AND IN THAT SAME CLASS, A DISTRICTWIDE DROPOUT RATE WAS 6.6. BUT FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL ED, IT'S HIGHER AT 8.1. THESE PERCENTAGES ARE NOT ABSTRACTS. THESE ARE OUR KIDS. [00:15:04] EVERY PERCENTAGE IS MANY OF OUR KIDS. AND THESE GAPS ARE TELLING YOU EXACTLY WHO IS BEING PUSHED OUT. RESEARCH IS SUPER CLEAR. STUDENTS, INCLUDING OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, ARE MORE LIKELY TO STAY ENGAGED IN SCHOOL, BUILD SOCIAL CONNECTION, AND PERSIST TOWARD GRADUATION WHEN THEY'RE INCLUDED IN THESE EXTRACURRICULARS. THEY'RE NOT COMING FOR THE SCIENCE AND THE MATH. THEY'RE COMING BECAUSE THEY WANT TO BE, OH, I'M GOING TO SING TODAY. I'M GOING TO DANCE TODAY. I'M GOING TO SEE MY FRIENDS. AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES OUR KIDS COME TO SCHOOL. SO RESEARCH SHOWS THAT PARTICIPATION IN THESE EXTRACURRICULAR IS CONSISTENTLY LINKED TO BETTER ENGAGEMENT, STRONGER PEER RELATIONSHIPS, LOWER DROPOUT RISK. IN OTHER WORDS, BELONGINGS, NOT EXTRA BELONGING IS A DROPOUT PREVENTION STRATEGY. SO I WANT TO START WITH WHAT IS WORKING. CROWLEY IS DOING SOME AMAZING THINGS BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT TO SAY THIS OUT LOUD. CROWLEY ISD ALREADY KNOWS HOW TO DO THIS WELL. I'VE PERSONALLY WATCHED ADMINISTRATORS AT RICHARD ALLEY WORK IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE STEM STAFF TO MAKE SURE THAT MY CHILD COULD FULLY PARTICIPATE IN EVERYTHING AROUND STEM, IN STEM CLUBS, EVEN IN STEM FIELD TRIPS. AND SOME OF YOU HAVE COMPLETED IT. THAT'S GREAT. BUT IF YOU HAVE NOT, I WANT YOU TO START WORKING ON THAT PUZZLE. AND YOU. THERE'S SOMETHING THAT'S MISSING, THOUGH, OKAY? THE REASON WHY WE USE ALGEBRA IN EIGHTH GRADE MATH IS THAT EIGHTH GRADE MATH AND ALGEBRA IS THE ABSOLUTE BEST PREDICTOR OF A STUDENT'S SUCCESS THE FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE, IF THEY SCORE WELL IN EIGHTH GRADE MATH. THAT MEANS THEY'LL DO WELL THE FIRST THE FIRST SEMESTER OF COLLEGE. IF THEY DO WELL IN ALGEBRA, THAT MEANS THEY'LL SCORE A OR B, OR THEY'RE THEY'RE POISED TO BE ABLE TO SCORE A OR B IN THEIR FIRST YEAR OF COLLEGE AND HAVE THE ABILITY TO EVEN GO GO FURTHER WITH MATH. SO NUMERACY IS IMPORTANT, BUT WE REALLY HAVE HAVE ONE MORE. SO WE HAVE LITERACY. A STUDENT CAN BE ABLE TO READ, WRITE AND THINK WE HAVE NUMERACY. THEY CAN DO THE MATH. WE ALSO HAVE FUTURE READY. THEY ARE COLLEGE CAREER MILITARY READY. THERE'S ONE OTHER THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR CROWLEY ISD IN ORDER FOR US TO REACH OUR GOALS AND REACH OUR OBJECTIVES. ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THAT IS? GROWING 15 MONTHS IN ONE YEAR. ALRIGHT, ALRIGHT. THAT'S RIGHT. 15 MONTHS OVER ONE YEAR OR 15 MONTHS OVER 12 OVER, OVER 12 MONTHS. YOU ALL HAVE APPROVED SOME OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AFTER SCHOOL AND ON THE WEEKENDS AND ALL THESE OTHER INNOVATIVE AND CREATIVE EVENTS, AND IT'S ALL ABOUT ATTEMPTING TO INCREASE STUDENTS EXPOSURE TO READING, WRITING, MATH, SCIENCE, THEIR FUTURE. THEY ALSO HAVE AN INTENTIONAL TUTORING AND INTERVENTION PROGRAM, AS WELL AS STRONG PRACTICE BASED PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES WHERE STUDENTS ARE PLANNING. I MEAN, TEACHERS ARE PLANNING AND THEY'RE IN THE WORK PRACTICING BEFORE THEY DELIVER THAT STRONG FIRST INSTRUCTION. SO I JUST WANT TO LEAN IN BOARD AND JUST KIND OF JUST DRAW ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT YOU SEE ALL FOUR OF THE CAMPUSES ARE EXCEEDING THEIR GAP MAP GOALS. AND SO THEY THEY GAVE A BASELINE ASSESSMENT, AND THEN THEY GAVE ANOTHER ECR OR WRITING ASSESSMENT THAT CONSTRUCTED RESPONSE AT WEEK EIGHT. BETWEEN IN JUST EIGHT WEEKS OF INSTRUCTION FROM THE BASELINE TO WEEK EIGHT, THE ENTIRE DISTRICT REDUCED ZEROS IN WRITING BY 20%, BY OVER 20%. AND THAT JUST MEANS MORE STUDENTS ARE WRITING, ORGANIZING, AND COMMUNICATING THEIR THOUGHTS THROUGH WRITTEN EXPRESSION. IT'S NOT THAT THEY WEREN'T WRITING TO BEGIN WITH, BUT IT'S ABOUT RESPONDING TO TEXT AND RESPONDING TO WHAT THEY'RE WRITING, THEY'RE READING. BUT SHE'S UNAFRAID TO ALSO ADVOCATE FOR THOSE SAME TEACHERS, THE SAME STUDENTS. WE WENT TO TALK TO MISS BOYD AND MISS BOYD, I'VE NEVER SEEN MISS BOYD SMILE SO HARD BECAUSE YOU WERE MORE AHEAD THAN SHE THOUGHT YOU WERE. RIGHT? DOCTOR LANE HAS TASKED ME WITH WHAT IS CALLED THE DREAM ACADEMY. THAT IS PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PART OF MY JOB RIGHT NOW THAT IS WORKING WITH OUR AT RISK STUDENTS. SOME HAVE ATTENDANCE ISSUES, SOME HAVE BEHAVIOR ISSUES, SOME ARE BEHIND IN CREDIT. AND SO MY JOB IS TO KIND OF COACH THEM THROUGH, LIKE HOW AM I GOING TO HELP THEM BE SUCCESSFUL. AND I LOVE TO WATCH STUDENTS WHO MAY ONLY HAVE THREE CREDITS START TO FEEL SOME SUCCESS AND JUST SEE A SMILE ON THEIR FACE. MISS ANDERSON WAS ALWAYS THERE AND SOMETIMES I WAS LIKE I WAS SLACKING. SHE WAS LIKE, AUTUMN, YOU KNOW, YOU GOT THIS. YOU KNOW YOU CAN'T. YOU CAN'T GIVE UP. YOU CAN'T GIVE UP NOW. WHEN SHE STAYED ON ME ABOUT GETTING THE CLASS, MY ATTENDANCE, EVERYTHING. IT MADE ME FEEL LIKE SHE CARED ABOUT ME. AND SHE HELPED ME BE A YOUNG LADY. SHE SHOWED ME HOW TO BE INDEPENDENT, STRONG, HARD WORKING LADY. LAST YEAR, SCORES CAME BACK, AND I REMEMBER WE HAD ONE OF HERS THAT SHE'D BEEN WORKING WITH ALL YEAR LONG. LANEECE HAD THAT IMPACT ON HER AND BUILDING HER CONFIDENCE. AND SHE WENT FROM DOES NOT MEET TO MASTERS. I REMEMBER WE BOTH WERE JUST CRYING IN THE OFFICE, YOU KNOW, DANCING A JIG FOR THE STUDENT AND CELEBRATING THE IMPACT THAT SHE WAS ABLE TO HAVE FOR THOSE KIDS. SHE ALWAYS OUT THERE PUTTING A SMILE ON MY FACE OUT THERE WITH GOOD VIBES AND ALWAYS SHOWING US THAT NO MATTER WHAT SHE'S GOING THROUGH, THAT WE MATTER. SHE SAID, WELL, I JUST I GOT THE RESULTS FROM YOUR MRI AND YOUR AND EVERYTHING, YOUR BIOPSY AND IT IS CANCER. AND SHE APOLOGIZED. AND SO I JUST REMEMBER TELLING HER, DOCTOR KENT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO APOLOGIZE. I SAID, I'M READY TO FIGHT. AND WE HUNG UP THE PHONE AND MY LIFE JUST KIND OF SHATTERED RIGHT THEN AND THERE. ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WASN'T EVEN THAT. YOU'RE TELLING ME I HAVE BREAST CANCER. WHAT WAS GOING THROUGH MY MIND WAS MORE OF, HOW IS THIS GOING TO AFFECT MY FAMILY, MY FRIENDS, MY COWORKERS? ME WASN'T EVEN IN THE EQUATION AT ALL BECAUSE I KNOW HOW HARD I LOVE PEOPLE, AND I LOVE MY FAMILY, AND I LOVE MY FRIENDS AND I LOVE MY COWORKERS. SHE MEANS THE WORLD TO ME. SORRY. NOT ONLY DO I CONSIDER HER ONE OF MY BEST FRIENDS, BUT SHE'S MY ROCK. SHE'S BEEN THERE FOR ME THROUGH A LOT, AND I CRIED. [01:20:05] I CRIED LIKE A BABY. I LOOK AT MISS ANDERSON LIKE SHE'S MY MOTHER. THE DAY THAT I WAS DIAGNOSED WAS THE DAY I FELL APART. MY WORLD FELL APART. MY HUSBAND TOOK ME IN HIS ARMS AND SAID, YOU LET IT ALL OUT. BUT TOMORROW WE FIGHT. AND THEN LITTLE DID I KNOW, THE NEXT FEW DAYS HE WAS THINKING ABOUT SOME THINGS, LIKE PROCESSING SOME THINGS, AND HE CAME TO ME AND HE SAID. HE SAID, I HAVE AN IDEA. AND HE SAID, I WANT TO MAKE THIS JOURNEY ABOUT TEARS FOR JOY. YOU'RE GOING THROUGH A LOT, HE SAID. BUT THERE'S SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING THROUGH A LOT OF THINGS AS WELL. AND SO WE WANT THIS TO BE NOT A JOURNEY OF ANGER, OF SADNESS, BUT WE WANT ALL OF OUR SITUATIONS TO BE TEARS FOR JOY. THE MINUTE THAT SHE PUT OUT THE TEARS FOR JOY SHIRTS, EVEN THOUGH IT WAS SUMMERTIME, I MEAN, THE STAFF JUMPED AT THE CHANCE TO TO BE THERE TO SUPPORT HER. MY TUMOR HAS GONE FROM SEVEN CENTIMETERS TO NOW. IT'S LESS THAN TWO CENTIMETERS IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. REALLY. I HAVE TO CREDIT ALL OF THIS RIGHT NOW TO GOD. I HAVE AN AMAZING SUPPORT SYSTEM.
