>> THANK YOU. MR. PRESIDENT, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND DR. MCFARLAND.

THIS RECOGNITION TONIGHT ALIGNS WITH ALL THREE GOALS HERE IN CROWLEY ISD, THRIVING STUDENTS, ENGAGED COMMUNITY, AND EMPOWERED STAFF BECAUSE IT TOOK ALL THREE OF THOSE FOR AN EVENT OF THIS MAGNITUDE AND SIZE TO MAKE IT A SUCCESS.

LAST MONTH, WE HAD HUNDREDS OF STUDENTS GATHER TOGETHER AT RICHARD J. ALLIE MIDDLE SCHOOL TO COMPETE IN A VARIETY OF ELEMENTARY UIL SUBJECTS.

TONIGHT, WE'RE GOING TO HEAR FROM THE ORGANIZERS AND A FEW OF OUR FIRST PLACE WINNERS ARE EXCITED TO INTRODUCE.

AS THEY'RE MAKING THEIR WAY TO THE PODIUM, WE'RE GOING TO LET YOU WATCH THIS SHORT VIDEO THAT WAS ON OUR SOCIAL MEDIA REELS JUST THAT FOR DAY AND SOME OF THE FUN ACTIVITIES HAPPENING.

>> UIL.

>> READ AND WRITING AND NUMBER SENTENCE.

>> READ AND WRITING.

>> STORY TELLING.

>> CREATIVE WRITING.

>> CREATIVE WRITING.

>> [INAUDIBLE].

>> JUST A VERY SHORT GLIMPSE OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING THERE AT RICHARD. J. ALLIE MIDDLE SCHOOL.

HERE TO TELL US MORE, I'M EXCITED TO INTRODUCE TWO OF OUR ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS HERE AT CROWLEY ISD, MS. ROSE EATMON FROM SUE CROUCH AND MR. GERY MORENO FROM J.

A. HARGRAVE. HELLO.

>> THANK YOU, MR. KIRCHNER.

GOOD EVENING, MEMBERS OF THE SCHOOL BOARD, AND DR. MCFARLAND.

I AM ROSE EATMON, THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AT SUE CROUCH ELEMENTARY AND THE DISTRICT ELEMENTARY UIL COORDINATOR.

THIS YEAR, THE ELEMENTARY ACADEMIC UIL COMPETITION CONTINUED TO GROW.

IF YOU CAN LOOK AT LAST YEAR'S DATA COMPARED TO THIS YEAR'S DATA, WE ONLY HAD 700 STUDENTS.

WHEN I SAY ONLY, IT'S GROWING.

WHEN I FIRST CAME TO THE DISTRICT, 6, 7 YEARS AGO, UIL WAS HELD AT TCC AROUND 300 STUDENTS.

WE'RE NOW UP TO 734 STUDENTS.

WE HAD 123 TEACHERS AND STAFF COACH AND OR JUDGE THE EVENTS, 14 ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS.

WE HAVE BOTH SPANISH AND ENGLISH COMPETITIONS.

WE'RE THE ONLY LOCAL DISTRICT THAT TRANSLATE OUR MATERIALS INTO SPANISH.

IT WAS HELD AT RAMS BECAUSE WE NEEDED A LARGER FACILITY.

WE'RE GROWING. SYCAMORE ELEMENTARY HAD 85 CONTESTANTS.

THEY WANTED TO HAVE MORE, LIKE, NO, WE GOT TO CUT OFF.

THEN PARKWAY HAD 80 CONTESTANTS.

NOT ONLY DID WE FEED THEIR ACADEMICS, WE FED THEIR SOULS ALSO.

WE WERE ABLE TO PROVIDE 150 BREAKFASTS AND 300 STUDENTS WERE SERVED FREE LUNCH THAT DAY.

WHAT IS UIL? UIL IS THE LARGEST ACADEMIC COMPETITION IN THE DISTRICT ON THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.

IT IS THE LARGEST ONE.

WHEN I SAY THE LARGEST,

[00:05:01]

WE HAVE BOTH MATH, READING, WRITING, SPELLING, AND ACTING, ALL WHICH ARE ON TIME LIMITS.

IF YOU GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, THIS IS AN EXAMPLE OF A 60 QUESTION, MENTAL MATH TEST, 10 MINUTES.

THERE COULD BE NO ERASURES, THERE COULD BE ANY NOTES ON THE SIDE.

IT'S TIME. THE STUDENTS, THEY'RE VERY SERIOUS.

IF YOU LOOK AT THEM, THEY'RE VERY SERIOUS, THEY'RE READY TO GET STARTED.

THESE STUDENTS OUT OF THE ENTIRE DISTRICT, JUST SAY FOR FOURTH GRADE, WE HAVE 1,000-1,200 STUDENTS, EACH CAMPUS CAN ONLY SELECT THREE STUDENTS AND ONE ALTERNATE.

THESE ARE THE BEST OF THE BEST.

WHEN WE HAVE FIRST PLACE WINNERS COME TO THE BOARD, THESE ARE FIRST PLACE OUT OF 60-75 STUDENTS WHO COMPETE IN THE EVENT.

THESE STUDENTS ARE DOING AMAZING THINGS IN OUR DISTRICT.

>> BUT KEEP IN MIND, THOSE STUDENTS ARE OUT OF MAYBE 1,000 STUDENTS PER GRADE LEVEL IN THE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

NOT JUST TOP OF THE SCHOOL BUT TOP OF THE WHOLE SCHOOL DISTRICT.

>> LIKE MR. KIRCHNER SAID, WE'RE NOT ONLY HIGHLIGHTING THE SUCCESS ACADEMICALLY, BUT AS YOU WILL SEE IN OUR FIRST PLACE WINNER, THIS IS A DIVERSE COMPETITION.

ALL SCHOOLS, SECOND THROUGH FIFTH GRADE IN CROWLEY ISD COMPETED THIS YEAR.

WE HAD 100% PARTICIPATION AT EVERY CAMPUS.

AS WE GO THROUGH, WE DO HAVE A FEW OF OUR FIRST PLACE WINNERS WHO ACTUALLY CAME TO THE BOARD MEETING TODAY, BUT I WANT YOU TO JUST TO SEE OUT OF OUR COMPETITION, BOTH ENGLISH AND SPANISH COMPETITIONS, WE HAVE FIRST PLACE WINNERS FROM EVERY CAMPUS, ALMOST EVERY CAMPUS.

THIS IS A A GREAT FEAT.

I LOVE UIL.

I ALWAYS SAY BEING A GEEK IS COOL.

[LAUGHTER] ACADEMICS ARE COOL.

I WAS IN BAND.

I DID UIL WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, MY KIDS DID UIL, SO THIS REALLY WARMS MY HEART WHEN I SEE STUDENTS GROWING FROM WHEN I FIRST STARTED BEING A COACH TO NOW HELPING COORDINATING WITH ALL 16 CAMPUSES.

IIT'S JUST IT GOES BACK TO BEING PART OF CROWLEY PRIDE UNIFIED.

WE'RE EMPOWERING OUR STAFF BECAUSE WE HAVE COACHES.

WE ACTUALLY HAVE A COACH HERE ALSO. MS. CRAVER.

SHE CAME TODAY TO THE BOARD MEMBER AND SHE COACHES MATH, THE MENTAL MATH.

SHE'S TEACHING THE KIDS STRATEGIES, NOT ONLY CAN THEY USE FOR THE COMPETITION, BUT THEY CAN USE IN THEIR CLASSROOM.

IT'S ALL EMPOWERING EVENT FOR OUR STAFF, FOR OUR COMMUNITY, AND FOR OUR STUDENTS.

>> AS MS. EATMON CALLED UP FIRST PLACE WINNERS, IF YOU SEE YOUR NAME AND PICTURE UP HERE, I WOULD LIKE YOU TO COME UP HERE AND STAND NEXT TO MS. EATMON, AND THEN AFTER THAT, WE'RE GOING TO SHAKE HANDS AND GIVE HI-FIVES [INAUDIBLE]. [LAUGHTER] [OVERLAPPING]

>> WE CALL THE NAMES?

>> YEAH.

>> OKAY.

>> OKAY. WE'RE GOING TO START CALLING OUT FIRST PLACE.

>> PAYTON MORRIS, THIRD GRADE, PARKWAY ELEMENTARY.

SAMUEL CHAN, FOURTH GRADE, DALLAS PARK ELEMENTARY.

MICHAEL WALSH, FIFTH GRADE, JUNE DAVIS ELEMENTARY. [APPLAUSE]

>> ONE QUICK NOTE ON THE SPANISH SPELLING AND THE ENGLISH SPELLING, IT'S 60 WORDS, SO IT'S A VERY LONG INTENSE 30-MINUTE TEST.

ALAN MARTINEZ, AND FOURTH GRADE, SYCAMORE ELEMENTARY.

FLAVIA GONZALEZ, FIFTH GRADE, OAKMONT ELEMENTARY.

HARGRAVE, CHRISTIE PAR, THIRD GRADE, HARGRAVE ELEMENTARY.

CATALINA MOORE, THIRD GRADE, BEST RACE ELEMENTARY.

TALIA CARRADINE, FIFTH GRADE, JUNE DAVIS ELEMENTARY.

THOSE ARE ALL OUR WINNERS.

[APPLAUSE] [BACKGROUND]

>> CONGRATULATIONS TO THESE AMAZING STUDENTS THAT ARE HERE TONIGHT AS WELL AS THOSE WHO WERE NOT ABLE TO BE HERE.

WE ARE EXTREMELY PROUD OF YOU ALL FOR PERFORMING AND REPRESENTING YOUR SCHOOLS WELL.

GREAT JOB TO YOU ALL, AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING WHAT YOU ALL WILL DO ON NEXT YEAR AS WELL.

WE ALSO WANT TO THANK MS. EATMON AND MR. MORENO FOR THE WORK THAT YOU ALL DO IN PUTTING ON SUCH A MAJOR COMPETITION IN OUR DISTRICT.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR LABOR OF LOVE.

I'LL YIELD TO MY COLLEAGUES AT THIS TIME, IF ANYONE HAS ANY COMMENTS.

>> I SAY KUDOS TO THE STUDENTS.

I SEE BIG SMILES ON PARENTS FACES, SO IF WE WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE ANY PARENTS OR FAMILY MEMBERS THAT ARE HERE.

THE OTHER THING I HAD A QUESTION ABOUT WAS THE STORYTELLING AND WANTED TO CLARIFY BECAUSE THAT'S AN INTEREST OF MINE, STORYTELLING, SO IS IT VERBAL? IS IT WRITTEN? CAN YOU JUST SHARE A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE STORYTELLING?

>> YES, STORYTELLING, THE STUDENTS HAVE TO LISTEN TO A SELECTION.

THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE SELECTION IS.

THEY HAVE TO LISTEN, THEY ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE NOTES, THEN THEY'RE CALLED IN ONE AT A TIME TO ACT OUT THE STORY.

WE WANT THEM TO BE ANIMATED.

IF IT'S THE THREE LITTLE PIGS, WE WANT THEM TO HUFF AND PUFF, AND THESE KIDS ARE UP THERE ACTING.

STORYTELLING IS ONE OF OUR MOST POPULAR COMPETITIONS.

WE HAVE PEOPLE TRYING TO PUT FIVE STUDENTS IN THAT COMPETITION.

WE ALWAYS HAVE TO SAY, NO, JUNE DAVIS, YOU ONLY HAVE THREE.

[LAUGHTER] BUT ALONG WITH STORYTELLING, WE ALSO HAVE CREATIVE WRITING, WHICH IS OUR SECOND GRADE WRITING COMPOSITION.

THEY HAVE 3-5 PICTURES, THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THE PICTURES ARE, THAT THEY'RE GOING TO BE GIVEN AND THEY HAVE TO WRITE A COMPOSITION WITHIN 30 MINUTES.

THEN WE HAVE OUR LOVELY SUPPORT STAFF, TEACHERS, MATHS SPECIALISTS, THEY ALL READ THE STORIES AND THEY HAVE TO USE A RUBRIC TO GRADE IT.

THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER READY WRITING, WHICH IS THIRD, AND FOURTH, AND FIFTH GRADE, WHERE THE STUDENTS ARE GIVEN ONE HOUR TO WRITE A STORY BASED ON A TOPIC.

THEY HAVE TWO OPTIONS.

WE HAVE OUR SOCIAL STUDIES.

WE JUST STARTED SOCIAL STUDIES LAST YEAR.

SOCIAL STUDIES IS A 45 MULTIPLE CHOICE TESTS ON THE STATE OF TEXAS HISTORY.

I'M A MISSISSIPPIAN, SO I ALWAYS GO OVER TO TEST MYSELF.

[LAUGHTER] I'M LIKE, I COULD NEVER DO THIS IN 20 MINUTES.

IT'S A VERY INTENSE COMPETITION WHERE WE ACTUALLY HAVE COACHES START IN AUGUST, RECRUITING STUDENTS TO BE ON THEIR TEAMS IN ORDER TO PREPARE FOR THE MAY EVENT.

IT'S VERY INTENSE AND THEY'RE LIKE, WELL, IT'S NOT A SPECTATOR SPORT.

YOU CAN'T GO IN LIKE THE QUIZ BOWL AND WATCH THEM COMPETE, BECAUSE WE TRY TO MAKE IT AS CONDUCIVE FOR THEM TO PRODUCE THEIR BEST HANDWRITING, PRODUCE THEIR BEST PIECE OF WORK WITHOUT PEOPLE WATCHING OR MAKING NOISE.

IT IS, I CALL IT OLD SCHOOL WITHOUT THE COMPUTERS, PAPER PENCIL TYPE OF TEST, AND THE STUDENTS LOVE IT. THEY LOVE IT.

>> I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. [OVERLAPPING]

>> YES, MA'AM.

>> THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS.

>> MR. DAVIS, I HAVE A QUESTION.

[00:15:01]

>> YES, MA'AM. FIRST OF ALL, CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO THE STUDENTS, AND YOUR ENTHUSIASM AND EXCITEMENT IS CONTAGIOUS.

A QUESTION.

YOU SAID THAT SYCAMORE HAD 85 STUDENTS.

SO I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT HOW THEY ENDED UP. WAIT JUST A MINUTE.

[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE YOU SAID THREE STUDENTS PER CATEGORY, IS THAT THE WAY IT WORKS? EXPLAIN IT TO ME.

>> MY WIFE WAS THE COORDINATOR OVER THERE.

[LAUGHTER] BUT SHE WOULD ASK ME A LOT, SHE WOULD ASK ME THE DETAILS, HOW MANY KIDS CAN WE HAVE PER VENT? SHOULD WE MAX THEM OUT AND I WOULD GO, THAT'S THE BEST PRACTICE, SO GO AHEAD AND MAX THEM OUT AND HAVE ALL YOUR STUDENTS COMPETE AND HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY.

MAYBE IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH IT. [OVERLAPPING]

>> IT'S BILINGUAL CAMPUS.

>> THEY ALSO HAD BILINGUAL, SO THEY HAVE DOUBLE THE SIZE OF STUDENTS.

DOUBLE THE OPPORTUNITY.

>> I WAS JUST TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT.

>> THIS EVENT WOULDN'T BE AS BIG.

BUT WHEN YOU SEE NUMBERS 80, 85, THAT CAMPUS COORDINATOR.

WE'RE THE DISTRICT COORDINATOR, SO WE COMMUNICATE WITH THE CAMPUS COORDINATORS.

THOSE CAMPUS COORDINATORS, THEY START IN AUGUST.

HEY, YOU KNOW IN THE SPRING WE I HAVE A COMPETITION.

YOU WANT TO BE ON MY TEAM.

THEY'RE TRYING TO RECRUIT TEACHERS THAT THEY KNOW GOING TO ADVOCATE FOR THEIR STUDENTS TO LEARN THAT LEARNING IS FUN.

IT'S SMART. BEING SMART.

THAT'S THE COOL THING.

CAN YOU DO YOUR MULTIPLICATION FACTS IN YOUR HEAD? IF YOU CAN, LET'S MAX OUT THAT TEAM.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE THREE CONTESTANTS AND ULTIMATE.

THEY'RE GOING TO HAVE FOUR TOTAL FROM ONE EVENT.

IT'S A FOURTH AND FIFTH GRADE EVENT.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE A FOURTH GRADE TEAM AND A FIFTH GRADE TEAM.

WE WANT THOSE TEACHERS WHO ARE PASSIONATE.

THAT'S HOW WE'RE ABLE TO BE SUCCESSFUL AS THE DISTRICT COORDINATORS BECAUSE IF WE DON'T HAVE THE TEACHERS AND THE STAFF WILLING TO WORK AFTER SCHOOL.

THEY HAVE CRITERIA SO MANY HOURS AFTER SCHOOL THAT THEY HAVE TO WORK.

WE DON'T HAVE THOSE STAFF MEMBERS THAT'S WILLING TO PUT IN THAT TIME.

THE STUDENTS AREN'T GOING TO BE SUCCESSFUL.

AS YOU CAN SEE, SUE [INAUDIBLE] ACTUALLY HAD TWO FIRST PLACE WINNER BECAUSE OUR CAMPUS COORDINATOR, SHE WORKED RELENTLESS WITH THE STUDENTS.

WE HAVE SOME STUDENTS THROUGHOUT THE PRESENTATION.

THEY WON FIRST PLACE LAST YEAR.

THEY BEAT OUT 60-70 STUDENTS LAST YEAR.

JETT JAMES FROM JUNE DAVIS, SHE ALWAYS WIN.

SHE'S WON THREE YEARS IN A ROW.

[LAUGHTER] I JUST RECOGNIZE THAT NAME, BUT THE PASSION THAT WE HAVE FOR THIS EVENT.

IT SPILLS OVER INTO THE CLASSROOM AND THE KIDS GET EXCITED.

IT HELPS WITH EVERYTHING.

I COULD TALK ALL NIGHT, BUT EVEN WHEN IT COMES TO LIKE DISCIPLINE, HEY, YOU KNOW YOU HAVE TO DO XYZ IF YOU WANT TO BE PART OF THE UIL TEAM.

BUT IT'S OBVIOUS. THANK YOU.

>> I GUESS SHE'S TRYING TO SAY WE JUST COMMUNICATE A LOT AND OFTEN AND CLEARLY WITH THE COACHES AND COORDINATORS AND IT WORKS.

>> YEAH. WE DID WANT TO ALSO RECOGNIZE THE STUDENT SERVICES, ESPECIALLY MS. TRACY BRANDENBURG.

SHE'S IN CONSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH JERRY AND I, WHATEVER WE NEED, ANY PAYROLL, ANY EVENT.

SHE'S ALWAYS INSTANT COMMUNICATION WITH US.

SHE'S OUR BACKBONE ALSO, MS. BRANDENBURG.

>> ALONG WITH THE BALANGO DEPARTMENT, THEY HELPED US OUT TOO.

>> YES. THANK YOU.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS?

>> I JUST HAD A QUICK COMMENT.

I'M A FORMER MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH TEACHER, AND I JUST WANT TO TELL THE STUDENTS DON'T STOP HERE.

I KNOW MANY OF YOU ARE GOING TO THIRD GRADE AND FOURTH GRADE.

UM, BUT WHEN YOU GET TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, REMEMBER, YOU CAN STILL COMPETE IN UIL.

THEY STILL HAVE PROBLEM SOLVING AND NUMBER SENSE AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS THAT YOU DO NOW IN ELEMENTARY. KEEP IT GOING.

>> CAN YOU HEAR IT?

>> THANK YOU. ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS?

>> DR. MCFARLAND.

>> I JUST WANTED TO YOU, MS. EATMON AND MR. MARINO, I TELL YOU WHAT I AM JUST ALWAYS EXCITED AND ALWAYS APPRECIATIVE OF THE EXTRA EFFORT THAT YOU ALWAYS PUT FORWARD.

YOU ALWAYS GO ABOVE AND BEYOND.

THE REASON THAT STUDENTS ARE HAVING A GOOD TIME AND TEACHERS ARE ENGAGED AND THE PARENTS ARE BEING ABLE TO BE THERE AND BE INVOLVED IS BECAUSE YOU ALL ARE DOING THE EXTRA WORK THAT'S NEEDED.

I WANT TO SAY PUBLICLY, THANK YOU ALL AND WE SEE YOU AND WE APPRECIATE YOU AND YOU'RE DOING AMAZING WORK. KEEP IT UP. [APPLAUSE]

>> THANK Y'ALL.

>> THANK YOU. CERTAINLY I WANT TO ECHO THE SENTIMENTS OF TRUSTEE WOODS AND MAYFIELD.

PARENTS, THANK YOU ALL.

YOU ALLOW YOUR STUDENTS TO PARTICIPATE AND YOUR SCHOLARS

[00:20:03]

TO DO THESE EXTRA THINGS OVER AND ABOVE EXCUSE ME, THE REGULAR SCHOOL DAY.

THANK Y'ALLL SO MUCH, NOT ONLY FOR ALLOWING THEM TO COMPETE BUT ALSO TO BE HERE TONIGHT TO RECEIVE THIS RECOGNITION.

LET'S GIVE IT UP FOR THE PARENTS AS WELL.

[APPLAUSE] AS WE ARE MOVING TO OUR NEXT AGENDA ITEM, I WANT TO TAKE JUST A POINT OF PERSONAL PRIVILEGE, IF I MAY.

SINCE WE'RE IN THIS SECTION OF THE AGENDA WHERE WE ARE RECOGNIZING INDIVIDUALS THROUGHOUT OUR DISTRICT.

COLLEAGUES, I THINK THAT IT IS APPROPRIATE FOR US TO TAKE JUST A MOMENT AND TO RECOGNIZE OUR IMMEDIATE PAST BOARD PRESIDENT, DR. LA TONYA WOODSON-MAYFIELD.

UP FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS, DR. MAYFIELD SERVED AS THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES, AND THE LABOR OF LOVE THAT YOU HAVE RENDERED TO THIS BOARD AND TO THIS DISTRICT CANNOT BE QUANTIFIED.

WE WANT YOU TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE APPRECIATED, THAT WE ARE TREMENDOUSLY GRATEFUL FOR YOU AND FOR THE SERVICE THAT YOU RENDERED, AND WE JUST WANT TO TAKE JUST A MOMENT TO LET YOU KNOW HOW GRATEFUL AND APPRECIATIVE WE ARE FOR YOU AND FOR YOUR SERVICE.

I WILL PAUSE FOR JUST A MOMENT, IF ANY OF MY COLLEAGUES WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ANY SENTIMENTS.

>> I WOULD LIKE TO START.

>> OVER THE LAST TWO YEARS. IT'S BEEN AN HONOR TO BE SERVE UNDER YOU AND TO BE CALLED UPON IF YOU WERE EVER ABSENT.

I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT YOU DID AN AMAZING JOB. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT DAVIS, AND TRUSTEE GRASSIA, APPRECIATE THE RECOGNITION FROM THE DISTRICT I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> MR. DAVIS.

>> MS. DAVIS.

>> THE ONLY COMMENT I HAVE IS THAT SHE MADE IT LOOK EASY.

[LAUGHTER] BECAUSE IT'S NOT, BUT SHE NEVER LET US SEE HER SWEAT.

SHE MADE IT LOOK VERY EASY. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU.

>> I WANT TO I WANT TO ADD ON TO THAT AS WELL.

YOU DID DEFINITELY MAKE IT LOOK EASY.

BOTH MS. DAVIS AND I KNOW HOW TALL THE WORK IS AND YOU SERVED WITH HONOR, AND YOU REPRESENTED THE BOARD VERY WELL.

YOU BALANCED IT WITH ALL RESPONSIBILITIES.

YOU'VE GRADUATED STUDENTS IN THIS DISTRICT, AND SO YOU'VE HELD IT TOGETHER PROFESSIONALLY, PERSONALLY, AND YOU REPRESENTED AS WELL.

THANK YOU SIS FOR YOUR SERVICE.

>> THANK YOU. Y'ALL GO TO MAKE ME CRY AND I WILL NOT CRY TODAY.

[LAUGHTER] I DO HAVE CHILLS UNDERNEATH THIS BLAZER, SO THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH.

I GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

IT'S BEEN A PLEASURE STILL WORKING WITH YOU ALL, SO IT'S FUN TO BE BACK ON THIS SIDE OF THE ROW.

WE'LL BE GOOD OVER HERE.

THANK YOU ALL. APPRECIATE IT.

>> THANK YOU. ONE MORE TIME.

LET'S CELEBRATE DR. LA TONYA, WHAT'S MADE FOR YOU ALL?.

THANK YOU. THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.

WE'LL MOVE NOW TO AGENDA ITEM 6.3 1882 PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT, DR. MCFARLAND.

>> MR. PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS, WE'RE DEFINITELY EXCITED TO BRING THIS NEXT ITEM FORWARD.

AS YOU ALL KNOW, WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON INNOVATION AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL LEVEL, AND SO WE ARE EXCITED TONIGHT TO BE TO BE AT THIS POINT, AND WE HAVE MS. POKE HERE TO SHARE THIS ITEM, MS. POKE.

>> MR. PRESIDENT, BOARD OF TRUSTEES AND DR. MCFARLAND, I'M EXTREMELY EXCITED TONIGHT TO SHARE WITH YOU OUR UPCOMING 1882 PARTNERSHIP.

THIS BOARD PRESENTATION ALIGNS WITH ALL THREE OF OUR GOALS, THRIVING STUDENTS, ENGAGED COMMUNITY AND EMPOWERED STAFF.

BOARD, WE'VE BEEN THROUGH THIS FOR A WHILE, SO WE WANT TO WALK YOU THROUGH WHERE WE'VE BEEN, WHERE WE ARE AND WHERE WE'RE GOING.

IN DECEMBER BOARD, YOU ALL APPROVED A POLICY THAT WOULD EVEN ALLOW US TO ENTERTAIN SUCH A PARTNERSHIP THAT WE'RE IN TODAY.

IN MARCH, WE PUT OUT A CALL FOR A PROPOSAL, AND WE HAD TWO IH, WHICH INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER EDUCATION THAT APPLIED.

MARCH THROUGH APRIL, WE ACTUALLY COLLECTED THE DATA IN THEIR APPLICATIONS AND WE HAD A COMMITTEE THAT REVIEWED THOSE DIFFERENT APPLICATIONS.

ALSO IN MARCH AND APRIL, WE SELECTED THAT FINAL PARTNER.

THEN IN APRIL AND MAY, WE BEGAN TO DO OUR NEGOTIATIONS WITH THAT CONTRACTOR WITH THE PARTNER TO SEE WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AND WHAT THE DIFFERENT THINGS WE'RE GOING TO DO, WHICH WE'RE STILL CONTINUING TO DO THAT.

TODAY, WE'RE BRINGING THIS ITEM TO YOU TO APPROVE OUR PARTNER FOR JUNE.

THEN STARTING IN JULY, IF THE PARTNER IS APPROVED, WE WILL BEGIN TO BEGIN PLANNING AND FINALIZING NEGOTIATIONS, AND THEN JUNE 25, THAT PARTNER WILL ACTUALLY BEGIN TO IMPLEMENT AUTHORIZING A PARTNER SCHOOL FOR CROWLEY ISD.

IN OUR CALL FOR A PROPOSAL, WE PUT OUT SEVERAL THINGS THAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR IN A PARTNER.

WE ASKED FOR ONE WITH INNOVATIVE INCUBATOR LAB OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS, ONE THAT COULD TRULY MAKE 2030 EXPERIENCES FOR CROWLEY ISD MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS FUN AND ENGAGING, LEVERAGED RESEARCH IN DIFFERENT AREAS, AND ALSO COLLEGE CAREER FOCUSES THAT FOCUSES ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE, FINE ARTS INTEGRATION, AND STEM ACTIVITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS.

THOSE ARE THE THINGS THAT WE TOLD OUR PARTNERS WHAT WE WERE LOOKING FOR.

WE BELIEVE THAT THE PARTNER THAT WE HAVE SELECTED HAS MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES.

>> IF YOU LOOK AT THIS GRAPH, KEEP GOING.

YOU CAN PUT THEM ALL OUT THERE ON TIME.

WE SEE THAT WHEN WE LOOKED AT THE APPLICATION FOR OUR PARTNER THAT WE'RE PRESENTING TONIGHT, WE TRULY BELIEVE THAT DEGREE PATHWAYS WITH TEACHERS AND RESIDENTS, THAT WILL BE OPPORTUNITY FOR US THROUGH OUR HR DEPARTMENT.

STUDENTS WILL HAVE OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRANSITION CAMPS.

WE WOULD HAVE INDUSTRY BASED FIELD EXPERIENCES FOR OUR STUDENTS THROUGH OUR PARTNER, COLLEGE CAREER INVOLVEMENT.

WE TRULY BELIEVE THAT ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT COMPONENTS THAT WE ASKED FOR WAS TRULY PRESENTED IN OUR PARTNER.

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO BOARD, I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE TO YOU OUR PARTNER, WHICH IS DR. MICHAEL SORRELL WITH PAUL QUINN COLLEGE.

>> GOOD EVENING.

>> GOOD EVENING.

>> IT IS WONDERFUL TO BE HERE, DR. MCFARLAND, THE BOARD.

WE ARE INCREDIBLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY.

[00:30:01]

I WILL JUST RUN THROUGH A FEW THINGS AND I WANT TO LEAVE TIME FOR YOU ALL TO ASK WHATEVER QUESTIONS YOU MAY HAVE.

AS YOU CAN SEE UP THERE, THAT GIVES YOU A BASIC OUTLINE OF WHAT IT IS THAT WE ARE PROPOSING TO DO.

I JUST WANT TO HIGHLIGHT A COUPLE OF THE DIFFERENT ITEMS. NUMBER 1, THE TEACHER STUDENT RESIDENCY OPPORTUNITY.

SO WE BELIEVE IN THIS CONCEPT OF GROW YOUR OWN.

MANY TIMES, SCHOOL DISTRICTS AND EVEN THE UNIVERSITY, IF WE ARE HONEST, WE STRUGGLE TO FIND PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND OUR CULTURES, WHO UNDERSTAND OUR STUDENTS, WHO REALLY CAN DO THE JOB THAT WE WANT THEM TO DO WITH OUR STUDENTS.

WELL, WHAT WE HAVE HAD GREAT SUCCESS WITH IS THIS IDEA THAT WHY DON'T WE GROW OUR OWN? WHY DON'T WE TAKE INDIVIDUALS WHO COME FROM OUR SCHOOLS, WHO COME FROM OUR CLASSROOMS, TEACHERS WHO UNDERSTAND THE COMMUNITY IN WHICH THEY SERVE, HAVE TREMENDOUS CULTURAL COMPETENCY AND BUILD THEM TO BE THE EDUCATORS WE'D LIKE FOR THEM TO BE.

THIS IS ONE COMPONENT OF WHAT WE WANT TO DO WITH CISD.

A COUPLE OF MY OTHER REALLY FAVORITES ARE PAUL QUINN COLLEGE, WE ARE AN URBAN WORK COLLEGE.

IT'S A MODEL THAT WE CREATED.

WE CREATED THE MODEL BECAUSE WE UNDERSTOOD THAT MANY OF OUR STUDENTS ARE COMING FROM PELL GRANT BACKGROUNDS.

SEVENTY FIVE PERCENT OF OUR STUDENTS ARE COMING FROM THAT LIFESTYLE.

THAT MEANS THEY'RE COMING FROM THE LOWEST SOCIOECONOMIC STRATA OF OUR COUNTRY.

WELL, THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY AREN'T BRIGHT.

IT DOESN'T MEAN THEY CAN'T EXCEL.

IT JUST MEANS THAT THEY NEED A DIFFERENT SET OF SUPPORT SYSTEMS PUT IN PLACE.

WE CREATED AN EDUCATIONAL MODEL WHERE ALL OF OUR STUDENTS GET JOBS AND THEY ARE PREPARED FOR JOBS.

AND WE GO OUT AND WE FIND THE JOBS FOR THE STUDENTS.

THIS MODEL HAS ALLOWED US TO HAVE TREMENDOUS SUCCESS.

WE'VE RAISED GRADUATION RATES OVER 30%.

WE'VE REDUCED STUDENT LOAN DEBT BY ABOUT $30,000.

AT COMMENCEMENT, 70% OF OUR STUDENTS HAVE JOBS WHILE THEY ARE SITTING AT COMMENCEMENT.

NOT SIX MONTHS AFTER COMMENCEMENT, BECAUSE AS ONE GRANDMOTHER TOLD ME, SHE SAID, BABY, I'M NOT HANDING YOU MY CHILD FOR YOU TO HAND THEM BACK TO ME AT THE END OF FOUR YEARS.

THEY CAN'T COME HOME TO MY HOUSE.

SO WE HAVE BEEN MOTIVATED BY THAT THE ENTIRETY OF OUR TIME.

BUT THIS PROGRAM ALSO GAVE US INSIGHT INTO THE POWER OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, AND ALSO WRAPPING THE STUDENTS EXPERIENCES AND WHAT THEY CARE ABOUT INTO THEIR CLASSROOM EXPERIENCES.

AND WE'VE HAD TREMENDOUS SUCCESS WITH THAT.

SO WE VIEW THAT AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE IMPLEMENTED HERE AS WELL.

COLLEGE STUDENT INVOLVEMENT, FRANKLY, IS THE EASIEST THING THAT WE CAN DO.

OUR STUDENTS LONG FOR OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE WITH STUDENTS COMING UP BEHIND THEM BECAUSE THEY REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS LIKE TO HAVE PEOPLE POUR INTO THEM AND THEY ARE ANXIOUS TO POUR INTO OTHERS.

THEY ARE TREMENDOUSLY EXCITED ABOUT THE PROSPECT.

WE DIDN'T TELL THEM WHERE, WE JUST TOLD THEM THAT THERE WERE GOING TO BE INCREASED OPPORTUNITIES FOR THEM TO ENGAGE WITH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS, AND THEY ARE VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT.

THE DEGREE PATHWAYS.

ALL OF THESE THINGS, WE LOOK AT THIS AS AN OPPORTUNITY TO DO VERY SPECIAL AND CREATIVE THINGS.

ONE OF THE OTHER IDEAS THAT WE ARE GOING TO IMPLEMENT, WE'RE GOING TO ADMIT ALL OF THE STUDENTS WHO COME THROUGH THESE FOUR SCHOOLS, AND WE'RE GOING TO TELL THEM, WE'RE GOING TO ASSUME YOU'RE GOING TO MAINTAIN THE GRADE POINT AVERAGE THAT'S REQUIRED, AND YOU ALL ARE GOING TO BE ADMITTED TO PAUL QUINN COLLEGE.

NOT AT GRADUATION, BUT WHY NOT TELL THEM IN SIXTH GRADE WHEN THEY START? SO LISTEN, THIS IS WHAT YOU HAVE.

BUILD FROM THERE.

FAR TOO MANY TIMES WE TREAT HIGHER EDUCATION AS SOMETHING THAT IS THIS GREAT MYSTERY AND THAT EVERYONE DOESN'T HAVE A PLACE THERE.

WE DON'T BELIEVE THAT.

WE BELIEVE EVERYONE HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO BE AN ADVANCED LEARNER.

THE QUESTION IS, DOES EVERYONE HAVE THE ADVANCED CHARACTERISTICS TO TEACH THOSE TYPES OF STUDENTS? AND THAT'S OUR CHALLENGE.

NOW, IN ALL FAIRNESS, I CAN GET FIRED UP AND GO INTO A PAUL QUINN COMMERCIAL.

I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT.

I'M SHOWING TREMENDOUS RESTRAINT.

I'M GOING TO STOP HERE AND ASK, ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS THAT I CAN ANSWER FOR YOU? AND IF THERE AREN'T ANY, I HAVE GOT A COMMERCIAL READY TO GO.

[LAUGHTER]

>> TRUSTEES, I WILL YIELD TO ANYONE WHO HAS QUESTIONS FOR DR. SORRELL.

>> I DO HAVE A QUESTION.

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.

IN THE LENS OF YOUR RESIDENCY PROGRAM AND DEGREE PATHWAYS, SO I WAS LOOKING AT YOUR WEBSITE AND LOOKING AT YOUR ADVANCED DEGREE PROGRAMS. THE REASON I'M SAYING THAT IS I SPOKE WITH THE STAFF MEMBER HERE WHO HAS RECEIVED ALL THE DEGREES FROM HBCUS.

[00:35:02]

THEY'RE LOOKING AT GETTING A DOCTORATE, BUT THEY SAID, I NEED AN HBCU.

DO YOU OFFER DOCTORATES IN EDUCATION?

>> WE DO NOT. WE'RE OUR GRADUATE PROGRAM, WE IMPLEMENTED OUR FIRST ONE DURING THE PANDEMIC, AND IT IS AN MBA PROGRAM.

IT'S AN EXECUTIVE MBA PROGRAM THAT WE PARTNERED WITH BISHOP TD JAKES AND POTTER'S HOUSE.

WE JUST HAD OUR FIRST GRADUATE THIS PAST COMMENCEMENT.

BUT I'LL TELL YOU WHAT? IF THERE IS DEMAND, WE WILL ABSOLUTELY LOOK INTO IT.

WE JUST TRY NOT TO GET AHEAD OF OUR SKIS.

SO IF YOU HAVE 10-15 PEOPLE THAT WANT DOCTORATES, I'M PRETTY SURE WE CAN FIND A WAY TO CREATE AN EDUCATIONAL DOCTORATE.

>> YOU'RE BUILDING A SATELLITE CAMPUS IN FORT WORTH, CORRECT?

>> ARE YOU JUST TRYING TO PUT ALL OUR BUSINESS OUT IN THE STREET OUT THERE? [LAUGHTER]

>> BECAUSE I'M THINKING IF YOU CAN FIND THESE 10-15 PEOPLE BECAUSE I THINK I KNOW A FEW NAMES WHO ARE WILLING, READY, AND ABLE, IT WOULD BE MUCH MORE FEASIBLE TO DRIVE TO EAST FORT WORTH THAN TO DALLAS.

SO I'M JUST PUTTING A PLUG OUT THERE.

>> I THINK YOU ARE CLEARLY A VISIONARY, TRUSTEE ROBINSON.

[LAUGHTER] I WOULD TELL YOU BECAUSE, I UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE LIABLE TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT.

ALLEGEDLY, THERE HAD BEEN CONVERSATIONS ABOUT SUCH ADVENTURE.

IF THERE WERE TO BE SUCH ADVENTURE, RUMOR HAS IT THAT I'M INCREDIBLY EXCITED ABOUT IT AND ITS POTENTIAL.

SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

>> TRUSTEES, ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FOR DR. SORRELL?

>> NO.

>> WELL, IN ALL CANDOR, IT IS AN HONOR TO BE AT THIS STAGE, TO HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH THIS COMMUNITY.

WE LONG AGO, IDENTIFIED TERRAN COUNTY AS A PLACE WHERE WE THOUGHT THERE WAS SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL AND THAT WAS BEING UNDERSERVED IN A WAY THAT WE THOUGHT WE COULD ADD VALUE AND TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO WORK WITH DR. MCFARLAND AND THIS AMAZING TEAM.

IT REALLY IS SOMETHING THAT WE ARE EXTRAORDINARILY EXCITED ABOUT.

SO JUST THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.

WE REALLY LOOK FORWARD TO WORKING WITH YOU.

AND IF THERE HAPPENS TO BE A FORT WORTH CAMPUS, I'M SURE IT WILL BE AMAZING AS WELL.

[LAUGHTER]

>> YOU HAVE STAFF MEMBERS WHO ARE READY TO PARTICIPATE?

>> YES, MA'AM.

>> DR. SORRELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR BEING HERE AND FOR YOU AND YOUR TEAM.

TRUSTEE DAVIS AND I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF SERVING ON THE INTERNAL COMMITTEES HERE IN CROWLEY ISD, AND IT HAS CERTAINLY BEEN BENEFICIAL FOR US TO HEAR FIRSTHAND, MANY OF YOU ALL'S INNOVATIVE IDEAS AND JUST TO REALLY GET TO KNOW AND UNDERSTAND WHO PAUL QUINN IS.

YOU HAVE DONE A PHENOMENAL JOB, YOU AND YOUR TEAM THERE IN JUST REBRANDING AND REVAMPING AND REALLY TAKING PAUL QUINN TO AN EVEN GREATER LEVEL THAN IT ALREADY WAS.

SO KUDOS TO YOU AND YOUR TEAM, AND IF BY CHANCE, THINGS WORK OUT TO WHERE WE'RE ABLE TO PARTNER, I'M PRETTY SURE THAT IT WILL BE AN EXCITING AND ENGAGING PARTNERSHIP.

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR PRESENCE.

>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE APPRECIATE IT.

>> YES, SIR. BOARD MEMBERS, THIS IS A POSSIBLE ACTION ITEM AND SO WE HAVE HEARD THE REPORT FROM MS. POKE, AND WE HAVE HEARD COMMENTS AND THINGS FROM DR. SORRELL, IF THERE ARE NO QUESTIONS, AND IF WE'RE READY TO TAKE ACTION ON THIS, I WILL ENTERTAIN A MOTION.

>> GIVEN WHAT WE'VE JUST HEARD AND WHAT WE HAVE LEARNED THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, I MOVE THAT THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES SELECT PAUL QUINN COLLEGE AS THE INSTITUTION OF HIGHER EDUCATION OPERATING PARTNER FOR FOUR MIDDLE SCHOOLS AND AUTHORIZE THE SUPERINTENDENT TO NEGOTIATE A CONTRACT AND PERFORMANCE AGREEMENT WITH PAUL QUINN COLLEGE FOR THE OPERATION OF THE SCHOOLS AS PRESENTED.

>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE DAVIS.

IT HAS BEEN PROPERLY MOVED. IS THERE A SECOND?

>> I SECOND.

>> THANK YOU, TRUSTEE MAYFIELD.

IT HAS BEEN PROPERLY MOVED AND SECONDED.

IS THERE ANY UNREADINESS? HEARING NONE, PLEASE MOVE TO VOTE.

AND THE MOTION PASSES UNANIMOUSLY.

CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH CROWLEY ISD AND PAUL QUINN COLLEGE.

[APPLAUSE] AWESOME.

THANK YOU, TRUSTEES FOR THAT.
