>> YES. [APPLAUSE] ALWAYS GOOD TO GET MONEY FOR SCHOOL FOR SURE. THANK YOU.
AWESOME. WE ARE GOING TO THANK YOU, BOARD.
[4.0 Superintendent Report]
WE'RE GOING TO MOVE RIGHT INTO AGENDA ITEM 4.0, WHICH IS THE SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. DR. MCFARLAND?>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, I JUST WANT TO START OFF JUST BY SAYING THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS, BUT ALSO I WANT TO THANK YOU JUST FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP.
OUR MISSION IN CROWLEY ISD IS TO ENSURE THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION SO THEY CAN ACHIEVE THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
BUT AS A SCHOOL BOARD, ONE OF YOUR PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES IS TO SET THE VISION AND THE DIRECTION OF THE DISTRICT.
I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU BOARD FOR SETTING THE DIRECTION TO BE EXCELLENT.
YOUR COMMENTS, YOUR QUESTIONING, YOUR LEADERSHIP, YOUR PUSHING IS ALLOWING US TO HIT THAT MARK.
YOU ALSO HAVE GIVEN US AN EXPECTATION TO ADVOCATE NOT ONLY LOCALLY, BUT ALSO IN AUSTIN, AND SO WE DEFINITELY THANK YOU FOR THAT.
I ALSO THANK YOU FOR JUST SUPPORTING THE DISTRICT AND SUPPORTING DISTRICT PERSONNEL WHEN WE HAVE TO TAKE STANCES THAT ARE NOT ALWAYS POPULAR.
AS YOU KNOW, WE WERE ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SEVEN DISTRICTS IN THE STATE THAT BROUGHT THE LAWSUIT AGAINST THE COMMISSIONER DUE TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM THAT WAS NOT ACCORDING TO THE LAW.
WE STARTED OFF AND SEVEN DISTRICTS ENDED UP OVER 500 DISTRICTS NOW.
THE COURT CASE HAS BEEN HEARD.
THE JUDGE, ABOUT 15 MINUTES AGO, ISSUED HER ORDER, AND SHE RULED IN FAVOR OF CROWLEY ISD AND THE OTHER DISTRICT THAT THEY BROUGHT THEIR CONTROVERSY.
[APPLAUSE] THE REALITY IS I JUST WANT TO READ BRIEFLY WHAT THE AUTHOR SAID.
IT IS THEREFORE AUDIT THAT THE DEFENDANT, IN HIS OFFICIAL CAPACITY, AND HIS AGENTS AND EMPLOYEES AND DESIGNEES WHO ARE ACTING ON HIS BEHALF WERE PROHIBITED FROM ASSIGNING AN E2F PERFORMANCE RATING FOR THE '22, '23 SCHOOL YEAR UNTIL THE COURT ISSUES A FINAL JUDGMENT.
NOW, THIS WAS A TEMPORARY INJUNCTION,
[00:15:01]
WHICH MEANS IT GIVES A CHANCE FOR THE ACTUAL COURT TO HEAR IT HOPEFULLY FURTHER ON DOWN THE LINE.BUT WHAT THE JUDGE FOUND WAS THAT THE PLAINTIFFS, WHO WE WERE THE PLAINTIFFS, THAT WE SHOWED A PROBABLE CAUSE IN THAT THE COMMISSIONER ACTED OUTSIDE OF HIS OFFICIAL CAPACITY, AND WAS NOT AUTHORIZED TO ASSIGN A PERFORMANCE RATINGS FOR THIS YEAR BECAUSE HE DID NOT FOLLOW THE LAW.
I CAN JUST SAY PUBLICLY, THE COMMISSIONER IS A GOOD FRIEND.
BUT THE REALITY IS, IN OUR COUNTRY AND IN OUR SOCIETY, IF THINGS ARE NOT RIGHT, THERE'S A WAY TO ADDRESS IT.
WE ADDRESS IT BY ADVOCACY ABOUT GOING INTO THE LAW, AND WE CAME OUT ON THE RIGHT SIDE AT THIS POINT.
THE COURT ALSO FINDS THAT THE PLAINTIFFS HAVE MADE A SUFFICIENT SHOWING WHICH WILL BE OUR DISTRICTS, THAT THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE E2F ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM IS UNLAWFUL, AND WOULD VIOLATE TEXAS LAW.
THEY ALSO FOUND THAT THE COMMISSIONER IS ENJOINED FROM ASSIGNING ANY PERFORMANCE RATING FOR THIS YEAR UNTIL MORE INFORMATION IS DETERMINED ON THE LEGALITY AND HIS STANDING.
WE'RE DEFINITELY ARE PROUD OF THE FACT THAT AT LEAST THE JUDGE IS UNDERSTANDING THE MERIT OF OUR CASE, AND HAS TAKEN A STEP BACK TO LOOK AT REALLY WHAT WE'RE SAYING.
THEY BELIEVE OUR ARGUMENT HAS MERIT BUT THERE IS A TEMPORARY INJUNCTION RIGHT NOW THE ISSUE.
WE FULLY ANTICIPATE THEM TO POSSIBLY APPEAL, BUT WHAT WE KNOW IS IN THE SHORT-TERM, WE WILL BE ABLE TO MAINTAIN THE ACCOUNTABILITY STANDARD THAT WE HAD IN THE PRIOR YEAR.
NOT ONLY WILL WE BE ABLE TO DO THAT, BUT ALL 1,200 DISTRICTS IN THE STATE WILL BENEFIT FROM THE ACTIONS THAT YOU ALL HAVE ALLOWED US TO TAKE.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT. [APPLAUSE].
I KNOW THAT MY MOM IS A RETIRED TEACHER.
WE HAVE MANY RETIRED TEACHERS AROUND.
I HAD OPPORTUNITY THIS WEEKEND TO GO TO A BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR MY AUNT AND THE RETIRED TEACHERS CORNER ME IN JASMINE. THEY TOLD ME, LOOK.
I ASKED THEM ALL WHY DID THEY HAVE THIS PROPOSITION 9 IN SIGN IN THEIR YARD? THEY TOLD ME, WHEN YOU GET ON THE MIC AGAIN, YOU BETTER TELL EVERYBODY THAT PROPOSITION 9 IS ACTUALLY A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT WILL AUTHORIZE THE STATE TO ACTUALLY GIVE OUR RETIRED TEACHERS A RAISE.
TO MY MOM AND TO MS. EMILY, AND ALL THE REST OF THEM, I AM ADVOCATING THAT WE VOTE IN SUPPORT OF PROPOSITION 9 TO SUPPORT RETIRED TEACHERS OF THE EARLY VOTING HAS STARTED, AND I JUST ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GO OUT AND VOTE FOR PROPOSITION 9 ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT.
PROPOSITION 8 DEALS WITH BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY.
IN MANY AREAS, NOT EVERYONE HAS INTERNET CONNECTION THAT IS APPROPRIATE, AND SO IN SOME OF OUR RURAL AREAS, INTERNET CONNECTIVITY IS A CHALLENGE.
WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO GO OUT READ ABOUT THE PROPOSITION.
THERE ARE 14 PROPOSITIONS, BUT I ENCOURAGE YOU TO LOOK CLOSELY AT PROPOSITION 8 AND 9.
THEY HAVE A DIRECT IMPACT ON EDUCATION, DIRECT IMPACT ON OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITIES.
WE ENCOURAGE YOU TO VOTE FOR THOSE IF YOU GET A CHANCE.
THEN THE LAST THING BOARD, I HAVE A COPY AND I WON'T GO THROUGH IT IN DETAIL.
BUT THE LAST BOARD MEETING, WE TALKED ABOUT THE SCHOOL QUALITY REPORT.
WE MADE MODIFICATIONS TO THE SCHOOL QUALITY REPORT.
ALL YOU ALL HAVE A PACKET, AND ACTUALLY I'LL LEAVE THOSE WITH YOU, GIVE YOU A CHANCE TO LOOK AT THE CHANGES, AND THEN IF YOU HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL MODIFICATIONS, I WILL DEFINITELY COLLECT THOSE FROM YOU WITHIN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS.
THANK YOU, BOARD. THAT'S ALL I HAVE FOR MY REPORT.
ARE THERE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS FOR DR. MCFARLAND IN HIS REPORT? AWESOME. GOOD NEWS.
YES, I WAS ALSO TOLD BY MY MOM ABOUT PROPOSITION 9. IT'S GOOD TO KNOW THAT.
THEN THANK YOU FOR SHARING ABOUT PROPOSITION 8 AS WELL.
EARLY VOTING AS DR. MCFARLAND MENTIONED IS GOING ON NOW.
IF YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO VOTE THIS WEEK, YOU HAVE TOMORROW, AND IS IT ALSO SATURDAY?
>> THROUGH NOVEMBER 3RD. THERE'S ACTUALLY A LOT OF DAYS.
I'M GOING TOMORROW BECAUSE CANCELED THE TRIP.
I'M GOING TO GET TO GO TOMORROW. I'M SORRY.
>> NEXT WEEK POLLS ARE OPEN SEVEN TO SEVEN.
>> NEXT WEEK POLLS ARE OPEN SEVEN TO SEVEN.
GO VOTE. YOU HEARD ABOUT THE PROPOSITION.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT COMMUNITY.

AND WE KNOW THAT THIS IS A VERY SPECIAL GROUP OF LEADERS HERE IN OUR COMMUNITY.
THESE ARE DEDICATED INDIVIDUALS AND THEY PLAY A PIVOTAL ROLE IN SHAPING OUR STUDENTS FUTURES AND THE TRAJECTORY OF OUR ENTIRE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM.
AND THIS IS JUST AN OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO PAUSE AND SAY THANK YOU TO THEM FOR THEIR UNWAVERING DEDICATION, THEIR EXCEPTIONAL LEADERSHIP.

SO WE DO APPRECIATE THEM. SO THANK YOU.
BOARD, ARE THERE ANY OTHER COMMENTS? WELL, THANK YOU, MR. KIRCHNER.
[6.0 Report Item(s) / Presentation(s)]
AGENDA ITEM 6.1, THE PRELIMINARY RESULTS FROM THE FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS.WITH FIRST THE ACRONYM, DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, MR. FISCHER IS HERE PREPARED TO ADDRESS THIS ITEM. MR. FISCHER.
>> THANK YOU, SIR. GOOD EVENING, MADAM BOARD PRESIDENT, DISTINGUISHED MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.
I AM EXTREMELY EXCITED TONIGHT.
I KNOW THAT WE'RE IN THE CELEBRATORY MODE AND WE HAVE GOOD REASON TO BE IN CROWLEY ISD, MANY THINGS, MANY GREAT THINGS ARE GOING ON IN CROWLEY ISD.
[00:40:03]
AND TONIGHT, BOARD, I WANT YOU GUYS TO CELEBRATE WITH US, THE FINANCE DEPARTMENT.SEVERAL MONTHS AGO I BROUGHT TO YOU THE DREAM TEAM, BUT TONIGHT I BRING TO YOU THAT A TEAM.
A TEAM WOULD YOU STAND UP, PLEASE? [APPLAUSE] SO, BOARD, THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS.
[APPLAUSE] BOARD, THANK YOU, DR. MCFARLAND.
[LAUGHTER] [APPLAUSE] THEY DID NOT WANT TO DO THIS.
AS I INTRODUCED THIS FINANCE TEAM, I WANT TO INTRODUCE THEM WITH THEIR NICKNAMES THAT I HAVE AFFECTIONATELY CALL THEM.
THIS IS MITCHELL, PROFESSOR NAISSY, THE PURCHASING IS OUR [INAUDIBLE].
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR [INAUDIBLE] [BACKGROUND]. SO, BOARD, YOU MAY BE WANTING TO KNOW WHY I CALL THEM THE A TEAM. I HAVE AN ANSWER.
THE FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS IS KNOWN AS THE FIRST.
THAT ACRONYM IS CALLED THE FIRST RATING SYSTEM.
IT IS ESSENTIALLY VERY SIMILAR TO THE ACADEMIC RATING SYSTEM THAT THE STATE OF TEXAS USES TO ASSESS SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN THE STATE.
IT EXPANDS THE PUBLIC EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY SYSTEM IN TEXAS TO INCLUDE FINANCIAL SERVICES NOW.
PROVIDES ADDITIONAL TRANSPARENCY FOR PUBLIC EDUCATION AND FINANCE, AND IT ENCOURAGES MEANINGFUL FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT AND THE CRITERIA ARE EVALUATED THREE YEARS.
THESE RATINGS ARE APPLICABLE TO THE AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS OF THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
SO EACH PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF TEXAS IS RATED BASED UPON 20 INDICATORS, 16 OF WHICH ARE ACTUALLY PROVIDED A RATING.
THE RATING SCALE, YOU SEE HERE, THE A TEAM, SUPERIOR ACHIEVEMENT IS THE RATING THAT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT CROWLEY ISD, HAS RECEIVED FOR 21/22 AUDITED FINANCIAL STATEMENTS.
THIS SYSTEM AGAIN HAS 16 METRICS THAT HAVE BEEN RATED THIS YEAR.
AND THEY MEASURE COMPLIANCE, LIQUIDITY, AND SOLVENCY.
AND THIS YEAR, OUR DISTRICT SCORED 94 POINTS OUT OF THE MAXIMUM OF 100.
[APPLAUSE] WHAT I WANTED TO DO WAS JUST WALK THE BOARD THROUGH SEVERAL OF THE INDICATORS WHERE WE ACTUALLY GAINED POINTS THIS YEAR.
I THINK THOSE ARE SIGNIFICANT AND I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THE BOARD IS AWARE OF THOSE INDICATORS.
WE TALKED ABOUT THE NUMBER OF DAYS CASH ON HAND AND CURRENT INVESTMENTS IN THE GENERAL FUND WERE SIGNIFICANT AND SUFFICIENT ENOUGH TO COVER OPERATING EXPENDITURE.
SORRY ABOUT THAT. WE ACTUALLY HAD 93.19 DAYS OF RESERVES OF CASH ON HAND.
LAST YEAR WE HAD EIGHT POINTS.
THIS SHOULD WE SCORED A PERFECT 10.
ABSOLUTELY. THE NEXT INDICATOR, JAY, IS INDICATOR NUMBER 11, WAS THE RATIO OF OUR LONG-TERM LIABILITIES TO TOTAL ASSETS SUFFICIENT TO SUPPORT OUR LONG-TERM SOLVENCY.
SOLVENCY BEING OUR ABILITY TO PAY OUT LONG-TERM DEBT.
THEY HAD A CAVEAT THIS YEAR IN THIS RATING.
LAST YEAR WE ONLY SCORED FOUR.
BUT THIS YEAR WE SCORED A PERFECT 10.
BECAUSE OF THE GROWTH IN OUR STUDENT MEMBERSHIP.
THE CAVEAT WAS, DID YOU HAVE A CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP THAT WAS GREATER THAN OR EQUAL TO 7% OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS? OR DID YOU HAVE GROWTH OF AT LEAST
[00:45:04]
1,000 STUDENTS AND MEMBERSHIP OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS? GUESS WHAT BOARD? WE SCORED 10 BECAUSE WE HAD GROWTH OF 1,024 STUDENTS OVER THE PAST FIVE YEARS.AWESOME. THERE WAS ONE GOAL, ONE INDICATOR WHERE WE ACTUALLY LOST POINTS AND WE'RE WORKING ON THIS GOAL RIGHT NOW.
THE CORRELATION BETWEEN OUR FUTURE DEBT REQUIREMENTS AND THE DISTRICT'S ASSESSED VALUE AND BOARD YOU UNDERSTAND WE'VE GONE OUT FOR A BOND.
WHAT WE KNOW IS THAT OUR PROPERTY VALUES CONTINUE TO RISE SO WE KNOW THAT THIS METRIC MAY BE A CHALLENGE GOING FORWARD, BUT WE HAVE TO DO WHAT WE HAVE TO DO FOR THE STUDENTS IN CROWLEY ISD.
THE OTHER REASON THIS TEAM IS CALLED THE A-TEAM IS IT'S BEEN RECOGNIZED BY THE GOVERNMENT FINANCE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION, WHICH IS A NATIONAL ORGANIZATION.
TWENTY-THOUSAND MEMBERS, SAID THAT CROWLEY ISD DESERVED THE CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT IN EXCELLENCE FOR FINANCIAL REPORTING BECAUSE OF OUR ANNUAL FINANCIAL REPORT SUBMISSION.
I'M SO PROUD. [APPLAUSE] WELL BEFORE I CONCLUDE MY PRESENTATION.
HERE IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE RECOGNIZE.
CROWLEY PRIDE AS WE GO FORWARD IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, WE ACT LIKE A FAMILY, WE WORK LIKE A TEAM, BUT OUR TRADITION IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AS WELL.
ONE OF THE MEMBERS THAT DID NOT WALK UP TONIGHT TO BE RECOGNIZED WAS OUR FORMER CFO STACEY ADRIAN.
>> SHE HAS HELPED US TO DEVELOP THE SYSTEMS THAT WE PUT IN PLACE TO MAKE SURE THAT WE COULD EARN AN A IN OUR FINANCIAL INTEGRITY RATING SYSTEM OF TEXAS.
>> MR. FISHER, WHAT'S HER NICKNAME?
HER NICKNAME IS STACE. [APPLAUSE]
>> BOARD, I WOULD BE REMISS IF I DIDN'T TAKE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOU THE HARDWARE.
[APPLAUSE] THIS IS THE HARDWARE.
WE'VE ACHIEVED THIS GOAL AND RECEIVE THIS AWARD FOR REALLY 12 OR 13 YEARS RUNNING.
I'M SUPER PROUD TO JOIN THIS ORGANIZATION.
SUPER PROUD TO BE A PART OF THIS EFFORT IN SUPPORTING EXCELLENCE IN OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT.
THANK YOU. THAT CONCLUDES MY PRESENTATION.
IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS. [APPLAUSE]
>> GREAT, GREAT JOB. THANK YOU.
I'M TRYING TO UNDERSTAND YOU ALL GET TO NICKNAME MR. FISHER.
WHAT IS HIS NICKNAME? THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO KNOW.
>> THEY WON'T TELL ME THAT. [LAUGHTER]
>> FISH. WE HAVE STACE AND FISH. I LOVE IT.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU SO MUCH. GREAT JOB.
>> GREAT JOB. GREAT PRESENTATION AS WELL.
THANK YOU FOR KEEPING US ON POINT.
A THANK YOU TEAM ALSO FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK.
BOARD, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? YES. MS. DAVIS?
>> JUST A COMMENT. IN ADDITION TO THE THINGS YOU JUST SAID, MR. FISHER, WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IS YOU PUT A LOT OF PEOPLE OUT OF THEIR COMFORT ZONE.
[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE WHEN THEY CAME BY, THEY LIKE WE'RE ALL INTROVERTS.
[LAUGHTER] BUT GREAT JOB. JOB WELL DONE.
>> [LAUGHTER] I WAS THINKING THE SAME THING.
THEY DON'T LIKE COMING OUT A LOT.
I'M GLAD YOU HAD THEM DO THAT. THAT WAS FUN.
I'VE BEEN KNOWING KRISTEN FOR A LONG TIME SO IT WAS GOOD TO GIVE HER A HUG.
>> I JUST WANT TO JUST SAY TO MR. FISHER AND CERTAINLY TO MS. ADRIAN,
[00:50:04]
JUST HOW PROUD YOU ALL MAKE US FOR THE WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE.I JUST WANTED TO GO ON THE RECORD THAT THE TAXPAYERS IN CROWLEY ISD SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE JOB THAT YOU ALL ARE DOING.
WHAT YOU DO ENSURES THAT WE ARE ACCOUNTABLE TO THE HIGHEST STANDARDS FOR THE DOLLARS THAT COME INTO OUR DISTRICT AND THE DOLLARS THAT GO OUT.
I JUST WANT IT TO BE ON THE RECORD THAT OUR TAXPAYERS, AND AS A TAXPAYER, WE OWE YOU A DEBT OF GRATITUDE JUST FOR THE CONTINUAL WORK THAT YOU AND YOUR ENTIRE TEAM CONTINUED TO DO SO THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR A JOB WELL DONE.
>> THANK YOU. WE HAVE ANOTHER REPORT ITEM.
THIS IS AGENDA ITEM 6.2, WHICH IS THE CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY. DR. MCFARLAND.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, I'M GOING TO FIRST ASK MR. GILLIES TO COME UP SINCE HE'S BEEN SUPERVISING THE CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY, AND HE WILL INTRODUCE MS. GRIFFIN TO YOU, BUT I WANT TO BRING MR. GILLIES UP FIRST JUST TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE WORK THAT HE'S DONE AS SUPERVISOR OF THAT ACADEMY. MR. GILLIES
>> GOOD EVENING, DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD, BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND DR. MCFARLAND.
SUPERVISING THE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL IS REALLY A BLESSING.
MS. GRIFFIN WORKS TIRELESSLY ON BEHALF OF THE STUDENTS THAT WALK THROUGH THOSE DOORS EVERY DAY.
SO I'M REALLY EXCITED TONIGHT THAT SHE GETS TO TALK ABOUT THE SUCCESS AND THE GROWTH OF THAT PROGRAM IN CISD AND THE IMMENSE OPPORTUNITY IT'S CREATING FOR OUR COMMUNITY.
SO I WILL GIVE YOU, MS. GRIFFIN.
>> THANK YOU, MR. GILLIES AND DR. MCFARLAND.
THANK YOU SO MUCH, SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD, AND ALL THE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS WE JUST APPRECIATE YOU SO MUCH, APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK THAT YOU DO.
TONIGHT, I AM VERY HONORED TO BE ABLE TO STAND BEFORE YOU, AND I'M A LITTLE EMOTIONAL FOR SOME REASON, BECAUSE OF ALL THE CELEBRATIONS WE DO SO MUCH IN CROWLEY ISD.
I WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY IS A HUGE PART OF THAT.
WE AT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY REPRESENT ALL OF THE BOARD GOALS, OUR THRIVING STUDENTS, OUR ENGAGED COMMUNITY, AND OUR EMPOWERED STAFF.
TONIGHT, I WANT TO BRING TO YOU SOME GOOD INFORMATION.
FIRST, I'D LIKE TO TALK WITH YOU ABOUT WHAT ARE THE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS THAT ARE PUT OUT THERE FOR EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL THAT MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS.
YOU'VE SEEN A LOT OF DIFFERENT ACCOUNTABILITY REPORTS, YOU'VE SEEN A LOT OF DIFFERENT THINGS, BUT EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL HAS SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS, AND THESE ARE IN OUR BENCHMARKS.
THE BLUEPRINT FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS FOR EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS IS ESTABLISHED, AND THEY JUST RECENTLY CHANGED IT.
BUT THE AFFECTS OF IT HAVE REALLY NOT CHANGED.
SO OUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN IN PLACE.
I WANT TO JUST TELL YOU THAT JUST SIMPLY STATED THAT THE BENCHMARKS ARE.
OUR SCHOOL DESIGN IS OUR SCHOOL IN OUR DISTRICT AND IT MAY BE DIFFERENT FROM OTHER EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS IN OTHER DISTRICTS.
OUR BENCHMARK 2 IS ABOUT OUR PARTNERSHIPS.
IN THE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL, OUR PARTNER IS A HIGHER EDUCATION ASSOCIATION, AND OUR PARTNER IS TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE.
WE ALSO PARTNER WITH OUR COMMUNITY AND OUR FAMILY MEMBERS.
OUR BENCHMARK 3 HAS TO DO WITH OUR RECRUITMENT AND OUR APPLICATION PROCESS.
THE BENCHMARK 4 HAS TO DO WITH OUR PATHWAY OF COURSES AND OUR ACADEMIC PREPARATION FOR STUDENTS.
THE BENCHMARK 5 IS OUR DEVELOPMENT OF OUR STUDENTS SUPPORT AND HOW WE HELP THE WHOLE CHILD.
LASTLY, EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL HAS OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES THAT ARE REQUIRED FOR DESIGNATION IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
I'D LIKE TO GO THROUGH THIS PRESENTATION WITH SOME DATA, SOME ACTUAL FACTS FOR YOU SO THAT YOU CAN SEE HOW OUR BENCHMARKS AND HOW OUR OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES ALL GO TOGETHER.
FIRST, I'D LIKE FOR YOU TO SEE OUR STUDENT ETHNIC MAKEUP.
[00:55:03]
ON THIS CHART, YOU'LL SEE OUR LONGITUDINAL ENROLLMENT AS WE STARTED IN THE YEAR 2016/17, AND AS WE'VE CARRIED THROUGH TO THIS YEAR SO FAR.WE'RE ALSO COMPARING THIS TO THE CROWLEY ISD CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR.
SO YOU CAN SEE THE ETHNICITIES AT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY REPRESENT THE WHOLE DISTRICT.
OUR BENCHMARK 3 IS OUR TARGET POPULATION, AND IT ALIGNS WITH OUR ACCESS OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES.
THEY PROVIDE THE GUIDANCE FOR ALL EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOLS TO RECRUIT STUDENTS THAT ARE ETHNICALLY SIMILAR TO THE DISTRICT THAT THEY SERVE.
THE NEXT CHART HAS TO DO WITH LOOKING AT A LITTLE MORE CLOSELY INTO THE PHILOSOPHY OF EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL.
THIS ADDS TO THE ETHNICITIES WITH OUR ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS AND OUR AT-RISK STUDENTS.
THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL IS THAT WE'RE RECRUITING AT-RISK STUDENTS ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED.
THOSE THAT ARE LEAST LIKELY TO ATTEND A HIGHER EDUCATION ONCE THEY LEAVE SCHOOL AND WE'RE TRYING TO GET THEM THAT FIRST SUCCESS.
CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY HAS AT-RISK AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED THAT MIRROR THE DISTRICT GRADES 9 THROUGH 12 AVERAGES.
OUR ANNUAL APPLICATION PROCESS.
AS WE POST ON OUR WEBSITE, IT EXPLAINS THE PROCESS OF ACCEPTANCE SO THAT WHENEVER OUR APPLICATION OPENS THE FIRST WEEK OF DECEMBER AND WE'RE RECRUITING FAMILIES AND ENCOURAGING THEM TO APPLY IN THIS OPEN APPLICATION.
WE CLOSE IT ABOUT MID JANUARY AND THEN WE GO THROUGH A WEIGHTED RATING SYSTEM.
SO WE TAKE EVERY APPLICATION, WE WEIGH IT, AND WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO ACCEPT THE STUDENTS WHO ARE MEETING THE AT-RISK AND THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED TO GIVE THEM THAT FIRST OPPORTUNITY OF ACCEPTANCE.
THIS SLIDE SHOWS YOU THE CULMINATION, AND IT ALSO GIVES YOU A GLIMPSE INTO BENCHMARK 1, WHICH IS OUR SCHOOL DESIGN.
OUR CCI SCHOLARS ARE WORKING TO ACCOMPLISH THE GOAL OF EARNING AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE OR AT LEAST 60 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS TOWARDS A BACHELOR'S.
WHAT YOU CAN SEE IN THIS IS THAT WE'VE BROKEN IT OUT BETWEEN CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
THESE ARE CCA STUDENTS THAT ARE STILL ENROLLED IN THEIR HOME CAMPUS.
OUR SCHOOL DESIGN ACTUALLY IS CALLED A SCHOOL WITHIN A SCHOOL MODEL.
OUR STUDENT ENROLLMENT STAYS WITH THEIR HOME CAMPUS, AND ALL OF THE CLASSES THAT THEY ATTEND ARE ACTUALLY AT THE CCA CAMPUS, AT THE CTE IS WHERE WE'RE HOUSED.
OUR ASSOCIATE DEGREE ATTAINMENT DATA, THEIR COLLEGE CAREER, MILITARY READINESS DATA, CCMR, YOU HEAR THAT A LOT, THEIR TEST DATA, SUCH AS TSI AND END OF COURSE DATA, ALL OF THOSE ARE REPORTED TO THE STATE THROUGH THE STUDENT'S HOME CAMPUS.
AS YOU CAN SEE, THAT SINCE OUR FIRST GRADUATING CLASS OF 2020, CCA SCHOLARS HAVE GRADUATED WITH THEIR ASSOCIATE DEGREE AT ABOUT 78% OF THE GRADUATES EARN THAT ASSOCIATES.
IF WE PUT THIS INTO A MONETARY PERSPECTIVE, LOOKING AT TCC TUITION, THEIR FEES, THE TEXTBOOK COSTS, EACH OF THESE STUDENTS HAS SAVED ABOUT $6,400, AND OVERALL, SO FAR OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS, WE'VE SAVED FAMILIES ABOUT $876,000 OVERALL.
WE'RE SO PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS.
ALTHOUGH YOU CAN SEE HERE IN THIS SLIDE ALSO, NOT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS EARNED THAT ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE.
BUT WHAT I CAN TELL YOU IS THAT ALL OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE EARNED SOME COLLEGE CREDIT AS THEY GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL.
IT'S NOT ALL FOR LOST, EVERY COLLEGE CREDIT THEY TAKE FORWARD WITH THEM, AND IT WILL BE TRANSFERABLE TO ANOTHER UNIVERSITY.
[01:00:04]
ON THIS NEXT SLIDE, WE'RE GOING TO GO INTO THE OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES.WHAT I WANT YOU TO SEE HERE IN THIS DATA IN THE NEXT FEW SLIDES.
THIS DATA IS FROM THE MOST RECENT OUTCOME-BASED MEASURE REPORT THAT'S DONE ANNUALLY.
THIS ONE WAS POSTED IN JANUARY, AND IT'S HOW WE EARNED OUR DESIGNATION FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
WE WERE NOT ONLY DESIGNATED AS AN EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL, BUT WE WERE ALSO DESIGNATED THIS YEAR AS A DISTINGUISHED EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF TEXAS.
IN THE OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES, THE FIRST ONE IS CALLED ACCESS.
THE ACCESS MEASURES FOCUS ON THAT ECHS PHILOSOPHY, WHERE WE'RE RECRUITING OUR AT-RISK AND ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS WHO HAVE A POTENTIAL TO SUCCEED IN ADVANCED COURSES AND SUPPORT THAT BENCHMARK 3, WHICH IS IN THE BLUEPRINT.
BASED ON OUR CURRENT YEAR CALCULATIONS, '23, '24, WE SHOULD STILL BE WITHIN THE 10% RANGE OF THE DISTRICT 9 THROUGH 12, SO WE'LL CONTINUE THAT, AND CONTINUE TO WORK TOWARDS THAT DISTINGUISHED EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL.
BECAUSE A MAJORITY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE AT-RISK, WE DEVELOP OUR STUDENTS' SUPPORTS THAT'S WHAT WE DO FROM BENCHMARK 5 STUDENTS' SUPPORT.
OUR STAFF IS SERVING AS NOT ONLY THE ACADEMIC COACHES AND TUTORS LIKE THEY DO ON MOST CAMPUSES, BUT THEY ALSO SERVE AS MENTORS FOR ALL OF OUR STUDENTS.
OUR COUNSELOR SERVES A DUAL ROLE.
SHE IS A GUIDANCE COUNSELOR FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION SIDE, BUT SHE ALSO IS DOING A LOT OF COLLEGE ADVISING, HELPING STUDENTS IDENTIFY THE DEGREE PLAN THAT MATCHES WHAT THEY WANT TO DO BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL.
ONCE THEY GET OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL, WHAT'S THE NEXT LEVEL OF COLLEGE? WHAT CAREER DO THEY WANT TO GO TO? HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THE DEGREE PLAN THAT'S GOING TO HELP THEM GET TO THOSE CLASSES?
>> THE NEXT OUTCOME-BASED MEASURE IS ACHIEVEMENT.
ACHIEVEMENT IS BASED ON OUR COLLEGE READINESS AND THE KNOWLEDGE SKILL DEVELOPMENT FOR THEIR SUCCESS IN COLLEGE.
THE COLLEGE READINESS HERE FIRST INVOLVES LOTS OF IMPORTANT TESTING IN READING AND WRITING AND IN MATH.
THAT MEANS THAT OUR TEST RESULTS, SUCH AS TSI TESTING, SAT TESTING, ALGEBRA 1 END OF COURSE, AND ENGLISH 2 END OF COURSE, ALL OF THOSE GO INTO THIS OUTCOME-BASED MEASURE.
OUR BENCHMARK 4 IS OUR ACADEMIC INFRASTRUCTURE.
THAT GUIDES THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR ACADEMIC COURSE STRUCTURE AND OUR DEGREE PLANS, AND IT PROVIDES THE APPROPRIATE COURSE SEQUENCE FOR OUR STUDENTS' SUCCESS.
NOT ONLY FOR THE STUDENT'S SUCCESS IN COLLEGE CLASSES BUT ALSO STUDENT'S SUCCESS ON THESE IMPORTANT TESTS.
WE HAVE OUR FOUNDATIONAL INSTRUCTION IN ENGLISH AND MATH, AND SO OUR TEACHERS ARE WORKING ON CRITICAL ANALYSIS AND PROBLEM-SOLVING SO THAT STUDENTS ARE PREPARED TO DO WELL AGAIN IN CLASSES AS WELL AS WELL ON THE EXAMS THAT ARE IMPORTANT FOR THEM.
THE TSI ARE THOSE MILESTONES IN ORDER TO BE ABLE TO TAKE CERTAIN COLLEGE CREDITS.
SO IF THEY'RE NOT MEETING THE TSI STANDARD, THEN IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO GET INTO THE COLLEGE CLASS AND EARN THE COLLEGE CREDIT. YES, MA'AM.
>> WHERE IT SAYS TSI COMPLETE, THAT'S THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS THAT HAVE COMPLETED IT.
THAT'S NOT THE OUTCOME OF THE TSI RESULTS.
>> WHENEVER THE COLLEGES SAY COMPLETE, THAT MEANS THEY HAVE HIT THE COLLEGE READINESS STANDARD LEVEL ON THE TSI.
WHAT THIS DATA'S TELLING YOU RIGHT HERE THIS DATA COMES FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR'S 11TH-GRADE CLASS AND IT'S TELLING YOU THAT 92% OF THOSE STUDENTS AT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE EITHER THEY EARNED THE COLLEGE READINESS SCORE ON TSI READING AND WRITING OR THEY WERE ABLE TO EARN THE COLLEGE CREDIT AND SAY AN ENGLISH ON-RAMPS COURSE SO THAT TCC THEN WAVED THEIR TSI REQUIREMENT, SO IT'S ONE OR THE OTHER.
[01:05:01]
IN THE MATH, AT THIS TIME WITH THIS GRADE LEVEL, THOSE 11TH GRADERS, THAT IS STRICTLY TSI MATH SCORES AND SO THEY DID VERY WELL.WE HAVE SINCE ADDED THE ON-RAMPS COLLEGE ALGEBRA SO THAT IF THEY EARN THE COLLEGE CREDIT IN THAT COLLEGE ALGEBRA, IT ALSO MAKES THEM TSI COMPLETE.
>> THE LAST OUTCOME-BASED MEASURE IS ATTAINMENT.
THE ATTAINMENT MEASURES ARE LOOKING AT THAT PERSISTENCE FROM, AT THE EARLY COLLEGE HOSPITAL, FROM NINTH GRADE ALL THE WAY THROUGH GRADUATION.
IT ALSO IS LOOKING AT THOSE COLLEGE CREDIT MILESTONES.
IN OTHER WORDS, WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO GET ON TRACK, AND STAY ON TRACK, AND IF THEY FALL BEHIND, HOW DO WE HELP THEM GET BACK ON TRACK? OR IF WE CAN'T GET THEM BACK ON TRACK, HOW DO WE HELP THEM EARN THE COLLEGE CREDITS THAT THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO GO ON AND MOVE INTO THEIR FUTURE? ONE OF OUR BIGGEST CHALLENGES IS THE STUDENT COURSE LOAD.
TRYING TO FIT 60 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS IN FOUR YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL CREATES A VERY HEAVY LOAD FOR THOSE STUDENTS, SO COMING OUT OF MIDDLE SCHOOL, OUR NINTH AND 10TH GRADERS WHO ARE TAKING 1-2 COLLEGE COURSES EACH SEMESTER, AND ON TOP OF THEIR FOUR AND FIVE HIGH SCHOOL COURSES AND THEN OUR JUNIORS AND SENIORS.
ONCE THEY HIT THAT LEVEL, THEY ARE TAKING FOUR AND FIVE COLLEGE COURSES ALONG WITH ONE OR TWO HIGH SCHOOL COURSES.
FOUR COLLEGE COURSES, FIVE COLLEGE COURSES, THAT'S A FULL-TIME COLLEGE STUDENT, AND SO OUR JUNIORS AND SENIORS ARE TAKING AN EXTRA HEAVY LOAD, SOMETHING HEAVIER THAN A NORMAL COLLEGE STUDENT WOULD.
WE WORK TO PUT IN LOTS OF SUPPORTS.
AGAIN, THAT GOES BACK TO OUR BENCHMARK 5.
IN THOSE SUPPORTS, AVID IS A HUGE PIECE OF THAT.
ALL OF OUR STUDENTS TAKE AVID FOR FOUR YEARS.
AVID SUPPORTS THEM BOTH WITH ACADEMIC SKILLS LIKE NOTE-TAKING, READING, WRITING, TUTORIALS, AND COLLABORATIVE STUDY HABITS, BUT ALSO WITH ORGANIZATION AND PLANNING SKILLS.
AVID HELPS CREATE THAT FAMILY ATMOSPHERE.
IT REMINDS OUR STUDENTS THAT WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, WE'VE GOT TO HELP EACH OTHER.
ALSO, AVID SENIORS ARE WORKING ON SCHOLARSHIPS, SO AVID HELPS THEM WITH THAT SCHOLARSHIP AND GRANT WRITING PROCESS.
LAST YEAR'S SENIORS EARNED OVER THREE MILLION DOLLARS IN SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS.
ANOTHER THING THAT WE'VE DONE THIS YEAR, WE'VE HAD SOME SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL LEARNING LESSONS IN THE PAST, BUT THIS YEAR WE CONCENTRATED THEM ON THE SEVEN PILLARS OF MENTAL HEALTH SO THAT WE'RE WORKING ON STUDENT MENTAL HEALTH THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
SOME ADDITIONAL CHALLENGES THAT WE'VE BEEN FACING OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS IS REALLY A LOT OF STUDENT INVOLVEMENT.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AT CROWLEY COLLEGIATE IS HUGE.
CCA STUDENTS KNOW THAT THEY ARE BUILDING THEIR OWN HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, AND PART OF THAT IS THEY'RE CREATING THEIR OWN CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS.
SOME OF THEM MIRROR WHAT THEY HAVE AT THE COMPREHENSIVE HIGH SCHOOLS, SOME OF THEM ARE VERY DIFFERENT.
THEY ALSO CREATE EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES.
WE RECENTLY HAD A SPANISH CLUB, DEVELOPED A CELEBRATION FOR HISPANIC HERITAGE, AND IT WAS REALLY WONDERFUL TO SEE THE SCHOLARS IN BOTH SPANISH 1 AND 2 CREATE A DISPLAYS OF HISPANIC COUNTRIES THAT ARE AROUND THE WORLD.
THEN THEY HAD A GAME THAT WENT WITH EACH ONE OF THOSE.
IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THEIR CREATIVITY AND HOW THEY ESTABLISHED THAT.
THEY HAD GAMES FOR SMALL CHILDREN AS WELL AS GAMES FOR HIGH SCHOOLERS.
THANK YOU, DR. WOODSON-MAYFIELD, FOR COMING TO THAT EVENT.
WE ARE SO BLESSED TO HAVE YOU AND SO GRATEFUL THAT YOU WERE THERE TO ENCOURAGE THE STUDENTS IN WHAT THEY WERE DOING.
BUT A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS ALSO WANT TO CONNECT WITH THEIR HOME CAMPUS, AND SO WE'VE BEEN WORKING THE PAST FEW YEARS TO HELP THEM DO THAT IN A LOT OF DIFFERENT WAYS.
ONE OF THOSE IS THE ATHLETICS AND BAND.
WE WORKED WITH THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT,
[01:10:02]
AND WE NOW HAVE ABOUT 48 SCHOLARS THAT ARE PARTICIPATING IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES THROUGH THEIR HOME CAMPUS.SO THAT'S ABOUT 13% OF CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY RIGHT NOW PARTICIPATES IN EXTRACURRICULAR ON THEIR HOME CAMPUS.
SOME OF THESE STUDENTS ARE DOING IT OUTSIDE OF OUR SCHOOL DAY, WHERE THEY'RE GOING TO PRACTICE BEFORE OR AFTER SCHOOL, AND SOME OF THEM ARE ACTUALLY DOING IT DURING THE SCHOOL DAY BECAUSE THEY PLANNED AHEAD AND THEY TOOK CLASSES OVER THE SUMMER, AND THEY WERE ABLE TO FREE UP SCHEDULE, GROOMING THEIR SCHEDULE TO GO TO THE HOME CAMPUS.
WE'RE GETTING THERE, WORKING TOGETHER, WORKING WITH THE PRINCIPALS.
THE MOST RECENT THING, WE'VE HAD STUDENTS WHO WANTED TO GO TO PEP RALLIES, AND SO WE'RE WORKING TO GET THE OPPORTUNITY FOR OUR CCA STUDENTS TO ATTEND THE NORTH CROWLEY PEP RALLY ON THURSDAY, I THINK IT'S THURSDAY, AT THEIR HOME CAMPUS SO THAT THEY CAN GO AND ENJOY AND PARTICIPATE IN THAT.
WE'VE GOT TO WORK REALLY CLOSELY WITH TCC AND MAKE SURE THAT OUR STUDENTS GET THE HELP THAT THEY NEED WHEN THEY NEED IT, AND MAKE SURE THAT OUR STAFF EVEN HAS HELP FROM TCC AND THE RESOURCES TO BE ABLE TO TURN AROUND AND HELP OUR STUDENTS AS WELL.
WHY CCA? OR WHY EARLY COLLEGE? WHEN YOU LOOK AT THIS PICTURE, THIS IS LAST YEAR'S GRADUATING CLASS, AND THESE STUDENTS, EVERY STUDENT THAT YOU SEE IN THE FIRST FEW ROWS IN THE GOLD STOLE, THESE STUDENTS EARNED THEIR ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE.
THEY WALKED GRADUATION AT TARRANT COUNTY COLLEGE APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS BEFORE THEIR HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION, AND SO THEY WERE VERY EXCITED, BUT THEN THEY HAVE TO COME BACK AND GO TO HIGH SCHOOL AND GET THEIR HIGH SCHOOL FINALS.
BUT THEN THEY GOT TO REALLY EXPERIENCE ANOTHER GRADUATION, SO IT WAS REALLY A BLESSING FOR THEM.
THEN, THINKING ABOUT ALL OF THE BENEFITS THAT THEY HAVE RECEIVED BY WORKING THROUGH THIS PROGRAM, THAT IS VERY DIFFICULT AND VERY RIGOROUS.
>> ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? TRUSTEE DAVIS?
>> FIRST OF ALL, VERY GOOD COMPREHENSIVE REPORT.
I DO HAVE, AND THESE ARE THINGS THAT I'M SURE YOU MENTIONED, BUT SOMEWHERE ALONG THE WAY I FORGOT OR DIDN'T HEAR.
THE FIRST QUESTION IS, ARE ALL OF THESE STUDENTS GOING THROUGH AVID?
>> I KNOW AT ONE POINT THERE WAS SOME CONCERN ON THE STUDENT'S PART ABOUT NOT BEING ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES.
[OVERLAPPING] I'M SO GLAD TO HEAR THAT BECAUSE IT WAS A CONCERN AT ONE POINT, SO THANK YOU FOR WORKING THAT OUT.
>> ON SLIDE 4, OR 5, OR 6, [LAUGHTER] I CAN'T REMEMBER.
BY THE TIME I WAS REALLY LOOKING AT IT, IT WENT AWAY.
BUT ONE YEAR, CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL DID NOT HAVE GOOD PARTICIPATION.
OUT OF ALL THE YEARS, YOU SHOWED. NO, THAT'S NOT IT.
>> MAYBE SEVEN OR EIGHT OR NINE.
>> IT WAS ONE YEAR WHERE YOU WERE SHOWING THE SIDE-BY-SIDE COMPARISONS OF ENROLLMENT FROM NORTH CROWLEY AND CROWLEY HIGH.
ANYWAY, I WAS JUST WONDERING, I THINK IT MAY HAVE BEEN 2021, WHAT HAPPENED THAT YEAR WITH CROWLEY HIGH? WHY THEY DIDN'T HAVE AS MUCH PARTICIPATION?
>> SO ENROLLMENT FROM CROWLEY SIDE AND NORTH CROWLEY SIDE IS IT VARIES FROM YEAR TO YEAR.
THIS YEAR, WHICH IS ALMOST PHENOMENAL, THIS YEAR OUR NINTH-GRADE CLASS HAS
[01:15:02]
EXACTLY THE SAME NUMBER FROM NORTH CROWLEY AND CROWLEY.THERE ARE 51 STUDENTS AT NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, NORTH CROWLEY NINTH GRADE, 51 AT CROWLEY NINTH GRADE THAT ARE AT CCA.
SO IT VARIES FROM YEAR TO YEAR AND I DO KNOW THAT WE HAVE CONTINUED TO RECRUIT ON THE CROWLEY SIDE OVER THE YEARS BECAUSE AT THE VERY BEGINNING, WE WERE MORE HEAVY TOWARDS THE NORTH CROWLEY SIDE.
>>MAYBE IT WAS THAT YEAR.[LAUGHTER].
>> VERY GOOD REPORT, THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT. GREAT PRESENTATION, MS. GRIFFIN.
I'M JUST CURIOUS ABOUT KNOWING THAT THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM IS TO TARGET AT RISK STUDENTS.
I THINK THAT'S ONE OF THE THINGS THAT A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW ABOUT EARLY COLLEGE.
I THINK THERE'S AN INTERPRETATION THAT IT IS FOR ADVANCED STUDENTS.
SO IF YOU CAN, I'M JUST CURIOUS, HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THE STUDENTS FOR THE EARLY COLLEGE PROGRAM? IS IT SIMPLY BY THEM APPLYING THEMSELVES? OR PARENTS APPLYING FOR THEIR SCHOLAR? OR IS THERE A MECHANISM THAT WE HAVE IN PLACE KNOWING THAT A STUDENT IS AT RISK WHERE WE REACH OUT TO THEM?
>> WE HAVE A COUPLE OF LAYERS INVOLVED IN OUR RECRUITMENT PROCESS.
ONE OF THOSE IS TO REACH ALL MIDDLE-SCHOOL AVID CLASSES, BECAUSE THE AVID STUDENT AND THE CRITERIA FOR AVID ARE VERY SIMILAR TO CRITERIA FOR EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL.
SO WE REACH EVERY AVID STUDENT THROUGH THEIR MIDDLE-SCHOOL AVID CLASS, THAT'S ONE WAY.
WE SEND SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS TO AT-RISK FAMILIES, FAMILIES OF AT RISK EIGHTH GRADERS, INVITING THEM TO COME TO OUR INFORMATION MEETINGS SO THAT WE CAN GIVE THEM FACE-TO-FACE THE INFORMATION ON THAT.
WE ALSO SEND OUT FLIER INFORMATION TO THOSE AT-RISK EIGHTH GRADE FAMILIES.
AGAIN IF IT'S AN INVITATION THEN IT SOUNDS LIKE IT'S NOT AN AT-RISK PROGRAM BECAUSE IT'S NOT, THIS IS AN ACCELERATED IN A RIGOROUS PROGRAM.
SO WE SEND OUT THOSE INVITATIONS, SPECIAL INVITATIONS TO THOSE STUDENTS.
THE COUNSELORS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL ARE ALSO WORKING WITH OUR COUNSELOR TO IDENTIFY STUDENTS TO INVITE TO INFORMATION MEETINGS AND ENCOURAGE THEIR FAMILIES TO COME.
BUT THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS AN OPEN APPLICATION.
ANYONE CAN APPLY ON THE PROCESS AND THAT'S WHY WE DO A WEIGHTED ACCEPTANCE.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE GIVING THE BEST OPPORTUNITY TO THE AT-RISK AND THE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED STUDENTS BEFORE GIVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO THOSE THAT ARE NOT.
>> LAST QUESTION, CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHAT AN AT-RISK STUDENT IS? LIKE WHAT ARE THE CRITERIA?[OVERLAPPING]
>> THERE ARE 13 CRITERIA IN THE STATE OF TEXAS TO IDENTIFY A STUDENT IS AT RISK.
SOME OF THOSE APPLY TO THE END OF COURSE AND STARR TESTING IN EARLIER GRADES.
SO A STUDENT THAT MAY HAVE FAILED A STARR TEST AT ANYTIME DURING THEIR CAREER IN SCHOOL IS IDENTIFIED AS AT RISK.
STUDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN TO THE ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL AT ONE TIME ARE IDENTIFIED AS AT RISK.
STUDENTS THAT ARE UNDER FAMILY PROTECTIVE SERVICES IN SOME WAY.
STUDENTS THAT ARE IN FOSTER CARE.
STUDENTS THAT HAVE BEEN RETAINED AFTER KINDERGARTEN OR FIRST GRADE.
STUDENTS WHO HAVE BEEN RETAINED A YEAR ARE AT RISK.
THERE'S 13 CRITERIA, SO ALL OF THOSE APPLY TO STUDENTS THAT ARE AT RISK.
BUT AT-RISK DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN THAT THEY CAN'T DO THE WORK.
>> RIGHT, AND THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I KNOW I PUT YOU ON THE SPOT WITH THAT QUESTION BUT I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT JUST FOR EVERY FAMILY TO UNDERSTAND THAT NO MATTER WHAT THIS IS AN OPPORTUNITY THAT IS AVAILABLE TO EVERY STUDENT IN CROWLEY ISD.
>> IT IS, AND WE HAVE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS IN CROWLEY ISD IT'S AMAZING.
>> I'M LATE SO I APOLOGIZE YOU MAY HAVE ALREADY SPOKE TO THIS.
HOW DO THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF THE SCHOOL COMPARE TO THAT OF THE DISTRICT?
[01:20:07]
WAS THAT A THOUGHT THAT YOU ALREADY HAD? CAN WE DO THAT AGAIN? I'M SORRY[OVERLAPPING]>> THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ARE VERY CLOSE.
WE'RE WITHIN 10% OF THE DIFFERENT ETHNICITIES AS FAR AS THE WHOLE DISTRICT IS CONCERNED.
SO OUR STUDENTS ARE VERY REPRESENTATIVE OF THE WHOLE DISTRICT.
>> AS FAR AS JUST MALE, FEMALE BREAKDOWN IS IT ALSO IDENTICAL?
>> WE'RE NOT IDENTICAL, WE DO SERVE MORE FEMALES THAN WE DO MALES.
BUT WITH THE ATHLETICS BUILDING UP AND WORKING SO CLOSELY WITH THE COACHES WERE NOT LOSING AS MANY MALE STUDENTS TO THE HOME CAMPUS AT ACCEPTANCE.
>> THANK YOU. TRUSTEE ROBINSON.
>> HELLO, I HAVE A QUESTION REGARDING THE CONNECTEDNESS.
I KNOW YOU SPOKE WITH ABOUT 13% OF STUDENTS WHO WERE PARTICIPATING IN EXTRA CURRICULARS.
I WANTED TO KNOW, IS IT POSSIBLE FOR CCA STUDENTS TO TAKE CLASSES WITH FULL CREDIT STUDENTS? BECAUSE THAT WAY THEY MAY BE ABLE TO INTERACT WITH STUDENTS THAT THEY DON'T KNOW.
SO WHEN THEY DO GO TO PEP RALLIES AND EVENTS AT THEIR HOME CAMPUS, THEY MAY KNOW SOMEONE OR EVEN TAKE ELECTIVES.
I KNOW THERE'S VARIOUS PROGRAMS OF STUDY THERE.
SO MAYBE TAKE SOME AND MIX THEM INTO THEIR COURSEWORK.
SO THAT THEY CAN MEET PEOPLE BECAUSE I KNOW AT GRADUATION A LOT WILL HAVE SOMEONE COME UP AND SPEAK SAYING, ''YOU DON'T KNOW ME [LAUGHTER] BUT I'M PLEDGED AT YOU CAMPUS AND I'VE BEEN THERE FOR YEARS,''AND THEY'LL INTRODUCE YOURSELVES FOR THE FIRST TIME.
SO I WAS THINKING IT THERE ARE WAYS WHERE STUDENTS WHO ARE ALREADY ATTENDING CAMPUS BECAUSE CCACTE, IF THEY CAN INTERACT AND INTERMINGLE WITH ONE ANOTHER THEY WON'T BE SO UNFAMILIAR?
>> ABSOLUTELY. RIGHT NOW, BECAUSE WE HAVE WE HAVE CREATED A DUAL CREDIT WITH EMBEDDED INSTRUCTORS, CCA INSTRUCTORS AND DUAL CREDIT INSTRUCTORS ARE TEACHING SOME MIXED CLASSES.
SO CCA STUDENTS DO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE SOME DUAL CREDIT COURSES WITH THEIR HOME CAMPUS COUNTERPARTS.
FOR THE ELECTIVES, ALL OF THE ELECTIVES AT THROUGH THE CROWLEY COLLEGIATE DEGREE PLANS HAVE TO FOCUS ON EARNING THAT 60 COLLEGE CREDIT HOURS.
SO ALL OF THE ELECTIVES ARE ESSENTIALLY COLLEGE COURSES AND RIGHT NOW AT THE CTE THERE'S NOT THAT OPPORTUNITY.
THERE MAY BE IN THE FUTURE AS WE'RE GROWING MORE ASSOCIATE DEGREE PROGRAMS IN OUR DISTRICT.
SO THERE MAY BE IN THE FUTURE OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS TO TAKE ELECTIVE CLASSES THAT ARE AT THE COLLEGE LEVEL.
>> THE OUTCOME-BASED MEASURES, THEY LOOK AT 40% GRADUATING WITH AN ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE TO BE DESIGNATED AS AN EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL.
TO BE DISTINGUISHED, THEY'RE LOOKING AT 50% EARNING THE ASSOCIATE'S DEGREE AND WE'RE OVERALL IT'S 74%.
WE'VE NOT DROPPED TO THAT 50% IN ANY ONE SCHOOL YEAR.
>> I SAID APPRECIATE IT. THANK YOU.
QUESTIONS FROM OUR STUDENT BOARD. TRUSTEE MAYFIELD.
BACK TO WHAT, MS. DAVIS, WAS SAYING WHEN YOU TALKED ABOUT THE STUDENTS THAT ARE NOW PARTICIPATING IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES LIKE SPORTS AND EVERYTHING.
I JUST WAS ASKING, WOULD THERE BE ANY SETBACKS IF YOU NOTICED A DECREASE IN THEIR PERFORMANCE OR LIKE HOW WILL WE DO WITH THAT AND IS THERE LIKE EXTRA SUPPORT THAT WE GIVE THEM VERSUS THE OTHER STUDENTS?
OUR STUDENT ATHLETES THEY'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH THIS A COUPLE OF YEARS.
[01:25:03]
WE GENERALLY DO NOT ALLOW FRESHMEN TO TRY TO WORK AHEAD IN A COLLEGE CLASS BECAUSE THEY'RE COMING OUT OF MIDDLE-SCHOOL, THEY REALLY NEED TO EXPERIENCE A FULL LENGTH COLLEGE CLASS SO THESE ARE SOPHOMORES OR JUNIORS AND I THINK WE HAVE A COUPLE OF SENIORS THAT ARE ALSO PARTICIPATING IN ATHLETICS.THEY ARE WORKING THROUGH SUPPORT SYSTEMS SUCH AS THOSE STUDENTS GENERALLY HAVE AN EXTRA FREE PERIOD SO THAT THEY CAN GO GET TUTORIAL HELP.
THEY CAN WORK WITH NOT ONLY THEIR STUDY GROUPS, BUT THEY CAN ALSO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE STAYING ON TRACK.
BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THEY DON'T GET SIX-WEEKS GRADES FOR THEIR COLLEGE CLASSES, IT STILL IMPACTS THEIR GPA AND OVERALL AVERAGES.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY'RE SUCCESSFUL AS WELL.
BUT THANK YOU, THAT'S A GREAT QUESTION.
I KNOW RIGHT NOW [INAUDIBLE] STUDENT THROUGH MY CCA LECTURES I'M AFFORDED INTERNSHIPS AND WORKERS EXPERIENCE AND I WAS WONDERING IF THERE'S ANYTHING SUCH AS THAT BESIDES EXTRACURRICULAR SUCH AS BAND AND SPORTS FOR WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE.
>> OKAY. STUDENTS IN CROWLEY COLLEGIATE ACADEMY, THROUGH THEIR AVID PROGRAM, THEY HAVE WORKED TO APPLY AND SOME OF THEM HAVE BEEN AWARDED INTERNSHIPS OVER THE SUMMER.
DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR, IT'S VERY DIFFICULT TO DO THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR HEAVY LOAD.
BUT INTERNSHIPS OVER THE SUMMER, WE'VE HAD SEVERAL.
THERE WAS JUST RELEASED THE CURRENT TECHNOLOGY MAGAZINE AND 2022 GRADUATE BRENDAN IRVIN WAS FOCUSED IN THAT.
HE STARTED WITH AN INTERNSHIP AT WALMART AFTER HE GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL AND HE APPLIED THROUGH THAT.
HE APPLIED THROUGH HIS AVID PROGRAM FOR THAT.
>> YES, TRUSTEE ROBINSON. THANK YOU, TRUSTEES.
>> I HAVE ANOTHER QUESTION TO KIND OF PIGGYBACK ON STUDENT TRUSTEE MAYFIELD.
IF STUDENTS AREN'T SUCCESSFUL AND THEY DON'T SEE PROGRESS, DATE IS SIX WEEKS, WHATEVER.
BEFORE THE TCC WITHDRAW DATE APPROACHES AND STUDENTS WITHDRAW FROM THE COURSE WITHOUT RECEIVING A FAILING GRADE.
HOWEVER, IF A STUDENT IS TRULY NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO PASS, THEN WE WOULD RATHER THAT THEY DROP THE CLASS WITHOUT RECEIVING A FAILING GRADE.
AND THEN WE'LL WORK TO TRY TO GET THAT COURSE BACK IN THEIR SCHEDULE.
OR THEY MIGHT NEED TO TAKE THAT COURSE OVER THE SUMMER TO STAY ON TRACK WITH THEIR, WITH THEIR PEERS BUT WHENEVER THEY DROP A CLASS, THEN WE HAVE TO FIND A PLACE TO PUT THEM, RIGHT? SO IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR THE STUDENT AND IT'S VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEIR SCHEDULE WHENEVER THEY CHOOSE TO DROP A CLASS, WE WOULD RATHER GET THEM THE SUPPORTS.
ONE OF THE REASONS THAT EMBEDDED INSTRUCTORS HAS BEEN SO HELPFUL IS BECAUSE EMBEDDED INSTRUCTORS UNDERSTAND THAT.
THEY UNDERSTAND THAT IF A STUDENT STARTS STRUGGLING AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR, AND WE KNOW HISTORICALLY IN COLLEGE CLASSES, THE FIRST EXAM THAT THEY TAKE IN A COLLEGE CLASS IS GOING TO BE THE MOST DIFFICULT EXAM EVER, BECAUSE THEY'VE NEVER TAKEN ONE BY THAT PROFESSOR.
OUR EMBEDDED INSTRUCTORS HAVE BUILT-IN SAFEGUARDS SO THAT FAILING AN EXAM IS NOT GOING TO KILL YOU FOR YOUR SEMESTER GRADE AND SO THEY STILL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO PASS FOR THIS SEMESTER. THANK YOU.
I THINK I SAID A VERY GOOD REPORT, AND I'M GOING TO SPEAK FOR ME PERSONALLY.
I DIDN'T REALIZE HOW MANY MOVING PARTS YOU HAVE TO MANAGE IN ORDER TO MAKE THIS WORK FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO, THANK YOU, BECAUSE IT'S NOT AS EASY AS ENROLLING THEM HERE AND THEN GO SO THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS, YOU ACTUALLY USE THE TERM COMPREHENSIVE.
VERY FITTING TO YOUR POINT, SO YES.
[01:30:02]
GREAT JOB. THANK YOU SO MUCH.THANK YOU AGAIN, MR. GILLIES, FOR YOUR LEADERSHIP AS WELL.
OUR STUDENTS ARE IN A GOOD PLACE.
OUR STUDENTS HAVE A LOT ON THEIR PLATE.
I UNDERSTAND EVEN EARLY COLLEGE IS NOT EASY.
COLLEGE ITSELF IS NOT EASY, HIGH-SCHOOL IS NOT EASY SO TO COMBINE BOTH OF THOSE, THAT SAYS A LOT, BUT I REALLY, REALLY APPRECIATE THE QUESTIONS AND THE ANSWERS REGARDING THE SUPPORT AND THAT THEY GET IT ON BOTH LEVELS, THE HIGH SCHOOL SIDE AND THE COLLEGIATE SIDE.
I THINK THAT'S IMPORTANT, SO THANK YOU.
ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? YES, TRUSTEE GRASSIA?
>> THE ONE THING THAT I WOULD LIKE TO SAY AND I JUST LOVE LISTENING.
ONE THING I WOULD LOVE TO SAY IS I WISH THAT MY FRESHMAN YEAR OF COLLEGE.
EAST TEXAS STATE CAME IN AND HELPED ME HALF AS MUCH AS YOU ALL ARE HELPING THE STUDENTS.
THAT WAY, ETL SHOE WOULD HAVE ENCOURAGED ME TO COME BACK FOR A SECOND YEAR, BUT THEY DIDN'T DO THAT SO IT IS WHAT IT IS. THANK YOU.
>> SERIOUSLY, IF WE HAD WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TODAY, WE'D PROBABLY BE IN DIFFERENT POSITIONS, DIFFERENT ROLES.
WE JUST WOULD SO WE APPRECIATE YOU ALL FOR WHAT YOU DO SO THANK YOU.
>> DR. MCFARLAND. MADAM PRESIDENT, JUST HAVE ONE SLIGHT ITEM THAT I NEGLECTED TO SHARE EARLIER AND IT'S DEALING WITH OUR SURVEY.
WE HAVE A DISTRICT SURVEY THAT IS CURRENTLY UNDERWAY, AS I LIKE MR. MOFFIT TO COME UP AND JUST QUICKLY MOFFIT GIVE US AN OVERVIEW OF OUR DISTRICT SURVEY AND WHAT IS TO COME.
>> ABSOLUTELY. GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. MCFARLAND.
IT IS WITH GREAT EXCITEMENT THAT I SHARE THAT ON OCTOBER 19TH, WE LAUNCHED OUR STAKE CISD STAKEHOLDER CLIMATE SURVEY.
THIS SURVEY WAS DESIGNED TO GATHER DATA FROM STUDENTS IN GRADES 3-12.
SEE ALL CISD EMPLOYEES AND CISD PARENTS.
THESE SURVEYS WERE DESIGNED AND DISTRIBUTED BY QUALTRICS TO ASSIST US IN GETTING THIS FEEDBACK IN THE AREA OF SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT, ACADEMIC PROGRAMS, TEACHING QUALITY, SCHOOL CLIMATE, SAFETY MEASURES, COMMUNICATION AND MORE.
THE FEEDBACK OBTAINED FROM THESE SURVEYS WILL BE UTILIZED TO IDENTIFY AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT, FORMULATION STRATEGIC PLANS, AND MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ON WHAT THE FUTURE NEEDS IN CROWLEY ISD.
OVERALL PARTICIPATION HAS PICKED UP TREMENDOUSLY.
OF OUR 2,300, APPROXIMATELY 2,300 CISD STAFF MEMBERS, 1,100 OF THOSE STAFF MEMBERS HAVE ALREADY PARTICIPATED AND BEEN ENGAGED WITH OUR SURVEY JUST TODAY.
I THINK APPROXIMATELY 980 STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN THE SURVEY.
IN ADDITION TO THAT, WE HAVE ABOUT 340 PARENTS THAT HAVE ALREADY TAKEN THE SURVEY.
THE SURVEY WINDOW IS STILL OPEN FOR ALL OUR CISD STUDENTS, PARENTS AND STAFF MEMBERS TO GO IN AND TAKE THE SURVEY AND SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT THAT SURVEY AND LOOK FORWARD TO GETTING SOME GOOD RESULTS IN ORDER TO HELP US IN MAKING SOME INFORMED DECISIONS. ANY QUESTIONS?
>> I JUST HAVE ONE. WHEN DOES THE SURVEY CLOSE?
>> IT'S SCHEDULED TO CLOSE OCTOBER 27TH. WE'LL TAKE A LOOK AT THAT.
>> THE DISTRICT WEBSITE, YOU CAN ACCESS IT THERE.
ONE OF THE THINGS WE HAVE ON THE HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUSES, WE PROVIDED SOME QR CODES FOR STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE CAMPUS TO BE ABLE TO GO INTO SCAN THOSE WITH THEIR CELL PHONES, PUT THE INFORMATION IN AND TAKE THE SURVEY.
>> DO THE STUDENTS KNOW TO TAKE THE SURVEY?
>> YES. WE COULD LEAD TO COMMUNICATING WITH CAMPUSES AND CAMPUS LEADERSHIP, AS WELL AS STAFF MEMBERS HAVE BEEN SHARING TO STUDENTS CERTAIN THINGS AVAILABLE FOR THEM TO TAKE THE QR CODE.
>> THE DEFAULT. THANK YOU. SO THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY STUDENT TRUSTEES TO ENCOURAGE YOUR CLASSMATES TO TAKE THE SURVEY.
AND YOU ALL ARE OUT OF SCHOOL TOMORROW, BUT YOU HAVE SOCIAL MEDIA.
>> ALSO, SPEAKING OF SOCIAL MEDIA, I KNOW MR. KERSTEN SHOWED ME SOME THINGS ON INSTAGRAM THAT WE PUT OUT ABOUT THE SURVEY.
SO MS. GARCIA, IF YOU COULD JUST MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS TRUSTEES, GET ALL THE INSTAGRAM POST, I THINK IS WHAT YOU CALL THEM SO YOU ALL CAN HELP US PUSH IT OUT [LAUGHTER].
[01:35:03]
>>THE QUESTION I HAVE FOR THE TRUSTEES IS, DID YOU ALL KNOW OF THE SURVEY?
>> WE KNOW THE SURVEY BECAUSE WE WERE HERE.
>> THAT'S WHY I ASKED THE QUESTION EARLIER BECAUSE I WANTED TO MAKE SURE IT'S NOT JUST EVERYBODY THAT'S PARTICIPATING.
WHAT INFORMATION ARE WE GIVEN THAT I HEARD YOU SAID THAT YOU ARE CODES AROUND THE SCHOOL OR THEIR ANNOUNCEMENTS GOING OUT THROUGHOUT THE DAY.
THAT'S WHAT MAP THE SURVEY OR.
>> THERE SHOULD BE ONE OF THE THINGS WE DID INITIALLY IN SENDING OUT THE SURVEY.
WE PROVIDED THE CAMPUSES WITH INFORMATION IN TERMS OF THE SURVEY LAUNCH AND A LINK TO SHARE WITH TEACHERS TO BE ABLE TO LOOK AT OPPORTUNITIES TO DELIVER OR GIVE UP TO SOME STUDENTS TAKE THE SURVEY IN CLASS.
ALSO, WITH THE ADDITION OF THE QR CODES.
>> ONCE THE SURVEY IS COMPLETED.
IF I GO ON AND DO THE SURVEY, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT SAYS I DID THE SURVEY?
>>. I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW MAYBE WE CAN HAVE SOME COMPETITION BETWEEN CLASSES, BETWEEN CAMPUSES OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
>> IN RESPONSE TO YOUR QUESTION, WHAT I DID YESTERDAY IS I PULL THE LATEST DATA AND I SENT THOSE OUT TO THE CAMPUS EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS IN ORDER TO SHARE WITH THEIR CAMPUSES, IN ORDER TO BOLSTER SOME COMPETITION AMONGST THE CAMPUSES.
AND SO AS WE MOVE CLOSER TO TOMORROW'S DEADLINE, WILL BE LOOKING AT THAT DATA AND SHARING INFORMATION AND GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES TO BOLSTER SOME ADDITIONAL COMPETITION.
>> AND ALSO WHEN YOU'RE DEALING WITH SURVEYS, THE GOAL IS FROM 10-30%, FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS TO RESPOND.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE GOING TO BE LOOKING FOR WITH STUDENTS.
IF WE DON'T GET THAT, WE WILL CONTINUE TO DO OTHER THINGS.
WITH EMPLOYEES, THE RESPONSE RATE IS MORE AROUND AT 25-60%.
SO WE'LL BE PUSHING IT UNTIL WE GET THAT INFORMATION.
AND THE GOOD THING ABOUT THIS SURVEY IS THAT AS SOON AS THE SURVEY'S COMPLETE, THERE'S A DASHBOARD THAT WILL GET IT.
IT'S POPULATED WITH ITSELF UNTIL DRAW A LOT OF REPORTS FOR US AND YOU ALL ABLE TO SEE IT AND WE'LL BE ABLE TO COLLECTIVELY MAKE DECISIONS OFF OF IT.
BUT WE FELT LIKE WE WERE ABLE TO GET THAT STARTED.
BUT WE OBVIOUSLY LISTEN TO OUR STUDENTS.
WE NEED TO PROBABLY DO SOME OTHER THINGS, BUT STUDENTS WHICH WE'LL DO.
>> AND THOSE RESULTS WILL BE AS A FUTURE REPORT. I DON'T KNOW.
>> AWESOME, THANK YOU. TRUSTEE ROBINSON.
>> WELL, MY QUESTION IS REALLY QUICK.
IS THE SURVEY STAKEHOLDERS SPECIFIC MEANING ARE FACULTY AND STAFF TAKING ONE SURVEY, STUDENTS TAKEN ANOTHER, HARRIS TAKING ANOTHER, OR IS IT ALL JUST UNIFORM?
>> YES. SO THEY'RE ALL TAKING DIFFERENT SURVEYS.
>> MY QUESTION WAS OR STAFF MEMBERS, DO THEY HAVE TO ENTER THEIR EMPLOYEE ID NUMBER? WOULD IT BE IDENTIFIABLE WHEN THEY ANSWERED? SAME THING WITH STUDENTS AS THEY ENTER THEIR STUDENT ID.
IS THAT IDENTIFIABLE? OR THE NONETHELESS.
>> THEY THEY DO HAVE TO ENTER THE STUDENT ID NUMBER AND THE EMAIL ADDRESSES IS A UNIQUE LINK FOR THE TEACHERS.
HOWEVER, IT'S A MECHANISM BEING USED NOT TO TRACK INDIVIDUAL RESPONDENTS, BUT MORE SO TO TRAP CAMPUS PARTICIPATION IN THE END NEEDS IN SPECIFIC AREAS.
>> COULD THAT BE EXPLAINED? MAYBE IF WE'RE BELOW THEM AND 25% TARGET, MAYBE ALLOW PEOPLE TO KNOW THAT YOU'RE NOT BEING TRACKED.
THAT THIS IS HERE DOESN'T LIKE YOU JUST EXPLAINED.
>> WE ACTUALLY CAN AND I CAN TELL YOU THAT WE'RE VERY LIKELY TO BE WELL ABOVE THE PARTICIPATION RATE.
I THINK WHEN WE TAKE YESTERDAY AND THE LOSS OF THE DAY, THE NUMBERS ARE PRETTY CLOSE TO BEING AT THE LOWER LEVEL OF THE RESPONSE RATES.
SO WE FEEL LIKE WE'LL BE ABLE TO GET THERE.
BUT IF WE SEE THAT THERE'S AN ISSUE, ABSOLUTELY, WE CAN EMPHASIZE THAT.
>> YES MA'AM WE DO CURRENTLY, DEFINITELY WITH THE STAFF.
SO WE ARE NOW AT THE STUDENT'S SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE PROGRAM.
[7.0 Student School Board Trustee Program]
AGENDA ITEM 7.1. SO WE'LL HAVE SOME FORMAL INTRODUCTIONS AND UPDATES FROM OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES, DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE ARE DEFINITELY EXCITED TO BRING FORWARD THIS NEXT ITEM IS THE PERSON WHO WILL BE SHARING THIS ITEM,
[01:40:01]
SORRY, MISS SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE.>> MADAM PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND DR. MCFARLAND HAD GREAT INPUT TONIGHT AND THROUGHOUT THE YEAR FROM OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES LAST YEAR WAS OUR PILOT YEAR OR SILVERLIGHT TO BRING IT BACK THIS YEAR TO VERY FAMILIAR FACES WHO'VE ALREADY BEEN INVOLVED TONIGHT FROM CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, WE HAVE SARAH ABRAHAM AND NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL.
WE HAVE JANE MAYFIELD BOTH SENIORS, AND WE HAVE A GROUP PICTURE OF SOME OF OUR OTHER STUDENT TRUSTEES WILL BE HEARING FROM THIS SCHOOL YEAR.
AND WHAT WE'VE ASKED OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES TONIGHT AND GOING FORWARD, BECAUSE THERE'S SO MANY THINGS HAPPENING AT THEIR CAMPUS AND ACROSS THE DISTRICT TO SHARE WITH US SOME OF THEIR CELEBRATIONS, ALSO SOME OF THE CAMPUS EVENTS, AND ALSO JUST SOME CONSIDERATIONS THEY'D LIKE TO SHARE WITH THE BOARD FROM THEIR PERSPECTIVE CAMPUSES.
SO I WOULD LIKE TO HAND IT OVER TO OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES TO TALK ABOUT THOSE THREE C'S.
>> THANK YOU. WE HAD A CLASS DECORATION CONTEXT, AND EACH CLASS HAD TO PICK A THEME.
SENIORS, WE WERE CHILDHOOD NOSTALGIA, SO OF COURSE YOU ALL KNOW, WE DECKED OUT THE WHOLE HALLWAY IN DISNEY THEME THINGS AND EVERYTHING THAT REMINDED US OF CHILDHOOD AND THE SOPHOMORES, THEY DECORATED ALICE IN WONDERLAND AND THEY ENDED UP WINNING BUT I WOULD SAY IT'S WELL-DESERVED BECAUSE THE WHOLE ENTIRE HALLWAY LOOKS LIKE A WONDERLAND.
[NOISE] AND FOR HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH, OUR STUDENT COUNCIL, WE HANDED OUT FLOWERS OF RED, WHITE, AND YELLOW TO CELEBRATE KIDS DURING LUNCHES AND YOU CAN SEE THAT IN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THAT ON OUR TIKTOK, AND IT WAS HONESTLY JUST VERY FUN BECAUSE EVERYBODY'S FACE LIGHTS UP WHEN THEY'RE HANDED SOMETHING, OR THEY RECEIVE A FLOWER, OR THEY RECEIVE A NOTICE THAT, HEY, YOU'RE HERE AND I RECOGNIZE THAT.
ONE OF MY CELEBRATIONS THAT ARE ALREADY MENTIONED BEFORE, WOULD IT BE THAT WE RECEIVE 13 MILLION IN SENIOR SCHOLARSHIPS FOR OUR EXTRAVAGANZA THAT THEY HOSTED IN THE AUDITORIUM AND NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL.
LIKE I SAID PREVIOUSLY, WE EARNED IN ONE DAY, I THINK 9.3 OR 9.2 MILLION IN ONE DAY AND THEN WE TRANSFERRED BACK TO 13.
MOVING ON, OUR CHEERLEADERS WON FIRST PLACE FOR A GAME DAY COMPETITION AND I GOT THE INFORMATION FROM MY CHEERLEADER FRIEND, HEARD, MYSELF, AND SHE IS THE CAPTAIN THERE, SO BRAVO TO HER AND HER TEAM.
I WOULD LOVE TO SAY THAT MY TEAM ON NORTH CROWLEY, OUR VARSITY FOOTBALL TEAM, HAS REMAINED UNDEFEATED AND OUR SENIOR NIGHT IS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27TH, MEANING SENIORS WILL BE WALKING ON THE FIELD BEING CONGRATULATED, OR THE PEOPLE THAT ARE PARTICIPATING IN EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES ARE GOING TO BE HONORED BY WALKING DOWN THE FIELD WITH THEIR TRUSTED FAMILY AND PEERS.
IT'S JUST GOING TO BE A NIGHT TO REMEMBER SO MAKE SURE YOU LOOK FORWARD TO THAT.
I'D LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THAT OUR THEATER PERFORMANCE OF CLUE IS NOVEMBER 8TH THROUGH 10TH.
IF YOU'RE INTERESTED, PLEASE PARTICIPATE AND JUST EXPERIENCED THE RIDE WITH THEM BECAUSE I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO BRING MORE ATTENTION TO THEM AND YEAH. THANK YOU.
>> AS FAR AS CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL'S CAMPUS EVENTS, WE'RE CURRENTLY HOSTING THE FOOD DRIVE, PANTRY OF PLENTY CANNED FOOD DRIVE AGAINST NORTH CROWLEY AND THE WINNER OF THE FOOD DRIVE WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE GAME NEXT THURSDAY.
AND WE'RE GOING TO DONATE ALL OF THOSE PROCEEDINGS TO CROWLEY HOUSE OF HOPE AND I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A WHOLE BOX I PROMISED YOU.
[LAUGHTER] ANOTHER THING I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT IS US AS STUDENT COUNCIL, WE'RE PRODUCING A RECAP VIDEO OF OUR ACTIVITIES FOR THIS FIRST SEMESTER, INCLUDING THINGS SUCH AS THE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY INDUCTION CEREMONY LAST NIGHT, 74 NEW STUDENTS.
IT WAS AMAZING AND OUR SUCCESSFUL RED WOMEN THIS WEEK WE HAVE POSTERS ALL OVER WITH PEOPLE WHO SIGNED OUR RED PAPERS SAYING DRUG-FREE.
AS WELL AS THE AWESOME THINGS LIKE OUR WILD AND OUT PEP RALLY, WHICH I HAD A LOT OF FUN. THANK YOU.
[01:45:04]
>> WELL, THANK YOU, TRUSTEES. IS THERE ONE MORE?
>> A CONSIDERATION FOR THE FUTURE IS THAT THERE'S A BIGGER VARIETY OF FOOD IN OUR CAFETERIA.
AT CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, I CAN CURRENTLY ATTEST THAT THE TWO FOOD OPTIONS YOU HAVE EVERY DAY IS EITHER A CHICKEN SANDWICH OR NACHOS.
I FEEL ESPECIALLY WITH THINGS SUCH AS THE CELEBRATION FROM POINTS OF PRIDE EARLIER, THE SYCAMORE ELEMENTARY AS BEING ABLE TO MAKE GARDENS AND THINGS.
WE CAN HOPEFULLY USE THAT IN THE FUTURE TO SUPPLY OUR CAFETERIAS IN OUR KITCHENS WITH MORE WELL-ROUNDED MEALS, YES.
>> THE SECOND CHARACTER WOULD BE PROMOTING MORE ATTENDANCE AWARENESS.
BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S A TRADITIONAL AWARENESS MONTH, SO LET'S BRING AWARENESS TO THAT BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE NOT ENOUGH OF US ARE PARTICIPATING IN THAT EVENT AND I REALLY WOULD LOVE TO SEE AN INCREASE IN STUDENTS COMING TO SCHOOL. THANK YOU.
>> WONDERFUL. THANK YOU, TRUSTEES.
YOU MENTIONED A COMPETITION WHICH IS THE FOOD PANTRY.
DO YOU HAPPEN TO KNOW THE DATES FOR THE PANTRY AND WHAT GUIDANCE FOR THOSE THAT ARE IN THE AUDIENCE THAT WOULD LIKE TO PARTICIPATE AND SUPPORT THE TWO HIGH SCHOOLS IN THE DRIVE AND FOR THOSE THAT ARE LISTENING ONLINE, CAN YOU SHARE WITH US HOW WE CAN PARTICIPATE?
>> THE COMPETITION OFFICIALLY STARTED LAST THURSDAY AND IT'S GOING TO END ON NOVEMBER 1ST AND OUR SCHOOL, WE'VE BEEN RUNNING IT BY CLASS, BY CLASS.
HAVING AN INCENTIVE FOR STUDENTS WHO BRING THE MOST CANS, I WOULD SAY FOR ALL THE OTHER PEOPLE OTHER THAN STUDENTS WHO WOULD WANT TO PARTICIPATE, BRING THOSE CANS TO SCHOOLS.
OR IF YOU HAVE KIDS RUNNING THROUGH OUR PROGRAM, IF YOU KNOW TEACHERS, THEN PLEASE HAVE THEM TRANSPORT THOSE GOODS TO OUR RESPECTIVE SCHOOLS.
>> WONDERFUL. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHO WINS. THANK YOU.
>> I HAVE A QUESTION. PROMOTING ATTENDANCE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN.
ARE YOU SAYING WE NEED TO DO THAT OR WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY THAT?
>> IN GENERAL, WITH ALL OF OUR AWARENESS MONTHS, I'D LIKE TO ADVOCATE FOR THEM AND JUST GET MORE SUPPORT FROM OUR STUDENTS.
THAT'S IN GENERAL BUT FOR THIS MONTH, SINCE WE'RE GOING THROUGH ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH, I REALLY DON'T THINK THAT IT'S TALKED ABOUT ENOUGH OR THAT IT'S BROUGHT UP ENOUGH THAT OUR STUDENTS NEEDS TO BE COMING INTO CLASS AND NEEDS TO BE PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOL BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT THEY'RE THERE FOR.
BUT I WANT TO ANNOUNCE IT MORE TO OUR STUDENTS AND AN IDEA OFF OF THAT AND FOR A LOT OF THINGS, I THINK WOULD IT BE TO BE AWARDING BASE.
IN EXPLANATION, I'D LIKE TO SAY INSTEAD OF DISCIPLINE OR A DISCIPLINED MINDSET, IT COULD BE TO AWARD THE STUDENTS THAT PARTICIPATE, LIKE YOU SAID EARLIER TO GET MORE PARTICIPATION.
>> NOW HERE'S THE HARD QUESTION.
WITH EVERYTHING THAT YOU JUST SAID, DO YOU THINK YOU COULD GET A GROUP OF STUDENTS TOGETHER AND ORGANIZE SOMETHING SO THAT THEN YOU'RE MAKING POSTERS AND YOU'RE MAKING ANNOUNCEMENTS IN THE MORNING ABOUT ATTENDANCE AND WHATEVER YOUR GROUP DECIDES TO DO, IS THAT SOMETHING THAT YOU COULD DO?
>> THAT IS ABSOLUTELY SOMETHING THAT I CAN DO [LAUGHTER] BECAUSE I ALREADY HAVE CRAFTED EVERYTHING IN MY MIND.
I'M ALREADY THINKING OF PEOPLE I WANT TO INVITE.
>> MEANING HOW FAR I COULD GO WITH THE AWARDS THAT I WANT TO GIVE STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE.
IF THAT'S BRINGING IN CANDY, IF THAT'S PIZZA PARTIES, BRINGING THAT BACK JUST FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
[LAUGHTER] I WOULD LIKE TO DO SO IF POSSIBLE.
>> IT'S JUST THE MONTH OF OCTOBER, RIGHT?
>> I WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE THE AWARD THE AWARD SITUATION THAT I MENTIONED EARLIER THROUGH ALL THE MONTHS, BUT STARTING THIS MONTH,
[01:50:01]
I'D LIKE TO INTRODUCE IT.>> I THINK I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING, I HAVE SOME IDEAS ON THAT [LAUGHTER]
>> I WAS JUST GOING ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT OF MS. DAVIS AND THEN ALSO A TRUSTEE MAYFIELD THAT WE WILL DEFINITELY MEET WITH YOU AND I KNOW DR. WRIGHT AND THE STUDENTS SERVICES DEPARTMENT, THEY'RE WORKING ON SOME THINGS, BUT WE WOULD LOVE TO BE ABLE TO HAVE OUR STUDENT TRUSTEES LEAD THE INITIATIVE.
WE CAN MAKE EVERY MONTH ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH AND JUST STARTING THIS MONTH.
WE'LL FOLLOW UP AND DR. WRIGHT WILL GET WITH YOU ALL AND WE'LL FIGURE OUT HOW WE CAN HAVE A STUDENT-LED ATTENDANCE AWARENESS INITIATIVE.
BEFORE WE HAD STUDENT TRUSTEES, DR. MCFARLAND HAS BROUGHT INTO SUPERINTENDENTS ROUND TABLE AND WE'RE GOING THROUGH SOME OLD PICTURES AND WE FOUND THIS ONE.
[LAUGHTER] ON THE FRONT ROW RIGHT, WE HAVE JAYDEN AND SARAI AS MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO MANY YEARS AGO ESTABLISHED LEADERSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT AND ENGAGEMENT SO WE WERE SO PROUD OF THEM.
WE SEE SOME OTHER FAMILIAR STUDENTS IN THERE AS WELL AND SO I SEE VINCENT JAMES, I SEE ROSE JONES AND SO JUST SO IT'S REALLY SPECIAL FOR US TO WATCH THEM GROW, NOT ONLY AS STUDENTS BUT ALSO LEADERS ON THEIR CAMPUSES, SO GREAT JOB STUDENT TRUSTEES.
>> VERY, VERY NICE. THANK YOU.

>> YES OUR FIRST SPEAKER THIS EVENING IS GARY LAZADA, SO LAZADA.
>> GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT.
MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. MCFARLAND, MY NAME IS GARY LAZADA AND I RESIDE AT 802 DUCK CREEK TRAIL.
I'M HERE TO TALK TO YOU TONIGHT ABOUT GENERAL APPRAISAL DISTRICT.
BEFORE I GET INTO THAT, I'D LIKE TO GIVE YOU JUST A QUICK BACKGROUND OF MYSELF AND WHY I BELIEVE I'M QUALIFIED TO SERVE AGAIN ON THE APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS.
I AM THE PROUD FATHER OF TWO ARLINGTON LAMAR GRADUATES.
I HAVE SERVED ON THE TURN APPRAISAL DISTRICT BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR A TWO-YEAR TERM AND I SPENT SIX YEARS ON THE APPRAISAL REVIEW BOARD AT TARRANT COUNTY.
IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE NEWS,
[01:55:02]
YOU PROBABLY HAVE SEEN A LOT OF NEGATIVE THINGS THAT HAVE COME OUT ABOUT TARRANT.I'M SORRY TO TELL YOU THIS THEY ARE MOSTLY TRUE.
THE CHIEF APPRAISER HAS RECENTLY RESIGNED AND THE CURRENT BOARD IS LOOKING TO REPLACE THAT INDIVIDUAL EITHER BY THE LATTER PART OF THIS YEAR, FIRST PART OF NEXT YEAR.
I HAVE THREE MAJOR GOALS TRYING TO RIGHT THE SHIP, IF YOU WILL, AT TAT.
ONE IS TO HIRE A NEW CHIEF APPRAISER.
WE'VE GOT TO GET THIS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.
WE CAN'T GO THROUGH WHAT WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THE LAST FEW YEARS.
SECONDLY, I WOULD LIKE TO INITIATE AN AUDIT OF THE SOFTWARE SYSTEM AT TARRANT.
IT HAS BEEN VERY QUESTIONABLE, SO IT'S AN EXCEPTION.
IT HAS NOT BEEN FAIR TO THE TAXPAYERS, AND IT DOESN'T PROVIDE A UNIFORM AND EQUAL REQUIREMENTS THAT THE STATE PROPERTY TAX CODE CALLS FOR.
THIRDLY, I THINK THE CULTURE OF TARRANT NEEDS TO CHANGE.
PART OF THAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE BOARD AND PASSING THAT THROUGH TO THE CHIEF APPRAISER THAT THE UNIFORM AN EQUAL ASPECT OF THE CODE NEEDS TO BE IMPLEMENTED.
WE AT TARRANT WHEN I WAS THERE, I TRIED TO ALWAYS ACT IN A IN A CAPACITY THAT WE WERE SERVING TO THE PEOPLE.
I THINK THAT THAT HAS VEERED OFF TRACK A LITTLE BIT, WE NEED TO GET THAT BACK ON TRACK.
LASTLY, I DON'T KNOW HOW MUCH TIME DO I HAVE?
>> OKAY. LASTLY, WE ARE IN THE SEASON NOW FOR THE APPOINTMENT OF THE BOARD MEMBERS.
THAT IS DONE BY ENTITIES SUCH AS YOURSELF, BY YOUR VOTES.
YOU CARRY 137 VOTES, AND BY YOUR VOTE IF YOU WERE TO VOTE FOR ME, YOU WOULD PROBABLY GET A GOOD PERSON IS WILLING TO DO THE JOB.
THE SECOND PART OF THAT I WILL TELL YOU IS THAT WE NEED BOARD MEMBERS THAT ARE ACTIVE.
I'M RETIRED, I'M ENERGETIC, AND I CAN GET IT DONE FOR YOU AND FOR THE CITIZENRY OF TARRANT COUNTY.
I GUESS I CAN'T OPEN IT UP TO QUESTIONS WHICH I LOVE TO DO, BUT I DON'T THINK WE'RE ALLOWED TO DO THAT.
IS THAT TRUE? WELL, THANK YOU VERY MUCH AND YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT EVENING.
>> ARE THERE ANY OTHER SPEAKERS, MR. KIRCHNER? OKAY. THANK YOU.
AT THIS TIME WE'RE AT A CONSENT AGENDA,
[9.0 Consent Agenda]
AND WE HAVE SEVERAL ITEMS ON THE CONSENT AGENDA.THE FIRST ONE IS TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA 9.1, 9.2 IS THE APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER 21ST, THE 2023 REGULAR BOARD MEETING MINUTES AND THE OCTOBER 12TH, 2023 CALLED BOARD MEETING MINUTES.
9.3 IS FINANCIAL STATEMENTS, 9.4 BUDGET AMENDMENT, 9.5 IS 2023/2024 T-TESTS AND P-TEST TEACHER APPRAISERS, 9.6 PURCHASE OF CHILLERS FOR J.
HARD GRAVE ELEMENTARY AND DALLAS PARK ELEMENTARY, 9.7 THE PURCHASE OF BOILERS FOR JACKIE CARDEN ELEMENTARY AND PARKWAY ELEMENTARY AND THEN 9.8 TECHNOLOGY LENDING GRANT, CHROMEBOOK, OR CHESS.
BOARD AT THIS TIME, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS OR REQUESTS REGARDING THE CONSENT AGENDA? HEARING NONE.
IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA?
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, I RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE CONSENT AGENDA AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS. IS THERE A SECOND?
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE ROBINSON. MOVE TO VOTE, PLEASE.
THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY. THANK YOU, BOARD.
WE HAVE ONE CONSIDERATION: A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
[10.0 Consideration and Possible Action Item (s)]
AGENDA ITEM 10.1, WHICH IS THE PURCHASE OF MARCHING BAND TRAILERS FOR CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL AND NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, DR. MCFARLAND.>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, WE ARE EXCITED TO BRING FORWARD WITH THIS NEXT ITEM.
WE HAVE MR. WALKER HERE TO SHARE THIS ITEM, MR. WALKER.
>> GOOD EVENING, MADAM PRESIDENT, DR. MAYFIELD, BOARD MEMBERS AND DR. MCFARLAND.
COME TO YOU THIS EVENING WITH THE BAND TRAILER PRESENTATION, RFP ACTUALLY, IT OPENED SEPTEMBER 13TH AND CLOSED SEPTEMBER 28TH AT 02:00 P.M. LET ME SAY THIS PROCESS CONSISTS OF 9 CISD STAFF MEMBERS, AND WE WERE GUIDED BY NADIA POWERS,
[02:00:01]
AND NADIA POWERS IS A GEM.SHE HEADED THIS PROCESS, AND SHE MADE SURE THAT THE BAND DIRECTORS HAD EVERY DAY THE BAND DIRECTORS AND MS. LOT HAD EVERYTHING THAT THEY WANTED IN THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT.
TWO PROPOSALS WERE SUBMITTED, AND THE RECOMMENDATION WAS FOR CLUBHOUSE TRAILERS AT A COST OF $206,683.22 PER TRAILER, GRAND TOTAL OF $413,366.44.
YOU MAY SAY 413,000 FOR TWO TRAILERS.
THE YOUNG LEARNERS WE HAD UP HERE TO START THE SHOW THEIR KIDS WILL BE ABLE TO BENEFIT FROM THESE TRAILERS.
THE QUALITY OF THESE TRAILERS WILL LAST FOR DECADES.
THANKS A LOT, SIR. THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A TRAILER RIGHT DOWN THE STREET FROM US, AND YOU SEE IT'S CUSTOMIZED.
OUR BAND PROGRAMS WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CUSTOMIZE THEIR OWN TRAILER WHATEVER THEY WANT TO PUT ON IT.
THEY MADE THESE DESIGNS; THEY GET TOGETHER, COME UP WITH THE DESIGNS, SEND IT TO THE COMPANY, AND THIS IS WHAT WE GIVE YOU COULD PICTURE CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL, NORTH CROWLEY HIGH SCHOOL THEIR OWN ARTWORK ON THEIR BRANDED FOR THE CANVAS.
YOU SAW THE OUTSIDE OF THE TRAILER HOUSE CUSTOMIZED, INSIDE THE TRAILER ALSO IS CUSTOMIZED.
IF YOU NOTICE, THERE ARE TWO SECTIONS SO THIS TRAILER ACTUALLY HAS A SECOND FLOOR.
THE BOTTOM FLOOR IS ABOUT 53 FEET LONG, AND AS YOU SEE, THERE'S LIGHTS UNDERNEATH AND AT THE TOP ON THE FRONT PICTURE, YOU SEE LED LIGHTING.
THERE'S ALSO LED LIGHTING AT THE BOTTOM UNDERNEATH AS WELL.
YOU CAN PUT INSTRUMENTS NOT ONLY AT THE BOTTOM BUT ALSO AT THE TOP.
YOU SEE THE SHELVING ON BOTH SIDES IN THE FRONT PICTURE; IN THE BACK PICTURE, YOU ALSO SEE SOME SHELVING ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE THAT'S A DIRECTOR'S PORT, THAT'S A DIRECTOR'S PORT AND ON THE LEFT IS A SOUSAPHONE.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. SOUSAPHONE: RIGHT UNDERNEATH THAT LARGE SPACE ON YOUR LEFT, THAT'S WHERE THE SOUSAPHONES WOULD GO AND UP TOP CASE INSTRUMENTS.
NOW THE CARPET IS DESIGNED FOR LACK OF A BETTER TERM, TO KEEP THE INSTRUMENTS VELCROED INTO PLACE.
THE SECOND PICTURE IS THE DRUM WALL, AND YOU SEE A DRUM HARNESS HANGING FROM THE TOP GRID.
THOSE GRIDS WERE DESIGNED FOR THE DRUM HARNESSES, AND THEN THE NEXT PICTURE ON THE THIRD PICTURE ON THE RIGHT IS ALSO A DRUM WALL, AS WELL AND LIKE I SAID, THOSE SHELVES WERE CARPETED TO KEEP THE INSTRUMENTS IN PLACE.
NEXT SLIDE, SIR. COLOR GUARD; EVERY INCH OF SQUARE FOOT OF THIS TRAILER IS DESIGNED FOR SOMETHING, AND AS YOU SEE RIGHT THERE, YOU SEE THE COLOR GAURDS, MOST IMPORTANT PART, THE RAMP FOR THE SAFETY OF NOT ONLY OUR EDUCATORS BUT ALSO OF OUR LEARNERS AS WELL.
POWER SUPPLY: IT COMES WITH A SOLAR-POWERED POWER SUPPLY, AND SO IT HAS A BATTERY TO IT, AND IF THAT BATTERY WAS TO FOR WHATEVER REASON WE HAVE A WEEK WITH NO SUN, DIM SKIES, THEY LEAVE IT ON, IT DRAINS THE BATTERY.
BOTH CAMPUSES HAVE GENERATORS, AND THEY COULD START THOSE GENERATORS, PLUG THOSE GENERATORS UP TO THE TRAILERS, AND THEY'RE BACK IN BUSINESS.
THAT IS MY POWERPOINT PRESENTATION, SO WE'RE PREPARED TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THAT YOU MAY HAVE FOR US AT THIS TIME.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH, MR. WALKER. I APPRECIATE IT.
I AM BUBBLING WITH JOY BECAUSE I'VE HEARD FROM PARENTS OVER THE YEARS AND STUDENTS THE DESIRE TO HAVE THIS, AND SO FOR ME, AFTER A GAME SEEING THOSE STUDENTS WITH ALL OF THOSE YELLOW BUSES, THAT THEY HAVE TO USE THOSE INDIVIDUAL BUSES, OR WHEN WE TRAVEL FAR, THEY HAVE TO RENT A U-HAUL OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT.
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD INVESTMENT INTO OUR SCHOOLS AND TO OUR STUDENTS, SO I APPRECIATE YOU FOR THE WORK THAT YOU'VE DONE ON THE RFP AND GETTING US TO THIS POINT.
I HAD A QUESTION WHICH WAS; THE COST INCLUSIVE OF THE DESIGN OF THE OUTSIDE OF THE TRAILERS.
AND YOU ANSWERED THAT DURING YOUR PRESENTATION SO THANK YOU SO MUCH.
I'M SUPER EXCITED, AND I KNOW TRUSTEE DAVIS IS GOING TO HAVE [LAUGHTER] BECAUSE SHE'S JUST AS EXCITED.
ALL OF US ARE, BUT WE TALK ABOUT THIS ALL THE TIME, SO TRUSTEE DAVIS, DID YOU HAVE ANY COMMENTS?
>> I DON'T KNOW WHERE IT BEGAN.
[02:05:03]
IT'S BEEN SOMETHING THAT I'VE TALKED ABOUT, FAN THROUGH THE YEARS.MR. GASSIA, WOULD YOU AGREE? [LAUGHTER].
>> BUT WHAT I LIKE ABOUT WHAT THIS IS GOING TO DO FOR OUR STUDENTS.
I HAVE BEEN AT BAND COMPETITIONS, AND I'VE SEEN THIS KIND OF VEHICLE THERE FOR OTHER DISTRICTS, AND THEN I'VE SEEN, LIKE DR. MAYFIELD SAID, WHAT WE HAVE, WHAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE, AND THEY JUST DESERVE THE BEST.
THEY JUST DESERVE TO HAVE THE SAME KINDS OF THINGS AS OTHER DISTRICTS.
THIS MAKES ME VERY HAPPY FOR OUR STUDENTS AND VERY PROUD THAT NOW WE'RE GOING TO LOOK LIKE WHO WE ARE, SO THANK YOU.
>> I'M JUST CURIOUS: WHAT IS THE ANTICIPATED DELIVERY TIME? BECAUSE THAT'S A LOT OF CUSTOMIZATIONS.
>> YES SIR, IT'S A 12-MONTH PROCESS, SO SOON AS WE GET TO PO, WE GET APPROVAL, AND WE GET THAT PO OUT NEXT WEEK.
WE'LL GET IT OUT AS SOON AS WE CAN.
>> WE WANT THEM TO HURRY UP SO WE CAN HAVE IT AT THE START AT THE SEASON NEXT YEAR, BUT THANK YOU.
>> LET ME SAY THIS; THIS WAS BROUGHT TO RANDALL REEVES AND I BY DR. MCFARLAND LAST JUNE, AND HE SAID, HEY, GET US SOMETHING GOOD; BRING IT TO THE BOARD, AND MS. LONDON COMING INTO DISTRICT, SHE WAS OUTSTANDING IN THE PROCESS AS WELL, HER AND THE BAND DIRECTORS.
>> I CAN'T EVEN BEGIN TO TELL YOU THE EXCITEMENT AND ENTHUSIASM THAT I HAVE.
WHEN I PURCHASED THE TRAILER FOR NORTH CROWLEY AND SAW ALL OF THE THINGS THAT IT TOOK TO GO INTO, LIKE YOU'D MENTIONED, THAT LED LIGHTING, THE RAMPS.
NOW, THE COOL THING ABOUT THESE TRAILERS IS THAT THESE ARE LOW-BOY TRAILERS.
THESE ARE MOVING TRAILERS THAT YOU SEE WITH MAYFLOWER.
>> THESE ARE THE TRAILERS THAT YOU SEE WITH THEM, AND THESE ARE THIS HIGH OFF THE GROUND.
LOOK AT THAT [LAUGHTER] NOW THIS IS A TCU TRAILER WHICH IS EXTREMELY DECKED OUT.
BUT WHEN YOU TAKE THE RAMPS THAT WE PURCHASED, MIKE MADDOX PURCHASED THESE FOR NORTH CROWLEY, AND WE DID THE BEST THAT WE COULD, AND THE RISE TO RUN ON A STANDARD BOX 53-FOOT SEMI-TRAILER IS PROBABLY FOUR FEET, AND YOU ONLY HAVE 8 FEET.
YOU'RE PUSHING MARIMBAS, YOU'RE PUSHING UP SOUSAPHONES, YOU'RE PUSHING UP MASSIVE 100-GALLON JUGS OF WATER UP A RAMP, AND YOU'RE HOPING THAT THESE KIDS THEIR LEGS AREN'T GOING TO GIVE OUT THE PARENTS WHO ARE 50, AND THEY'RE LIKE, WE CAN DO GUYS, LET'S DO IT.
THIS IS ALL JUST UNBELIEVABLE.
THE ONE ON THE RIGHT, RIGHT THERE, THAT RAMP, I MEAN, THAT IS JUST UNBELIEVABLE AND THEN TO HAVE THE STORAGE UNDERNEATH FOR THE COLOR GUARD AND EVERYTHING, THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE. [APPLAUSE] UNBELIEVABLE. TO POINT IT OUT TO MRS. DAVIS COMMENT, I'VE BEEN IN THIS DISTRICT A LONG TIME.
I'VE SEEN THE BAND COMPETITIONS WHERE YOU HAVE HEBRON, YOU HAVE LD BELL, YOU HAVE LAMAR, YOU HAVE ALL OF THESE GREAT SCHOOLS AND EVERY SINGLE YEAR, I'M LIKE, SOMEDAY WE'RE GOING TO BE CLASSIFIED AS ONE OF THOSE GREAT SCHOOLS, AND THE TIME HAS COME.
IT'S JUST GREAT. IT REALLY IS.
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, IS IT OKAY IF I COMMENT?
[02:10:02]
I JUST LIKE TO SAY THAT AS A FORMER DANCER AND AS A MUSIC LOVER, I REALLY APPRECIATE MY BAND TEAM, I APPRECIATE IT ALL BAND TEAMS. I APPRECIATE EVERYBODY'S ENTHUSIASM TOWARDS JUST SUPPORTING THEM.I HAVE A LOT OF BAND FRIENDS AND THEY REALLY, THEY WORK SO HARD, THEY STRUGGLE AND THEY GRIND.
I JUST REALLY APPRECIATE THIS MOVEMENT.
I'M REALLY HOPING THAT IT JUST LIFTS THEM TO DO BETTER AND IT ENCOURAGES THEM ALWAYS.
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT I'M SUPER HAPPY ABOUT IT BECAUSE IT'S VERY RARE THAT YOU SEE SOMETHING OF THIS MAGNITUDE FOR FINE ARTS.
USUALLY FINE ARTS IS SHOVED ASIDE IN SUPPORT OF OTHER ATHLETICS AND SPORTS.
I'M GLAD TO SEE EVERYTHING IS BEING EQUALED OUT.
THAT'S REALLY EXCITING TO SEE. THANK YOU.
>> IT'S A NEW DAY OF FINE ARTS IN CROWLEY ISD.
>> BECAUSE I HAD THE ONE COMMENT.
I SAW THE BAND STUDENTS THIS PAST SATURDAY LOADING UP THEIR EQUIPMENT.
JUST TO SEE EVERY STUDENT AND HOW THEY HAVE TO GO AND PACK ON A BUS, AND NOW YOU CAN GET EVERYTHING IN ONE VEHICLE.
I'M HAPPY FOR THE DISTRICT AND I'M HAPPY FOR OUR STUDENTS.
>> THANK YOU AGAIN, MR. WALKER.
>> JUST ONE LAST COMMENT. THE REASON THAT WE'RE ABLE TO DO THIS IS BECAUSE OUR COMMUNITY SAW FIT TO APPROVE THE BOND, AND THIS WAS AN ITEM THAT WAS A PART OF OUR BONDS.
I JUST THINK THAT IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US, OUR COMMUNITY TO SAY THEY WANT THE BEST FOR OUR KIDS, WE'RE DELIVERING ON THAT.
THANK YOU BOARD FOR JUST SETTING THAT VISION AS WELL.
BUT I ALSO THINK IT'S OUR COMMUNITY FOR VOTING TO SUPPORT THE BOND.
THIS IS ONE PROJECT THAT WAS A KEY PART OF THE BOND ELECTION.
DON'T WALK AWAY, THIS IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM.
BOARD, IS THERE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE PURCHASE? DID I HEAR [LAUGHTER]? I HEARD THIS AIR OVER HERE.
>> I RECOMMEND THE APPROVAL OF THE PURCHASE OF TWO MARCHING BAND TRAILERS AS PRESENTED.
>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE GRASSIA.
WITH ENTHUSIASM, THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.
[APPLAUSE] WE DO HAVE A FUTURE ACTION ITEM.
[11.0 Future Action Item(s)]
THIS IS NEW COURSE OFFERINGS FOR THE 2024/2025 SCHOOL YEAR. DR. MCFARLAND?>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, AS YOU ALL KNOW, WE ALL OFTEN CLAIM THAT DIVERSITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER AND WE RECOGNIZE THE POWER OF DIVERSITY.
WE'RE HERE TONIGHT TO PRESENT AN ADDITIONAL COURSE AND WE BELIEVE THAT THIS COURSE WILL ADD TO THE DIVERSITY OF OUR CURRICULUM OFFERINGS, BUT ALSO REALLY GIVE US AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO THOSE THINGS, TO SHOW THOSE THINGS THAT WE SAY ARE IMPORTANT, TO SHOW THAT THEY REALLY ARE IMPORTANT. MS. ROWE
>> MADAM PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, DR. MCFARLAND, WE'RE EXCITED TONIGHT TO BRING A FUTURE ACTION ITEM FOR A NEW COURSE PROPOSAL FOR CROWLEY ISD AND AN OFFERING FOR OUR STUDENTS.
SO BACK IN 2020, BECAUSE OF YOUR SUPPORT AND SEEING THAT DIVERSITY IS OUR SUPERPOWER, WE WERE ABLE TO ADD INNOVATIVE COURSES INTO OUR CORE SELECTION GUIDE THROUGH ETHNIC STUDIES.
WE BEGAN IN THE YEAR 2020 TO 2021, ADDING AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES AND FOLLOW THE NEXT YEAR WITH MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES.
BOTH OF THESE COURSES ALLOW OUR STUDENTS A DEEP LOOK INTO THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE CULTURES, TRADITIONS, CUSTOMS, LANGUAGES, AND REALLY HELPS PUSH THE RELEVANCE AND CONNECTION TO CURRENT ISSUES AND HOW HISTORICAL CONTEXT SHAPES THE WORLD THAT WE LIVE IN TODAY.
CURRENTLY, IN OUR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES COURSES, WE SERVE 485 STUDENTS.
IN OUR MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES, WE HAVE 224 STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THESE ETHNIC STUDIES COURSES AT THIS TIME.
TONIGHT WE BRING A PROPOSAL TO ADD A THIRD OPTION FOR OUR STUDENTS, AND THIS OPTION IS NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES.
THESE ARE OFFERED TO OUR 10TH TO 12TH GRADERS.
[02:15:03]
NATIVE AMERICAN STUDIES EXPLORE AS NATIVE NATIONS AND THE PERSPECTIVES ROOTED IN NATIVE AMERICANS AND REALLY VALUING THEIR VOICE AND REALLY ALLOWS OUR STUDENTS TO UNDERSTAND THE IMPACT OF HISTORY ON THE PRESENT DAY.THIS COURSE HAS BEEN APPROVED BY TEA, AND AT THIS TIME, THIS COURSE IS AN ELECTIVE.
BUT BY THE END OF THE YEAR, THEY BELIEVE THEY WILL HAVE STANDARDS THAT WILL ALLOW THIS TO ALSO COUNT AS A SOCIAL STUDIES CREDIT FOR THE STATE OF TEXAS.
WITH THAT, THAT IS OUR PROPOSAL FOR FUTURE ACTION FOR A NEW COURSE PROPOSAL
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? YES.
MY SON TAKES AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES AND I WANTED HIM TO TAKE MEXICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES.
ALSO, THAT HE IS TAKING ECONOMICS AND THEY WERE LIKE HE HAS TOO MANY SOCIAL STUDIES CREDITS, SO HE CAN'T DO IT.
I WAS LIKE, HOW CAN I SEQUENCE [LAUGHTER] THIS? BUT I LOVE IT BECAUSE AS A JUNIOR YOU TAKE THE US HISTORY EOC.
WHAT I WAS ASKING HIM WAS HOW DO THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES RELATE TO YOUR US HISTORY THIS YEAR, AND HOW CAN WE STREAMLINE TOPICS, TALK ABOUT CURRENT EVENTS THAT ARE HAPPENING, AND HOW DO WE WEAVE WHAT YOU LEARNED HERE WITH WHAT THE FIRST SEMESTER IS LIKE UP INTO RECONSTRUCTION MEASURES? BUT JUST HAVING THAT BACKGROUND AND THAT KNOWLEDGE IN NOT ONLY FOR AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS, BUT ALL STUDENTS.
TAKING IT AND SEEING THAT INTERSECTIONALITY, I THINK IS WONDERFUL.
IS THERE A REASON WHY THESE COURSES DON'T START FRESHMAN YEAR?
>> IN FRESHMAN YEAR, THEY DO TAKE A WORLD GEOGRAPHY OR HUMAN GEOGRAPHY AP.
>> BECAUSE I WAS LIKE, WE NEED TO GET RID OF THAT HUMAN GEOGRAPHY IN SEQUENCES DIFFERENTLY.
BUT I'M EXCITED TO SEE THIS AND I'M EXCITED FOR THE STUDENTS WHO HAD THE ABILITY TO TAKE PART IN THESE FOUR COURSES AND LEARN ABOUT THEMSELVES.
I KNEW THAT TRUSTEE ROBINSON WAS GOING TO BEAT ME TO THE BUTTON ON THAT, SO I'M GOING TO SHARE IN HER SENTIMENTS ABOUT THE EXCITEMENT OVER THE ADDITION OF THIS COURSE.
I ALSO WANT TO THANK YOU HEATHROW FOR STICKING WITH IT BECAUSE A LOT OF PEOPLE IMPLEMENTED COURSES, AND THEN THEY REALLY DIDN'T REVISIT THEM.
SO NOT ONLY DO WE HAVE THESE COURSES AVAILABLE, IT LOOKS LIKE OUR STUDENTS ARE TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IT.
SO WE HAVE FULL COURSE LOADS FOR TEACHERS, AND SO IT'S BEING VALUED.
I'M ALSO EXCITED FOR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO SEE THEMSELVES.
AND JUST AT A TIME WHERE WE ARE RIGHT NOW IN OUR COUNTRY, I THINK IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE HISTORICAL CONTEXT AND THAT WE PROVIDE THESE SUBJECTS AND THE AVAILABILITY OF THEM.
THANK YOU FOR STAYING ON TOP OF IT.
I SEE THAT YOU HAVE IT LISTED HERE AS A SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE, SO IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE GOING TO BE OPTIMISTIC THAT IT WILL BE APPROVED AS SUCH NEXT YEAR.
TODAY AS A MATTER OF FACT OUR CONTENT COORDINATOR, MR. DUNN IS AT A CONFERENCE RIGHT NOW AND THEY ARE VERY CONFIDENT THAT THEY'LL HAVE THE STANDARDS READY IN THE SPRING FOR IT TO BE A SOCIALS CREDIT.
>> THEN WE'LL HAVE ASIAN-AMERICAN STUDIES?
>> [LAUGHTER] THAT WAS A QUESTION THAT WE ASKED TODAY AND WE HAD HIM RESEARCH AS WELL.
THAT HAS CURRENTLY BEEN TALKED ABOUT WITH TEA AND I KNOW THEY PUT OUT SOME PUBLIC COMMENT, BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN APPROVED YET AS A COURSE OFFERING.
BUT WE WILL CONTINUE TO SEEK THAT OUT.
AND THERE'S ALSO OPTION FOR US TO BUILD AN INNOVATIVE COURSE IF WE WANT TO CONTINUE TO GROW THE ETHNIC STUDIES PROGRAM.
>> ANY OTHER COMMENTS? WE'RE LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING MORE, SO THANK YOU.
YES, TRUSTEE ABRAM, [LAUGHTER] THANK YOU.
>> AS A PERSON WHO DID AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDIES LAST YEAR, I REALLY, REALLY LOVED THE CLASS.
THAT WAS MY FAVORITE CLASS OF THE DAY, BECAUSE A LOT OF MINORITY CULTURES ARE HONESTLY OVERLOOKED IN TODAY'S SOCIETY.
WHEN YOU LOOK IN HISTORY BOOKS, IT'S VERY RARE THAT YOU SEE PEOPLE OF MY COMPLEXION OR OF OTHER COMPLEXIONS THAT WE SEE SO OFTEN REPRESENTED IN AMERICA.
ESPECIALLY, WITH CURRENT EVENTS GOING ON WITH NATIVE AMERICANS AND CONCERNING THEIR RIGHTS AND EVERYTHING, I THINK THIS IS A REALLY NEEDED COURSE, AND I'M SO GLAD ATTENTION IS BEING BROUGHT.
[02:20:03]
