAGE.
WE CAN START TO DROP THOSE BARRIERS AND GET FAMILIES TO SAY YES TO CARE INSTEAD OF NO.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PROCESS AND HOW IT WORKS, AND DR. HAMLET SHARED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THAT.
BUT ULTIMATELY, THE CARE SOLACE SERVICE IS COMPRISED OF THREE MAIN COMPONENTS OR FACETS REALLY.
ONE IS AN EXTERNAL FACING TOOL WHICH IS A SELF-SERVE, ANONYMOUS, CONFIDENTIAL PORTAL THAT IS PROVIDED TO THE DISTRICT BY A CUSTOMIZED URL LINK THAT WE PROVIDE FOR YOU THAT YOUR FAMILIES, YOUR STAFF CAN INTERACT WITH ON THEIR OWN TO FIND TRUSTED, VERIFIED COMMUNITY PROVIDERS.
IT BASICALLY WALKS FAMILIES THROUGH A HIGH LEVEL PRE-SCREEN WITH A HANDFUL OF QUESTIONS TO ANSWER WITH REGARDS TO THEIR ZIP CODE AND THEIR INSURANCE, AND WHAT TYPE OF TREATMENT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR.
THEN IT WILL PROVIDE THEM WITH A DATABASE LIST OF PROVIDERS IN THE COMMUNITY THAT ARE ALSO VERIFIED BY OUR VERIFICATION TEAM.
THE OTHER PATHWAY IS AT AN INTERNAL TOOL THAT WE PROVIDE YOUR MENTAL HEALTH CARE TEAMS WITH,
[01:25:03]
COUNSELORS, SOCIAL WORKERS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, ANYONE ON THE FRONTLINES WHO'S WORKING DIRECTLY WITH STUDENTS.WHEN THERE IS A NEED FOR A COMMUNITY REFERRAL, IF A STUDENT NEEDS MAYBE WRAPAROUND SUPPORTS OR LONGER-TERM SERVICES, CARE SOLACE COLLABORATES WITH YOUR TEAMS THROUGH A DASHBOARD THAT YOUR TEAM CAN DO WHAT WE CALL A WARM HAND-OFF.
OUR CARE COORDINATORS WILL ACTUALLY WORK DIRECTLY WITH THE FAMILY TO MAKE THE CALLS AND DO THE LEGWORK TO FIND A PROVIDER AND MAKE A CONNECTION.
MEANWHILE, YOUR TEAM HAS THEIR OWN DASHBOARD THAT IN REAL TIME IS GIVING THEM VISIBILITY AND TRANSPARENCY ON THE PROGRESS BEING MADE TO CONNECT TO THE FAMILY SO THAT YOUR COUNSELING TEAM, YOUR MENTAL HEALTH CARE TEAM, SEES THAT THAT FAMILY ACTUALLY DID GET AN APPOINTMENT.
BECAUSE WE FOLLOW UP WITH FAMILIES THE DAY AFTER THAT APPOINTMENT, WE WILL ACTUALLY NOTE THAT THE FAMILY ATTENDED THAT APPOINTMENT SO THAT YOUR TEAMS ARE AWARE OF THAT AS WELL.
REALLY THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO IS ACTUALLY OUR CARE COMPANION TEAM, WHICH IS THE FACET THAT OVERSEES THE OTHER TWO PIECES THAT CARE COMPANION TEAMS OR AS A 24/7, 365 TEAM.
WE SPEAK OVER 200 LANGUAGES AT CARE SOLACE.
THEY ARE THE FOLKS THAT WALK A FAMILY THROUGH FROM START TO FINISH WITH THE INSURANCE, VERIFYING ACCESS AND AVAILABILITY, FINDING APPOINTMENTS WITHIN A TIMELY MANNER, WHICH IS TYPICALLY WITHIN TWO WEEKS, WHICH IS OUR ULTIMATE GOAL.
THEN HELPING FAMILIES ENROLL INTO APPOINTMENTS.
THEY ARE REALLY ARE THE HEART AND SOUL OF WHAT WE DO.
THEY MAKE 50, 60, SOMETIMES 70 OR 80 CALLS PER FAMILY JUST TO FIND PROVIDERS THAT HAVE AVAILABILITY.
I WANT TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE DATA AND ANALYTICS THAT WE PROVIDE.
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE BOARD WOULD OBVIOUSLY HAVE ACCESS TO.
AS FAR AS BEING ABLE TO TAKE A PEEK AT WHAT'S REALLY HAPPENING AT YOUR DISTRICT.
THIS PROVIDES INFORMATION ON THE USAGE OF THE SYSTEM, HOW MANY COMMUNICATIONS WE SAVED YOUR STAFF FROM THE STAFF NOT HAVING TO MAKE THE COORDINATING CALLS THAT WE'VE DONE, TIME SAVED, MONEY SAVED ON THAT.
YOU SEE HOW MANY FAMILIES USE THE ANONYMOUS CONFIDENTIAL TOOL AS WELL AND BOOK THEIR OWN APPOINTMENTS.
THEN WE DO BREAK IT DOWN BY YOUR DEMOGRAPHICS, BY YOUR DSM-5 CATEGORY NEEDS.
YOU CAN SEE A DISTRICT-WIDE AS WELL AS THE SCHOOL SITE SNAPSHOTS.
MAYBE YOU SEE THAT ONE OF YOUR HIGH SCHOOLS HAS A PARTICULARLY HIGH DEPRESSION RATE THAT'S BEING REPORTED THAT KIDS ARE BEING TREATED FOR.
THEN WE ALSO ILLUMINATE THE TOP 10 INSURANCES BEING USED FOR SERVICES, AS WELL AS THE TOP 10 PROVIDERS IN YOUR BACKYARD WHO ARE PROVIDING THE MOST TIMELY ACCESS TO FAMILIES.
WE PUT TOGETHER A LIST OF SOME OF OUR TEXAS PARTNERS JUST TO GIVE YOU AN IDEA OF WHO WE'RE SERVING NOW.
THERE'S A HANDFUL ON THIS LIST OR THAT ARE NOT ON THIS LIST THAT ARE IN THE STAGES YOU'RE IN.
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT FINALIZING A POTENTIAL PARTNERSHIP.
BUT THIS GIVES YOU AN IDEA OF SOME OF OUR OUTREACH IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
REALLY THAT'S ALL I HAVE TO SHARE AND I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTIONS.
THE LAST PIECE THAT I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SHARE WITH YOU ALL IS A STORY OF THE WHY.
I USUALLY SHARE ANOTHER MOM STORY THAT I'M VERY CLOSE WITH.
BUT TONIGHT I'M GOING TO SHARE JUST A LITTLE BIT OF MINE.
BECAUSE I THINK IT REALLY DEMONSTRATES THE TRUE IMPACT OF CARE SOLACE, AND TRULY WHY I DO WHAT I DO AND CONSIDER THIS VERY MUCH A BLESSING TO BE A PART OF THIS COMPANY.
I'M A SINGLE MOM. I HAVE TWO BABIES THAT ARE 17 AND 19.
MY 19-YEAR-OLD HAS STRUGGLED WITH MENTAL HEALTH SINCE HE WAS 12.
I DISCOVERED HE WAS ENGAGING IN SELF-HARM AND SEVERELY DEPRESSED.
THAT BEGAN MY JOURNEY INTO MENTAL HEALTH.
TEARS, SWEAT, BLOOD, PHONE CALLS, EVERYTHING TO GET HIM TO CARE THAT HE'S NEEDED IN THESE LAST FEW YEARS, WHICH HAS RANGED FROM THERAPY TO PSYCHIATRY, TO RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT, TO OUTPATIENT.
I'VE DONE IT ALL. FAST-FORWARD TO JUST RECENTLY, MY 17-YEAR-OLD JUST LAST WEEKEND RELAPSED WITH A DRUG ABUSE PROBLEM.
OUT OF THE BLUE I HAVE CARE SOLACE AND I CALLED THEM.
I ASKED THEM TO GO TO WORK FOR ME BECAUSE IT WAS URGENT AND I NEEDED HELP.
WITHIN TWO HOURS I HAD TWO TREATMENT PROGRAMS BEGINNING THE INTAKE PROCESS AND THE ASSESSMENT PROCESS.
WITH SADNESS AND ALSO RELIEF MY SON IS GOING TO BE ADMITTED TO HIS RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAM NEXT MONDAY.
THAT IS THE TRUE DEMONSTRATION OF THE IMPACT OF WHAT WE DO.
I NEVER THOUGHT I'D HAVE TO USE IT FOR MYSELF, BUT I DID AND I WAS SO GRATEFUL FOR IT.
[01:30:04]
TO SHARE THIS WITH YOU AND TO SHARE THE WORK THAT I DO IS A BLESSING BECAUSE I BELIEVE SO MUCH IN IT.IF WE CAN HELP ONE FAMILY LIKE MINE, IT'S WORTH EVERYTHING.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. I'M HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS ABOUT THE SERVICE AND WHAT CARE SOLACE IS ALL ABOUT.
>> WELL, THANK YOU, MS. FIR, FOR YOUR CANDOR AND FOR SHARING YOUR STORY, BUT ALSO SHARING THE INFORMATION.
I JUST HAVE A QUICK QUESTION, I MAY HAVE TWO BUT, PLEASE HELP ME REMEMBER IF WE'VE PILOTED THIS PROGRAM OR IS IT JUST WE'RE GOING IN AND THEN WE'LL SEE THE RESULTS AND EVERYTHING TO START HELPING PARENTS.
>> YES, WE'RE BASICALLY BRINGING IT BEFORE THE BOARD IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM TO VOTE ON.
ONE THING THAT MS. FIR DIDN'T SHARE WITH YOU IS THE FACT THAT IT ALSO HAS A LIVE CHAT IN WHICH IF A STUDENT CALLS PARENT CALL, THEY WOULD SPEAK TO THEM IMMEDIATELY.
ALSO IN REGARDS TO IF YOU DO NOT HAVE AN INSURANCE, THEY ACTUALLY LOCATE SOMEONE THAT WILL PROVIDE COUNSELING SERVICES FOR THOSE THAT DON'T HAVE INSURANCE OR ON A SLIDING SCALE, THEY HAVE OVER 200,000 PROVIDERS.
I JUST WANTED TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU ALSO.
>> THANK YOU. MY ONLY OTHER QUESTION, BECAUSE I LIKED HEARING ABOUT I THINK IT'S WARM HAND-OFF.
BUT STUDENTS CAN COME DIRECTLY TO YOU OR THEY CAN BE IDENTIFIED THROUGH THEIR COUNSELOR OR TEACHER AND THAT HAPPENS, IS THAT CORRECT?
>> CORRECT. YES. IF THAT STUDENT IS OF LEGAL AGE TO CONSENT TO THEIR OWN MENTAL HEALTH CARE AND THEY COME DIRECTLY TO US, WE CAN CERTAINLY HELP THEM FIND FREE AND SLIDING SCALE SERVICES.
OBVIOUSLY, INSURANCE PROBABLY ISN'T AN OPTION.
BUT YES, MOST OF OUR WARM HAND-OFFS ARE DONE FROM COUNSELING TEAMS, SOCIAL WORKERS, ETC, WHO HAVE STUDENTS THAT NEED LONGER-TERM SERVICES OR WRAPAROUND SUPPORTS BEYOND THE SCHOOL-BASED.
THEY'LL COME TO US THROUGH THAT PROCESS.
>> I HAVE A QUESTION, DR. MAYFIELD.
>> FIRST OF ALL, I'M GLAD YOU HAVE CARE SOLACE, SO THAT YOUR CHILDREN GET THE HELP THEY NEEDED.
ALL OF THESE SITUATIONS AT SOME LEVEL COULD BE CONSIDERED EMERGENCY.
BUT WHAT HAPPENS IN A REAL EMERGENCY IN TERMS OF THAT WARM HAND-OFF? WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
>> THAT'S A REALLY GREAT QUESTION.
WITH REGARDS TOO, OBVIOUSLY WE'RE NOT CRISIS INTERVENTIONISTS.
THERE ARE A COUPLE OF COMPONENTS TO HOW WE HANDLE WHAT WE CONSIDER A CRISIS SITUATION.
FIRST OF ALL, OUR CARE COMPANIONS UNDERGO OVER A 120 HOURS OF ALL TYPES OF TRAINING, EVERYTHING FROM IMMINENT THREAT, STATE MANDATED REPORTING, EMPATHY, CUSTOMER SERVICE, INSURANCE, ETC.
THEY ARE NOT CRISIS INTERVENTIONISTS.
BUT IF WE DO HAVE A PARTNERSHIP WITH THE CRISIS PREVENTION, SUICIDE PREVENTION HOT-LINE, IF A FAMILY CALLS US IN AN EXACERBATED SITUATION AT HOME, WE WILL CONFERENCE CALL IN A CRISIS INTERVENTIONIST AND CONNECT THEM TO THE FAMILY RIGHT THERE.
IF IT IS SOMETHING THAT IS DEEMED TO BE IMMINENT THREAT TO ONESELF, OR ON OTHERS WE CALL 911 OBVIOUSLY.
NOW, ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THAT, WE DO HAVE AN INTERNAL ESCALATION PROCESS.
OUR CARE COMPANIONS ARE OVERSEEN BY A GROUP OF LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS SO THAT WE CAN TRIAGE HIGH URGENCY SITUATIONS.
IF SOMEONE INDICATES THAT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THEY FELT LIKE THEY WANTED TO KILL THEMSELVES, BUT IT'S NOT IMMINENT, ANY INDICATION OF SUICIDAL IDEATION IS AUTOMATICALLY ESCALATED THROUGH TO THOSE LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKERS WHO TRIAGE IT ON A HIGHER URGENCY LEVEL JUST BECAUSE OF THAT INDICATION.
WE RECOVER IT FROM A COUPLE OF DIFFERENT BASIS WITH REGARDS TO ANY TYPE OF CRISIS.
>> CAN I ASK A QUESTION? I KNOW THAT YOU HELP WITH BOTH INSURED AND NON-INSURED FAMILIES.
IT'S PROBABLY NOT A SUCCESS RATE, BUT THE LIKELIHOOD OF THEM BEING ABLE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SERVICES.
WHAT IS THE LIKELIHOOD OF A FAMILY WHO ISN'T INSURED VERSUS A FAMILY THAT IS INSURED.
I GUESS MY QUESTION WHEN I'M REALLY TRYING TO GET TO IS FOR THOSE FAMILIES WHO ARE UNINSURED, WILL THEY ENJOY, AND I DON'T THINK THAT'S THE CORRECT WORD EITHER, BUT WILL THEY BE AS BENEFITED AS THOSE FAMILIES WHO ALREADY HAVE INSURANCE?
>> ABSOLUTELY. THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
JUST TO EXPLAIN A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HOW WE DEAL WITH FAMILIES, HOW WE WORK WITH FAMILIES THAT DO NOT HAVE INSURANCE.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR THOSE FREE AND SLIDING SCALE OR CARE
[01:35:03]
COMPANIONS COME BACK TO THEM WITH AT LEAST THREE OPTIONS.THE WAY THEY'RE PRESENTED IS I FOUND A PROVIDER THAT CAN SEE YOU NEXT TUESDAY AT 3:00.
THEY HAVE A FIVE-DOLLAR COPAY.
I HAVE A PROVIDER THAT'S A LITTLE BIT FURTHER AWAY FROM YOUR HOUSE.
THEY HAVE AN APPOINTMENT NEXT WEEK, BUT IT'S FREE.
WE BREAK DOWN THE OPTIONS SO THE FAMILIES CAN TRULY MAKE THE BEST DECISION FOR THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES AND ULTIMATELY AGAIN, GET THEM INTO CARE.
WE'LL BRING THEM AS MANY OPTIONS AS WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT IF THEY REALLY WANT THAT CARE, WE'LL GET THEM APPOINTED.
>> DR. HALL CAN I SHARE SOMETHING? ALSO THROUGH PROVIDERS, THERE WILL BE PROVIDERS THAT WILL BE TAKING MEDICAID, IN MANY OF THIS WHICH IS A STATE INSURANCE IN WHICH PROVIDERS WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THEM ON A SLIDING SCALE OR FOR FREE.
THEN THE STATE REIMBURSE THEM FOR THE COUNSELING SERVICES.
I WANTED TO JUST SHARE THAT WITH YOU.
>> QUICK QUESTION. EARLIER YOU MENTIONED STUDENTS BEING AT LEGAL AGE PROVIDING CONSENT.
BUT WHAT IF A STUDENT IS EXPERIENCING SOME TYPE OF MENTAL TRAUMAS, SUBSTANCE ABUSE, SOMETHING ELSE WHERE THEIR FAMILY INITIATES, BUT BECAUSE THEY'RE 18 OR 19, ALTHOUGH THEY'RE A STUDENT WHAT HAPPENS IN THOSE CASES?
>> GREAT QUESTION. [LAUGHTER] IF THE STUDENT IS 18 OR A LEGAL ADULT, OBVIOUSLY, THAT STUDENT IS STILL GOING TO NEED TO CONSENT TO CARE.
SIMILAR TO MY SITUATION WITH MY 19-YEAR-OLD.
I NEED HIM TO CONSENT TO HIS CARE NOW.
WE WOULD STILL NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THAT STUDENT WAS CONSENTING AND CONSENTING TO CODE OF CARE HERE.
>> ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?
IS THERE A RECOMMENDATION FROM THE BOARD?
>> I RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE 2022-2023 CARE SOLACE SERVICE AGREEMENT AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS, IS THERE A SECOND?
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE LYONS. MOVE TO VOTE, PLEASE.
IF WE'RE WAITING FOR DR. HALL, SHE STEPPED IN.
SHE HAD TO LEAVE. DO YOU WANT US TO DO SHOW OF HANDS? [BACKGROUND] WE'LL WAIT. OH, YES.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.
THANK YOU, MS. FIR FOR YOUR PRESENTATION THEN FOR THE INFORMATION APPRECIATE IT.
>> LOOK FORWARD TO SERVING YOUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY.
>> THANK YOU. WE HAVE ONE FUTURE ACTION ITEM.
[10.0 Future Action Item(s)]
