I DON'T WANT IT TO ME. WE'RE AT OUR BOARD REPORT ITEMS.
[4.0 Board Report Item(s)]
AGENDA ITEM 4.1, THE 2022 NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF BLACK SCHOOL EDUCATORS CONFERENCE AND 2022 COUNCIL OF URBAN BOARDS OF EDUCATION ANNUAL CONFERENCE.FEW OF OUR TRUSTEES HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND ONE OR BOTH OF THESE CONFERENCES.
AT THIS TIME, IF ANY OF THEM THAT ATTENDED WOULD LIKE TO SHARE JUST SOME COMMENTS OR FEEDBACK.
>> SURE. MADAM PRESIDENT, IF I MAY.
THIS WAS AN OPPORTUNITY AT FIRST FOR ME TO ATTEND BOTH THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF BLACK SCHOOL EDUCATORS AS WELL AS THE COUNCIL OF URBAN BOARDS OF EDUCATION CONVENTION AND IT WAS TO JAM PACK WEEKS, OF COURSE, BECAUSE OF THE HURRICANE EARLIER THIS YEAR, THE CUBE CONFERENCE WAS MOVED TO DECEMBER.
I HAD THE PLEASURE AND THE PRIVILEGE OF REPRESENTING CROWLEY ISD FIRST IN OUR NATION'S CAPITAL AT THE NATIONAL ALLIANCE OF BLACK SCHOOL EDUCATORS CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE.
WE CERTAINLY WANT TO GIVE KUDOS TO THAT ORGANIZATION AGAIN FOR 50 YEARS OF SERVICE.
SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR ME OF THE CONFERENCE WAS, I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACTUALLY SIT WITH DR.
MCFARLAND DURING A SUPERINTENDENT THINK TANK, JUST ON ADDRESSING SOME OF THE ISSUES THAT PERTAINS TO TEACHER SHORTAGES AND OF COURSE THAT CONTINUING ISSUE THAT WE'RE HAVING ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
IT WAS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY TO SIT WITH EDUCATIONAL LEADERS AND THOUGHT LEADERS IN EDUCATION DURING THAT THINK TANK AND REALLY JUST BEGIN TO CONSIDER HOW WE CAN CERTAINLY RECRUIT AND RETAIN QUALITY EDUCATORS.
ONE OF THE TAKEAWAYS FOR ME WAS JUST HOW BLESSED WE ARE HERE IN CROWLEY ISD
[00:10:01]
THAT WE'RE ALREADY BEING INNOVATIVE IN OUR ATTEMPTS TO ADDRESS THIS ISSUE.THERE WERE SOME THINGS THAT WERE BEING CONSIDERED ACROSS THE COUNTRY THAT WE'RE ALREADY DOING HERE IN CROWLEY ISD.
WE ARE CERTAINLY LEADING ACROSS THE NATION, IF YOU WILL, WITH OUR INNOVATION AND SOME THINGS THAT WE'RE WANTING TO DO TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE GIVING THE BEST OPPORTUNITY POSSIBLE TO OUR STUDENTS.
THEN I ALSO HAD THE PRIVILEGE GOING TO THE COUNCIL OF URBAN BOARDS OF EDUCATION CONFERENCE IN MIAMI, FLORIDA.
WE WERE FORTUNATE TO HAVE, AS THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER, ROMAN NATABI TUTU, WHO IS THE DAUGHTER OF ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU THE LATE ARCHBISHOP DESMOND TUTU AND HER KEY NOTE ADDRESS WAS REALLY IMPACTFUL AS SHE TALKED ABOUT THE NEED FOR RECONCILIATION AND IF THERE'S ONE THING THAT WE ARE ALWAYS BEING BOMBARDED WITH, PARTICULARLY IN OUR COUNTRY, ARE THE POLARIZATION OF POLITICS AND THE GREAT DIVIDE THAT EXISTS.
BUT SHE WAS ABLE TO SPEAK FROM HER EXPERIENCE BEING IN APARTHEID, SOUTH AFRICA AND ALSO BEING THERE AS THE LATE NELSON MANDELA WAS FREED FROM PRISON, ELECTED AS THE PRESIDENT AND HOW HE BEGAN TO HEAL THE COUNTRY OF SOUTH AFRICA.
SHE WAS AN AMAZING SPEAKER AND I REALLY THINK THAT IT WAS APROPOS FOR HER TO SPEAK IN THAT SETTING.
ALSO, I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF SITTING, AS WELL AS TRUSTEES STEVENSON AND TRUSTEE HALL WHO ATTENDED THAT CONFERENCE AS WELL.
WE ALL SIT IN ONE OF THE SESSIONS THAT WAS SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO TALK ABOUT STUDENT VOICE.
ONCE AGAIN, I'M PROUD TO SAY THAT WE IN CROWLEY ISD ARE DOING THINGS THAT OTHER PEOPLE WHO ARE JUST NOW CATCHING ON TO ACROSS THE COUNTRY.
AS I SIT HERE AND I LOOK AT OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS, AND I KNOW DR. MCFARLAND HAS HIS COUNCIL WHERE HE MEETS WITH STUDENTS AND WHAT NOT STUDENTS.
I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN AT THE FOCUS IN AT THE FOREFRONT OF WHAT WE DO HERE IN CROWLEY ISD.
AGAIN, AS THIS WAS REVOLUTIONARY TO SOME, I WAS ABLE TO SIT THERE WITH MY, WITH MY HEAD HELD HIGH WITH MY CHEST OUT BECAUSE STUDENT VOICES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN IMPORTANT TO WHAT'S HERE IN CROWLEY ISD.
AGAIN, IT WAS AN AMAZING OPPORTUNITY AND AMAZING EXPERIENCE TO REPRESENT OUR DISTRICT AND THANK YOU ALL FOR GIVING ME, AS WELL AS OUR OTHER TRUSTEES THE OPPORTUNITY OF DOING SO.
>> THANK YOU FOR REPRESENTING CROWLEY AND BRINGING SOME GREAT INFORMATION.
I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE ANYONE ELSE OUT. ANYBODY ELSE HERE?
THANK YOU AGAIN TRUSTEE DAVIS.
AT THIS TIME, WE DO HAVE SOME CAMPUS AND PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS,
[5.0 Campus / Program Highlights]
AGENDA ITEM 5.1 OAKMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, I AM EXCITED TO REALLY BRING FORWARD THIS NEXT RECOGNITION.
SOMETIMES PEOPLE THINK HARDEST THING TO DO IS TO GO FROM THE BOTTOM TO THE TOP AND THE BE ON TOP.
BUT IF YOU'VE BEEN IN ATHLETICS AND IN COMPETITION FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME, WHAT YOU REALLY KNOW IS THE HARDEST THING TO DO IS TO STATE BE ON TOP AND TO STAY ON TOP.
TO GO FROM REALLY GOOD, TO REALLY GREAT.
WE'RE HERE TONIGHT TO RECOGNIZE A CAMPUS, THAT HAS BEEN A REALLY GOOD CAMPUS IN CROWLEY ISD FOR A LONG TIME.
HOWEVER, THIS CAMPUS, AS YOU WILL SEE IN SHORT PERIOD OF TIME HAS NOT ONLY BECOME A GOOD CAMPUS, HAS BECOME ACTUALLY A GREAT CAMPUS AND WITH GREAT LEADERSHIP, A GREAT TEAM, DOING A PHENOMENAL JOB, OAKMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
LET'S WALK THROUGH A FEW SLIDES AND THEN WE'LL HEAR FROM OAKMONT.
HERE, OAKMONT RECEIVED THE CAMPUS RATING OF A. NOW SAY, A.
>> THAT WAS A. THAT'S THE BEST AND SO DID ASK THEM, GIVE THEM A HAND FOR RECEIVING A.
[APPLAUSE] BUT NOT ONLY DID THEY RECEIVE AN A, THEY RECEIVED THREE DISTINCTIONS.
THE DISTINCTION IS AWARDED WHEN YOU ARE AT THE TOP OF THE CATEGORY THAT YOU'RE BEING COMPARED AGAINST.
THEY WERE NOT ONLY AN A SCHOOL, THEY WERE AT THE TOP OF A DISTILLATION PROCEEDS.
BRIEF DISTINCTION. ONE IN SCIENCE, ONE IN POST-SECONDARY READINESS, AND ONE IN COMPARATIVE CLOSING THE GAP.
LET'S LOOK AT A COUPLE OF SLIDES.
LET'S LOOK AT WHAT WE'VE SEEN.
I'LL GIVE YOU A SECOND TO SEE THE SLOPE OF THAT LINE.
NOTICE THE LINE, IN 2018 WE HAVE 70 IN 2022 THEY WENT 91 IS OUTSTANDING [APPLAUSE] BUT IT DIDN'T STOP THERE WHEN YOU LOOK AT RELATIVE PERFORMANCE AND WE TALKED ABOUT BEING THE TOP IN TARRANT COUNTY.
[00:15:02]
WHEN YOU COMPARE OAKMONT TO OTHER DISTRICTS IN TARRANT COUNTY YOU'LL SEE THEY WENT FROM 77 IN 2018 TO 82 IN 2022.ONE OF THE HIGHEST PERFORMING AREAS IN RELATIVE PERFORMANCE.
GREAT JOB AGAIN, AT OAKMONT ELEMENTARY [APPLAUSE] A LOT OF PEOPLE TALK ABOUT CLOSING THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP.
AT OAKMONT ELEMENTARY THEY ARE DOING IT, OAKMONT RECEIVED A SCORE OF 88 IN CLOSING PERFORMANCE GAPS FORM THE STORE DURING THIS SIDE.
WE'RE DEFINITELY PROUD, OAKMONT HAS BEEN EXCELLENT AND IS EXCELLENT, ALL ACROSS THE BOARD, THEY ARE A GREAT SCHOOL, NO DOUBT. OVERALL ACCOUNTABILITY.
OAKMONT WENT FROM 76 TO A NINE.
I THOUGHT I HEARD SOME CLAPPING [APPLAUSE] I WANT TO SHOW YOU A COUPLE OF LITTLE SLIDE, BUT I THINK WE HAVE JUST A LITTLE BIT MORE TO SHOW AND I WANT YOU TO SIT HERE AND LISTEN TO THIS STORY.
OAKMONT ELEMENTARY STORY [MUSIC]
>> WHEN DR. BROWN ANNOUNCED, OAKMONT 90, I SCREAMED [LAUGHTER]. I SCREAMED.
I LITERALLY SCREAMED IN MY OFFICE, I CALLED IN MY AP AND MY TEAM.
WE WERE JUST SO EXCITED AND JUMPING FOR JOY JUST BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY OUR HARD WORK, IT PAID OFF.
>> LOOKING BACK ON THE PAST FEW YEARS, WE KNOW THAT WE'VE LIVED IN A REALLY DISRUPTED ENVIRONMENT.
THAT'S FOR EVERYBODY AND IT'S ESPECIALLY FOR THE KIDS IN OUR SCHOOLS.
WHEN YOU LOOK AT WHAT OAKMONT HAS DONE, YOU GO ALL THE WAY BACK TO 2019, IT WAS ONE OF OUR LAST SCHOOL YEARS, THEY WERE A C RATED CAMPUS.
NOW IN 2022, COMING OUT THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PANDEMIC RATED AS AN A, THAT'S IMPRESSIVE.
THEY'VE BEEN ABLE TO TAKE THEIR STUDENTS FROM WHERE THEY WERE IN 2019, ADDRESSED THOSE GAPS THAT HAVE COME UP DURING COVID, AND STILL MANAGED TO MOVE THE CAMPUS FORWARD.
>> EVERYONE WORKS SO HARD THAT THE HEARTS ARE THERE AT THE END OF THE DAY. IT'S HARD WORK.
SOMETIMES IT MAY BE STAYING LATE IN THE EVENING, COMING UP ON WEEKENDS, DOING WHATEVER YOU HAVE TO DO, BUT JUST DOING IT FROM YOUR HEART.
IT WAS A JOYOUS FEELING, KNOWING THAT THE HARD WORK WE'VE PUT IN HAS MADE AN IMPACT ON STUDENTS.
WHICH IS THE MAIN PURPOSE OF IT IS THAT, WE'RE SEEING STUDENT GROWTH AND THAT'S BEING RECOGNIZED.
>> THERE ARE THREE KEY COMPONENTS TO OAKMONT'S SUCCESS.
TAKING THE STUDENTS FROM WHERE THEY WERE TO WHERE THEY NEEDED TO BE ON.
THE SECOND WAS THEIR DISTINCTION OF WHAT'S CALLED POST-SECONDARY READINESS.
THEN THE THIRD IS IN WHAT WE CALL CLOSING THE GAPS.
>> THE THING THAT'S IMPRESSIVE ABOUT OAKMONT'S PERFORMANCE IS, NOT ONLY ARE THEY MEETING THAT FEDERAL TARGET FOR WHERE STUDENTS RECEIVING SPECIAL EDUCATION SERVICES SHOULD PERFORM, THEY ARE BLOWING THAT TARGET OUT OF THE WATER.
>> WE HAVE AMAZING SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS THAT WORKED TIRELESSLY TO WORK WITH THE STUDENTS ON THEIR INDIVIDUAL PLANS, HAVE THEM MEET THEIR GOALS.
>> I THINK SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS HAVE BEEN SUCCESSFUL AT OAKMONT BECAUSE WE DO HOLD HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR THEM.
WE HAVE THE SAME EXPECTATIONS FOR THEM AS WE DO FOR ANY STUDENT IN THE CLASS.
WE'RE REHEATING ALL STUDENTS, WE ARE MEETING ALL STUDENTS, WE'RE CONSTANTLY MAKING ADJUSTMENTS, TRYING TO FIT AND MAKE SURE THAT THE KIDS ARE LEARNING, NO MATTER WHAT.
>> [FOREIGN] AND I'M GOING TO GIVE MYSELF WHAT, 10 WHAT?
>> WE ARE EXCITED ABOUT ALL OF OUR DISTINCTIONS, BUT THEN THOSE SECONDARY RATINGS IS IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE THAT MEANS NOT ONLY ARE WE ARE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL NEXT YEAR, WE ARE PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITHIN THE NEXT 10, 20, 30 YEARS.
WE WANT OUR KIDS TO BE THE NEXT DOCTORS, THE NEXT LAWYERS, THE NEXT POLITICIANS.
WE WANT THEM TO RUN OUR WORLD.
SO WE'RE GETTING THEM PREPARED FOR THAT IN THIS MOMENT, AND THAT'S VERY EXCITING.
>> IT'S NICE TO KNOW THAT OUR KIDS ARE LEARNING IN SUCH A GREAT ENVIRONMENT WITH THE GREAT SUPPORT THAT THEY HAVE HERE.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT I'VE BEEN IMPRESSED WITH.
>> WE ARE VERY HANDS-ON PARENTS.
WE ARE SUPPORTIVE AND LOVING, BUT WE DON'T PLAY WITH OUR KID'S EDUCATION.
WE REALLY FEEL THAT THEY'RE GETTING THE BEST CARE HERE THAT WE CAN GET ANYWHERE IN FORT WORTH AND CROWLEY.
>> GOOD MORNING. HOW ARE YOU THIS IS MORNING? GOOD MORNING, FRIEND.
>> THE MOST SPECIAL PART OF OAKMONT ELEMENTARY, IN MY OPINION, IS BIANCA GREEN.
SHE IS SO ENCOURAGING AND NURTURING TO OUR STAFF AND HER STUDENTS.
SHE LOVES ON US LIKE NO ONE I'VE EVER SEEN BEFORE.
[00:20:02]
I FEEL LIKE FAMILY.SHE BRAGS ON US, SHE NEVER PUTS PRESSURE ON US, SHE JUST GETS IN THERE WITH US, AND SHE WORKS THROUGH SITUATIONS WITH US.
>> THE TEACHERS ARE THE ONES DIRECTLY WORKING WITH THE STUDENTS EVERYDAY.
YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE AT THE END OF THE DAY THAT THEY'RE TAKEN CARE OF, SO THEY'LL IN TURN TAKE CARE OF THE KIDS.
>> I WILL BE CARRIED OUT OF HERE.
THIS IS A SCHOOL THAT ALLOWS YOU TO BE CREATIVE.
THERE IS A SENSE OF TRUST HERE.
I SEE IT EVERYWHERE, IT'S NOT JUST ME.
>> I LOVE THE LOVE HERE AT OAKMONT.
WE WERE ABLE TO ACT LIKE A FAMILY, WORK LIKE A TEAM IN ALL ASPECTS.
WE HAVE SO MANY PEOPLE BEHIND THE SCENES.
THIS IS NOT A PRINCIPAL THING, I CANNOT DO THIS BY MYSELF.
I HAVE A GREAT TEAM, I HAVE AMAZING SETS OF PRINCIPLE, GREAT INSTRUCTION SPECIALIST, INTERVENTIONISTS.
>> THIS IS MY HOME. THIS IS WHERE I CAN GROW AS AN EDUCATOR.
THIS IS WHERE I SEE KIDS GROW.
I JUST FEEL LIKE I THRIVE AND EVERYBODY IN THIS ENVIRONMENT THRIVES SO MUCH.
>> THIS IS A SCHOOL THAT REALLY HAS JOY.
WE LAUGH TOGETHER, WE DANCE TOGETHER, WE HAVE THE MUSIC GOING ON IN THE MORNING AND PEOPLE ARE DANCING.
WE CRY TOGETHER AND WE COME TOGETHER WHEN WE NEED TO.
BUT IT IS A SCHOOL THAT I THINK IS PROFOUNDLY JOYFUL.
WE'RE HAPPY TO BE TOGETHER, WE'RE TRULY THAT FAMILY SPIRIT, AND WE LOVE OUR KIDS.
I THINK THAT SHOWS, AND I THINK THAT IS WHAT ELEVATES THIS SCHOOL TO THAT A LEVEL, AND FRANKLY, BEYOND.
I THINK WE'RE GOING TO BE A FOR A LONG, LONG TIME.
>> LET'S GIVE IT UP FOR OAKMONT.
WE'D LIKE THE PRINCIPAL FROM OAKMONT, MS. BIANCA GREEN, COME UP FORWARD PLEASE.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, THE SCHOOL BOARD.
THIS IS AN AMAZING HONOR. WE HAVE PHENOMENAL TEACHERS, PHENOMENAL STUDENTS.
GREAT PARENTS, THEY'RE SUPPORTIVE IN ALL ASPECTS, SO IT'S DEFINITELY A WONDERFUL HONOR.
WE HAVE OUR A-TEAM SHIRTS, BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO ROCK THIS A, AND WE'RE GOING TO RIDE IT ALL THE WAY OUT.
WE HAVE SPECIAL GIFTS FOR YOU ALL AND I WANT TO PASS THEM AROUND.
>> ALSO, MS. GREEN, WHY DON'T YOU INTRODUCE YOUR TEACHERS, TO US AS WELL? [OVERLAPPING] YOU HAVE A TEAM?
>> ABSOLUTELY. I HAVE MY MARVELOUS SECRETARY, SHE ACTUALLY RUNS THE SCHOOL FOR US.
[LAUGHTER] MS. TEFANI ROCKER. SHE'S AMAZING.
[APPLAUSE] MS. DURAN KELLY, SHE'S OVER AT OUR STEM PROGRAM, WONDERFUL.
SHE WAS ACTUALLY TEACHER OF THE YEAR LAST YEAR, SHE'S KINDERGARTEN TEAM LEAD.
WE HAVE MS. [APPLAUSE] OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL HERE.
[APPLAUSE] MS. CHARLIE FARROW, SHE'S ONE OF OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS, HEARTBEAT AWARD WINNER.
[APPLAUSE] MS. TINA MCLEAN, IS AMAZING, BEEN DOING THIS FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
[APPLAUSE] WE HAVE MS. TAMARA FARMER, SHE JOINED US THIS YEAR [APPLAUSE] IS THERE ANYONE ELSE OUT HERE? [LAUGHTER] MS. HUSKY.
>> WONDERFUL. WHEN YOU SAID SPECIAL SOMETHING, I THOUGHT YOU SAID SPECIAL GUESTS AND I WAS THINKING ABOUT YOUR WHOLE TEAM.
YOU WERE SAYING YES, BUT AWESOME. THANK YOU.
WE WANT TO TAKE A PICTURE WITH YOU ALL IF THAT'S OKAY.
YOU CAN BRING YOUR WHOLE TEAM FORWARD AND WE'LL GET A COUPLE OF PICTURES.
[BACKGROUND] [NOISE] [APPLAUSE]
[00:25:05]
BOARD IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE THIS TIME DELIVERY.>> I WILL, AGAIN JUST LIKE TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO YOUR ENTIRE TEAM.
THERE IS A MOVIE THAT HAS A QUOTE THAT HAS BECOME PIVOTAL IN MY LIFE.
IT'S THE MOVIE, REMEMBER THE TITANS.
BUT THERE IS A LINE IN THAT MOVIE THAT SAYS ATTITUDES REFLECT LEADERSHIP AND SO MS. GREEN, I WANT TO SAY TO YOU, KUDOS, AS MUCH AS YOU CELEBRATE YOUR TEAM AND YOU, OF COURSE, HONOR THEIR SACRIFICES AS WELL.
I BELIEVE FIRMLY THAT THE ATMOSPHERE IN THE ENVIRONMENT ON YOUR CAMPUS IS A RESULT OF GREAT LEADERSHIP.
IN ADDITION TO WHAT CELEBRATING OUR NEW TEACHERS AND YOUR ENTIRE STAFF, WE ALSO WANT TO GIVE YOU KUDOS AS WELL, BUT FOR THE CULTURE THAT YOU'VE CREATED THERE SO THANK YOU SO MUCH [APPLAUSE]
JUST ONE THING, I WANT TO BOTTLE WHATEVER IT IS YOU'RE DOING AND SHARED ACROSS THE DISTRICT BECAUSE OBVIOUSLY, WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING IS WORKING AND KEEP DOING IT.
WE ARE SO VERY PROUD OF YOU [APPLAUSE]
>> I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY REALLY ECHOING BOTH DAVIS' JUST A TREMENDOUS JOB, WELL DONE AND JUST TO HEAR THE COMMENTS FROM THE TEACHER.
THERE'S SO MANY WORDS THAT WAS JUST RINGING IN ME, A BEAUTIFUL RAIN.
THINK ABOUT THE SEASON THAT WE'RE IN.
IT WAS THAT RING, JOYFUL AND JUST ALL OF THOSE WONDERFUL THINGS AND I JUST FELT IT.
TO BOTH OF THEIR POINTS, YOU'RE LEADING BY EXAMPLE, IT'S SUCH A GREAT REPRESENTATION OF OUR DISTRICT AND THE BENEFIT FOR THOSE CHILDREN WHO GET ALL OF THIS IS JUST REMARKABLE.
YES, WE SEE AN A CONTINUING IN THE FUTURE, SO KEEP IT GOING.
>> ANYTHING ELSE DR. MCFARLAND?
>> JUST BRIEFLY, I ALSO WANT TO RECOGNIZE THE CENTRAL OFFICE LEADERS THAT I'VE WORKED WITH ALL OF OUR ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES.
IF YOU ARE A LOT OF CNI OR PART OF LEADERSHIP OR EVEN STUDENT SERVICES AND YOU WORK WITH ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES WOULD YOU PLEASE STAND? [APPLAUSE] SUPPORTING THIS CAMPUS IS ON THE OUTSTANDING JOB AND THE SKY IS THE LIMIT.
>> THANK YOU. AT THIS TIME, WE'RE GOING TO MOVE TO THE CISD STUDENT'S SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE PROGRAM PILOT.
THIS IS OUR SECOND TIME HAVING OUR STUDENT'S SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEES PRESENT WITH US.

AT THIS TIME, WE ARE GOING TO MOVE TO AGENDA ITEM 6.2 THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES HERO AWARD. AFTER MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE MS. MISTS VANKEVIN PRESENT THIS NEXT ITEM.
DR. MCFARLAND, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
IS AN HONOR TO BE BEFORE YOU TONIGHT.
I WANT TO JUST TELL YOU A LITTLE STORY BEHIND THIS AWARD FIRST.
GO AHEAD AND START CALLING THOSE THAT ARE PART OF THIS.
ON NOVEMBER 29TH DURING THE JV BOYS' BASKETBALL GAME, HAMMADI LON COLLAPSED WHILE COMING OFF THE COURT.
HE WAS UNRESPONSIVE AND NOT BREATHING.
EMS WAS CALLED, CPR INITIATED.
THE AV WAS RETRIEVED AND APPLIED FOR THE STUDENT.
A SHOCK WAS DELIVERED AND CPR, COMPRESSIONS, AND RESCUE BREATHS WE'RE RE-INITIATED.
OUR ATHLETE BECAME RESPONSIVE AND HE WAS ABLE TO BREATHE ON HIS OWN.
EMS ARRIVED AND OUR STUDENT WAS TRANSPORTED TO [NOISE] MEDICAL CENTRE AND WAS ADMITTED TO THE CARDIOVASCULAR UNIT [NOISE].
LATER THAT WEEK, HE RECEIVED CARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY.
DUE TO THE SWIFT ACTION OF OUR STAFF AT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL , HAMMADI LON [APPLAUSE] , HERE'S HIS MOM TOO.
[00:35:02]
HAMMADI IS ALIVE AND HE'S WITH US TONIGHT AND HE WILL BE ENJOYING THE HOLIDAYS WITH HIS FAMILY AND HIS FRIENDS.WE'RE JUST SO HONORED TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THOSE SERVICES AND TONIGHT WE HAVE MS. TATUM JONES, ATHLETIC TRAINER, MS. BRISTOL THOMAS.
WHERE'S MS. BRISTOL THOMAS? AND COACH TONY BONDS, WHO ALL ATTENDED TO HAMMADI DURING HIS TIME OF NEED.
WE'RE SO GRATEFUL THAT THEY WERE PREPARED, THEY JUST KNEW WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO SAVE A LIFE [APPLAUSE].
WE ALSO HAVE A SPECIAL GUEST THAT I WOULD BE REMISSIVE IF I DIDN'T MENTION THAT.
WE'RE A PART OF A PROJECT THAT WE PREPARE FOR THIS.
IT WAS NO ACCIDENT THAT WE KNEW EXACTLY WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU WENT DOWN.
BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT WE PREPARE FOR.
I JUST WANT TO INVITE SARAH SHEROFF TO JUST SAY A FEW WORDS ON BEHALF OF PROJECT ADAM FOR CHILDREN AT THIS MOMENT.
>> IT IS SUCH AN INCREDIBLE HONOR TO BE UP HERE TODAY AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR INVITING ME TO BE OUT HERE.
THIS IS WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO, WHY WE HAVE PROJECT ADAM FOR CHILDRENS.
I'M GOING TO TRY NOT TO GET EMOTIONAL, JUST SAYING A FEW WORDS THAT I AM SO INCREDIBLY PROUD OF MOM, OF YOU, OF THE LIFE-SAVING HEROIC EFFORTS OF ALL OF THE STAFF INVOLVED WITH US.
THIS STORY COULD HAVE ENDED DIFFERENTLY.
PROJECT ADAM STARTED BECAUSE OF A 17-YEAR-OLD THAT COLLAPSED SUDDENLY ON A BASKETBALL COURT IN WISCONSIN 1999.
HE DID NOT HAVE ANY SIGNS, ANY SYMPTOMS WHEN HE COLLAPSED SUDDENLY.
THEY DID NOT HAVE EMERGENCY TEAM.
THE STORY COULD HAVE ENDED THERE.
WHEN ADAM PASSED AWAY, HIS PARENTS WENT TO CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL, WISCONSIN AND THEY SAID, WE DON'T WANT OUR SON'S LIFE TO END AT THE FUNERAL. WE WANT TO GO ON.
WE WANT TO HELP OTHER PARENTS.
WE WANT TO HELP THEIR FAMILIES.
WE WANT TO ENSURE THAT OTHER LIVES ARE SAVED AND THAT FOLKS ARE PREPARED.
THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL DID.
THEY WERE PREPARED AND THEY DIDN'T EVEN THINK TWICE WHEN THEY SPRING INTO ACTION THAT DAY.
I AM SO INCREDIBLY PROUD OF YOU.
CROWLEY BECAME A HEART SAFE SCHOOL DISTRICT IN OUR PROJECT ADAM PROGRAM JUST LAST YEAR.
YOU GUYS ARE ONE OF ONLY 21 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS, AND 578 HEART SAFE SCHOOLS THAT ARE PART OF OUR PROGRAM.
YOU GUYS DID WHAT WAS NEEDED TO DO.
YOU WERE PROACTIVE AND YOU SAVED A LIFE.
I'M SO INCREDIBLY PROUD AND HONORED TO BE HERE TODAY TO HONOR YOU.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. THIS IS A SMALL TOKEN OF OUR APPRECIATION AND MY HONOR, TO PRESENT THESE CERTIFICATES OF HEROISM TO THE STAFF INVOLVED.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE].
>> I WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT THE FIRST AWARDS AND TATUM JONES [APPLAUSE] COACH TONY BONDS. [APPLAUSE] WE GOT COACH BRISTOL THOMAS [APPLAUSE] EACH OF THESE, THEY SPRANG INTO ACTION.
BRISTOL THOMAS WAS THROUGH THE AD.
THEY WERE DOING COMPRESSIONS AND THEY KNEW WHAT TO DO.
>> GOOD EVENING BOARD PRESIDENT DR. MCFARLAND AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
AS YOU HEARD FROM THE REPRESENTATIVE, THIS LIFESAVING TREATMENT WAS JUST BROUGHT INTO THE DISTRICT LAST YEAR.
WE WOULD BE REMISS IF WE DID NOT TAKE A MOMENT TO THANK NURSE MISS THE VAN CAMP AND WHO IS OUR DIRECTOR OF BOARD SERVICES.
[00:40:11]
HEALTH CARE INITIATIVES IN THE DISTRICT THAT ARE INNOVATIVE.SHE'S NOT JUST FOLLOWING THE PATH, SHE'S JUST LIKE DOCTOR MCFARLAND AND SO MANY OTHER LEADERS ABOUT THE INNOVATION AND THE HARD WORK THAT'S INVOLVED.
I UNDERSTAND KELVIN, YOU ALSO ARE A HERO TONIGHT.
>> HELLO. [INAUDIBLE] WE JUST MOVED HERE SIX MONTHS AGO.
[INAUDIBLE] I THINK I HAVE [INAUDIBLE] VERY GRATEFUL.
[APPLAUSE] [BACKGROUND] BOARD WHAT THEY'RE DOING, THEY'RE TAKING PICTURES.
ARE THERE ANY COMMENTS THAT YOU'D LIKE TO SHARE AT THIS TIME AND THE WIDELY TIERS?
>> I WOULD JUST LIKE TO SAY TO THE FAMILY, WE GREATLY APPRECIATE YOU FOR CHOOSING CROWLEY ISD.
THIS IS A TESTAMENT OF WHAT THE DISTRICT CAN DO IN SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS.
WE HEAR ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT RECOGNITIONS AND ALL THIS AND THIS IS ANOTHER AVENUE OF STEPPING IN AND ACTUALLY SAVING A LIFE.
I'M OVERJOYED, I'M FULL OF EMOTION BECAUSE I'M A MOM.
I CAN SAY THIS, MS. VAN CANTMAN, SHE IS A GOD-SENT TO THIS DISTRICT.
PERSONALLY, I CAN ATTEST TO THAT.
SHE KNOWS AND I APPRECIATE HER.
WHAT YOU'VE GOT, I'M GLAD YOU WERE ABLE TO RECEIVE WHAT WE HAVE AND YOUNG MEN, I JUST APPLAUD YOU.
BEING AN EXAMPLE FOR OTHER STUDENTS AND SAY ANYONE WHO HASN'T LEARNED HOW TO DO ANY OF THAT, RAISE YOUR HAND AND STAND UP, I SEE ONE BACK THERE.
[LAUGHTER] I WANT TO FIND OUT [OVERLAPPING] BUT WE THANK YOU AND WE LOVE YOU.
THIS IS AGAIN, PART OF BEING A FAMILY AND THAT'S WHAT FAMILIES DO.
AGAIN, BOARD MEMBERS, IF YOU HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO ADD, BUT THANK YOU FOR THIS MOMENT TO LET US RECOGNIZE YOU AND THANK THOSE WHO STEPPED IN.
MS. JONES COACHED ON, AND COACH THOMAS, THANK YOU AS WELL. VERY GOOD.
[00:45:57]

WITH THE PAST ANNOUNCEMENTS NOW REVIEWED AND OUR FUTURE ENDEAVORS TO LOOK FOR, I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE A ROUND OF APPLAUSE TO THE WONDERFUL STUDENTS.
BUT I WOULD BE REMISS AND NOT THINKING THOSE WONDERFUL BAND DIRECTORS AT THE MIGHTY PANTHER BAND, MR. SAMPLE, MS. SEWELL, AND MS. RICOTTA.
THANK YOU GUYS FOR EVERYTHING YOU'RE DOING FOR THE DISTRICT. [APPLAUSE] THANKS.
CIRCLE AROUND YOU, PLEASE STAND IN FRONT SO WE CAN GET A PHOTO OP WITH YOU, AND ALSO OUR TRUSTEES AND SUPERINTENDENT.
[00:50:43]
>> OR DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR ANYTHING? I KNOW MS. DAVIS, YOU MENTIONED BANDS A LOT WHEN WE SEE THE BANDS.
I DIDN'T KNOW IF YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR MORE.
>> WELL, I JUST WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO THE BAND.
I AM LIVING VICARIOUSLY THROUGH THEM.
[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE WHEN I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I WAS IN A BAND AND I'M JUST VERY FUN BAND PERFORMANCES, EVERYTHING ABOUT BANDS.
I'M GETTING A SECOND CHANCE AND LIVING VICARIOUSLY THROUGH YOU, SO THANK YOU.
YOU REPRESENT CROWLEY AGAIN, YOU REPRESENT US VERY WELL.
I'VE NEVER BEEN IN BAND, BUT I'VE ALWAYS BEEN FASCINATED BY THE CHOREOGRAPHY, THE FORMATION, JUST THE UNIFORM.
JUST A FABULOUS JOB EVERY SINGLE TIME.
CONGRATULATIONS, MUCH SUCCESS TO YOU AS YOU CONTINUE WITH YOUR BAND JOURNEY.
I KNOW SOME OF YOU ARE SENIORS AND YOU'RE MOVING ON.
BUT THE MUSIC WILL LIVE ON FOREVER IN YOU I'M SURE.
SO AND FOR THOSE THAT ARE RETURNING, WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, SO THANK YOU.
LET'S GIVE THEM ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE.
[APPLAUSE] WE'RE AT AGENDA ITEM 6.4.
THE NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM RECOGNITION, DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE'RE DEFINITELY EXCITED TO RECOGNIZE THIS NEXT GROUP.
WE HAVE MR. MOFFETT HERE TO PRESENT THIS ITEM. COME ON.
>> GOOD EVENING MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, [INAUDIBLE].
IT IS WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT THAT I BRING BEFORE YOU A FEW OF THE STUDENT ATHLETES AND HEAD COACH OF NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL TO RECOGNIZE THIS EVENING.
THIS RECOGNITION WILL BE IN LINE WITH GOAL ONE, THRIVING STUDENTS.
THIS TEAM OF STUDENT ATHLETES HAD A RECORD OF 12 AND 1 OVERALL, ONE LOSS.
AN OUTRIGHT DISTRICT 36A CHAMPIONSHIP AND AS THEY WERE ALSO A REGIONAL SEMIFINALS.
NORTH CROWLEY HAD 13 FIRST TEAM ALL DISTRICT SELECTION, AND THIS COACHING STAFF WAS SELECTED AS THE DISTRICT 36A COACHING STAFF OF THE YEAR.
CURRENTLY, NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL HAS 13 SENIORS WHO HAVE RECEIVED OFFERS TO FURTHER THEIR EDUCATION AND PLAYING CAREER AT THE COLLEGIATE LEVEL.
[APPLAUSE] THESE ARE JUST A FEW OF THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND MILESTONES REACHED BY THIS GREAT TEAM OF COACHES AND STUDENT ATHLETES THIS YEAR.
I WOULD LIKE TO INVITE COACH RAY GATES TO THE PODIUM TO SHARE ANY COMMENTS AS WELL.
LET'S GIVE HIM A ROUND. [APPLAUSE]
>> SEEMS LIKE YESTERDAY, I REMEMBER COMING ON CROWLEY.
IT'S AMAZING, GOD MOVES AND WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS.
MY PATH HERE IN MY OWN MIND IS SOMEWHAT AN UNCONVENTIONAL ONE, I GUESS, BECAUSE WHENEVER I STARTED APPLYING FOR THESE JOBS AND GOT PHONE CALLS, I WAS OFFERED A JOB SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I THOUGHT THAT THAT'S WHERE I WAS GOING.
IN A LOT OF TIMES IN LIFE WE MAKE OUR OWN PLANS, WE PLOT OUR OWN PLOTS AND WE THINK WE KNOW WHAT WE'RE DOING, BUT GOD, HE CLOSED THE DOOR AND HE OPENED ONE AND IT'S DEFINITELY THE RIGHT ONE FOR ME.
I WANT TO SAY FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU TO DR. MCFARLAND.
THANK YOU TO THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
THANK YOU TO OUR ADMINISTRATION AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL.
THANK YOU TO OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR PARENTS.
IT WAS AN AMAZING FIRST YEAR FOR ME AT THE HELM OF THIS PROGRAM.
[00:55:02]
I'M EXCITED ABOUT WHAT WE'RE GOING TO DO GOING FORWARD.TONIGHT WITH ME I HAVE S'MAJE BURRELL.
S'MAJE IS CURRENTLY COMMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS, HE WILL BE GOING DOWN TOMORROW ON A FINAL OFFICIAL VISIT WEEKEND. IS THAT CORRECT? [APPLAUSE] THEN WITH US, WE HAVE ONE OF OUR RETURNS.
HE'S A JUNIOR RIGHT NOW, STERLIN BROOKS. HE'LL BE BACK.
HE IS A VITAL MOBILE PIECE AND PART OF WHAT WE'RE DOING MOVING FORWARD.
JUST A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT WE DID THIS YEAR.
DR. MCFARLAND HAD ALREADY SPOKEN TO SOME OF THOSE THINGS.
BUT DEFENSIVELY, I'LL START WITH A DIFFERENT SIGN.
FOR A VAST MAJORITY OF THE YEAR WE WERE ONE OF THE TOP DEFENSES IN THE METROPLEX AREA.
WE WERE, I THINK NUMBER TWO OVERALL IN DEFENSE, WHICH IS PRETTY PHENOMENAL CONSIDERING THE AMOUNT OF TIME THAT WE'VE HAD WITH OUR GUYS.
OFFENSIVELY. GOSH, MY OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR, HE SEARCHED ALL OF OUR HISTORY BEFORE AS WHAT'S BEEN DONE IN THE PAST.
I WANT TO JOT SOME OF THOSE THINGS THAT WE DID IN OUR FIRST YEAR HERE.
WE SCORED THE MOST POINTS EVER IN SCHOOL HISTORY WITH 526 POINTS ON THE YEAR.
WE AVERAGED 40.4 POINTS PER GAME.
WE HAD THE MOST PASSING YARDS IN A SINGLE SEASON, 2,301.
WE HAD THE MOST RUSHING YARDS IN A SINGLE SEASON.
WE HAD THE MOST WHOLE YARDS IN THIS SEASON, 5,957.
MOST RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS WITH 45.
WE HAD THE MOST PASSIVE TOUCHDOWNS, 28.
INDIVIDUALLY, CHRIS JIMERSON, HE HAD THE MOST PASSING YARDS OF ANY ONE EVER AT NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND HE THREW FORWARD 2,217 MOST RECEIVING TOUCHDOWNS.
KA'MORREUN PIMPTON, WHO ALSO WAS AT LSU LAST WEEK AND HE'LL BE MOVING TO UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS TOMORROW ON AN OFFICIAL VISIT.
BUT HE HAD 17 TOUCHDOWNS AND HE IS CURRENTLY COMMITTED TO VANDERBILT.
MOST RECEPTIONS BY KA'MORREUN, 57.
DEJUAN LACEY WHO'S A SENIOR HAD 1,707 YARDS RUSHING.
THEN WE HAVE A SOPHOMORE WHO DECIDED TO HAVE [INAUDIBLE], BUT HE HAD THE MOST RUSHING TOUCHDOWNS IN THE SCHOOL HISTORY AT 21.
THOSE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE DID OFFENSIVELY.
AGAIN, I'M SUPER PROUD OF THEM.
[APPLAUSE] WHEN YOU GET INTO THIS PROFESSION, MY MOTHER, SHE'S A PASTOR AND ALL MY LIFE SHE'S TOLD ME THAT I WAS GOING TO BE A PASTOR.
EVERY TIME WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TALK WHEN SHE COMES FOR HOLIDAYS, SHE REMINDS ME OF THAT AND I HAD TO TELL HER THAT I HAVE MY MINISTRY BUSINESS {LAUGHTER].
WITH THAT BEING SAID, ON JANUARY 25TH, WE'RE GOING TO HOST AT OUR HIGH SCHOOL UNSIGNED SHOWCASE OR COMBINE FOR ANY KID WHO DOESN'T HAVE AN OFFER IN THE DALLAS METROPLEX AREA.
RIGHT NOW WE HAVE 76 KIDS THAT ARE SIGNED UP AND I THINK WE HAVE 18 UNIVERSITIES THAT WILL BE THERE TO SCOUT THOSE KIDS AND POSSIBLY GIVE THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO FURTHER THEIR PLAYING CAREER AND THEIR EDUCATION.
WE'RE DOING THAT ALL FOR FREE.
WE'RE NOT CHARGING THOSE KIDS A THING.
WE JUST WANT TO HELP KIDS FURTHER THEIR PLAYING CAREER.
THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING CURRENTLY.
THEN THE LAST THING, WE JUST FINISHED OUR FALL SERVICE COMMUNITY PROJECT.
SHE'S A GO GETTER. SHE WORKS FOR AND HAVE IT ON BOTH.
SHE [NOISE] WAS ABLE TO SECURE US A $1,500 COMMUNITY SERVICE GRANT IN WHICH WE WERE ABLE TO PUT TOGETHER BLESSING BAGS FOR THE HOMELESS.
WE PARTNERED WITH FORT WORTH ISD, OUR FOOTBALL PLAYERS.
WE PUT ALL THOSE TOGETHER THIS PAST MONDAY.
THEN ON TUESDAY, OUR FORT WORTH POLICE DEPARTMENT CAME TO OUR SCHOOL AND WE WERE ABLE TO GIVE THEM OVER 120 BLESSING BAGS TO GIVE TO THE HOMELESS AS A [INAUDIBLE] THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY.
IT'S MUCH MORE THAN FOOTBALL ON OUR PROGRAM.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR KIDS WHEN THEY LEAVE OUR PROGRAM, ARE MORE WELL-ROUNDED AND THEY'RE READY FOR WHAT THE WORLD HAS FOR THEMSELVES.
AGAIN, I'M FORTUNATE, I'M BLESSED TO BE HERE AND I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU GUYS AGAIN FOR EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO FOR US.
[01:00:22]
BOARD, ARE THERE ANY COMMENTS?
FIRST I WANT TO SAY, COACH, WHAT YOU HAVE DONE IS NOTHING SHORT OF PHENOMENAL AND AMAZING, AND MINISTRY IS ABOUT SACRIFICE AND IT'S ABOUT SERVING, AND YOU HAVE DEMONSTRATED THAT.
SO I JUST WANT TO SAY TO YOU, MAN TO MAN THAT I APPRECIATE THE SACRIFICES THAT YOU'VE MADE FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR STUDENTS.
YOU HAVE SERVED AS A GREAT EXAMPLE OF WHAT BEING A MAN IS AND WHAT BEING PURPOSE-DRIVEN IS AND SO AGAIN, I WANT TO SAY TO YOU, THANK YOU BUT I ALSO WANT TO SAY TO BOTH OF THESE ATHLETES, WHAT YOU ALL HAVE DONE WEEK AFTER WEEK IS FAR MORE THAN JUST PLAYING THE GAME.
IN THIS DAY AND TIME THERE ARE THOSE WHO WILL TELL ATHLETES TO SHUT UP AND DRIBBLE OR TO FOCUS SOLELY ON THE GAME.
BUT I WANT TO SAY TO BOTH OF YOU, THAT YOU ALL HAVE DEMONSTRATED LEADERSHIP IN WHAT YOU HAVE DONE.
EVERY FRIDAY, THERE'S A LITTLE EIGHT-YEAR-OLD BOY THAT YOU ALL WILL PROBABLY NEVER KNOW WHO GAVIN DAVIS IS.
[LAUGHTER] BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT HE PRIDES HIMSELF ON EVERY SINGLE WEEK IS BEING ABLE TO SEE THE NORTH CROWLEY PANTHERS PLAY.
MY SON IS MESMERIZED BY YOU ALL AND TO HIM, YOU ALL ARE GIANTS.
SO JUST THE OPPORTUNITY OF THE FEW TIMES THAT HE'S HAD TO BE ON THE SIDELINE WITH ME, THE HIGHLIGHT OF HIS WEEK HAS BEEN BEING ABLE TO GIVE HIGH FIVES AND FOR YOU ALL TO JUST ACKNOWLEDGE HIS PRESENCE AND SO I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE, YOUNG BOYS AND YOUNG GIRLS WHOM YOU MAY NEVER RECOGNIZE, YOU MAY NEVER KNOW WHO THEY ARE, BUT THEY'RE WATCHING YOU AND SO NEVER TAKE THE MOMENT AND THE OPPORTUNITY THAT YOU HAVE, EVEN IN PLAYING THE GAME TO UNDERSTAND YOU ARE MAKING AN IMPACT ON SOMEBODY'S LIFE.
THANK YOU ALL FOR DOING WHAT IT IS THAT YOU HAVE DONE THIS SEASON AND JOB WELL DONE.
>> I HAVE SOMETHING I WOULD LIKE TO SAY.
FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU DR. MCFARLAND AND STAFF FOR RECOGNIZING THE TALENT THAT IS MR. GATES AND BRINGING HIM HERE TO CROWLEY.
BEING A SUPERSTAR, AND I'M GOING TO SAY A LOT OF THE PLAYERS ON THE TEAM ARE SUPERSTARS AND SO ARE YOU, MR. GATES.
BUT THE SUPERSTARS AND THEIR ABILITY TO DO WHAT THEY DO DOES NOT HAPPEN IN A VACUUM AND FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND, THE THINGS YOU'RE DOING WITH THESE YOUNG MEN, IN ADDITION TO TEACHING THEM THE SKILLS FOR FOOTBALL IS, I THINK, THE ADDED MOTIVATION THEY NEED TO GO OUT AND SUCCEED ON THE FIELD LIKE THEY DO.
YOU ARE DRESSING THE WHOLE CHILD, AND THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO WHAT IT IS THEY'RE TRYING TO DO AND THEY NEED TO DO.
SO TO YOU, MR. GATES, I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR HAVING THAT INSIGHT AND THE DESIRE TO DO THAT FOR OUR STUDENTS.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, I JUST HAVE ONE PROBLEM WITH COACH GATES, [LAUGHTER] I HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY OF THAT BARBECUE YET.
I'VE BEEN HEARING ABOUT IT. [LAUGHTER]
>> I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT SO NOW YOU HAVE TO EXPLAIN.
>> THAT'S AN INSIDE JOKE BUT I THINK WE ALL NEED SOME OF COACH GATES' BARBECUE.
I JUST HEAR ABOUT IT BUT I HAVE NEVER TASTED IT. [LAUGHTER].
>> WHY ARE YOU LOOKING AROUND?
>> I'VE BEEN UP SINCE 12 O'CLOCK LAST NIGHT, I COOKED FOR THE ENTIRE STAFF TODAY AT NORTH CROWLEY SO I'M LOW ON THOSE.
>> I DIDN'T GET INVITED BUT WE STILL GOT TIME.
THERE IS STILL TIME. [LAUGHTER]
>> HE'S LOOKING FOR THAT BACKUP, NOBODY IS SPEAKING TO HELP HIM OUT. [LAUGHTER]
>> THANK YOU, COACH GATES, MAN, FOR ALL YOU'VE DONE.
>> THANK YOU [INAUDIBLE] ALSO FOR BEING AN OUTSTANDING LEADER AS WELL. THANK BOTH OF YOU-ALL.
>> THANK YOU, MR. MOFFETT ALSO FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP IN THE WHOLE ATHLETIC PROGRAM, YES.
[01:05:04]
>> WE ALSO HAVE A PARENT HERE.
[APPLAUSE] OUR PARENTS AND OUR BOOSTERS ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR PROGRAM AND THEY DO A LOT OF WORK SO WE THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AT THIS TIME, WE WILL HAVE AGENDA ITEM 6.5.
THE HEARTBEATS TEAM AWARD WINNER, DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, WE HAVE OUR HEARTBEATS TEAM AWARD WINNER.
WE HAVE MS. MOYES DUYLS PREPARED TO PRESENT THE AWARD.
DR. MAYFIELD, TRUSTEES, EVERY MONTH, WE HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO RECOGNIZE ONE STAFF MEMBER OUT OF THOUSANDS WHO REPRESENTS THE HEARTBEAT OF OUR DISTRICT AND TONIGHT WE ARE EXCITED TO BRING OUR HEARTBEATS TEAM AWARD WINNER TO YOU.
HE'S HERE IN THE BUILDING. LET'S TAKE A LOOK.
>> SURPRISE. [APPLAUSE] MR. PARKER.
[APPLAUSE] BRADLEY PARKER IS THE HEARTBEAT AWARD WINNER FOR ALL OF CROWLEY ISD FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER.
[APPLAUSE] MR. PARKER, IS THE EPITOME OF SERVICES SUPPORT, RIGHT?
>> HE AND HIS TEAM HELP RUN ALL THINGS DIGITAL IN CROWLEY ISD AND I THINK I'VE HEARD THERE ARE MORE THAN 660 DIFFERENT DIGITAL PLATFORMS THAT HE AND HIS TEAM HELP LEAD FOR STUDENTS HERE IN THIS ROOM BUT ACROSS CROWLEY ISD.
RAISE YOUR HAND IF WHEN YOU TOOK THE STAR TEST LAST YEAR YOU DID IT ON YOUR CHROME BOOK? YOU KNOW WHO HELPED MAKE THAT HAPPEN? MR. PARKER AND HIS TEAM.
SO ALL THOSE DIGITAL THINGS, THEY ARE BEHIND THE SCENES WORKING ON THOSE TO SERVE STUDENTS ACROSS CROWLEY ISD AND HE ALWAYS DOES IT WITH SERVICE AT HEART AND THAT IS WHY HE IS OUR HEARTBEAT AWARD WINNER THIS MONTH.
>> BRADLEY PARKER IS THE HEARTBEAT OF CROWLEY ISD AND FOR AS LONG AS I'VE KNOWN HIM, HE'S ALWAYS WORKED THAT WAY AND THE BEST.
>> BRADLEY PARKER IS OUR DISTRICT MR. FIX IT.
IF THERE IS A PROBLEM, I GUARANTEE YOU MOST PEOPLE WILL BE LIKE, "JUST CALL BRADLEY PARKER.
I HAVE A ZOOM LINK, I CAN CALL HIM." BECAUSE HE'S THAT MUCH OF A LEADER THAT PEOPLE KNOW THEY CAN COME TO HIM, THE FACT THAT HE WILL STOP FOR ANYONE NO MATTER THEIR POSITION, EVEN IF IT'S A BUSY DAY, EVEN IF THEY'RE TESTING, EVEN IF THERE IS A MILLION THINGS ON HIS PLATE, HE'S GOING TO STOP AND MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE YOU'RE THE ONLY PERSON THAT MATTERS IN THAT MOMENT.
>> HOW'S IT GOING THERE? ARE THEY ALL COMPLEX?
>> I'VE KNOWN MR. PARKER FOR 12 YEARS NOW.
WHEN WE FIRST STARTED OFF IN THE DISTRICT, HE WAS MY ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT [INAUDIBLE] SECONDARY SCHOOL AND SO WE HAD A LOT OF TIME TO GROW OUR RELATIONSHIP.
I THINK HE'S REALLY ALLOWED ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD MY CAPACITY AND EXPAND MY LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND MY CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS.
>> I'M LOGGING IN AS A STUDENT AND YOU'RE GOING TO ASSIGN THE TEST?
>> WE'VE GROWN FROM FOUR DIGITAL TOOLS TO 16 PLUS DIGITAL TOOLS JUST OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS AND PARKER AND HIS TEAM ARE THE ONES THAT HOLD THAT ALL TOGETHER.
THEY ARE THIS GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT YOU'LL NEVER KNOW THEY EXIST UNLESS SOMETHING GOES WRONG AND THAT'S PARKER AND HIS TEAM.
HIS GOAL IS TO MAKE SURE THAT EVERYTHING RUNS SMOOTHLY FOR TEACHERS, FOR STUDENTS.
THEN IF IT DOESN'T, YOU CAN GUARANTEE THAT HE WILL BE THERE BEFORE YOU EVEN HAVE TO ASK.
>> THE MINUTE THEY LAUNCH THE TEST IS WHEN THIS POPS UP.
I THINK OUR BIGGEST IMPACT IS MAKING SURE PEOPLE HAVE WHAT THEY NEED, WHEN THEY NEED IT AND IF THEY DON'T HAVE THAT, GET TO THEM QUICKLY.
THERE'S NOTHING I DO THAT DOESN'T GET DONE BETTER BECAUSE THERE'S A TEAM.
WE'RE VERY RESPONSIVE AND WE'RE VERY HELPFUL AND WE'RE VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE.
THE THINGS THAT I GET CREDIT FOR ARE REALLY THE WORK OF SEVERAL PEOPLE.
>> IF YOU DON'T HAVE PARKER AND HIS TEAM DOING WHAT THEY DO DAY IN DAY OUT, BOOTS ON THE GROUND, IN THE TRENCHES, WE MAY JUST HAVE A VERY DIFFERENT-LOOKING DISTRICT BECAUSE OF THE LEVEL OF SUPPORT THAT THEY PROVIDE.
>> WHILE THE RESPONSIBILITY IN THE JOB DESCRIPTION SPECIFICALLY TO INSTRUCTION TO TECHNOLOGY, I THINK TO DO THAT, THE BIGGER PICTURE IS TO TAKE CARE OF THE PEOPLE.
[01:10:01]
>> PARKER IS JUST A GOOD HUMAN.
WHEN YOU THINK OF, WHO DO YOU WANT YOUR KIDS TO BE LIKE OR WHO DO YOU WANT YOUR TEAM TO BE LIKE, WHO DO YOU WANT THEM TO EMULATE? PARKER IS WHAT COMES TO MIND BECAUSE HE SERVES SELFLESSLY.
EGO HAS NO PART IN THIS FOR HIM AND IT IS ALL ABOUT MAKING SURE THAT CAMPUSES AND PEOPLE ON THE CAMPUSES, THEY'RE SERVED AND THEY'RE SUPPORTED, AND THEY HAVE WHAT THEY NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL.
>> I'VE BEEN IN CROWLEY ISD FOR 21 YEARS IN VARIOUS CAPACITIES FROM A FINANCE TEACHER TO AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL, TO WORKING IN THE TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT AND THE CURRICULUM DEPARTMENT.
IT'S JUST A PLACE WHERE IT FEELS LIKE I SHOULD BE.
>> MR. PARKER IS JOINED TONIGHT BY HIS WIFE LORINE AND [INAUDIBLE]
>> I WANT TO THANK MY WIFE FOR BEING HERE EVERY DAY WITH ME.
IT'S PRETTY IMPORTANT THAT I ACKNOWLEDGE HER.
THE HEARTBEATS TEAM AWARD IS SOMETHING THAT I NEVER EXPECT.
I'M PART OF TWO AMAZING THINGS AND ALL CREDIT GOES TO THEM.
I HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY AND THE PRIVILEGE TO WORK.
I DON'T WANT TO SAY MUCH MORE BEYOND THAT OTHER THAN I'M VERY FORTUNATE TO BE ABLE TO WORK IN AN ENVIRONMENT IN CROWLEY ISD WHERE I GET TO SERVE PEOPLE AND PROVIDE FOR THEIR NEEDS.
THAT'S ALL YOU CAN REALLY ASK FOR.
I LOVE WORKING WITH MY TEAM AND SOME OF WHICH ARE IN THE BACKUP THERE JUST PART OF THEM, DONOGHUE AND DR. ANDERSON.
I'M VERY FORTUNATE I ACQUIRED SOME AMAZING TEAMS AND I WISH I COULD SAY MORE THAN THAT.
BUT IT'S BEEN A LONG ROAD AND TO WORK WITH THE PEOPLE THAT I DO IS MY ROLE.
I'M VERY HONORED TO BE IN THE POSITION THAT I AM TO MAKE THE IMPACT AND SUPPORT THAT THE PEOPLE, I'M SORRY I'M NOT ALWAYS GREAT AT THIS.
I WOULD MUCH RATHER BE BEHIND THE SCENES MAKING THIS HAPPEN.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THAT YOU DO FOR CROWLEY.
YOUR ROLE IS SO FAR FROM WHAT I ENJOY DOING, WORKING WITH COMPUTERS AND DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY.
I KNOW THE WORK IS HARD AND THANK YOU FOR RECOGNIZING YOUR TEAM AND YOUR WIFE.
IF YOU WILL STAND BECAUSE I KNOW HE RECOGNIZED YOU, BUT WE WANT TO HONOR YOU [APPLAUSE] AND THANK YOU FOR LETTING US HAVE HIM THROUGHOUT THE DAY AND I KNOW THERE ARE SOME WEEKENDS AND [INAUDIBLE] THAT YOU WORK AS WELL BUT THANK YOU SO MUCH AND WE APPRECIATE ALL [INAUDIBLE].
ANYTHING ELSE YOU WANT TO SHARE?
AS SOMEONE WHO'S ON CAMPUS AND ANOTHER DISTRICT, YOUR ROLE IS A GOD-SENT.
I LIKE MR. [INAUDIBLE] BEHIND THE CURTAINS [LAUGHTER] MAKING EVERYTHING HAPPEN.
I'M SURE 16,000 STUDENTS AND TEACHERS APPRECIATE YOU IN MAKING SURE THEIR CHROMEBOOKS ARE RUNNING, THE APPS ARE WORKING PROPERLY, ROBIN SYSTEM.
ALL OF THAT IS ESSENTIAL IN THE CLASSROOM.
IN LEARNING BECAUSE YOU GET ON YOUR [INAUDIBLE] THESE REBUTS ALEXIA WHEREVER WE USE, BUT IS AN ESSENTIAL COMPONENT OUTSIDE THE TEACHER, AND SO YOU'RE THE MAN BEHIND THE SCENE AND I KNOW YOUR TEAM MAKING THE MAGIC HAPPEN. WE APPRECIATE YOU.
[01:15:03]
[8.0 CISD Student School Board Trustee Program Pilot]
OUR CISD STUDENTS' SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE PROGRAM PILOT FOR REAL THIS TIME.AGENDA ITEM 8.1 DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS WOULD DEFINITELY EXCITED TO BRING FALL IN THIS NEXT ITEM AND THANK YOU BOARD FOR ALLOWING US THE OPPORTUNITY TO PILOT STUDENT BOARD THROUGH THE TRUSTEE PROGRAM, MR. RASHAD [INAUDIBLE] WAS PART OF THIS PROGRAM.
I'LL LET HIM COME UP AND HE'LL LEAD US IN THE CONVERSATION.
>> VERY GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT.
DR. MCFARLAND, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, I'M EXCITED TO INTRODUCE OUR TWO STUDENTS OR MEMBERS TONIGHT WE HAVE MS. SARAYA ABRAM AND WE HAVE MR. ANDREW [INAUDIBLE].
SARAYA IS A JUNIOR AT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND ANDREW IS A SENIOR AT NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL.
THEY'RE GOING TO BASICALLY JUST GO OVER REVIEW OF THE LAST BOARD MEETING AND JUST TALK ABOUT FEW OTHER THINGS THEY HAVE AS WELL.
SO WE GOING TO START WITH SARAYA TONIGHT.
>> IN THE PREVIOUS MEETING THAT I ATTENDED, WE HAD TO DISCUSS ONE THING THAT WE NEED TO WORK ON, AS WELL AS OUR PERSONAL SCHOOLS.
I BROUGHT UP THE MATTER OF LIKE RESTROOM TIME AND POLICY AND I'M REALLY GRATEFUL BECAUSE AFTER THIS IS A LITTLE UPDATE.
MY PRINCIPAL, MR. BROWN, I SEE HIM TODAY HE'S RIGHT OVER THERE.
HE ATTENDED ONE OF THE STUDENT COUNCIL MEETINGS AT MY SCHOOL, CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, AND ASKED ALL THE STUDENTS IN THE ROOM WHAT OUR OPINION WAS ON THIS MATTER.
HE ALSO TALKED ABOUT HIS REASONING, WHICH I FEEL IS A VERY, VERY GOOD STEP BECAUSE MOST OF THE TIME, POLICIES ARE JUST MADE NOT REALLY DISCUSSED.
SO KNOWING THE REASONING BEHIND THIS AND EVERYTHING MADE EVERYTHING SO MUCH CLEAR.
ALSO ASKING FOR FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS IS A REALLY GOOD THING AND I CONSIDER IT A REALLY GOOD MOVEMENT.
THANK YOU COULD I SEE YOU ON THAT? I WAS LOOKING AHEAD IN OUR ITEMS AND I SAW THE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM.
I JUST WANTED TO DISCUSS MY VIEWS REGARDING THAT TOPIC.
THROUGHOUT LIKE QUARANTINE AND THINGS, I EXPERIENCED FIRSTHAND FEELINGS OF DESPAIR AND I WOULD CALL THEM DEPRESSIVE, I GUESS.
A LOT OF STUDENTS THAT I TALKED TO WHEN WE CAME BACK TO SCHOOL ALSO EXPRESS THESE FEELINGS AND GAVE SIMILAR INPUTS TO HOW I JUST DID.
MENTAL HEALTH IS A FAIRLY NEW TOPIC IN THE MINDS OF TODAY, AS I KNOW IN THE PAST, IT WASN'T REALLY AN EXPLORED THING.
I THINK THE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM IS A REALLY GOOD MOVEMENT AND A REALLY GOOD STEP FORWARD IN ADDRESSING THESE PIVOTAL TOPICS WITHIN OUR SOCIETY TODAY.
>> AT MY PREVIOUS MEETING, I DISCUSSED HOW I WANTED THE CCA PROGRAM TO HAVE EASIER ACCESS TO SPORTS.
WHILE I DON'T HAVE AN UPDATE ON THAT CURRENTLY, I ALSO SAW THE MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM AND I AGREE THAT THE PANDEMIC AFFECTED A LOT OF PEOPLE AND THEY'RE A LOT MORE AFRAID OF SOCIETY NOW THAN THEY WERE ORIGINALLY.
I THINK THAT MENTAL HEALTH PROGRAM WILL HELP THEM OVERCOME THAT A LOT BETTER.
>> THAT'S BOTH OF WHAT YOU SAID ARE GOOD SEGUES TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM.
>> CAN WE ASK THEM A QUESTION?
>> FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU, MR. BROWN FOR ATTENDING THAT STUDENT COUNCIL MEETING AND LISTENING TO WHAT THE STUDENTS HAD TO SAY.
I WANT TO ASK BOTH OF YOU BECAUSE BOTH OF YOU MENTIONED THE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM.
IS IT SOMETHING YOU'RE GOING TO ATTEND AND ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS TO ATTEND IF YOU ARE ATTENDING?
>> YES, MA'AM. ACCORDING TO YOUR QUESTION ABOUT IF I PLAN TO INVITE MY FRIENDS,
[01:20:05]
I DEFINITELY WILL, BECAUSE AS I STATED, THAT'S A REALLY GOOD THING THAT EVERYBODY NEEDS TO BE AWARE OF AND REALLY DIG INTO.IF I AM ABLE TO, WHICH I GOT TO CHECK THE CALENDAR, THEN YES.
>> I WILL ABSOLUTELY BE ATTENDING AND TRYING TO DRAG A BUNCH OF MY FRIENDS TO GO AS WELL.
>> ARE YOU GOING TO ADVERTISE AT YOUR CAMPUS?
>> WE MAY HAVE A FEW MORE QUESTIONS.
AFTER YOU HEAR THE NEXT PRESENTATION, YOU MAY HAVE SOME QUESTIONS TO ASK AS WELL, SO WE WE'LL OPEN IT UP TO YOU TO ASK QUESTIONS AND THEN WE MAY HAVE A FEW MORE TO ASK.
[9.0 Report Item(s)]
THE CISD MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM AND RESOURCE FAIR. DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, I AM DEFINITELY EXCITED TO BRING FORWARD THIS NEXT ITEM.
THIS IS A MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM AND RESOURCE FAIR.
I JUST WANT TO BEFORE WE EVEN START, BY THANKING MS. TRINA HARRIS AND ALSO DR. HAMLET.
THEY HAVE DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB TO PULL THIS TOGETHER.
WE THINK IT'S GOING TO BE AN OUTSTANDING EVENT AND DEFINITELY APPRECIATE YOU ALL. MRS. HARRIS.
GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND DR. MCFARLAND.
CROWLEY ISD IS RESPONDING TO THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF OUR CISD COMMUNITY.
BY HOSTING MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS, WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER.
I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU THE DATE AND TIME A LITTLE BIT LATER, BUT I'D LIKE TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR WHY.
EMBEDDED IN OUR PURPOSE, YOU WILL SEE THE TARGET AUDIENCE MEMBERS.
NUMBER 1, THE MENTAL HEALTH OF CHILDREN IS CONNECTED TO THEIR PARENTS' MENTAL HEALTH.
IF OUR PARENTS ARE NOT WELL, THEN OUR STUDENTS CAN'T BE WELL BECAUSE WHEN THEY HAVE NEEDS, THEY ARE UNABLE TO ADDRESS THOSE NEEDS THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE, AS WELL AS TO BE GOOD PARENTS AND TO BEHOLD WHAT IS GOOD.
WE HAVE TO TAKE CARE OF OUR MENTAL HEALTH AS WELL.
SECONDLY, OUR AUDIENCE INCLUDES OUR STUDENTS BECAUSE AS OUR STUDENTS JUST ADVOCATED AND SPOKE ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS THAT THEY'RE HAVING, STUDENTS WHO RECEIVE SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL, AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SUPPORT AND ACHIEVE BETTER ACADEMICALLY.
YES, WE'RE HERE TO MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS ARE SUCCESSFUL ACADEMICALLY.
BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, AS TRUSTEE DAVIS SPOKE TO EARLIER, WE WANT TO ADDRESS THE WHOLE CHILD.
ALSO, RESEARCH FINDS THAT WHEN WE ADDRESS EDUCATOR MENTAL HEALTH, WE INCREASE NOT ONLY PRODUCTIVITY, MORALE, BUT ALSO INVOLVEMENT.
BASICALLY, WE WANT TO ADDRESS THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY IN THIS MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM BECAUSE WHEN CISD STUDENTS HAVE HEALTHY MENTAL HEALTH, THEIR LIVES AND THEIR MINDS ARE BETTER, AND THEY HAVE A QUALITY EDUCATION.
NEXT, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT NOT ONLY OUR RESEARCH AND THE REASONS WHY WE NEED TO HAVE THIS SYMPOSIUM AND RESOURCE FAIR.
OUR DISTRICT, BY THE SUPPORT OF OUR AWESOME BOARD, ADOPTED CARE SOLACE.
DR. HAMLET WAS INTEGRAL IN BRINGING THIS PROGRAM HERE.
TO DATE, WE HAVE OVER 1,177 COMMUNICATIONS WHERE PARENTS, TEACHERS, AND STUDENTS HAVE USED THIS RESOURCE.
THIS HAS BEEN AN AWESOME INVESTMENT, AND IT SPEAKS TO THE DATA NOT ONLY IN THE WORLD, BUT HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY IN CROWLEY ISD.
NEXT, LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE OVERVIEW FOR THE DAY.
WE'RE GOING TO START, WHICH IS NOT INDICATED HERE.
WE HAVE THE POTTERS HOUSE, PASTOR WHITFIELD.
WE WILL HAVE PRAYER AT THE POLL STARTED BEFORE THE EVENT BECAUSE AS WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, ANYONE WANTS TO JOIN AND JUST LINK UP ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS IN OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR WORLD, WE WILL HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO JUST LINK UP THERE AT THAT TIME BEFORE THE SYMPOSIUM AND RESOURCE FAIR BEGINS.
BUT WE'LL BEGIN WITH A WELCOME FROM OUR VERY OWN DR. MICHAEL MCFARLAND.
WE SECURED OUR KEYNOTE SPEAKER, NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE AND MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER, TRENT SHELTON.
WE'LL ALSO HAVE A VOICE OF THE STUDENTS PANEL, AND DURING THIS TIME, THEY WILL FURTHER GET TO SHARE THEIR NEEDS AS WELL AS REQUESTS AND SUPPORTS THAT THEY WILL RECEIVE WITH MENTAL HEALTH.
WE'LL HAVE BREAKOUT SESSIONS FROM A PLETHORA OF MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS ALONG WITH OUR FAITH-BASED COMMUNITIES.
WHEN WE HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT THIS TO THEM, MANY OF OUR FAITH-BASED COMMUNITIES REACHED
[01:25:01]
OUT AND SAID THEY WANTED TO BE ON BOARD 100 PERCENT, AS WELL AS INVITE THEIR CONGREGATION AND THOSE THAT THEY SERVE IN THEIR COMMUNITIES.WE'LL HAVE RESOURCE TABLES AND GIVEAWAYS.
I LIKE TO SPEAK TO THE RESOURCE TABLES.
WE NOT ONLY WANT TO PROVIDE INFORMATION, BUT WE WANT TO PROVIDE RESOURCES.
A PARENT SAYS MY STUDENT IS DEPRESSED.
I'M SO GRATEFUL I FOUND OUT WHAT DEPRESSION LOOKS LIKE.
WELL, THEY WALK AWAY NOT KNOWING WHAT TO DO.
THE OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO HAVE RESOURCES AND A WAY TO HELP THEIR CHILD OR EVEN HELP THEMSELVES WILL BE AT THIS RESOURCE FAIR, SO WE HAVE MANY PARTNERS.
MHMR ARE LEADING TARRANT COUNTY, MENTAL HEALTH AGENCY WILL PARTNER WITH US ALONG WITH A PLETHORA OF OTHER AGENCIES AND FAITH-BASED COMMUNITIES.
MY APOLOGIES. NOW, LET'S TALK ABOUT THE DETAILS.
JANUARY 28, YES, IT IS A SATURDAY, IT IS AN INVESTMENT, BUT I THINK A WORTHY ONE FOR EVERYONE IN THIS COMMUNITY.
FROM 9:00 AM TO 3:00 PM, PARTICIPANTS WILL BE ABLE TO COME AND GO AS THEY PLEASE.
WE WILL ALSO LOOK AT HAVING A JOB FAIR WHERE STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO PARTICIPATE AND GET JOBS AND OUR PARENTS TO JUST ALLEVIATE STRESS BECAUSE WE HAVE WORK, AND WE HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO JUST LOOK AT SOME OF THE THINGS.
FINANCIAL STRESS IS SOMETHING THAT WE ALSO STRUGGLE FROM.
IT CAN CAUSE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.
THAT WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE PARTNERING WITH MR. MOHAMED AND HIS TEAM TO DO SO.
IT WILL BE HELD AT OUR BILL R. J. CTE CENTER.
IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, THIS CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION.
I AM OPEN FOR QUESTIONS AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MS. HARRIS, FOR BRINGING THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO US.
I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF LISTENING TO SOME PRE-INFORMATION AND I WAS JUST AMAZED BY IT.
I KNOW MENTAL HEALTH HAS BEEN A TABOO TYPE SUBJECT AS THE STUDENT MENTIONED FOR A LONG TIME AND SO NOW I'M VERY APPRECIATIVE THAT IT'S COMING TO LIGHT AND THE MESSAGE IS IT'S OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP.
I APPRECIATE THE DISTRICT, DR. MCFARLAND AND YOUR TEAM, DR. HAMLET, FOR BRINGING THIS TO THE DISTRICT AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD, IT'S ON MY CALENDAR, LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT DAY WHEN WE CAN PARTICIPATE AND LEARN AND TAKE AWAY, AS YOU'VE MENTIONED HERE.
I THINK IT'LL BE JUST AN AWESOME DAY OF LEARNING FOR THE WHOLE DISTRICT.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS? TRUSTEE ROBINSON.
>> I WAS GOING TO SAY, I APPRECIATE YOU INCLUDING PARENTS AND EDUCATORS, BECAUSE [NOISE] IT IS DIFFICULT TO POUR WHEN YOU'RE EMPTY, AND POUR FROM AN EMPTY CUP.
MANY PARENTS GREW UP WITH ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES BACK IN THEIR DAY.
THERE WASN'T TALK ABOUT WHAT SHOULD WE DO ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH? IT WAS PRAY AND WE MOVE ON.
RECOGNIZING THAT ADULTS NEED HELP IN ORDER TO HELP CHILDREN, IS A HUGE AMOUNT AND IT IS A BLESSING TO OUR COMMUNITY THAT WE'RE ABLE TO PROVIDE THIS, NOT ONLY FOR KIDS, BUT AGAIN, LOOKING AT ADULTS, AND LOOK AT THEM AND HOW CAN WE STRENGTHEN THE COMMUNITY.
>> FOR ME, I CALL THIS CONNECTING THE DOTS, BECAUSE CROWLEY IS AHEAD OF THE GAME, IN MY OPINION, IN REALIZING THE NEED FOR SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL AWARENESS AND DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT.
IN THIS COUNTRY, IT TOOK US A WHILE TO UNDERSTAND THAT HUNGRY CHILDREN CAN'T LEARN, SO WE STARTED THE FEEDING PROGRAM.
WE HAVE YET TO GET TO THAT POINT WITH UNDERSTANDING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AND THE WHOLE MOUNTAIN HILL THING.
THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THIS AGAIN.
CROWLEY IS ON THE CUTTING EDGE.
OTHER DISTRICTS MAY BE DOING IT.
I HAVEN'T HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT IT, BUT WE'RE ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF MEETING THE NEEDS OF NOT ONLY OUR STUDENTS, BUT OUR COMMUNITY.
THANK YOU FOR BEING INNOVATIVE AND DOING THIS.
>> AT THIS TIME, WE'LL HEAR FROM OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR IF YOU NEED
[01:30:02]
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OR DO YOU? MS. HARRIS, DOCUMENT WHAT THEY MAY HAVE. I THINK THEY HAVE SOMETHING.>> I HAVE A QUESTION, AND MY QUESTION IS, WILL THIS SYMPOSIUM BE REOCCURRING OR IS IT JUST THIS ONE INSTANCE?
>> WHILE WE DEFINITELY WILL CONTINUE TO ADDRESS MENTAL HEALTH.
THE MONTH OF JANUARY, WHICH I DID NOT MENTION THE ENTIRE MONTH OF JANUARY, WE'RE GOING TO FOCUS IN OUR DISTRICT ON MENTAL HEALTH.
THIS WILL BE THE CULMINATING ACTIVITY.
HOWEVER, WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE TO FOCUS ON MENTAL HEALTH AND ASSESS WHAT THOSE NEEDS ARE AND MOST DEFINITELY WE DON'T SEE THIS AS A ONETIME THING.
DURING THE PANDEMIC WE DID HOST TWO BACK-TO-BACK YEARS VIRTUAL EVENTS WHERE WE PROVIDED FOR OUR EDUCATORS, OUR MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORTS VIA THE ZOOM PLATFORM, BUT WE WILL CONTINUE.
THIS ONLY GETS BIGGER FROM HERE BECAUSE MENTAL HEALTH IS SOMETHING THAT'S NOT GOING AWAY IN TERMS OF THE NEEDS AND THE RISING MENTAL HEALTH STRUGGLES.
WE WILL CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO OUR CONSTITUENTS SUCH AS YOURSELF AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ADDRESS THOSE NEEDS.
>> WONDERFUL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUESTION.
THE ONLY THING ELSE I'LL ADD IS MEETING THE TOPICS.
WHAT TYPES OF TOPICS? BECAUSE I THINK WHEN WE THINK OF MENTAL HEALTH, WE MAY HAVE JUST TWO OR THREE DESCRIPTORS FOR MENTAL HEALTH.
BUT AS I'M LEARNING, IT COVERS A BROAD ARRAY OF DIFFERENT EMOTIONS AND DESCRIPTORS.
CAN YOU JUST SHED A LITTLE LIGHT ON WHAT SOME OF THOSE TOPICS MIGHT BE?
>> SURE THING. I'LL TURN THE PLATFORM OVER TO DR. HAMLET.
HE HAS A LIST OF THINGS THAT WE HAVE SO FAR.
THE ONLY ONES I WILL MENTION THAT REALLY I'M EXCITED ABOUT IS DEBUNKING THE MYTHS OF MENTAL HEALTH AND SPIRITUALITY BECAUSE WE KNOW AS A COMMUNITY OFTENTIMES, AS YOU INDICATED, TRUSTEE ROBINSON, MANY SAY, LET'S PRAY AWAKE PERIOD AWAY AND IT'LL BE OVERWEIGHT.
BUT WE REALLY WANT TO TAP INTO HELPING PARENTS OR EDUCATORS OR EVEN STUDENTS KNOW THAT IT'S NOT SOMETHING THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF AND THAT JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVE A FAITH, IT DOESN'T MEAN THAT THEY CAN'T GET SUPPORT FOR THOSE STRUGGLES. DR. HAMLET.
>> DR. MCFARLAND, MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF BOARD.
FIRST OF ALL, THIS IS A BLESSING TO ME.
THEY'VE WORKED WITH THIS TYPE OF PROJECT AND MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE BECAUSE IT'S SPECIAL TO ME BECAUSE I KNOW HOW IMPORTANT IT IS.
SOME OF THE TOPICS ARE ANXIETY AND SITUATIONAL DEPRESSION.
ANXIETY, IT ALSO WILL BE PRESENTED IN SPANISH, ALSO.
SUICIDE, STRESS MANAGEMENT, BULLYING, AND ANXIETY.
THEY WILL BE PRESENTING ON ALL THE VARIOUS DIFFERENT RESOURCES AND VOLUNTARY COUNTY BESIDES MENTAL HEALTH, GRIEF, AND BEREAVEMENT.
ONE OF PRESENT DAYS ON MY HEART BECAUSE I KNOW WE LOOK AT PEOPLE THAT ARE DEALING OR STRUGGLING WITH MENTAL HEALTH.
WE ALSO WANT TO REACH THOSE OUT THERE THAT MAY NOT BE DEALING WITH IT.
BEFORE THEN WE GET THE TOOLS TO BEING TO IDENTIFY THOSE THAT I HAVEN'T THOSE DIFFICULTIES.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU'RE GOING THROUGH THAT, THEY CAN EXPRESS THAT.
WE HAVE TO HAVE THOSE PEOPLE THERE THAT LOVE THEM TO BE TO HELP THEM, DO THAT, TO BE ABLE TO SEE THAT.
IN MY HEART SAYS WE'RE TRYING TO TOUCH NOT ONLY THOSE THAT ARE STRUGGLING BUT THOSE FAMILY MEMBERS WE CAN HELP THEM.
BECAUSE WHEN YOU GO ON THROUGH MENTAL HEALTH, YOU CAN'T BE AN ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF [NOISE] SO WE HAVE TO BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THAT AND RECOGNIZE THAT.
I JUST WANT TO SHARE THAT WITH YOU.
IN MY HEART AND I'M JUST GOING TO BE REAL WITH INDIVIDUALS, I HAVE A MOTHER THAT IS STRESSED STRUGGLING WITH THIS AND I DIDN'T HAVE THE TOOLS BUT WHEN DR. MCFARLAND GAVE ME THAT OPPORTUNITY I SAID I WILL TILL THIS DAY, WILL DO WHAT I CAN TO HELP EACH AND EVERY INDIVIDUAL.
[01:35:01]
WE EXPECT TO REACH AS MANY PEOPLE AND THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE THE LAST TIME.THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO SHARE MY HEART.
THANK YOU ALLOW ME TO SHARE HOW IMPORTANT THIS TOPIC IS.
THANK YOU AND I'M GRACIOUS BOARD.
>> THANK YOU, DR. HAMLET [APPLAUSE]
>> I JUST WANT TO FOLLOW UP ALSO THANK YOU HAMLET AND HARRIS FOR LEAVING INITIATIVE, BUT ALSO TO THE STUDENTS A QUESTION OF THIS MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVE THIS SYMPOSIUM IS ACTUALLY ON LAUNCH FOR THE YEAR 2023.
WE WILL BE LAUNCHING OUR HEALTH IS WEALTH INITIATIVE.
WHAT THAT MEANS TO US FROM AN ACADEMIC STANDPOINT WE RECOGNIZE WE INDEX STUDENT'S ACADEMIC HEALTH IN ON A DAILY BASIS. THAT'S WHAT WE DO.
WE ALSO KNOW THAT THERE'S OTHER FACET OF HEALTH THAT WE NEED TO ADDRESS.
WE COUNT ON OUR FAITH-BASED PARTNERS TO ADDRESS THE SPIRITUAL HEALTH.
BUT FOR AS FAR AS THE SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL, MENTAL HEALTH, WE FEEL LIKE WE CAN BE THE GROUP THAT PULLS THE PROVIDERS TO THE ONES THAT NEED IT.
WE'LL START THIS INITIATIVE IN JANUARY, BUT IT WILL GO THROUGHOUT THE CALENDAR YEAR OF 2023.
WE ALSO PLAN TO FOCUS ON OUR FINANCIAL HEALTH AND FINANCIAL LITERACY.
WE WILL BE LAUNCHING A FINANCIAL LITERACY THROUGH OUR PARENT UNIVERSITY.
THAT'S RIGHT NOW WE HAVE VIRTUAL OPTIONS.
WE WILL ALSO HAVE A SEVERAL FACE-TO-FACE OPTIONS.
I 'LL LET MR. MOHAMED TO COME UP AND JUST SHARE BRIEFLY.
JUST BRIEF YOU THROUGH THE PARENT UNIVERSITY, I WANT TO SHARE THIS WITH Y'ALL NOW BECAUSE WE HAVE SLUM WE'LL BE STARTING IN JANUARY.
WANT TO GIVE US JUST THE OVERVIEW OF PARENT UNIVERSITY AND HOW WE WILL BE ADDRESSING FINANCIAL LITERACY THROUGHOUT THAT.
>> HEY, THANKS, DR. MCFARLAND.
GOOD EVENING ONCE AGAIN, DR. [INAUDIBLE] MAYFIELD, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. MCFARLAND.
WE ARE GOING TO BE IMPLEMENTING THE PARENT UNIVERSITY FOCUSED ON FINANCIAL LITERACY.
THE FIRST SESSION IS GOING TO BE LIKE DR. MCFARLAND SAID, ON ZOOM, JANUARY 23RD, 6:30.
FIRST SESSION WILL BASICALLY BE A HIGH LEVEL OVERVIEW OF STOCK MARKET, INVESTING, SAVING AND THOSE THINGS.
JUST GIVING BASIC INFORMATION THAT PEOPLE MIGHT NOT NECESSARILY KNOW.
THEN WE'LL GOING TO DIG INTO TAXES.
YOU'LL SEE CPA THAT'S GOING TO BE COMING IN.
WE'RE GOING TO LOOK AT INCOME PROTECTION, ASSET ALLOCATION, THOSE LIFE INSURANCE.
WE HAVE A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS THAT WE'LL BE LOOKING AT CREDIT, AND I THINK IT'S INTERESTING THAT WE'RE DOING THIS IN COORDINATION WITH MENTAL HEALTH BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL TELL YOU THAT A LOT OF TIME WHEN YOU GO DEEP IN THE DAY IS ALL IN COORDINATION WITH MENTAL HEALTH.
I HAVE A LOT OF FRIENDS WHO ARE DROWNING IN DEBT AND A LOT OF REASON IS THAT THEY'RE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR MENTAL HEALTH.
I THINK IT'S GOING TO BE A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO TALK ABOUT FINANCES AROUND SAME TIME WE TALK ABOUT MENTAL HEALTH.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT. I'M SORRY.
>> I WAS JUST GOING TO SAY, MR. MOHAMED, THANK YOU FOR YOU AND YOUR TEAM FOR YOUR WILLINGNESS TO ADDRESS FINANCIAL LITERACY AND IN CONJUNCTION WITH MENTAL HEALTH.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WILL ENCOURAGE IS THE THINGS THAT YOU TALKED ABOUT ADDRESSING IN THIS FIRST AND SUBSEQUENT SESSIONS ARE GREAT.
YOU KNOW THAT I'M AN ADVOCATE FOR PERSONAL FINANCE AND WHATNOT, BUT I WOULD ALSO ENCOURAGE US TO ALSO DEAL WITH THE BASICS OF BUDGETING BECAUSE BEFORE WE CAN TALK ABOUT INVESTING AND LONG-TERM SAVINGS AND ALL THOSE THINGS, SOMETIMES WE GOT TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO MAKE IT TO THE END OF MONTH.
BECAUSE I'M SURE MANY OF US CAN ATTEST TO THERE'RE BEING TIMES WHERE IT SEEMS THAT THERE IS MORE MONTH THAN MONEY AND THOSE BASICS OF BUDGETING, I THINK, WILL ALSO HELP REASSURE SOME INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES AS TO HOW YOU CAN MAKE IT REGARDLESS OF WHAT YOUR INCOME IS.
THERE ARE SOME TOOLS THAT WE CAN PUT IN PLACE TO POSSIBLY HELP ALLEVIATE SOME OF THE STRESS JUST BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND HOW TO MANAGE A BUDGET. THANK YOU.
>> ONE MORE THING TO ADDRESS AND I APPRECIATE YOU BRINGING THAT UP.
THAT'S DEFINITELY ON A LINEUP I HAVE SOME PEOPLE TO HAVE PRETTY BIG TIME THAT ARE COMING IN AND I'M JUST WORKING AROUND HERE PARTICULAR SCHEDULES, SO DEFINITELY [INAUDIBLE] ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?
>> IT'S NOT A QUESTION FOR YOU.
IT'S A QUESTION FOR STUDENTS OR NOT A QUESTION BUT COMMENT.
WHEN YOU ADVERTISE ABOUT THIS SYMPOSIUM AND YOU SAID YOU'RE COMING AND YOU'RE GOING TO ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS, TELL THEM TO BRING THEIR PARENTS WITH THEM.
WE WANT AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE TO HEAR THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION, SO NOT ALL ENCOURAGE YOUR FRIENDS TO COME OR THE STUDENTS IN YOUR SCHOOL, BUT TELL STUDENTS TO BRING THEIR PARENTS.
[01:40:08]
THANK YOU. DR. MCFARLAND.WE ARE AT AGENDA ITEM 9.2, CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS. DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBER MISS MONTALVO WILL PRESENT THIS ITEM. MISS MONTALVO
>> GOOD EVENING DR. MCFARLAND, MADAM PRESIDENT AND ALL BOARD MEMBERS, THANK YOU FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.
IN LINE WITH GOAL 1, THRIVING STUDENTS, GOAL 2, ENGAGE COMMUNITY, AND GOAL 3 EMPOWER STAFF.
THIS EVENING WE'RE BRINGING OUR AGENDA ITEM, CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.
AS YOU KNOW, THIS IS AN ANNUAL REQUIREMENT.
THE CONTINUING EDUCATION GUIDELINES ADOPTED BY THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION FOR BOARD MEMBERS STATES THAT EACH MEMBER SHALL COMPLETE VARIOUS HOURS OF CONTINUING EDUCATION ANNUALLY.
AS YOU KNOW, THIS IS AN ADDITION TO THE COUNTLESS HOURS THAT YOU ALL DEDICATE MONTHLY TO SUPPORTING CISD.
ADDITIONALLY, THE PRESIDENT MUST ANNUALLY DISTRIBUTE THE FRAMEWORK FOR GOVERNANCE LEADERSHIP AND MAKE A PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT FOR THOSE BOARD MEMBERS THAT HAVE COMPLETED THE REQUIRED CONTINUING EDUCATION, WHO HAD EXCEEDED THE REQUIRED HOURS, AND WHO ARE EFFICIENT.
FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, HARD COPIES OF THE FRAMEWORK THE ANNOUNCEMENT MUST BE MADE UP.
THE LAST REGULAR BOARD MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES DURING THE CALENDAR YEAR OR HERE THIS EVENING.
MADAM PRESIDENT, I AM PROUD TO ANNOUNCE TO YOU THAT ALL OF OUR TRUSTEES HAVE COMPLETED THE REQUIRED CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION TRAINING AND THERE ARE NO DEFECIENCIES.
>> I WAS HOLDING MY BREATHE JUST LIKE GET TO IT.
>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMITMENT, YOUR LEADERSHIP, AND GOVERNANCE.
WE GREATLY VALUE AND APPRECIATE.
I APPRECIATE IT AND THANK YOU BOARD FOR YOUR COMMITMENT TO CONTINUING TO LEARN AND GROW AS A BOARD.
WE DO HAVE A DISCUSSION ITEM AND IT'S AGENDA ITEM 10.1,
[10.0 Discussion Item (s)]
PROCESS AND TOOLS FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF CROWLEY ISD LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES AND POSITIONS AND DISCUSSION REGARDING SCHOOL BOARDS ADVOCACY APPROACH. DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE HAVE MS. BATISTE WHO WILL BE COMING FORWARD.
BUT ACTUALLY MS. BATISTE I'D LIKE YOU TO GO AFTER ATTORNEY COLLIER JUST TO PROVIDE US WITH A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF THE LEGISLATIVE TOPICS THAT SHE BELIEVES WILL BE HOT TOPIC THIS YEAR, THEN AFTER THAT, WE'LL HAVE MS. BATISTE COME BACK AND SHARE WITH YOU-ALL HOW WE INTEND TO MONITOR INTERNAL.
GOOD EVENING, DR. MCFARLAND, PRESIDENT DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD, AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD FOR GIVING ME THIS OPPORTUNITY TO PRESENT TO YOU.
I'VE JUST BEEN SO IMPRESSED WITH THE PRESENTATIONS AND THE INFORMATION THAT HAS BEEN SHARED.
I'M SO EXCITED FOR THE STUDENTS AND LISTENING TO SARAYA SPEAK, I NEED TO GET HER ON MY STAFF QUICKLY.
BUT I DO WANT TO SAY THAT AS I DO REPRESENT THIS AREA AND TRUSTEE DAVIS, LET ME TELL YOU, WHENEVER THERE'S LEGISLATION THAT'S COMING OUT, I THINK THAT I HAVE THE HOT TICKET, I HAVE THE WINNING INFORMATION.
NOW LOOK BACK AT CROWLEY ISD, AND YOU'VE ALREADY DONE IT.
YOU'VE BEEN A PIONEER FOR A LONG TIME LIKE YOU'VE RECOGNIZED.
YOU HAVE YOUR ONE CONFERENCE DOWN NEXT YEAR YOU'LL BE PRESENTING BECAUSE THAT'S HOW FORWARD THINKING CROWLEY IS.
YOU GUYS REALLY ARE SETTING THE TONE IN THE PATH FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS.
BUT I DID WANT TO SHARE SOME INFORMATION WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT IT'S BEEN FILED FOR THE UPCOMING LEGISLATIVE SESSION WHICH STARTS JANUARY 10TH.
THERE'S BEEN SO MANY BILLS, OVER 100 BILLS, 160 BILLS FILED THAT DEAL WITH PUBLIC EDUCATION.
I WANTED TO JUST HIGHLIGHT A FEW THAT YOU SHOULD BE AWARE OF.
NOW KEEP IN MIND THE BILLS THAT ARE ON THIS DOCUMENT THAT I'VE SHARED WITH YOU ARE JUST BILLS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED.
THERE'S NO GUARANTEE THAT THEY WILL PASS, LET ALONE GET A HEARING, BUT JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW WHAT AS ON THE HORIZON.
THERE HAVE BEEN DIFFERENT BILLS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED THAT RANGE ON TOPICS FROM ASSESSMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY, TEACHER, WORKFORCE, STUDENT NEEDS, AND SCHOOL FUNDING.
THE LAST DAY TO FILE A BILL IS GOING TO BE MARCH 10 OF 2023.
ONE OF THE BILLS THAT I WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT DEALT WITH TEACHER PAY.
[01:45:03]
YOU PROBABLY HAS A REALLY COMPETITIVE PAY BUT NOT EVERY SCHOOL DISTRICT DOES.THERE HAVE BEEN BILLS THAT HAD BEEN FILED THAT WOULD ADDRESS INCREASING THE SALARY AND WAGES FOR OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL EMPLOYEES.
ANOTHER BILL, HB 977, WHICH HAS BEEN FILED RELATES TO THE CREATION OF A TEXAS COMMISSION ON ASSESSMENT AND ACCOUNTABILITY.
WE HEARD ABOUT OAKMONT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL WITH THEIR ACCOUNTABILITY ASSESSMENT.
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT WE'RE TRYING TO ACHIEVE THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE STATE OF TEXAS.
ANOTHER BILL THAT IS IMPORTANT DEALS WITH THE AVERAGE ENROLLMENT FOR PURPOSES OF PUBLIC SCHOOL FINANCING.
WHAT WE NOTICE IS THAT YOUR SCHOOL DISTRICT HAS BEEN SUBJECT TO RECAPTURE WHERE YOU'D HAVE TO SEND MONEY BACK TO THE STATE.
BUT THAT'S BASED ON AVERAGE DAILY ATTENDANCE.
THERE HAVE BEEN MULTIPLE BILLS THAT WOULD ALTER THAT CONSIDERATION IN USUAL ENROLLMENT NUMBERS INSTEAD, SO NOT THE DAILY ATTENDANCE BUT ENROLLMENT AND THAT WOULD BE A BIG BENEFIT FOR CROWLEY ISD.
ANOTHER ONE DEALS WITH THE MENTAL HEALTH AND I HEARD ABOUT THE MENTAL HEALTH SYMPOSIUM.
THERE'S A BILL. I WASN'T GOING TO MENTION THIS UNTIL I JUST HEARD THAT.
IT DEALS WITH ITS HB 98 AND IT RELATES TO THE PROVISION OF ON-CAMPUS MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES BY SCHOOL DISTRICT AND REIMBURSEMENT UNDER MEDICAID FOR CERTAIN SERVICES PROVIDED TO ELIGIBLE STUDENTS.
THAT'S ACTUALLY PROVIDING THE SERVICES ON CAMPUS.
YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT SERVING THE WHOLE STUDENT.
IF YOU COULD GET A MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER HERE ON CAMPUS AND GET REIMBURSED FOR IT THAT WOULD BE VERY HELPFUL FOR THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
I BRING THESE UP BECAUSE THESE ARE BILLS THAT YOU CAN FOLLOW ALONG OR THE LEGISLATIVE SESSION AND SUPPORT AND YOU CAN ADVOCATE FOR THEM AS WELL.
YOU COULD ADVOCATE FOR THESE BILLS.
THEN OF COURSE, THERE'S BEEN BILLS ABOUT CHARTER SCHOOLS THAT HAVE BEEN FILED, BUT I'LL LEAVE THAT UP TO YOU.
THERE'S $27 BILLION THAT THE STATE HAS OVERFLOW OF.
THERE HAS BEEN DISCUSSIONS TO PROVIDE PROPERTY TAX RELIEF, BUT IT WON'T BE TO THE EXPENSE OF OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS.
THERE ARE MULTIPLE OPTIONS THAT ARE BEING PRESENTED ON WAYS TO FILL THE GAP.
IF THERE'S AN INCREASE IN HOMESTEAD EXEMPTIONS, WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THIS DOES NOT NEGATIVELY IMPACT OUR SCHOOLS.
BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THAT AND BE PREPARED AND I WELCOME YOU TO VISIT THE CAPITAL AND MAKE SURE YOU STAY ON TOP OF THE LEGISLATION.
IT'S SO IMPORTANT BECAUSE THEIR LEGISLATORS ARE MAKING DECISIONS THAT IMPACT YOU EVERY DAY.
YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE YOUR SEAT AT THE TABLE.
WITH THAT I'LL TAKE ANY QUESTIONS.
>> BOARD DO YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? THANK YOU REPRESENTATIVE COLLIER FOR PRESENTING.
I DID HIGHLIGHT EVERYTHING THAT YOU SHARED AND THANK YOU FOR THIS, AND GO BACK AND REVIEW THE REST OF THE BOARD.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> IT'S NOT A QUESTION PER SE AND WE'LL PROBABLY TALK ABOUT THIS WHEN MISS THIES COMES.
BUT I DO SERVE ON A PUBLIC POLICY COMMITTEE.
WE WERE LOOKING AT LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY AGENDA YESTERDAY.
SOME OF THESE ITEMS ARE SIMILAR.
I DON'T SEE ANYTHING ON HERE REGARDING EARLY CHILDHOOD.
WE KNOW THAT BIG BILLS HAVE BEEN FILED AT THE MOMENT.
>> THERE HAVE BEEN SOME BILLS IN EARLY CHILDHOOD, I WILL TELL YOU THIS IS ALL PRELIMINARY.
SOME PEOPLE LIKE TO KEEP THEIR BILLS UNDER WRAPS.
THEY WANT TO WAIT UNTIL THE SESSION STARTS FOR VARIOUS REASONS.
I ANTICIPATE THAT THERE WILL BE MORE BILLS FILED SINCE WE HAVE UNTIL MARCH 10 OF 2023.
BUT OF COURSE, UNIVERSAL PRE-K IS A VERY IMPORTANT OPTION THAT'S PAID FOR BASICALLY THAT OUR SCHOOL DISTRICTS CAN GET REIMBURSED FOR THAT PRE-K FOR EVERYONE.
THAT'S WHAT WE WOULD WANT TO SEE.
IT'S IN LINE WITH WHAT MR. MOHAMED MENTIONED ABOUT FINANCIAL LITERACY PORTION.
BUT GOING BACK TO THE PROPERTY TAX BILL, I FOUND OUT YESTERDAY THAT 39 PER CENT OR 40 PERCENT OF RESIDENTS IN TARRANT COUNTY ARE RENTERS.
THEY WANTED TO SEE THOSE FUNDS.
THE FINANCIAL IMPACT AND THE PEOPLE WHO MAY NEED THIS MONEY THE MOST OF THAT 27 MILLION MAY NOT GET IT.
AS A LEGISLATOR WHAT COULD WE DO TO IMPACT PEOPLE IN LOW SOCIOECONOMIC AREAS? BECAUSE WE KNOW, I THINK OUR DISTRICT IS WHAT, 65 PERCENT ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED.
[01:50:02]
WE HAVE POPULATIONS OF STUDENTS HERE WHOSE PARENTS ARE EITHER UNDEREMPLOYED, UNEMPLOYED, AND SO THEY MAY NOT BE HOMELESS AND THEY NEED THE MONEY THE MOST.A GREAT QUESTION AND ONE THAT THE ANSWERS AREN'T ALWAYS THERE FOR RIGHT AT THE BEGINNING, BUT WE WANT TO MEET THE INDIVIDUAL WHERE THEY ARE.
IF IT'S DEALING WITH FOODS LIKE YOU MENTIONED, TRUSTEE DAVIS, A FOOD DESERT, THEN MAYBE WE LOOK AT PROVIDING RESOURCES FOR GROWING GARDENS OR SOMETHING.
CHILDCARE, CHILDCARE IS COMING EXPENSES.
THEN WE LOOK AT OPTIONS FOR REDUCING THOSE CHILDCARES, BUT WE WANT TO MEET THE INDIVIDUAL WHERE THEY ARE.
THAT MAY MEAN INVESTING IN PROGRAMS THAT HELP WITH THEIR EDUCATION THAT EXPAND THEIR TRAINING IN DIFFERENT AREAS.
I THINK THAT IT TAKES ALL OF US COMING TOGETHER, WORKING TOGETHER TO COME UP WITH SOLUTIONS THAT MEET THE INDIVIDUAL.
ONE THING THAT WE'RE GOING TO STAND AGAINST IS A SALES TAX INCREASE BECAUSE THAT WOULD HURT AND HAVE A NEGATIVE IMPACT.
WHEN YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT THE SALES TAX, WE HAVE 8.2 MAX.
IF YOU INCREASE IT, THAT WOULD HURT THE MOST VULNERABLE PEOPLE.
THOSE ARE THINGS THAT WE HAVE TO DO.
SOMETIMES IT'S JUST STAYING AGAINST CERTAIN THINGS THAT WOULD HELP PEOPLE TOO.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ROBINSON, FOR THE QUESTIONS AND THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE PRESENTATION.
NOW WE'LL HAVE MS. BATISTE COME RIGHT BACK UP.
>> ONCE SHE'S COMING, MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, OF COURSE, YOU ALL KNOW THAT WE HAVE OUR LEGISLATIVE COMMITTEE AND WE'VE HAD SOME CONVERSATIONS ABOUT AN APPROACH TO ADVOCACY AS A BOARD WE'D LIKE TO SAY.
IN THE PAST, WE HAVE HAD BREAKFAST WITH THE LEGISLATORS BEFORE THE SESSION.
ESPECIALLY WITH THE COMMITTEE, WE'VE DECIDED TO POP THE SIDE INTO POSSIBLY ALTERNATE APPROACH.
MS. BETSY'S CAN GUIDE YOU THROUGH HOW WE'LL BE MONITORING DEALS AND THEN WHAT WE SEE IS POSSIBLE EXCEL, BETSY'S.
>> DO THEY MEAN, MADAM PRESIDENT MAYFIELD, DR. MCFARLAND AND BOARD OF TRUSTEES.
GOING ONTO OUR NEXT SLIDE AND DEVELOPMENT OF OUR CROWLEY ISD LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES AND OUR POSITION, OUR LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES COMMITTEE MET ON DECEMBER 6TH TO DISCUSS THE POSSIBLE PRIORITIES FOR CIC AND HOW WE'RE GOING TO APPROACH THE UPCOMING LEGISLATIVE SESSION.
THE COMMITTEE REVIEWED OUR PREVIOUS LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES, THE CURRENT PRIORITIES OF TWO URBAN SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN TEXAS, AND THAT HAS THE LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES THAT THEY HAVE ALREADY SHARED.
IN YOUR BOARD PACKETS TONIGHT YOU;LL RECEIVE THIS PACKET FROM PASSERSBY.
IT'S JUST BASICALLY GIVING US A GOOD GUIDELINE TO GET STARTED ON SOME OF THE BIG ITEMS LIKE TURNING COLOR YOU'RE SHARING WITH US SO FAR.
OUR CURRENT COMMITTEE IS MONITORING AND TRACKING BILLS REGARDING TEXAS SCHOOL DISTRICT SLATED TO BE INTRODUCED IN THE TEXAS HOUSE AND THE SENATE EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
AS OF DECEMBER 15TH, THOSE OF US WHO ARE MONITORING THE TEXAS LEGISLATOR ONLINE SITE THAT WAS GIVEN TO US BY TRUSTEE ROUNDS AND THE TRUSTEE DAVIS, DURING OUR MEETING, HE FOUND 161 BILLS FILED AS OF THE 15TH.
WE HAVE A LINK THAT WE STARTED COMPILING.
WHAT WE SEE SO FAR AND WILL BE WORKING ON IT UNTIL MARCH.
SOME OF THE AREAS THAT WE ARE SEEING A LOT OF SO FAR, OUR PROPERTY TAX, SECURITY AND SOME OF THE SAME INITIATIVES THAT ATTORNEY KAERY SHARED WITH US.
THIS WILL BE ONGOING AND FUNDING AS FAR AS THE ENROLLMENT, THESE ARE SOME BIG ITEMS SO FAR.
OUR NEXT AREA, WHAT OUR COMMUNITY IS EXPLORING IS THE POSSIBILITY OF A CROWLEY ISD DAY AT THE CAPITAL DURING THE CONVENING OF THE ADA STATE LEGISLATIVE SLATE OF SESSIONS, EXCUSE ME.
THE PURPOSE OF THE CROWLEY ISD DAY AT THE CAPITALIST IS TO SHOW SUPPORT FOR BILLS BEING VOTED ON THAT ALIGN WITH OUR LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.
IT WILL BE AN OPPORTUNITY FOR EXISTING BOARD MEMBERS, DISTRICT EMPLOYEES TO ATTEND AS WELL, AND POSSIBLY EVEN SOME OF OUR STUDENTS TO ATTEND SO THEY CAN SPEAK ON BEHALF OF THE BILLS THAT ARE GOING TO AFFECT US.
THINGS LIKE ATTORNEY COLLIER SHARED WITH US.
OUR COMMITTEE MEMBERS ARE TRUSTEE DARYL R. DAVIS, TRUSTEE MIA HALL, TRUSTEE NEDRA ROBINSON, DR. MCFARLAND, MYSELF, ANTHONY KIRCHNER, MARLYS DIGGLES AND AND DR. PAMELA BERRY.
[01:55:04]
AT THIS TIME I'D BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS OR OPEN IT UP FOR DISCUSSION OR ANY ADDITIONS AT THIS TIME.BOARD, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> NO QUESTION. THANK YOU, MS. BATISTE FOR THE PRESENTATION.
I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT YOU EMPHASIZE THAT WE ARE ALSO CONSIDERING TAKING SOME OF OUR STUDENTS.
I THINK THIS IS CERTAINLY A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO SEE OUR LEGISLATURE IN ACTION, BUT ALSO AN EXTENSION OF THEIR SERVICE AS STUDENT TRUSTEE.
I DEFINITELY IN FAVOR OF ENSURING THAT THIS OPPORTUNITY IS ALSO A LEARNING EXPERIENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS.
THANK YOU FOR POINTING THAT OUT.
>> I JUST HAVE A QUESTION AND IT HASN'T BEEN DECIDED, BUT IS THIS THE COMMITTEE POINT TO MAKE A RECOMMENDATION OR WORK WITH REPRESENTATIVE COLLIER TO FIND A DATE.
>> WE WERE TALKING BEFORE THIS STARTED BOARD MEETINGS, I GUESS SHE'S A PART OF OUR COMMUNITY TOO.
WELL I WILL ADD HER NAMES OF THE SLAG
>> AWESOME ALSO BALLROOMS. I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT THE SPREADSHEET THAT THE TC AND OTHERS HAVE CREATED BY TC CURSOR THAT HEY CREATED IS ALSO AVAILABLE TO YOU AS WELL.
AS IT'S UPDATED, YOU'LL HAVE LINKS THAT YOU'LL BE GOING AT YOUR LEISURE IS LOOKING AT AND SEE.
AGAIN, WILL GET BACK IN JANUARY, WE'LL REALLY PROBABLY START BEING DELIVERED MORE REGULAR AND GET A DATE NAILED DOWN.
IT'S LIKELY THAT THE DATE WOULD BE IN THERE IN MARCH.
THAT'S AFTER ALL THE BILLS, AND FILE THAT WE CAN FIGURE OUT WHICH DIRECTION THINGS ARE GOING TO GO.
WE'LL BE FOLLOWING UP WITH YOU.
>> WE ALSO HAVE TO START WORKING WHEN WE GET BACK IN JANUARY ON OUR ACTUAL LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES.
PLEASE TAKE SOME TIME TO REVIEW YOUR THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AT THIS TIME, WE ARE AT OUR OPEN FORUM,

MY ADDRESS IS 917 REDBUD STREET IN CROWLEY.
GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS AND DR. MCFARLAND.
I'M THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT LIBRARIAN FOR CROWLEY PUBLIC LIBRARY.
MY LAST TWO AND A HALF YEARS HAVE BEEN SPENT DOING WHAT I LOVE.
I WAS ABLE TO WRITE A BOOK ABOUT THE HISTORY OF CROWLEY, STARTING WITH THE DEER CREEK SETTLEMENT AND THIS PLACE IS STILL GROWING.
[02:00:02]
ONE PARTICULAR CHAPTER, CHAPTER 6, WAS DEVOTED TO THIS SCHOOL DISTRICT.I DISCOVERED SOME NAMES AND ORGANIZATIONS IN CROWLEY WHO WERE INSTRUMENTAL IN FOUNDING AND BUILDING THIS DISTRICT.
THEY WEATHERED THE TWO SCHOOL FIRES THAT COULD HAVE TOTALLY DESTROYED THE DISTRICT IN THE FIRST HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
THE COMMUNITY UNITED WITH LOCAL CHURCHES, KEEPING THE SCHOOLS OPENED BY PROVIDING THEIR SPACE AS CLASSROOMS, AND WHEN THE REPAIRS WERE GOING ON CLEARLY COMMUNITY EFFORT.
NOW I'M GOING TO [NOISE] FAST-FORWARD TO TODAY.
IT'S MY DESIRE TO HAVE THE COMMUNITY AND THOSE WHO VISITED US IN CROWLEY KNOW ABOUT THE GREAT PEOPLE WHO'VE PASSED THROUGH THE DOORS, WALK DOWN THE HALLS OF CROWLEY SCHOOLS.
WHILE ATHLETICS DOES PLAY A KEY ROLE IN OUR NOTORIETY, THERE'S SO MUCH MORE.
THE AREA OF FINE ARTS SHOWS GREAT STRENGTH TOO.
CAN I DROP A COUPLE OF NAMES? IS IT OKAY IF I TELL YOU WHO I FOUND? [LAUGHTER] IN THE EARLY 80S, SCOTT WALES, WHO CAME IN THE NFL SUPER BOWL PLAYER WITH GREEN BAY PACKERS AND THE PRO BOWL IN 2021 WAS IN CROWLEY PITT PLAYING PEE WEE FOOTBALL.
THEN MOVED OUT FROM CROWLEY, HE DIDN'T GRADUATE FROM CROWLEY, BUT HE WAS HERE.
1980, GARY REASONS, NEW YORK GIANTS SUPER BOWL WINNER.
AFTER HIS RETIREMENT FROM FOOTBALL, HE BECAME A TV ANALYST WITH ESPN, ABC SPORTS, AND FOX SPORTS.
1989, JOEY MCGUIRE, FOOTBALL COACH FOR CHS, AND THEN MOVED ON TO TEXAS TECH.
1995, BRYAN BERTINO, AMERICAN FILMMAKER.
HE'S BEST KNOWN AS THE WRITER, DIRECTOR OF THE STRANGERS AND THEN IT'S SEQUEL, THE STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT.
1999, GORDON RICHARDSON, A GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING DRUMMER WHO TOURED WITH RINGO STARR.
2002, LANCE BARRET, MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL UMPIRE.
HE ENTERED THE MINOR LEAGUES IN 2003 AND MADE HIS MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DEBUT ON OCTOBER 1ST, 2010.
2006, [INAUDIBLE] , ACTORS ON CHICAGO FIRE AS SYLVIE AND OTHER THINGS.
2007, LEON BRIDGES, GRAMMY AWARD WINNER, JAZZ.
2020, AND RIGHT NOW, TYLER SMITH, NUMBER 73 FOR THE DALLAS COWBOYS, PLAYS LEFT TACKLE.
I FEEL CERTAIN THERE ARE MANY MORE THAT I'VE MISSED BUT MY POINT IS THIS LECTURE, THESE PEOPLE WITH EVERYONE CONSIDER CREATING A WALL OF FAME OR GIVE IT ANOTHER NAME IN THE HIGH-TRAFFIC AREA OR ANYWHERE WHERE WE CAN FOCUS ON THE HIGHLIGHT AND THE SUCCESSES OF CROWLEY ISD GRADUATES.
THEIR SUCCESSES WERE PROBABLY MADE POSSIBLE WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF THE GREAT TEACHERS AND COACHES IN OUR DISTRICT.
[12.0 Consent Agenda]
WE ARE AT OUR CONSENT AGENDA THAT INCLUDES 12.1, WHICH IS THE APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA 12.2, THE APPROVAL OF THE NOVEMBER 17TH, 2022 REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES, AND THE DECEMBER 12TH, 2022 CALLED BOARD MEETING MINUTES.12.3 FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, 12.4, BUDGET AMENDMENT, 12.5 READING ACADEMIES BLENDED COHORTS MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING WITH REGION 11.12.6, PURCHASE OF GROUNDS EQUIPMENT. 12.7, THE 2022-2023 COMPENSATION PLAN UPDATE.
BOARD AT THIS TIME, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR DISCUSSIONS FOR THE CONSENT AGENDA? HEARING NONE, IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA?
>> I'LL RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS FOR THE MOTION AND THE SECOND BY TRUSTEE DAVIS.
MY COMPUTER TIMED OUT, BUT WE MOVE TO VOTE BY SHOW OF HANDS, IF THAT'S OKAY.
ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.
OKAY. THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY. THANK YOU.
THIS TIME, WE DO HAVE THE CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ITEMS FOR 13.1,
[13.0 Consideration and Possible Action Item (s)]
THE PROCLAMATION IN MEMORY, A FORMER CROWLEY ISD SUPERINTENDENT, DR. SIDNEY H. POYNTER. DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, BOARD MEMBER ROBINSON WILL BE READING THIS PROCLAMATION.
>> OUR INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT RESOLUTION FOR DR. SIDNEY H. POYNTER,
[02:05:02]
AUGUST 6, 1937 THROUGH NOVEMBER 30TH, 2022.THE TRUE MEANING OF LIFE IS TO PLANT TREES UNDER WHOSE SHADE YOU DO NOT EXPECT TO SIT, NELSON HENDERSON.
WE, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, SUPERINTENDENT, AND STAFF OF CROWLEY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT, ARE SADDENED BY THE PASSING OF DR. SIDNEY H. POYNTER, WHO FAITHFULLY SERVED AS SUPERINTENDENT OF CROWLEY ISD FOR 40 YEARS.
WHILE WE MOURN THIS PROFOUND LOSS, OUR HEARTS ARE FILLED WITH GRATITUDE AND THANKSGIVING FOR DR. POYNTER'S VISIONARY LEADERSHIP AND COUNTLESS CONTRIBUTIONS TO HELP MAKE CROWLEY ISD WHERE IT IS TODAY.
DR. POYNTER JOINED THE CROWLEY INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT FAMILY IN 1959 AS A TEACHER AND BASKETBALL COACH.
HE WAS NAMED SUPERINTENDENT IN 1963 AND HE FAITHFULLY LED THE DISTRICT IN THAT ROLE FOR FOUR DECADES.
WHEN HE RETIRED IN 2003, HE WAS THE LONGEST-SERVING SUPERINTENDENT IN THE SAME DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
AS A CELEBRATION OF DR. POYNTER'S DEDICATION TO CROWLEY ISD THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, PROUDLY NAMED SIDNEY H. POYNTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN HIS HONOR IN 2005.
DR. POYNTER WAS A TRAIL BLAZER WHO PLAYED A KEY ROLE IN LAYING THE FOUNDATION AND OVERSEEING A SIGNIFICANT GROWTH IN CROWLEY ISD.
AS MORE FAMILIES AND BUSINESSES WERE MOVING INTO THE DISTRICT, DR. POYNTER REMAINED FOCUSED ON CERTAIN STUDENTS AND STAFF AND DEVELOPED AN ATMOSPHERE THAT REMAINS TODAY AS WE CONTINUE TO ACT LIKE A FAMILY AND WORK LIKE A TEAM IN CROWLEY ISD.
HIS LEGACY LIVES ON IN THE LIVES OF THE COUNTLESS STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED OUR SCHOOLS IN THE PAST, THE STUDENTS OF TODAY AND THE STUDENTS OF TOMORROW.
NOW, THEREFORE, THE CROWLEY ISD BOARD OF TRUSTEES SO HEREBY PROCLAIM THAT THE DISTRICT WILL OBSERVE A DAY OF LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE IN MEMORY OF DR. SIDNEY H. POYNTER, EVERY YEAR ON THE TUESDAY AFTER LABOR DAY.
IN CLOSING, WE THANK GOD FOR THE PRIVILEGE OF KNOWING AND SHARING THE LIFE OF THIS DEAR EDUCATOR AND ADMINISTRATOR AND WE EXTEND OUR SINCERE SYMPATHIES TO HIS LOVING FAMILY, BE RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION WILL REMAIN IN OUR VOWS AND A COPY WILL BE GIVEN TO THE FAMILY, ISSUE, THIS 15TH DATE, DECEMBER 2022, SIGNED BY ALL THE TRUSTEES AND DR. MCFARLAND.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ROBINSON FOR READING THE PROCLAMATION.
I DON'T KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY FAMILY MEMBERS OR DR. POYNTER HERE, BUT IF THERE ARE ANY, WOULD YOU PLEASE STAND AT THIS TIME TO BE RECOGNIZED? SEEING NONE, I WILL OPEN THE FLOOR TO THE BOARD IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS RELATED TO THE PROCLAMATION OR TO YOUR PERSONAL AFFILIATION WITH DR. POYNTER.
>> I DO. I DIDN'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH DR. POYNTER BECAUSE HE WAS LEAVING AT ALMOST EXACTLY THE SAME TIME I WAS COMING ON BOARD BUT I DID HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE NUMEROUS CONVERSATIONS WITH HIM.
HE HAD A GENUINE CONCERN FOR THE SUCCESS OF CROWLEY ISD, AND IF YOU CAN TALK TO HIM FOR MORE THAN TWO MINUTES, HE WOULD TELL YOU WHAT HIS IDEAS WERE AND WHAT NEEDED TO HAPPEN IN ORDER FOR THE DISTRICT TO CONTINUE ITS SUCCESS.
HE WOULD COME TO BOARD MEETINGS FROM TIME-TO-TIME AND OFFER SUPPORT AND IDEAS OF HOW OR WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO AND ONE QUICK STORY ABOUT DR. POYNTER.
HE HIRED ME TO BE A TEACHER IN CROWLEY ISD.
I THINK IT WAS 1991 AT THIS RACE.
I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE HIM SEVERAL MONTHS AGO [NOISE] AND WE TALKED ABOUT THAT AND HE REMEMBERED THAT.
IT WAS A VERY INTERESTING CONVERSATION THAT WE HAD.
BACK THEN WHEN YOU INTERVIEWED FOR A JOB IN CROWLEY AND PRETTY MUCH ANYWHERE, I INTERVIEWED WITH HIM.
IT WASN'T A PANEL, IT WASN'T A COMMITTEE.
I INTERVIEW WITH HIM AND AT THE END OF THE INTERVIEW, I WALKED OUT OF THE CONTRACT.
THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN SOME CHANGES [LAUGHTER] BUT ANYWAY, I JUST WANTED TO SAY AGAIN THAT HE WAS GENUINELY CONCERNED ABOUT CROWLEY ISD,
[02:10:06]
AND HE WAS ONE OF THE BIGGEST CHEERLEADERS FOR THE DISTRICT.I DID NOT KNOW DR. POYNTER PERSONALLY, BUT IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE OVER THE FIVE YEARS THAT I'VE BEEN ON THE BOARD.
SEEING HIM AT SOME OF OUR KEY EVENTS AND SUPPORTING THE DISTRICT IN SUCH A WAY.
I DO FEEL PRIVILEGED YOU HAVE KNOWN HIM EVEN FOR THAT SHORT PERIOD OF TIME AND SEEING HIS DEDICATION TO THE DISTRICT AND SEE THE PRIDE ON HIS FACE TO SEE WHERE THE DISTRICT HAS COME.
I APPRECIATE HIM AND THE SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO THE DISTRICT.
FOR ANYONE ELSE WHO HAS COMMENTS, I'M SURE THAT WE WILL BE READY TO CELEBRATE IN SEPTEMBER.
I HAVE TO REMEMBER WHEN LABOR DAY IS, WE'VE GOT SOME TIME TO PLAN FOR OUR BIG DAY OF LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT DAY.
ANY OTHER COMMENTS? WE WILL MOVE ON TO AGENDA ITEM 13.2.
FAITH-BASED MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS. THE [OVERLAPPING]
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, POINT OF ORDER.
I THINK I BELIEVE WE NEEDED TO APPROVE A PROCLAMATION.
>> I WOULD RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE PROCLAMATION IN MEMORY A FORMER CROWLEY ISD SUPERINTENDENT, DR. SIDNEY H. POYNTER, AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS FOR THE MOTION. IS THERE A SECOND?
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS, FOR THE SECOND.
CAN WE MOVE TO VOTE, PLEASE? ALL IN FAVOR SHOW OF HANDS.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.
THANK YOU [NOISE] AGENDA ITEM 13.2.
FAITH-BASED MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS.
ABUNDANT IN LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH, FORT WORTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, THE FOUNTAINS FELLOWSHIP CHURCH AND GREAT COMMISSION BAPTIST CHURCH, THE TURNING POINT CHURCH.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, MR. FISHER WILL BE PRESENTING THIS ITEM. MR. FISHER.
>> THANK YOU, DR. MCFARLAND [NOISE] GOOD EVENING MADAM PRESIDENT, DISTINGUISHED [NOISE] MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. MCFARLAND.
I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED TO PRESENT THIS ITEM TONIGHT.
IT IS IN MY MIND, IT IS JUST ANOTHER ONE OF THE EXAMPLES OF OUR MARCH PROUD CRY UNIFIED.
BOARD AS YOU ARE AWARE ACROSS THE COUNTRY, THERE HAS BEEN A RENEWED EMPHASIS ON SAFETY PROTOCOLS AT ALL SCHOOL CAMPUSES.
RECENTLY IN OCTOBER, WE APPROVED A MUTUAL AID AGREEMENT WITH SEVERAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES IN HERE.
AGAIN, THE INTENT OF THESE AGREEMENTS IS TO ENSURE THAT WE ARE EFFICIENTLY FACILITATING AND COORDINATING ALL LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSES TO EMERGENCY CONDITIONS AND SITUATIONS [NOISE] TONIGHT, WE BRING TO YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND POSSIBLE APPROVAL, A SIMILAR AGREEMENT WITH REGARD TO SEVERAL OF OUR FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR DISTRICT.
MORE SPECIFICALLY, THESE FAITH-BASED MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS WILL ALLOW FOR THE RECIPROCITY IN RELOCATION AND OR REUNIFICATION NEEDS THAT ARE REQUIRED IN THE EVENT OF ANY EMERGENCY SITUATION.
WE'RE EXTREMELY APPRECIATIVE OF THESE AGREEMENTS THAT HAVE BEEN PRESENTED TO US BY THESE FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS [NOISE] DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD YOU READ THE LIST, I'LL READ IT AGAIN.
ABUNDANT LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH, FORT WORTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, THE FOUNTAINS FELLOWSHIP CHURCH, GREAT COMMISSION BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TURNING POINT CHURCH.
WE WANT TO THANK THESE FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND ALL OF THE OTHER FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR DISTRICT FOR BEING A PART OF OUR CIS IN THE VILLAGE IN HELPING TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF.
THAT CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION.
IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS, I ANSWERED THOSE NOW.
I KNOW THIS IS THE CURRENT LIST.
IS THE LIST GOING TO GROW, HAVE WE ASK SOME CHURCHES THAT HAVE NOT YET RESPONDED MAYBE, IS IT AN OPPORTUNITY [NOISE] FOR OTHERS TO JOIN?
>> ABSOLUTELY. THIS LIST IS EXPANDING.
THIS IS A RESULT OF SOME OF THE WORK THAT MS. JANICE LAYNE HAS BEEN DOING IN HER WORKING WITH THE FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN OUR DISTRICT.
I AM SURE I ANTICIPATE THAT EVEN MORE CAN COME PART OF THIS [INAUDIBLE].
>> ONE OTHER QUESTION QUICKLY.
I KNOW A COUPLE OF THESE CHURCHES, DO THEY SPAN THE DISTRICT AND WE HAVE REPRESENTATION
[02:15:01]
ACROSS THE DISTRICT AS FAR AS GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATIONS?>> YES, WE ARE ACTUALLY COMPILING A MAP BECAUSE PART OF THE STRATEGIC BENEFIT OF THIS IS THAT MANY OF THESE AFFILIATED FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS ARE LOCATED IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO OUR CAMPUS.
ANY EVENT FOR A NEED TO RELOCATE, IT WOULD BE CONVENIENT.
WE ARE ACTUALLY DEVELOPING A MAP OF ALL FAITH-BASED INSTITUTIONS IN OUR ORGANIZATIONS SO THAT WE CAN SEE THOSE THAT ARE MOST CLOSE IN PROXIMITY TO ALL OF OUR CAMPUSES AND STRATEGICALLY REALIGN OURSELVES THOSE.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, ONE OF THE THINGS I KNOW EARLY IN THE WEEK, WE ALL ARE AWARE OF THE TORNADO WARNING THAT WE WERE UNDER.
AS WE WORK IN OUR [NOISE] MEETING IN OUR ROOM PLANNING, WE WERE GOING THROUGH ASKING A QUESTION, IF SOMETHING HAPPENED AT THIS CAMPUS, WHERE WOULD WE RELOCATE TO? THESE CHURCHES ARE LOCATED IN SPACES WHERE WE KNOW THEY WILL RELOCATE SO WE'LL KEEP WORKING ON THAT MAP.
NOW THESE WILL ALLOW US TO RELOCATE STUDENTS FROM SCHOOL TO A CHURCH IF WE NEED.
>> ANOTHER QUESTION. CHURCHES SELECTED IT WASN'T BASED ON SQUARE FOOTAGE SO WE HAVE SCHOOL THAT NEED TO MOVE, IS THERE A CERTAIN CAPACITY THAT IT NEED THAT BE LEVELED?
>> IT IS BASED ON SQUARE FOOTAGE, EITHER IN THE PARKING LOT OR IN THE FACILITY.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS BECAUSE YOU DON'T REALIZE HOW MUCH YOU MADE IT UNTIL YOU NEED IT.
TO BE PREPARED LIKE THIS IN ADVANCE [NOISE] IS A REALLY GOOD THING.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING FORWARD THINKING.
>> WE JUST WANT TO RECOGNIZE HER TOO FOR HER HARD WORK.
SHE WAS REALLY HARD WITH THE FAITH-BASED COMMITTEE AND THE COMMUNITIES THAT ARE PARTNERS WITH US SO I JUST WANT TO EXTEND A THANK YOU TO HER AS WELL. THANK YOU, MR. FISHER.
>> THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT. IS THERE ANY OTHER QUESTION?
>> NO QUESTION, BUT I JUST WANT TO OFFICIALLY SAY TO OUR FAITH-BASED COMMUNITY AGAIN, THANK YOU.
WE WERE ABLE TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE SEVERAL OF OUR PARTNERS LAST WEEK, I BELIEVE IT WAS.
BUT ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WITNESSED HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THAT INTO REPRESENT THE BOARD WAS ONGOING COMMITMENT THAT OUR FAITH-BASED PARTNERS HAVE TO CROWLEY ISD.
THE RESOUNDING QUESTION WAS, WHAT ELSE CAN WE DO? THE CREATION OF THESE MUTUAL AGREEMENTS JUST AGAIN, IS JUST AN EXCLAMATION POINT ON THEIR ONGOING COMMITMENT TO OUR STUDENTS, OUR FACULTY AND STAFF HERE IN CROWLEY ISD, SO WE ARE CERTAINLY GRATEFUL FOR THEM.
>> TO THE TRUSTEES, ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM YOU? NO? WE'RE GOOD? THANK YOU, MR. FISHER.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, I'D LIKE TO RECOMMEND APPROVAL [NOISE] OF RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH THE FAITH-BASED MUTUAL AID AGREEMENTS WITH THE FOLLOWING FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS.
ABUNDANT LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH, FORT WORTH PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, FOUNTAINS FELLOWSHIP CHURCH, GREAT COMMISSION BAPTIST CHURCH, AND TURNING POINT CHURCH.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS, FOR THE MOTION. DID I HEAR A SECOND?
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ROBINSON FOR THE SECOND AND WE WILL MOVE TO VOTE BY SHOW OF HANDS.
ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY. THANK YOU.
>> NOW, WE'RE AT AGENDA ITEM 13.3 [NOISE] GUARANTEED MAXIMUM PRICE FOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL NUMBER 16, BID PACKAGE NUMBER 2, DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, MR. FISHER WILL ADDRESS THIS ITEM. MR. FISHER.
MADAM BOARD PRESIDENT, DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. MCFARLAND.
ON NOVEMBER THE 17TH [NOISE] WE RECEIVE APPROXIMATELY 154 BIDS RELATIVE TO THE INSTRUCTION OF OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS 16.
AGAIN, THIS IS THE BID PACKAGE NUMBER 2.
BOARD YOU REMEMBER THAT WE APPROVE THE BID PACKAGE NUMBER 1, WHICH WAS THE ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT IN OCTOBER.
THIS CONSTRUCTION PROJECT IS ACTUALLY SCHEDULED FOR 14 MONTHS WITH A FALL 2,024 HOPING, THIS WOULD BE A 70,000 SQUARE FOOT BUILDING THAT HOUSE APPROXIMATELY 400 STUDENTS.
THE BID PRICE CAME IN AT 31,956,869.
IS THERE ANY QUESTIONS? I WILL ANSWER NOW.
[02:20:01]
>> BOARD ANY QUESTIONS? [NOISE] THIS IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
>> I RECOMMEND THE APPROVAL [INAUDIBLE] NUMBER 16 BID PACKAGE NUMBER 2 AS PRESENTED.
>> IT'S BEEN MOVED BY TRUSTEE ROBINSON. IS THERE A SECOND?
ALL IN FAVOR, PLEASE RAISE YOUR HAND.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.
THANK YOU. WE HAVE SOME FUTURE ACTION ITEMS.
[14.0 Future Action Item(s)]
THE FIRST AGENDA ITEM IS 14.1.[NOISE] MIDDLE SCHOOL CHROMEBOOK CART PURCHASE DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS SPECIFIC HEAT BEARS INTERESTS AS I THINK.
>> I'M DR. CARLIN. GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS.
TONIGHT, I'M JUST HERE TO GIVE YOU A BRIEF OVERVIEW OF A RESTRUCTURING OF OUR CHROMEBOOK 1:1 AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, AS WELL AS INFORMATION ABOUT OUR RFP AND THOSE DEVICES.
OUR CURRENT MIDDLE SCHOOL CHROMEBOOKS STRUCTURE IS 1:1.
EACH STUDENT HAS THEIR OWN DEVICE, AND MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TAKE THEIR DEVICES HOME WITH THEM EACH DAY.
PRIOR TO THE PANDEMIC STARTING IN THE 2019 SCHOOL YEAR, WE HAD ACTUALLY SHIFTED TO A CARTS IN THE CLASSROOM MODEL OF 1:1.
BUT IN SPRING 2020 WITH THE PANDEMIC, WE TOOK THOSE CARTS APART AND WE ISSUED INDIVIDUAL DEVICES TO STUDENTS AND THEN THROUGH MULTIPLE YEARS OF VIRTUAL SCHOOL, STUDENTS CONTINUE TO TAKE THOSE DEVICES HOME.
THAT'S THE MODEL THAT WE'VE KEPT IN PLACE UNTIL TODAY.
WE, OF COURSE, ARE ALWAYS EVALUATING OUR SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES.
WHEN LOOKING INTO OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL CHROMEBOOK MODEL, WE HAD A FEW FINDINGS.
ONE OF FEWER THAN 75 PERCENT OF OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE BRINGING THEIR DEVICES TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY.
OBVIOUSLY, IF YOU'RE A TEACHER IN A CLASSROOM THAT MAKES IT VERY CHALLENGING TO PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION.
OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS MAKE UP 22 PERCENT OF OUR STUDENT POPULATION, BUT THEY ACCOUNT FOR NEARLY 50 PERCENT OF OUR BROKEN-IMAGE CHROMEBOOK TICKETS.
ALSO, MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUS LEADERSHIP SURVEY, THIS IS PRINCIPLES, APS AND INSTRUCTIONAL COACHES, BASED ON THOSE FIRST TWO BULLET POINTS, INDICATES A STRONG PREFERENCE FOR A RETURN TO IN-CLASS 1:1 DEVICES.
MOVING FORWARD, WE ARE GOING TO BE SHIFTING BACK TO OUR PRE-PANDEMIC STRUCTURE FOR 1:1 CHROMEBOOKS IN THE CLASSROOM.
WHAT WE'LL BE DOING IS INITIALLY A 1:2 RATIO OF CHROMEBOOK CARTS SO THAT'S ONE CHROMEBOOK CART FOR EVERY TWO, FOUR TEACHERS.
ADDITIONALLY, WE WILL HAVE TWO CHROMEBOOK CARTS FROM THE MIDDLE SCHOOL LIBRARY FOR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO CHECK OUT AS NEEDED.
THE WAY THIS WILL WORK FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, THIS WILL REALLY BE A TRANSITION HERE.
ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO TAKE HOME THEIR DEVICES FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR.
BUT AT THE SAME TIME IN THE SPRING, WE WILL BE ADDING CARTS INTO THE CLASSROOM.
IN THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR, WHICH IS '23, '24, WE WILL MOVE FULLY TWO CARTS IN CLASSROOMS WITH THOSE DEVICES AVAILABLE FOR CHECKOUT.
THE DEVICES THAT WERE TAKEN HOME THIS YEAR WILL BE TAKEN UP AND THERE'LL BE REDISTRIBUTED TO 39 ADDITIONAL PARTS AND PUT BACK IN MIDDLE SCHOOL CLASSROOMS SO THAT WILL MAKE OUR 1:2 RATIO EVEN BETTER IN TERMS OF CARTS TO TEACHERS.. ANY REMAINING DEVICES WILL BE MOVED TO THE HIGH SCHOOL AND THAT WILL BE FOR NEW STUDENTS AND STUDENTS WITH BROKEN DEVICES.
OUR RATIONALE FOR THIS, LIKE I SHARED WITH YOU ON MONDAY NIGHT, OUR STAAR TESTING IS MOVING ENTIRELY ONLINE.
IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT STUDENTS HAVE DEVICES ON CANVAS ABLE TO TEST.
THAT ALSO INCLUDES OUR LOCAL ASSESSMENTS LIKE BENCHMARK TESTING.
WE USE ADAPTIVE SOFTWARE PROGRAMS TO HELP CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS AND ALSO TO ADDRESS UNFINISHED LEARNING, THOSE REQUIRED DEVICES.
OBVIOUSLY, WE WANT THOSE AVAILABLE FOR DAILY INSTRUCTION.
WE CLEARLY WANT TO HAVE DEVICES AVAILABLE FOR CHECKOUT FOR STUDENTS WHO NEED THEM.
OF COURSE, YOU SAW THAT 22 PERCENT OF THE POPULATION IN 50 PERCENT OF THE TICKETS NUMBER, ONE OF OUR GOALS HERE IS TO REDUCE BREAKAGE, FINES, AND FEES AT MIDDLE SCHOOL.
WE IMPLEMENTED A SIMILAR PROCESS THAT OUR ELEMENTARY CAMPUSES OVER THIS LAST YEAR AND SAW A SIGNIFICANT DECREASE IN TICKETS EVOLUTION.
WE HAVE ADVERTISED AN RFP FOR THIS PURCHASE.
YOU CAN SEE THAT TIMELINE HERE, AND THIS WILL BE BROUGHT BACK AS AN ACTION ITEM AT THE JANUARY MEETING.
I'D BE HAPPY TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE.
>> I HAVE A QUESTION AND YOU PROBABLY SHARED THIS.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE I UNDERSTAND BECAUSE I GET THE CLASSROOM VERSION CHECKING OUT AND I HAVE A QUESTION ABOUT THAT IN JUST A SECOND.
BUT FOR STUDENTS THAT HAVE HOMEWORK, DID I MISS THAT PROCESS, WHAT DO THEY DO WHEN THEY'RE AT HOME IF THEY HAVE
[02:25:01]
THE CHROMEBOOKS IN THE CLASSROOM? YES, GO AHEAD.>> THAT IS THE REASONING BEHIND THOSE PARTS IN THE LIBRARY BEING AVAILABLE FOR CHECKOUT FOR ANY STUDENT'S ASSIGNMENT.
>> OKAY. LET'S PRINT THEM, AND THERE'S NO RESTRICTION OR WHEN THEY CHECK IT OUT OR IS IT DAILY THEY CHECKED IT BACK IN?
>> WE'LL SET THE CHECKOUT PERIOD JUST LIKE WE WOULD WITH ANY OTHER LIBRARY.
>> MY OTHER QUESTION IS RELATED TO WHEN THEY CHECK OUT CHROMEBOOKS IN THE CLASSROOM, THE DAY OF CLASS, HOW MUCH TIME IS A LOT, HOW DOES THAT PROCESS LOOK LIKE?
>> THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION. WE HAVE MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHERS NOW WHO DO HAVE CARTS IN THEIR CLASSROOM FOR VARIOUS REASONS AND THEY ARE HIGHLY EFFICIENT.
AS STUDENTS COME IN THE CLASSROOM, THEY PASSED BY THE CHROMEBOOK CART.
THEY GET THEIR DEVICE FOR THE DAY AND THEY ARE WORKING WITHIN ABOUT 45 SECONDS.
AT THE END OF THE DAY, OUR TEACHERS HAVE QUESTIONS [NOISE].
IT'S VERY SIMILAR TO HOW YOU SHARPEN A PENCIL IN THE CLASSROOM WHEN YOU HAVE A MIDDLE SCHOOLERS IN THERE.
THE SIMILAR PROCESSES APPLY ALSO.
>> THANK YOU. BUT MR. KEITH, TO PRESENT MAYFIELD'S QUESTION.
IF THE PROGRAM IS GOING TO BE ONE CART PER TWO CLASSROOMS, HOW DOES THIS SYSTEM CONTINUE TO WORK EFFICIENTLY IF TWO CLASSROOMS, TWO TEACHERS HAVING TO SHARE ONE CART?
>> OUR INITIAL RATIO IS 1:2, AND WE'VE ACTUALLY BEEN ABLE TO INCREASE THAT NUMBER OF A BIT WITHIN OUR BUDGET.
AS WE'RE RETURNING THOSE DEVICES AND PUTTING THOSE BACK INTO CARTS FOR THE '23, '24 SCHOOL YEAR, THAT WILL ADD AN ADDITIONAL 10 CARTS EACH OF THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUSES.
ONE OF THE KEY THINGS THAT OUR CANVAS DOES DO REALLY WELL, EVEN THOUGH WE DISTRIBUTE THEM, THAT'S OUR FORMULA FOR DISTRIBUTING, IS JUST 1:2.
THEY ARE FREE TO MOVE THOSE ANYWHERE.
TYPICALLY, WHAT WE SEE IS, LIKE YOUR MATH DEPARTMENT WILL NEED THEM FOR LESSONS ON MONDAY AND TUESDAY SO THEY SHOULD THOSE PARTS TO THE MATH DEPARTMENT.
WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY THEY MAY GO TO THE DEALER APARTMENTS.
THEY'RE VERY FLEXIBLE WITHIN THE BUILDING.
>> I HAVE A QUESTION. TO THAT POINT, IF THERE'S CONCERN ABOUT 1:2 RATIO, WHEN THE STUDENTS DON'T BRING THEM BACK TO CLASS AT ALL, WHAT ARE THE TEACHERS HAVING TO DO?
>> THAT IS EXACTLY THE REASON BEHIND THIS MOVE BECAUSE IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO PLAN FOR INSTRUCTION WHEN YOU HAVE ONLY 50-75 PERCENT OF YOUR STUDENTS BRINGING THEIR DEVICES BACK ON ANY GIVEN DAY.
IT DOES CREATE CHALLENGES IN THE CLASSROOM, WHICH IS EXACTLY WHAT WE ARE TRYING TO ADDRESS.
>> OKAY YOU MAY SAY THAT BUT LET ME SEE. BUT ISN'T THAT THE CLARITY, WHEN ARE WE STARTING THIS, AS IN, WE'RE GOING TO FINISH THIS SCHOOL YEAR OR THIS CALENDAR YEAR?
>> THIS WILL OFTEN GO BACK TO THAT TIMELINE.
THIS WILL COME BACK TO THE BOARD FOR ACTION ON JANUARY 12TH.
WORKING WITH MR. CAMPBELL AND HIS TEAM, OUR GOAL IS TO HAVE THE CARTS WITHIN THE DISTRICT WITHIN 6-8 WEEKS, WHICH GETS THEM HERE IN TIME FOR STAR TESTING AT THE END OF APRIL.
DURING THAT ENTIRE TIME WHERE WE'RE MOVING THE NEW CARTS INTO THE BUILDING, STUDENTS WILL CONTINUE TO BRING THEIR DEVICES HOME AND BRING THEM BACK EVERY DAY.
WE'LL FULLY TRANSITION TO THAT CARTS MODEL IN THE '23, '24 SCHOOL YEAR. [NOISE]
>> THANK YOU. I DON'T HAVE A QUESTION.
I JUST HAD AN OBSERVATION THINKING ABOUT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS, WHICH IS A BIG FOCUS FOR US.
THE OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, THE CORRELATION WITH THAT, AND THIS CHROMEBOOK, THOSE STATISTICS THAT YOU'VE MENTIONED, I'M TRYING TO MAKE IT MAKE SENSE IN MY HEAD THAT CORRELATION WITH WHERE THOSE BIG GAPS ARE AND THIS LACK OF CHROMEBOOK ACTIVITY THAT THEY HAVE.
THE ONLY QUESTION I HAVE IS THEY'RE NOT BRINGING THE DAILY, BUT THAT'S NOT THE SAME NUMBER AS THEM NOT HAVING THEM AT ALL.
>>OKAY. IT'S JUST NOT CONSISTENT.
>>EXACTLY. REALLY THAT 75 PERCENT NUMBER COMES FROM US GOING TO MIDDLE SCHOOL CAMPUSES, GOING TO EVERY CLASSROOM SAYING PLEASE OPEN YOUR BACKPACKS, PULL OUT YOUR SCHOOL ISSUED DEVICE, AND SHOW US THAT YOU HAVE IT.
THAT'S WHERE THAT 75 PERCENT NUMBER COMES FROM.
BUT THOSE ARE STUDENTS WHO HAVE DEVICES AND SHOULD BE REMAINING.
I BELIEVE THIS IS GOING TO BE THE THIRD PURCHASE
[02:30:02]
OF CHROMEBOOKS THAT WE'VE DONE THIS YEAR.WE SEEM TO BE SPENDING A LOT ON TECHNOLOGY.
MY ONLY CONCERN IS THAT WE'D BE GOOD STEWARDS OF IT.
BECAUSE IT SEEMS ALMOST EVERY MONTH, FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MONTHS, THERE'S BEEN AN ADDITIONAL CHROMEBOOK PURCHASED.
I BELIEVE WE JUST PURCHASED 1,200 OF THEM, IF I'M NOT MISTAKEN, OVER THE LAST MONTH.
THIS IS A LARGE INVESTMENT THAT WE ARE CONTINUING TO MAKE, SO I JUST WANT TO EMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE OF JUST BEING GOOD STEWARDS OF THAT; BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE ACCESS TO THE TECHNOLOGIES AND WHATNOT.
BUT I ALSO WANT TO JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE BEING GOOD STEWARDS. THANK YOU.
>> THOSE PURCHASES TO YOUR POINT, THEY HAVE BEEN FOR DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS LIKE RIGHT NOW, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL.
ARE THERE OTHER AGE GROUPS OR GRADE GROUPS THAT YOU'VE MADE PURCHASES FOR? IS THIS JUST A CYCLE TO GET THROUGH THOSE?
>> GOING BACK TO PREPRINT AND PANDEMIC, THE PRE-PANDEMIC MODEL WILL HELP WITH THAT.
BECAUSE NOW WE'RE NOT GETTING THEM BACK.
DOES THAT ACCOUNT FOR A LOT OF THE PURCHASES WE PURCHASE BECAUSE STUDENTS AREN'T RETURNING THEM?
>>DEFINITELY BY THIS SHIFT TO HAVING CARDS IN THE CLASSROOM WE MAINTAIN MORE THAN THE DISTRICT INVENTORY.
>> I WAS GOING TO SAY SOMETHING [INAUDIBLE] WHEN I WAS A MIDDLE SCHOOL TEACHER WE DID HAVE ONE CARD FOR TWO TEACHERS.
THAT'S THE MATH TEACHER I SHARED WITH THE ELEARNING.
MR. KEITH SAID WHEN I WAS USING IT FOR A MATH DAY, I'LL HAVE THE CARD BUT ALSO NUMBER MY CARD AND ASSIGNMENT OF STUDENTS.
I HAD 86 PERIODS AND EACH CLASS PERIOD EVERY STUDENT HAD A NUMBER, SO I KNEW ANDREW ROBINSON YOU WERE NUMBER 18, IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO COMPUTER 18, WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON TO USE IT? SO I WENT TO THE OTHER TEACHERS, AND I WAS LIKE, HEY, PAY ATTENTION TO THESE NUMBERS.
[LAUGHTER] NOT ONLY DID STUDENTS HAVE TO BE GOOD STEWARDS, BUT TEACHERS ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT STUDENTS ARE NOT LEAVING HEADPHONES ON THE FLOOR, AND THEIR CHROMEBOOKS ON THE FLOOR AND THEIR CHARGERS.
EVERY CLASSROOM TEACHER MONITORS THE LICENSE LIKE OTHER TEACHERS.
THAT ALSO IMPACTS WHETHER STUDENTS IN THE NEXT PERIOD OR THE NEXT CLASS CAN USE THE DEVICE IF THEY ARE NOT WELL MAINTAINED EVEN IN THE CLASSROOM.
IT ISN'T EASY, IT MAY SEEM LIKE, BUT YOU'RE ONLY HAVING ONE DEVICE SHARE, BUT YOU'RE NOT USING THEM EVERY DAY, ALL DAY, IT ISN'T EASY TO MAINTAIN.
WITH THE MAJOR INVESTMENT THAT WE'VE MADE THIS YEAR WITH CHROMEBOOKS, EVERY CHROMEBOOK HAS A SHELF LIFE OR A USABILITY PERIOD.
I WOULD HOPE TO SEE A PLAN BECAUSE THAT MEANS THAT ALL OF THESE CHROMEBOOKS THAT WE'VE PURCHASED THIS YEAR ARE GOING TO BE PHASED OUT AT THE SAME TIME.
IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE HAVING AGAIN, ANOTHER SINGLE BIG EXPENSE ON THESE CHROMEBOOKS, UNLESS WE PROACTIVELY GO INTO THIS AS TO HOW WE'RE GOING TO MAINTAIN THESE DEVICES.
I WOULD LOVE TO SEE WHAT THAT PLAN LOOKS LIKE IN SUBSEQUENT YEARS SO THAT THERE AGAIN, IS PHASED REPLACEMENT AND NOT SUCH A MAJOR UNDERTAKING, JUST AT ONE TIME.
>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR QUESTIONS AND COMMENTS AND THANK YOU, MR. KEITH, FOR THE PRESENTATION.
>> OUR NEXT ITEM IS THE AGENDA ITEM 14.2 ON MAY 6, 2023 BOARD OF TRUSTEES ELECTION IN THE ORDER OF ELECTION, DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE HAVE MRS MONTAVO APPEARING TO PRESENT THIS ITEM.
>> [INAUDIBLE] ELECTION, ORDER OF ELECTION IN LINE WITH GOAL ONE, THRIVING STUDENTS, GOAL TWO, ENGAGE COMMUNITY, GOAL THREE, EMPOWER STAFF.
[02:35:04]

WE DROVE THROUGH SEVERAL NEIGHBORHOODS, A LOT OF THE GROWTH THAT'S OCCURRING IN OUR COMMUNITY, WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE THAT OUR LONG-RANGE FACILITY COMMITTEE HAD A GOOD UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT WAS GOING ON THE GROUND IN CROWLEY ISD BOUND.
WE RETURNED IN NOVEMBER 15TH, AND WE WENT THROUGH OUR MASTER FACILITY PLAN PROJECT PRIORITIES.
THE DISTRICT HAD LISTED A SERIES OF PRIORITIES, COMMITTEE WITH WHO THOSE PRIORITIES AND THOSE PRIORITIES TO THEM AS QUESTIONS MADE ADDITION, PROVIDED INPUT.
THEN IN DECEMBER, LAST WEEK OR DECEMBER 6 WEEK BEFORE LAST, WE ACTUALLY HAVE LISTEN TO OUR FINANCIAL ADVISOR WHO TALKED ABOUT THE ABILITY TO AUTHORIZE AND ISSUE BONDS WITHIN OUR DISTRICT.
CURRENTLY, WE ARE PREPARING A LIST OF POSSIBLE PROJECTS.
THE FACILITY COMMITTEE WILL BE REVIEWING THOSE PROJECTS AND THEY'LL BE MAKING A REPORT TO YOU IN THE MONTH OF JANUARY.
