SO AS [INAUDIBLE] AGENDA ITEM TONIGHT IS A PRESENTATION BY DISTRICT CONSULTANT DR.

[2.0 Study Session]

CRYSTAL TAYLOR WITH GOOD SENSE EDUCATION GLOBAL CONSULTING.

AGENDA ITEM 2.1. DR. MCFARLAND.

>> MADAM PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS, I'D FIRST LIKE TO START OFF BY JUST SAYING THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

I REALIZE OVER THE LAST PROBABLY MONTH AND A HALF, WE'VE HAD MORE BOARD MEETINGS OVER THIS LAST MONTH AND A HALF THAT WE PROBABLY HAD IN QUITE SOME TIME.

SO I KNOW IT TAKES A LOT FOR YOU TO HAVE TO CHANGE YOUR SCHEDULE AND MODIFY YOUR SCHEDULE AND SO I WANT TO FIRST JUST ACKNOWLEDGE THE FACT THAT I APPRECIATE THE EXTRA EFFORT THAT YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH IN ORDER TO DO THAT.

SO AS WE REALLY PREPARE FOR WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AS WE MOVE THROUGH THIS CRISIS, THIS PANDEMIC, WHAT I WANTED TO DO IS JUST REALLY MAKE SURE THAT WE ALL HAVE REALLY GOOD DIRECT INFORMATION SO THAT WE CAN MAKE GOOD DECISIONS.

WE KNOW THAT WE ALL HAVE SOME VERY DIFFICULT DECISIONS TO MAKE WITH MANY VARIABLES, AND SO DEFINITELY, I'M EXCITED ABOUT THE DISCUSSION TONIGHT.

WE HAVE HAD THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY OF PULLING TOGETHER A TEAM OF FOLKS WHO ARE LOOKING AT WHAT HAPPENS WHEN SCHOOL RESTARTS.

SO I WANT TO REALLY SHARE THAT WE HAVE A COMMITTEE THAT WE'VE CREATED THAT WE CALL OUR SCHOOL RESTART COMMITTEE.

WE'VE GOT TO OFFICIALLY REBRAND THAT COMMITTEE TO THE PROJECT 8-13.

8-13 IS ACTUALLY THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL FOR THE 2020 SCHOOL YEAR.

SO THIS COMMITTEE, THE COMMITTEE THAT WILL BE OPERATING AND UNDERSTANDING AND TRYING TO DETERMINE WHAT HAPPENS ON 8-13, THAT COMMITTEE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY ON LAST WEEK TO HEAR FROM A PERSON AND EDUCATOR WHO WAS ACTUALLY FROM TEXAS BUT IS NOW SPENDING TIME WORKING AND SERVING IN CHINA.

SO I THOUGHT AFTER HEARING THAT CONVERSATION ON FRIDAY WITH THAT SMALL GROUP, I WAS LIKE, "MAN, THIS IS SOMETHING THAT THE ENTIRE BOARD NEEDS TO HEAR," BECAUSE IT'S REALLY GOOD INFORMATION THAT WE NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT AS WE BEGIN TO TALK ABOUT POLICY AND PRACTICES GOING FORWARD.

SO WE'RE EXCITED ABOUT BEING ABLE TO BRING DR. TAYLOR HERE TONIGHT AND SHE'LL INTRODUCE HERSELF IN A SECOND, BUT I LIKE TO TURN IT OVER TO MS. ISABELL AND ALLOW MS. ISABELL TO INTRODUCE MS. DIGGLES AND THEN WILL MOVE ON TO OUR AGENDA.

BUT THE WHOLE GOAL TONIGHT IS FOR YOU ALL TO GET DETAILED FIRST-HAND INFORMATION FROM AN EDUCATOR WHO WAS ACTUALLY OPERATING WITHIN CHINA, WITH SOCIAL DISTANCING RESTRICTIONS, AND OPERATING IN AN EFFECTIVE RATE.

SO I'LL TURN IT OVER TO YOU, MS. ISABELL AT THIS POINT.

THANK YOU.

>> I THANK YOU, DR. MCFARLAND, PRESIDENT DAVIS, AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD.

WE ARE EXCITED BECAUSE THIS COMMITTEE HAS GOTTEN OFF TO A GREAT START.

[00:05:04]

THERE ARE BASICALLY FOUR SUB-COMMITTEES.

ONE IS HEALTH AND SAFETY, ONE IS SOCIAL DISTANCING, ELEMENTARY REOPENING, AND SECONDARY REOPENING.

THE MEMBERS OF THE SOCIAL DISTANCING COMMITTEE WAS MADE BY MS. DIGGLES.

SHE WAS ABLE TO CONNECT US DIRECTLY WITH DR.

TAYLOR AND WE'VE GOT A WEB OF INFORMATION FROM HER.

SO RIGHT NOW I'D LIKE TO TURN TO MS. DIGGLES SO SHE CAN EXPLAIN AND INTRODUCE THAT MATERIAL TO YOU ALL. MS. DIGGLES?

>> THANK YOU, MS. ISABELL, MADAME PRESIDENT, DR. MCFARLAND, ESTEEMED TRUSTEES AND FRIENDS, IT IS MY GREAT HONOR TO INTRODUCE DR.

CRYSTAL TAYLOR.

DR. TAYLOR IS AN AMERICAN CITIZEN WHO IS CURRENTLY WORKING AS A CAMPUS ADMINISTRATOR AT AN INTERNATIONAL BOARDING SCHOOL IN JIESHOU, CHINA.

RIGHT NOW, THEY ARE WELCOMING STUDENTS BACK TO CAMPUS IN JIESHOU, WHICH IS A SHORT SEVEN-HOUR DRIVE FROM WUHAN WHICH WE KNOW IS THE EPICENTER OF THE VIRUS.

WE'RE EXCITED TO HAVE HER JOIN US THIS EVENING TO SHARE HER TEAM'S PRIORITIES AND TO ENGAGE US IN A COLLABORATIVE DIALOGUE AS WE BEGIN THE PLANNING PROCESS TO REOPEN SCHOOLS SAFELY HERE IN CROWLEY ISD.

DR. TAYLOR HAS ALREADY SHARED WITH ME THAT SHE WANTS TO ANSWER ALL OUR QUESTIONS DURING THE PRESENTATION.

SO PLEASE DO NOT HESITATE TO STOP HER AND ENGAGED WITH HER AT ANY TIME.

NO FURTHER ADO, DR. TAYLOR.

>> I THINK YOU'RE MUTED, DR. TAYLOR.

[NOISE]

>> THERE YOU GO. CAN YOU HEAR ME?

>> YES.

>> OKAY. THANK YOU MRS. DIGGLES FOR THE INTRODUCTION.

IT'S AN HONOR TO BE HERE.

THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE OUR STORY OF HOW WE'RE GETTING BACK IN TRACK AND I HOPE THAT YOU ARE FINDING THIS INFORMATION HELPFUL.

I WANT TO COMMEND YOU FIRST OFF JUST FOR THINKING FORWARD, UNDERSTANDING THAT YOU DO NEED A PLAN, YOU CAN'T GO IN ONE SIDED FOR GETTING THE PROPER COMMITTEES.

I LOVE THE FACT THAT YOU RE-BRANDED YOUR NAME TO THE PROJECT, 8-13.

IT SOUNDS EXTREMELY POSITIVE.

IT SOUNDS LIKE WE CAN DO THIS.

SO I'M EXCITED ABOUT DIRECTION THAT YOU ARE HEADING AS A DISTRICT.

MY DESIRE IS TO HELP CROWLEY ISD BE A MODEL DISTRICT FOR OTHER SCHOOLS IN THE STATE.

BUT HOW TO DO THIS APPROPRIATELY? SO KUDOS AND HATS OFF TO EACH OF YOU BECAUSE I KNOW IT'S A LOT OF HOURS AND IT'S A LOT OF COLLABORATION AND WORKING HARD TO GET THIS GOING FOR THE SAFETY OF THE STUDENTS AND THE STAFF.

SO GOOD JOB. OTHER THAN THAT, WE WILL START THE PRESENTATION AND GO FROM THERE.

>> CAN YOU SEE THAT, DR. TAYLOR?

>> YES, I CAN. AS YOU CAN SEE, WE ARE SEVEN HOURS AWAY FROM WUHAN, WHICH IS THE EPICENTER OF THIS.

A KEY THING THAT I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO REMEMBER ABOUT THE PARTICULAR SCHOOL THAT I WORK AT IS THAT WE ARE A BOARDING SCHOOL, SO WE DO HAVE STUDENTS THAT COME FROM EVERYWHERE TO ATTEND OUR SCHOOL.

WE ARE CONSIDERED THE LEAD SCHOOL IN THE ENTIRE PROVINCE, WHICH IS SAYING IN AMERICAN TERMS, WE WOULD BE THE TOP SCHOOL IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA OR THE TOP SCHOOL IN THE STATE OF TEXAS WHEN WE THINK OF A PROVINCE.

SO WE DO HAVE STUDENTS FROM WUHAN.

SO IT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE ALL OF OUR SYSTEMS AND PROCESSES IN PLACE IN ORDER TO EFFECTIVELY ENSURE THAT OUR STUDENTS ARE SAFE AND THAT EDUCATION CAN TAKE PLACE.

SO NEXT SLIDE.

[NOISE]

>> SORRY, DR. TAYLOR, MY COMPUTER'S FROZEN.

>> I THINK THE NEXT SLIDE IS JUST GOING TO GO ABOUT THE ABOUT ME SECTION.

I CAN GO AHEAD AND I DON'T NEED A SLIDE FOR THAT.

[LAUGHTER] SO I'M DR. CRYSTAL TAYLOR.

I MOVED TO CHINA IN NOVEMBER OF LAST YEAR.

I AM THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT HEAD AT [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL.

[00:10:04]

WE HAVE ABOUT 2,000 STUDENTS K10-12.

OUR PROJECTED ENROLLMENT FOR THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR WILL BE ABOUT 3,000 STUDENTS.

SO I HAVE A FIVE-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WHO IS HERE WITH ME.

SHE SPEAKS MANDARIN A LOT BETTER THAN I DO.

SO WE'RE LEARNING THIS WHOLE THING TOGETHER.

I'M GOING TO BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU A TWO-FOLD PERSPECTIVE, ONE AS ADMINISTRATOR AND ONE AS A PARENTS.

I THINK IT WILL BE IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO TRY TO PLAY BOTH OF THOSE ROLES AS YOU ARE PLANNING YOUR PROCESSES WHICH YOU ARE GOING TO PUT IN PLACE FOR PROJECT 8-13.

>> ALSO, DR. TAYLOR, AS YOU WERE SHARING, ANY IDEAS ABOUT POLICIES OR PROCEDURES FROM A BOARD MEMBER PERSPECTIVE THAT WE NEED TO BE THINKING ABOUT? DEFINITELY, PLEASE SHARE THOSE AS WELL.

>> OKAY. SO JUST SO YOU CAN GET AN UNDERSTANDING WHAT WAS OUR GUIDING QUESTION, IT WAS WHAT MEASURES MUST WE TAKE TO ENSURE A SAFE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT DURING THE POST PANDEMIC? SO WITH THIS BEING OUR GUIDING QUESTION, WE CAME ACROSS SOME PRIORITIES THAT WE FELT WE NEEDED TO TAKE IN ORDER TO ENSURE THAT WE COULD PROPERLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION.

PRIORITY NUMBER 1 WAS THE EDUCATION OF THE STAFF PRIOR TO RESTART.

SO THAT PICTURE IN THE TOP-LEFT HAND CORNER, THAT WAS OUR STAFF MEETING.

YOU CAN SEE WE ARE SOCIALLY DISTANCED AND WE ALL HAVE OUR MASK.

BEFORE OUR STAFF COULD EVEN ENTER INTO THE BUILDING, THEY HAVE TO HAVE TEMPERATURE CHECKS.

THIS MEETING WAS LED BY COMMUNITY HEALTH WORKERS AND OUR MEDICAL TEAM ON THE CAMPUS.

THEY DISCUSSED JUST COVID-19, WHAT IT IS, THE KNOWLEDGE OF IT, TALKED ABOUT PROPER HAND WASHING, TEMPERATURE CHECKS, AND HOW TO PROPERLY WEAR A MASK.

YOU MAY SEE SOME PEOPLE WITH MASK AND THEIR LIPS ARE COVERED BUT THEIR NOSTRILS ARE NOT.

[LAUGHTER] SO IT'S THOSE SIMPLE THINGS THAT SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW, YOU HAVE TO COVER FROM HERE TO HERE.

THE EDUCATIONAL TOOLS THAT TOOK PLACE IN THE STAFF MEETING, THAT WAS CENTERED ON, WE NEED YOU TO TAKE CARE OF YOU FIRST IN ORDER FOR YOU TO TAKE CARE OF THE KIDS.

SO THAT WAS THE WHOLE PURPOSE OF THIS PARTICULAR MEETING.

SCHOOLS, ADMINISTRATION, MEDICAL AND CAMPUS SECURITY TEAM ACT AS ONE.

SO THOSE WERE OUR LEADERS INTO GUIDING EVERYTHING.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO INCLUDE YOUR SECURITY TEAM BECAUSE THEY'RE GOING TO BE ON THE FRONT LINES OF TEMPERATURE CHECKS WHEN PEOPLE ARE COMING IN AND OUT OF YOUR SCHOOL.

SO IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE UP TO DATE WITH THE PLANS THAT ARE BEING FORMED AS PROJECT 8, 13 MOVES FORWARD.

TALKING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE PICTURE AT THE BOTTOM LEFT-HAND CORNER.

SO EVERYONE HERE HAS A HEALTH QR CODE, AND SO WE HAVE TO REPORT OUR TEMPERATURES THREE TIMES A DAY: MORNING, AFTERNOON, EVENING.

IT IS ENTERED INTO THIS QR CODE.

IT'S BASICALLY AN ONLINE SYSTEM TO WHERE IT TRACKS YOUR TEMPERATURES.

THAT'S BASICALLY WHAT IT'S DOING.

ALL THE ADULTS, WE HAVE ONE, BUT THE KIDS HAVE ONE AS WELL.

SO I'LL TALK ABOUT THAT ON THE NEXT SLIDE.

BUT IT IS AN EASIER WAY FOR US TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE CHECK.

>> OF COURSE, TO DR. TAYLOR, ABOUT THE FACE MASKS, IT APPEARS THAT ALL OF THEM HAVE THE SAME.

SO DID THE SCHOOL DISTRICT PROVIDE THE FACE MASKS OR WERE THEY INDIVIDUALLY HAVING TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN?

>> THIS WAS THE FIRST STAFF MEETING WE HAD HAD SINCE THE PANDEMIC, SO MOST PEOPLE CAME IN WITH MASKS.

I CAN LET YOU KNOW THAT WE HAVE ORDERED A STOCK OF MASKS.

SO WE WILL HAVE MASKS ON CAMPUS FOR OUR KIDS, FOR OUR STAFF.

THAT IS SOMETHING THAT I WOULD RECOMMEND THE DISTRICT BOARD LOOKS INTO MAKING SURE THAT YOU HAVE A SUPPLY OF MASKS ON HAND.

>> GOT YOU.

>> JUST TO REALIZE, I'M FOLLOWING THE SAME INFORMATION AS YOU ARE FOLLOWING AND THEY'RE PREDICTING A SECOND WAVE AND IT'S COMING AT THE SAME TIME AS FLU.

WELL, YOU ALSO DON'T WANT TO BE AMONGST THE WAVE THAT'S ALL TRYING TO GET MASKS AT THE SAME TIME.

[00:15:03]

SO THE EARLIER YOU CAN STOCK UP FOR YOUR SCHOOLS, WHEN THAT WAVE COMES, CROWLEY ISD IS READY.

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE?

>> YEAH. [OVERLAPPING]

>> ANOTHER THING THAT PEOPLE TEND TO FORGET JUST AS I WAS TALKING TO MY FAMILY MEMBERS BACK HOME, BEFORE THE WAVE REALLY HIT IN THE STATES, I HAD ALREADY SENT MY FAMILY MASKS.

ALL MY FAMILY MEMBERS HAD MASKS.

THEY WERE LIKE, "OH, [INAUDIBLE] WE DON'T DON'T NEED THEM." "YOU'RE GOING TO NEED THEM, SO MUST I." THEY NEED THEM.

THERMOMETERS, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT DISTRICTS AND JUST INDIVIDUAL FAMILY MEMBERS YOU'LL FORGET TO HAVE AT HOME, YOU NEED A WORKING THERMOMETER.

SO AT OUR SCHOOL, BECAUSE WE ARE TAKING TEMP CHECKS THREE TIMES A DAY, EACH CLASSROOM HAS A THERMOMETER.

EACH TEACHER HAS A THERMOMETER.

SO THOSE ARE THINGS THAT THE DISTRICT MAY WANT TO CONSIDER, MASKS AND THERMOMETERS, HAVE PLENTY OF THOSE.

YOU'RE NOT HAVING A KID GO ALL THE WAY TO THE NURSE TO GET THEIR TEMPERATURE CHECKED.

THE TEACHER CAN SCAN IT RIGHT THERE IN THE ROOM.

IF THEY FIND OUT THAT THEY HAVE A TEMP, THEY CAN MINIMIZE WHERE THAT KID IS GOING.

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE? SO THOSE ARE SOME THINGS THAT YOU WANT TO CONSIDER AS YOU ARE BUDGETING.

>> GOT IT.

>> HOW MANY STAFF MEMBERS WERE AT THIS MEETING AND WHERE WAS THE MEETING HELD?

>> THE MEETING WAS HELD IN OUR AUDITORIUM.

WE HAVE ABOUT 135, 150 IF ALL OF THEM WERE THERE.

EVERYONE SIGNED IN AS WELL.

ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS ABOUT THAT?

>> I JUST HAD A QUICK ONE, I WAS GOING TO SAVE IT TO THE THE END, AND I WILL FOR THE OTHER ONES.

BUT WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE THERMOMETERS AND CHECKING THEM AT THE SCHOOLS, YOU MAY HAVE MENTIONED THIS, BUT WHO ADMINISTERS THE TEMPERATURE CHECKS? IS THAT REASSIGNED STAFF? I KNOW YOU SAID TEACHERS CAN DO THOSE IN THE CLASSROOM BUT UPON ENTRANCE TO THE SCHOOL.

ARE THOSE STAFF MEMBERS? ARE THEY EXTERNAL HEALTH WORKERS? WHO DOES THAT?

>> THAT'S CAMPUS SECURITY.

[NOISE] SO AT OUR PARTICULAR SCHOOL, CAMPUS SECURITY ADMINISTERS YOUR TEMP CHECKS.

SO BEFORE YOU GET PAST OUR GATE, THEY'RE GOING TO SCAN YOUR WRIST, CHECK YOUR TEMP, AND THEY'LL STOP WHETHER OR NOT YOU'RE [INAUDIBLE].

EVERY DISTRICT, EVERY SCHOOL WILL BE DIFFERENT OF HOW YOU ADMINISTER THAT.

YOU MAY WANT TO GET A HEALTH TEAM AND THEY'RE EXECUTING TEMPERATURE CHECKS.

WE CHOSE TO USE OUR CAMPUS SECURITY BECAUSE THEY'RE AT THE FRONT LINE GUARDING ANYWAY AT THE GATES.

SO IT JUST MAKES SENSE FOR THEM TO ADMINISTER THEM.

IT'S BEEN GOING SMOOTHLY WITHOUT ANY ISSUES WITH THEM.

WHEN THE KIDS CAME BACK, SINCE WE ARE BOARDING SCHOOL, WHEN THEY START TO MOVE BACK ON CAMPUS, WE HAD AN ADDITIONAL STAFF TO HELP THEM.

SO WE HAD OUR MEDICAL TEAM OUT THERE AS WELL AS OUR CAMPUS SECURITY BECAUSE NOW YOU HAD TO TAKE THE TEMPERATURES OF BOTH THE PARENTS AND THE STUDENTS BECAUSE THE PARENTS WERE HELPING THE STUDENTS TO MOVE BACK TO THEIR DORMS. SO YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO BE EXTREMELY FLEXIBLE THROUGHOUT YOUR PROCESS.

I THINK THAT'S THE KEY WORD IS DON'T GET SO STUCK INTO PROCEDURES TO WHERE YOU DON'T LEAVE WIGGLE ROOM FOR THE UNEXPECTED.

SO BE FLEXIBLE WITH THE PROCESSES THAT YOU ARE CREATING.

>> BACK TO THE MASKS, [INAUDIBLE] TO ANY NUMBER OF STUDENTS EVERYDAY, RIGHT?

>> I'M SORRY, THAT QUESTION [INAUDIBLE] OUT.

DO YOU MIND REPEATING THAT?

>> OKAY, CAN YOU HEAR ME NOW?

>> YEAH, I CAN. YES, MA'AM.

>> OKAY. SO WITH THE MASKS, WE NEED TO BE PREPARED TO ISSUE A NEW MASK TO OUR STUDENTS. COULD YOU HEAR ME?

>> IT KEEPS CUTTING OUT, BUT I THINK I'M GETTING WHAT YOU'RE ASKING.

[OVERLAPPING] YOU NEED TO BE PREPARED TO GIVE A NEW MASK TO STUDENTS EVERY DAY.

>> YES. ANY NUMBER, WE WON'T KNOW BUT WE NEED TO BE PREPARED EVERY DAY.

>> YES. THERE ARE MASKS THAT YOU CAN WEAR FOR MULTIPLE DAYS, THEY ARE A LITTLE MORE COSTLY.

WE ARE DOING DISPOSABLE MASKS AND THEY'RE CHEAPER, AND WE USE A NEW MASK EVERY DAY.

>> DR. TAYLOR.

>> OKAY.

>> CAN YOU HEAR ME?

>> YES.

>> THE QUESTION THAT I HAD IS THAT YOU SAID THAT YOU SCAN THE WRIST.

[00:20:12]

I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT WOULD BE, BUT EVERY STUDENT COMES IN WITH SOMETHING ON THEIR WRIST THAT SCANS THEIR WRIST AND THEN DOES THE TEMPERATURES, IS THAT CORRECT?

>> YEAH. WELL, NOTHING'S ON THEIR WRIST.

THE TYPE OF THERMOMETER THAT WE'RE USING, YOU CAN SCAN THE FOREHEAD OR YOU CAN SCAN THE WRIST.

>> OKAY. SO THEN HOW DOES THAT INFORMATION GET TO THAT FROM THAT STUDENT? IS IT A STUDENT BADGE OR HOW DOES THAT WORK?

>> EACH STUDENT HAS THEIR QR CODE.

ETHEL, DO YOU MIND GOING TO THE NEXT SLIDE? THANK YOU.

SO THIS IS MY DAUGHTER'S QR CODE.

I HAVE TO GO IN AND PHYSICALLY PUT THAT IN THERE.

WHEN THE GUARDS TAKE THEIR TEMPERATURE, IT IS ALSO NOTED ON PAPER.

BUT IN THE MORNINGS, THE PARENT CAN PUT THAT TEMPERATURES THROUGH THIS QR CODE.

WHEN YOU WALK INTO THE SCHOOL, THAT'S BASICALLY VERIFYING THAT YES, YOUR GOOD TO GO INTO THE SCHOOL.

AFTER NOON, TEACHERS [NOISE] WILL INPUT THE TEMPERATURE.

THE EVENING, THE KIDS CAN INPUT THE TEMPERATURE IF THEY ARE OF AGE TO INPUT TEMPERATURE.

BUT IT MUST BE INPUT THREE TIMES.

>> DR TAYLOR, IS THERE AN APP OR SOMETHING THAT'S USED TO INPUT TEMPERATURE, OR HOW DO THEY FACILITATE THAT PROCESS, AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT THAT YOU'RE INPUTTING TEMPERATURE?

>> THIS PARTICULAR APP, I AM ALMOST 95 PERCENT SURE THAT THIS IS PRETTY STANDARD ACROSS CHINA.

SO AS I EXPLAINED IN THE LAST MEETING, CHINA'S A BIG COUNTRY, SO WHAT THEY MAY BE DOING IN BEIJING MAY NOT HAPPENING IN MY TOWN IN JIESHOU, OR WHAT THEY MAYBE DOING JIESHOU MAY NOT BE HAPPENING IN SHANGHAI.

ALTHOUGH WE HAVE UNIFORM PRACTICES AND PRINCIPLES THAT THEY WANT US TO STICK TO, HOW WE IMPLEMENT THOSE THINGS WILL BE CUSTOMIZED TO OUR PARTICULAR SCHOOL OR PROVINCE.

THIS ONE OF THOSE APPS THAT'S PRETTY MUCH STREAMLINED ACROSS CHINA.

WHETHER YOU'RE IN BEIJING OR WHETHER YOU'RE IN JIESHOU, YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE AN APP THAT LOOKS LIKE THIS.

YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE A QR CONTROL.

I CAN DO MORE RESEARCH FOR YOU ALL, TO SEE IF THEY HAVE SOMETHING LIKE THAT BACK IN THE STATES, BUT THAT WAS HANDED DOWN FROM THE TOP.

IT'S IMPORTANT TO MONITOR TEMPERATURE EVEN THOUGH I KNOW THAT, YOU HAVE A LOT OF ASYMPTOMATIC PEOPLE WALKING AROUND, BUT THE FACT OF, IF YOU'RE MONITORING YOUR TEMPERATURES, AND IF YOU SO HAPPENED TO HAVE A TEMPERATURE, IT HELPS WITH CONTACT TRACING.

THEY CAN PULL THIS UP AND SEE, DID YOU GO ANYWHERE TO WHERE WE NEED TO ALERT OTHER PEOPLE? THAT YOU HAD A TEMPERATURE SO NOW WE NEED TO GET IN TOUCH WITH THIS PERSON OR THIS PERSON, OR THIS BUSINESS.

SO IT JUST HELPS MINIMIZE THE SITUATION AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE.

>> WELL, TWO QUESTIONS, REALLY.

THE FIRST ONE IS, HOW FAR AHEAD OF THE PROCESS ARE YOU ALL COMPARING TO WHERE WE ARE? THEN, THE SECOND ONE IS, HAVE YOU ALL HAD ANY SITUATIONS WHERE TEMPERATURE HAD BEEN SPIKED AND YOU'VE HAD TO GO THROUGH CONTACT TRACING?

>> WE'RE PRETTY MUCH BACK IN SCHOOL.

WE HAVE THREE MORE CLASSES THAT WILL BEGIN NEXT WEDNESDAY.

BUT FOR THE MOST PART, OUR SYSTEM IS WORKING.

WE HAVE NOT HAD A SPIKE IN TEMPERATURE FOR ANY OF OUR STUDENTS OR STAFF.

I CAN LET YOU KNOW, I WAS TELLING MRS. DIGGLES EARLIER, SINCE IT IS THE HOLIDAY, I WAS PLANNING ON GOING TO FUYANG WHICH IS ABOUT A 20 MINUTES HIGH-SPEED RAIL RIDE AWAY FROM MY TOWN.

IT WOULD BE ABOUT AN HOUR-AND-A-HALF DRIVE BY CAR.

IT'S A BIGGER CITY. JUST TO GET OUT BEFORE WE ACTUALLY GO BACK INTO SCHOOL.

BUT WE HAD AN EMERGENCY LEADERSHIP MEETING YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

WE FOUND OUT THAT ONE PERSON IN TAIHE, WHICH IS THE COUNTY NEXT TO US OR THE CITY NEXT TO US, HAD BEEN REPORTED AS ASYMPTOMATIC.

WHEN THAT WAS REPORTED,

[00:25:01]

SINCE THAT TOWN IS SO CLOSE TO US, IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT OUR STAFF AND FACULTY THAT WE STAY PUT FOR THE HOLIDAY.

SO THAT'S HOW THINGS CAN CHANGE, JUST THAT FAST.

YOU HAVE TO KEEP IN TOUCH WITH WHAT'S GOING ON, NOT JUST IN [INAUDIBLE] , BUT ALSO AROUND [INAUDIBLE].

BECAUSE IT'S COMMUNICABLE.

SO YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO TAKE THOSE MEASURES AND TAKE THEM PRETTY SWIFTLY.

SOMETIMES, I LOVE [INAUDIBLE] COMMUNICATION, THAT'S ME, BUT I'M LEARNING TO ADJUST WITH THIS VIRUS.

SOMETIMES THINGS CAN'T BE TUMBLED BECAUSE WE FOUND OUT THIS YESTERDAY AFTERNOON.

A LOT OF US HAD ALREADY MADE PLANS.

BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, WE HAD TO CANCEL THOSE PLAN, AND IT'S NO ONE'S FAULT, IT'S NOT LEADERSHIP'S FAULT.

IT'S JUST THIS IS THE SITUATION THAT WE'RE IN RIGHT NOW.

>> SO WHEN YOU ALL INITIALLY STARTED BACK, TALK TO ME ABOUT THE PHASE APPROACH OR THE APPROACHES THAT YOU ALL HAD WITH STARTING SCHOOL BACK WITH GRADE LEVELS AND ALL THAT.

>> YES. I'M GOING TO GET TO THAT, AND I THINK THAT'S ON THE NEXT SLIDE.

>> OKAY.

>> JUST TO LET YOU KNOW, WE BELIEVED IN EDUCATING THE STAFF FIRST.

AFTER THE STAFF, WE WENT TO PARENTS AND STUDENTS.

SO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WERE SENT A LINK TO WATCH THAT.

BASICALLY, WHAT THE STAFF GOT IN THE STAFF MEETING WAS WHAT THEY RECEIVED VIA THIS LINK.

SO THEY LEARNED EVERYTHING.

[INAUDIBLE] HIS NAME IS [INAUDIBLE] , ACTUALLY HIS NAME IS [INAUDIBLE] AND, HE'S LEARNED HOW TO PROPERLY WASH HIS HANDS.

[INAUDIBLE] IS THREE-AND-A-HALF YEARS OLD.

AS I SAID, THAT'S GAIA'S QR CODE,MY LITTLE GIRL'S NAME IS GAIA, THAT'S HER HEALTH CODE, THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENTERING, PARENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR BRINGING THEIR KIDS TEMPERATURE THREE TIMES A DAY.

ANTHONY, IF YOU CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE, I WANT TO ANSWER DR. MCFARLAND'S QUESTION OF HOW WE GOT INTO RETURNING TO SCHOOL.

FIRST OFF, WE MADE SURE THAT WE HIRED A PROFESSIONAL CLEANING COMPANY TO COME AND JUST DEEP CLEAN OUR CAMPUS BEFORE ANYONE RETURNED.

WHEN WE DECIDED TO RETURN, WE WANTED TO RETURN BY GRADE LEVELS.

STARTING WITH THE SENIORS FIRST.

I KNOW AROUND CHINA, YOU WILL SEE THAT SCHOOLS ARE STARTING IN DIFFERENT ORDERS.

THEY'LL EITHER REVERSE THIS OR THEY'LL GO IN THE ORDER WE'RE GOING.

OUR LOGIC FOR GOING SENIORS AND JUNIORS FIRST WAS BECAUSE THEY STILL HAVE TO TAKE THIS TEST AT THE END OF THE YEAR.

EVERYTHING IS STILL TESTING.

REGARDLESS OF WHAT COUNTRY YOU'RE IN, IT'S STILL A LOT ABOUT TESTING.

SO WE FEEL THAT THE SENIORS AND JUNIORS, THEY HAD THE MOST AT STAKE.

THAT'S WHY WE WANTED THEM IN FIRST.

THEN WE WENT DOWN FROM THERE.

EVERYONE IS THERE EXCEPT FOR 3, 2, AND 1, AND KINDER, AND AS I SAID, THEY WILL BE STARTING NEXT WEDNESDAY AFTER THE HOLIDAY BREAK.

>> SO THE PEOPLE IN THE PICTURE WHO ARE SCANNING THE STUDENTS HEAD, THOSE ARE SECURITY GUARDS, AND THE BLUE COVERING, IS THAT SOMETHING THAT THE SCHOOL PROVIDES FOR THE SECURITY TEAM?

>> THOSE ARE ACTUALLY HEALTH WORKERS.

THAT WAS THE DAY WHEN THEY WERE MOVING BACK IN ON CAMPUS.

WHEN THEY MOVE IN ON CAMPUS, WE HAD ADDITIONAL WORKERS BECAUSE WE KNEW THAT THE VOLUME OF PEOPLE COMING IN WOULD BE MORE.

IT JUST WOULDN'T BE THE KIDS, IT WOULD BE THEIR PARENTS AS WELL, OR FAMILIES, SCHOOL FAMILIES COMING IN TO HELP THEIR BROTHER OR SISTER, SON OR DAUGHTER MOVING IN.

THOSE WERE ACTUALLY MEDICAL PROFESSIONALS.

OUR SECURITY GUARDS, STILL HAVE ON THE SAME SECURITY, BUT YOU WOULD SEE SECURITY OFFICERS WEAR THAT ON CAMPUS [INAUDIBLE].

THEY DO HAVE THEIR CLOTHES.

>> BEFORE COVID-19, DID YOU HAVE A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WORKING ON YOUR CAMPUS OR DID YOU ALL CREATE THIS PARTNERSHIP AS A RESULT OF THE VIRUS?

>> RIGHT QUESTION. IT WAS A PARTNERSHIP CREATED AS A RESULT OF THE VIRUS.

>> OKAY. I'M ASSUMING THEN THE MEDICAL ORGANIZATIONS SENT PEOPLE TO YOU, THEN THE QUESTION IS THAT WAS THREE WEEKS AGO.

SO ARE THEY STILL THERE OR HOW DO YOU SUSTAIN THAT?

>> YES. THEY ONLY COME WHEN WE HAVE BATCHES MOVING IN AND HELP US OUT.

WE SUSTAIN IT BY MAKING SURE THAT IF WE HAVE A SPIKE IN TEMPERATURE, WE HAVE TO REPORT THAT TO THEM.

ONGOING COMMUNICATION IS CONSTANTLY GOING ON WITH THE PARTNERSHIP CREATED WITH THE HEALTH TEAM.

[00:30:01]

THAT'S A GREAT PARTNERSHIPS TO ENSURE THAT [INAUDIBLE] HAS AS WELL.

>> YOU SAID THAT YOU WILL HAVE, 2,000 OR 3,000 STUDENTS.

HOW MANY MEDICAL STAFF DO YOU HAVE ON THE CAMPUS? BECAUSE WE HAVE HIGH SCHOOLS THAT HAVE THAT MANY STUDENTS.

HOW MANY MEDICAL STAFF PEOPLE, LIKE A SCHOOL NURSE, HOW MANY PEOPLE WORK AT YOUR CAMPUS?

>> TWO.

>> TWO.

>> TWO.

IT'S BASICALLY A TEAM EFFORT.

THE NURSE CAN'T TAKE EVERYONE'S TEMPERATURE AND OTHER ELEMENTS THAT MAY HAPPEN, SUCH AS A SPRAINED ANKLE, IF WE WERE TO HAPPEN TO HAVE AN OUTBREAK.

THAT'S WHY IT WAS VERY IMPORTANT FOR OUR TEACHERS ALSO TO BE ABLE TO ASSIST, UNDERSTANDING THAT.

MOST SCHOOLS ONLY HAVE ONE OR TWO NURSES ON STAFF.

SO HOW CAN YOU ASSIST THE NURSE IN THINGS THAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP EASE THE CONGESTION IN THE NURSE'S OFFICE.

>> SO STAYING WITH THAT POINT, OBVIOUSLY, EVERY TEACHER HAD A THERMOMETER AND THEY WERE CHECKING TEMPERATURE AS STUDENTS ENTERED THE CLASSROOM.

I BELIEVE YOU SAID IT, BUT I'M ASSUMING THAT YOU ALL WENT THROUGH SOME TRAINING SO THAT TEACHERS COULD BE ABLE TO DO THAT?

>> YEAH. IT'S JUST UNDERSTANDING HOW TO USE A THERMOMETER, HOW TO TURN IT ON,.

WHEN IT COMES TO THAT, IT'S REALLY NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, BUT YOU DO WANT TO ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SOME TYPE OF TRAINING TO ENSURE THAT PEOPLE UNDERSTAND THE PROPER METHOD AND WHERE TO ACTUALLY HOLD THE THERMOMETER AND ALL OF THAT.

WE HAVE DECIDED THE WRIST IS THE EASIEST FOR US WITH THESE THERMOMETERS THAT WE HAVE.

>> GOING BACK TO JUST TALK AT BEGINNING, BACK TO THE TRANSITION OF STUDENTS AND ALSO TEACHERS, SO I'M ASSUMING THAT EVERYONE CONTINUES TO WEAR A MASK EVERY DAY.

IS THAT THE CASE?

>> YES. WHEN ON CAMPUS, EVERYONE WILL HAVE ON A MASK.

WE TEACH IN OUR MASK.

>> SO YOU TEACH IN THE MASK?

>> YES.

I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTAND, AND THIS IS WHERE YOUR HEALTH TEAM COMES WITH THE KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE VIRUS AND HOW IT SPREADS.

JUST TALKING CAN SPREAD THE VIRUS.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO SNEEZE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO COUGH REAL HARD, JUST TALKING.

WE NATURALLY RELEASE PARTICLES WHEN WE JUST SIMPLY TALK.

ALL OF OUR TEACHERS WHEN WE'RE IN THE FRONT OF THE ROOM, WE'RE ACTIVELY MONITORING.

EVERYONE'S IN A MASK STUDENTS AND TEACHERS, PRINCIPLES FROM THE TOP DOWN.

>> YES.

>> OKAY. WE'RE READY FOR THE NEXT SLIDE.

BASICALLY I'VE ANSWERED THE QUESTION ABOUT WEAR MASK IN THE CLASSROOM AND TEACHERS TAKING THE TEMPERATURES.

OUR PRIORITY NUMBER THREE WAS TO THE SAFE TRANSITION OF STUDENTS ON CAMPUS.

SO ALL THIS EDUCATION TOOK PLACE PRIOR, WE REALLY WANTED TO CONNECT WITH THE PARENTS ON WHAT WAS GOING TO BE EXPECTED.

IT WASN'T GOING TO BE [INAUDIBLE] SCHOOL WHO HAS TO BE [INAUDIBLE].

WERE GOING TO HAVE TO STEP UP THE EXPECTATIONS OF HOW WE WERE GOING TO KEEP A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR KIDS.

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE LEARNT THROUGHOUT THIS PROCESS, JUST TALKING TO MRS. [INAUDIBLE] , SCHOOLS ARE SCHOOLS.

WHETHER THEY'RE IN CHINA OR WHETHER THEY'RE IN, DALLAS, TEXAS.

WE'RE ALL TRYING TO ANSWER THE SAME QUESTIONS TOGETHER.

WE'RE ALL TRYING TO CREATE THE SAME PROCESSES TOGETHER.

YOU GUYS HAVE AN ADVANTAGE, BUT WE'RE KIND OF BEGINNING PEAKS.

WE'RE GOING THROUGH IT, WE'RE PUTTING IT TOGETHER.

THANKFULLY, IT'S PLANS IS EFFECTIVE, IT'S WORKING.

WE DO HAVE A STRONG LEADERSHIP TEAM AND IT'S DOING WHAT IT'S SUPPOSED TO DO.

THIS EXPECTATIONS WERE PROPERLY COMMUNICATED, YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF, PUT THIS MASK ON OR PULL YOUR MASK UP.

YOU DON'T HAVE A LOT OF THAT, BECAUSE THE EXPECTATION WERE COMMUNICATED PRIOR TO EVEN RETURNING TO SCHOOL.

SO THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO BE AWARE OF, TO START COMMUNICATING YOUR SCHOOL EXPECTATIONS AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE, SO IT'S NOT THROWING ANYTHING OFF.

[00:35:02]

I KNOW THAT BACK IN THE STATES, YOU MAY HAVE SOME DIFFERENT HURDLES THAT WE DID NOT HAVE HERE.

SO WHEN IT COMES TO TEMP CHECKS, SOME PARENTS MAY SAY, "YOU'RE BREAKING HIPPA".

YOU MAY HAVE HIPPA TO DEAL WITH.

THAT'S ANOTHER FACET THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT HERE, BUT YOU CAN ALSO THINK ABOUT CREATING SOME TYPE OF CONSENT FORM.

IF YOU KNOW YOUR EXPECTATIONS, THE FACT THAT YOU MAY NEED A CONSENT FORM AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS FROM YOUR PARENTS IN THEIR CHILD'S FILE TO ACKNOWLEDGE THAT YOU WILL BE TAKING THEIR TEMPERATURE WHEN REQUESTED, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT YOU NEED TO PROBABLY START THINKING ABOUT.

I'M ACTUALLY PUTTING TOGETHER A POST PANDEMIC RESPONSE KIT.

SO I WANT TO HAVE TEMPLATES AND EVERYTHING THAT I FEEL YOU MAY NEED IN THE STATES AND PROBABLY DON'T NEED HERE.

THOSE FORMS THAT WILL ASSIST YOU IN MAKING SURE THAT YOU ARE IN COMPLIANCE AND YOU'RE NOT BREAKING ANY LAWS WHEN IT COMES TO HIPPA AND TEMP CHECKS AND ALL OF THAT.

>> SO I DO HAVE A QUESTION.

I HAVE A QUESTION FOR MS. ATTORNEY ALEXANDER, I BELIEVE SHE'S ON THE LINE.

SO ATTORNEY ALEXANDER, IT RELATES TO POLICY.

IS THERE A POSSIBILITY FOR US TO PUT SOMETHING IN POLICY RELATIVE TO REQUIRING TEMP CHECKS OR REQUIRING FACE MASKS OR ANY OF THOSE KIND OF PPES OR PROTECTION ACTIONS THAT WE KNOW WILL WORK AGAINST THE COVID-19.

DO YOU KNOW IF THERE'S ANY POLICY, RECOMMENDATIONS OR ANYTHING LEGALLY THAT WE COULD DO THAT WOULD NOT VIOLATE HIPPA, BUT WOULD ALSO GIVE US THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE SAFE AS IT RELATES TO OUR KIDS TRANSITIONING BACK?

>> IS SHE MUTED?

>> SHE MAY BE MUTED SO DR. TAYLOR, YOU CAN GO AHEAD.

ATTORNEY ALEXANDER, WE CAN DISCUSS THAT LATER, BUT YOU CAN GO AHEAD DR. TAYLOR IN THE INTEREST OF TIME, BUT I'LL CHECK WITH ALEXANDER ABOUT THAT LATER.

>> OKAY. I BELIEVE, WE CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.

AS WE ARE REEVALUATING OR WE ARE CONSTANTLY EVALUATING OUR PROCESS AND WHAT WE DID.

WELL, WE CAN PROBABLY DO BETTER.

TWO WEAKNESSES THAT I BROUGHT UP, WE'LL START WITH COMMUNICATION.

I'VE ALREADY MENTIONED THIS.

A LOT OF THINGS YOU CAN TIMELY COMMUNICATE.

SOME THINGS, YOU WILL NOT.

BUT THE THINGS THAT YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN A TIMELY MANNER SHOULD BE LIKE, THIS MUCH.

EVERYTHING ELSE, SHOULD MOST LIKELY BE COMMUNICATED IN A TIMELY MANNER TO GIVE PEOPLE TIME TO ADJUST BECAUSE THIS IS AN ADJUSTMENT, IT'S NOT JUST ABOUT RELAYING INFORMATION.

IT'S ABOUT GIVING PEOPLE TIME TO ADJUST TO THE INFORMATION THAT YOU ARE ABOUT TO RELATE.

BECAUSE IF THIS IS NEW, ALL OF THIS IS NEW TO ALL OF US, SO AN ADJUSTMENT PERIOD WILL TAKE PLACE.

THE SECOND WEAKNESS IS THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE ANY MODELS TO COLLABORATE WITH.

WE DIDN'T HAVE ANYONE TO SAY, "OKAY.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?" OR "OH, THEY OPENED UP WELL." SO OUR WEAKNESS WILL BE YOUR STRENGTH.

YOU HAVE A PARTNER TO COLLABORATE WITH TO SEE THAT, "YES, IT CAN BE DONE." IN THE TOP PICTURE, IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER, THAT'S MY DAUGHTER, THE LITTLE ONE AND MY CO-WORKER'S DAUGHTER, SHE'S IN THE SECOND GRADE.

THAT IS THEM ON OUR CAMPUS AND THEN WE HAVE TWO OF OUR FOURTH GRADERS WHO JUST MOVED BACK ON SUNDAY TO LET YOU KNOW, THEY'RE HAPPY TO BE BACK ON CAMPUS.

THEY'RE HAPPY TO BE BACK AND THEY ARE READY TO GET SCHOOL BACK TO NORMAL AS POSSIBLE.

SO WE WANT TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT THAT'S STILL WELCOMES THEM.

WE'RE GOING TO GET THROUGH THIS, THEY'RE EXCITED AND THAT'S THE CULTURE THAT WE WANT TO CREATE.

[NOISE] NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.

THE STRENGTHS OF DAY SCHOOL, WE STARTED THE PROCESS.

EVERYONE WAS WILLING TO DO WHAT WAS NEEDED TO ENSURE THE TRANSITION WAS SEAMLESS AND STUDENTS WERE PREPARED.

THIS IS WHAT I MEAN BY TEACHERS TAKING THAT EXTRA RESPONSIBILITY OF TAKING TEMPERATURES.

EVERYONE JUST SAID, "WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO?" IN ONE OF MY TEACHERS CLASSROOMS, I WALKED IN AND THAT'S ON HER BOARD.

ACTUALLY, I WALKED IN SEVERAL CLASSROOMS AND ON FACT THAT'S ON THEIR BOARD, SO JUST TO MAKE STUDENTS AWARE.

INSTEAD OF, I DON'T KNOW, LITTLE CUTESY DR. SEUSS BOARD.

YOU MAY WANT TO HAVE THESE LITTLE CUTE BOARDS TO REMIND STUDENTS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF WASHING THEIR HANDS AND UNDER

[00:40:02]

THE ATTENTION SIDE IN CHINESE IS JUST TALKING ABOUT WHEN WE WEAR MASKS AND WHAT DO WE DO WHEN WE GO TO RECESS AND HOW MASKS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORN STILL AT RECESS.

SO THAT'S WHAT THAT'S TALKING ABOUT.

BUT IT'S VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP VISUALS UP THERE FOR STUDENTS BECAUSE KIDS CAN GET COMFORTABLE REAL FAST AND THEY CAN FORGET EVERYTHING THAT'S GOING ON.

SO IT'S IMPORTANT FOR US AS THE EDUCATORS TO KEEP IT IN THEIR MIND THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER HYGIENE AND SOCIAL DISTANCING.

I DO BELIEVE THAT OUR PLAN WAS WELL THOUGHT OUT.

WE STARTED SCHOOL BACK ON TOP.

UNLIKE PROVINCE HAD A MANDATED DATE FOR ALL SCHOOLS TO HAVE AN ONLINE SYSTEM BY MARCH THE SECOND.

[INAUDIBLE] WE STARTED SCHOOL ON FEBRUARY 17TH, IT TOOK HOURS AND HOURS OF READING THROUGH ONLINE PLATFORMS SYSTEMS THAT WE FELT WOULD WORK FOR OUR PARTICULAR CAMPUS.

SO WHEN EVERYONE ELSE LOST THREE WEEKS TO SCHOOL, WE WERE BACK.

SURE ENOUGH, IT WAS ONLINE, BUT WE WERE BACK.

WHILE I'M ON ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEMS, YOU ALSO MAY WANT TO PLAN AHEAD.

THIS IS THE TIME TO EVALUATE THE ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM THAT YOU'RE USING NOW.

THIS IS THE TIME TO EVALUATE, IS IT WORKING? IS IT NOT WORKING? HOW MANY STUDENTS DID WE LOSE WITH THIS PARTICULAR ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM? DID WE LOSE ANY STUDENTS? DO WE NEED TO SEEK OUT OTHER PLATFORMS THAT ARE MORE ENGAGING TO WHERE TEACHERS ACTUALLY CAN GO ONLINE AND COMMUNICATE WITH THE STUDENTS AND TEACH.

WE CHOSE A PLATFORM TO WHERE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS LOGGED IN AND TAUGHT CLASSES, 40 MINUTE CLASSES EVERY SINGLE DAY.

OUR CLASSROOM SIZE HAD ABOUT 200 STUDENTS IN IT.

SOME, 70-80.

THAT'S PROBABLY THE SMALLEST.

BUT LESSON PLANS STILL HAD TO BE DONE AND SUBMITTED.

POWERPOINTS WERE STILL PRESENTED TO THE KIDS.

KIDS WERE STILL ASKED TO SUBMIT THEIR HOMEWORK BASED ON THE CLASS THAT WAS TAKING PLACE BASED ON THE SUBJECT MATTER THAT WAS GIVEN THAT DAY.

SO SCHOOL WAS STILL HAPPENING, VERY MUCH SO.

GRADES WERE STILL BEING SUBMITTED.

SO EVALUATING YOUR ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM AND SAY, IF IT WORK, GREAT.

IF IT DIDN'T WORK, DO WE NEED A MORE ROBUST ONE? MY GREAT GRANDMOTHER USED TO SAY, "STAY READY, SO YOU NEVER HAVE TO GET READY.

SO IT'S BETTER FOR US TO HAVE AN ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM THAT WE ARE COMFORTABLE WITH TO WHERE WE COULD SAY, "IF FOR SOME REASON THIS COMES BACK, ROLLS BACK AROUND IN THE FALL AND IT ALIGNS WITH THE FLU." I KNOW BACK IN THE STATES WHEN I WAS AN ADMINISTRATOR AT A PRIVATE SCHOOL, WE SHUT DOWN THE SCHOOL FOR THREE DAYS FOR THE FLU.

WELL, WE KNOW THAT COVID SHUTS DOWN SCHOOLS A LOT LONGER THAN THREE DAYS.

SO I NEED TO BE ABLE TO AUTOMATICALLY ROLL INTO OUR ONLINE LEARNING SYSTEM.

>> YEAH.

>> STARTING BACK, DO YOU WANT TO START BACK WITH THE HYBRID MODEL TO WHERE STUDENTS GO BACK FOR HALF DAY, THEY DO THE OTHER HALF VIRTUALLY? HOW DOES THAT LOOK FOR CROWLEY ISD? SO THOSE ARE THE QUESTIONS THAN YOU WANT TO START CONSIDERING AS YOU ARE TRANSITIONING YOUR STUDENTS.

HAVE THAT IN THAT PLAN, HAVE THAT RESPONSE, THAT COVID-19 RESPONSE IN YOUR PLAN, SPECIFICALLY FOCUSING ON ONLINE LEARNING.

OVERALL, YOU JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT PARENTS AND STUDENTS AND STAFF FEEL SAFE WITH THE MEASURES THAT YOU'RE CREATING.

>> SO YOU MENTION A POINT BEFORE THAT I THINK IS WORTH REPEATING ABOUT YOU WANTING TO REACT, BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO OVERREACT.

SO TALK TO THEM ABOUT THAT CONCEPT OF BEING PREPARED BUT NOT BEING OVERLY SO THAT PARENTS ARE NOW FEARFUL ABOUT BRINGING THEIR KIDS BACK.

>> SO WHEN IT COMES TO REACTING, YOU WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE WITH THE INFORMATION THAT YOU ARE RECEIVING AS IT RELATES TO THE VIRUS. WITHOUT A DOUBT.

BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO TURN THE SCHOOL CULTURE INTO A CULTURE OF PANIC.

A CULTURE OF "I CAN'T SIT DOWN RIGHT HERE, I CAN'T TOUCH THIS" BECAUSE THESE ARE KIDS AND THAT'S NOT GOING TO GO WELL WITH THE KIDS.

IT'S GOING TO AFFECT THE WAY THAT THEY NOW SEE LEARNING.

SO YOU WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT YOUR SCHOOLS ARE CLEAN, BUT YOU DON'T WANT A CUSTODIAN GOING BEHIND EVERY KID,

[00:45:04]

EVERY SECOND, CLEAN WALLS AND RAILS.

YOU DON'T WANT THAT. YOU DO WANT TO HAVE A SCHEDULE.

SO THIS IS WHERE KNOWING ABOUT THE VIRUS AND COMMUNICATING AND PARTNERING WITH YOUR COMMUNITY HEALTH TEAM WILL BE EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

HOW MANY HOURS CAN THE VIRUS SURVIVE ON METAL? HOW MANY HOURS DOES THE VIRUS SURVIVE ON PLASTIC? THEN SCHEDULE YOUR CLEANINGS ACCORDING TO THAT.

YOUR HEALTH TEAM WILL BE ABLE TO HELP YOU WITH THAT.

ONE THING THAT WE HAD, THIS IS JUST AT MY APARTMENT COMPLEX, WE HAD A CLEANING LAW FOR OUR ELEVATORS, PLACED IN OUR ELEVATORS.

SO THOSE ARE THINGS, THE LITTLE THINGS THAT WE MAY FORGET ABOUT.

WE DON'T THINK ABOUT PUTTING UP CLEANING LAW IN THE ELEVATOR TO SIGN IN AND WHEN TO HAVE THOSE BUTTONS BEEN WIPED OFF? IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE FLOOR IN A SCHOOL, YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN ELEVATOR.

SO YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THOSE ELEVATOR BUTTONS ARE SANITIZED AND THEY'RE WIPED DOWN.

THIS IS STUFF FOR YOUR FACILITIES, THAT THEY NEED TO BE AWARE OF.

ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT "HOW ARE WE GOING TO CLEAN THESE BUSES?" NOT GOING OVERBOARD BUT MAKING SURE THAT THERE IS A SYSTEM IN PLACE TO WHERE WHEN THE DRIVERS PICK UP THE KIDS, WHEN THEY DROP THEM OFF AT SCHOOL, DO WE NEED TO START CLEANING THE SEATS A LITTLE BIT BETTER, TO ABLE TO SPRAY DOWN THE SEATS IN-BETWEEN? BECAUSE THE DAYS OF JUST SWEEPING THE BUS, THAT'S GONE.

WE'RE GOING TO HAVE TO DO A LITTLE BIT MORE.

SO YOU WANT TO BE VIGILANT.

I THINK THAT'S THE WORD.

YOU WANT TO BE VIGILANT, BUT YOU DON'T WANT TO CREATE A SENSE OF PANIC AND A SENSE OF WHERE THE KIDS DON'T FEEL LIKE IT'S SCHOOL ANYMORE.

YOU STILL NEED TO REMEMBER THAT YOU'RE THERE TO SERVE THE KIDS AND MAKE IT A WELCOMING PLACE.

FOR A LOT OF THEM, THAT'S THEIR SECOND HOME.

SO WHEN YOU GO INTO YOUR HOME, YOU WANT TO FEEL COMFORTABLE AND YOU WANT TO FEEL LIKE YOU CAN BE AT HOME AND YOU CAN LEARN AND GET WHATEVER YOU NEED AND YOU'RE SAFE.

YOU WANT TO CONTINUE TO CREATE THAT FEELING FOR THOSE KIDS.

>> ALL RIGHT. SO ATTORNEY ALEXANDER, I SEE YOU HAVE A COMMENT ABOUT JUST POLICY AND WHAT LEGAL ISSUES WE MAY NEED TO CONSIDER.

>> WELL, YEAH, I THINK WE'LL BE FINE WITH CREATING A POLICY AND MAYBE EVEN UPDATING SOME OF OUR POLICIES BASED ON WHATEVER TEA RULES AND REGULATIONS PROVIDE.

MY BIGGEST CONCERN IS THE [INAUDIBLE] VIOLATIONS OR ANY KIND OF HIPAA VIOLATIONS AND ESPECIALLY WITH THE APP.

SO I THINK IF THERE IS AN APP THAT WE CAN FIND THAT'S COMPARABLE TO THE ONE THAT YOU'VE MENTIONED TO CHECK THE TEMPERATURE THREE TIMES A DAY.

WE WOULD HAVE TO LOOK AND SEE HOW THE PROVIDER OF THAT APP COULD BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH OUR [INAUDIBLE] AND HIPAA LAWS.

IF WHAT AND HOW MUCH INFORMATION WE COULD AS A GOVERNMENT BODY COLLECT FOR THESE STUDENTS.

I'M NOT SURE IF THAT'S A CONCERN THAT YOUTH FACE IN CHINA, BUT THAT'S CERTAINLY GOING TO BE SOMETHING THAT WE HAVE TO CONSIDER HERE.

>> GOT YOU.

>> YEAH, WITH ME BEING AN AMERICAN CITIZEN, I WAS THINKING AHEAD AND I ALREADY KNEW THAT THOSE WOULD BE YOUR CONCERNS.

HERE, NOT CONCERNS AT ALL BUT IT WILL BE YOUR CONCERNS.

>> SO DR. TAYLOR, A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS I HAVE.

SO WHAT DOES THE SCHOOL DAY LOOK LIKE AS IT RELATES TO ENTRY AND END OF SCHOOL AND HAVE YOU HAD TO EXTEND THE DAY DUE TO THE MISSED TIME DUE TO THE VIRUS?

>> NO. FIRST, I'M ANSWERING BACKWARDS.

SO WE DIDN'T EXTEND BECAUSE WE STARTED ON TOP.

WE STARTED EXACTLY WHEN WE SAID WE WERE GOING TO START ON FEBRUARY 17TH, SO THERE'S NO EXTENSION.

SCHOOL DAY, IT'S A BOARDING CAMPUS SO IT IT RUNS THE SAME.

WE REALLY DID NOT CHANGE OUR SCHEDULE THAT MUCH.

THEY COME IN, THEY GET THEIR TEMPERATURE CHECKED AND THEY START THE DAY.

THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS NOW, PRIOR TO COVID-19, YOU DIDN'T SEE OUR KIDS IN MASKS, NOW YOU'RE GOING TO SEE THEM IN MASKS.

AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL DAY, THERE IS A DIFFERENCE, OUR TEACHERS ACTUALLY WALK OUR KIDS DOWN TO THE GATE TO GO TO THEIR PARENTS.

OUR LOWER KIDS, OUR PRIMARY KIDS ARE NOW WALKED.

THEY JUST CAN'T LEAVE THE ROOM AND GO TO THE FRONT GATE.

THAT'S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE BUT OTHER THAN THAT, OUR STRUCTURE IS ALMOST THE SAME.

>> GOT YOU. AS IT RELATES TO TRANSPORTATION, YOU MENTIONED BUSES, BUT DO YOU HAVE BUS STUDENTS AND IS THAT AN ISSUE FOR YOU ALL AT THIS POINT?

>> WE DON'T BECAUSE WE'RE A BOARDING SCHOOL.

SO OUR KIDS BASICALLY LIVE ON CAMPUS.

>> GOT YOU.

>> THE ONES THAT ARE COMING FOR JUST DAY SCHOOL, THEY'RE YOUNGER AND THEIR PARENTS ARE THEIR TRANSPORTATION.

[00:50:04]

>> GOT YOU. SO AS RELATES TO SOCIAL DISTANCING IN THE CLASSROOM, THE HALLWAYS, AND IN TRANSITIONING OF CLASS.

HOW DO YOU ENSURE THAT THEY'RE KEEPING THE SIX FEET OR DO YOU ENSURE THE SIX FEET SOCIAL DISTANCING IN THE CLASSROOM AND IN THE HALLS?

>> WE HAVE ABOUT 50 KIDS IN OUR CLASSROOMS SO SOCIAL DISTANCING AT J SCHOOL IS ALMOST NON-EXISTENT WITH EXCEPTION OF LUNCH.

WE DO ASK THAT THEY FACE ONE DIRECTION WHEN THEY'RE EATING LUNCH.

SO NO KIDS ARE FACED INWARD AS THEY'RE EATING, BUT THAT'S THE MAIN DIFFERENCE ABOUT OUR SOCIAL DISTANCING IN THE CLASSROOM.

AS LONG AS THEY'RE WEARING THE MASK, WE FEEL PRETTY SAFE WITH THE MEASURES THAT WE ARE TAKING BUT THE MASKS ARE ON.

>> GOT YOU. SO AS IT RELATES TO EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES: BAND, FOOTBALL, BASKETBALL, THINGS LIKE THAT.

DO YOU ALL HAVE KIDS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN THAT OR ARE YOU AWARE OF SCHOOLS THAT DO HAVE THEM AND HOW ARE THEY DEALING WITH THE VIRUS AND RELATED TO THAT.

>> YEAH, RIGHT NOW, OUR EXTRACURRICULARS ARE CONTINUING.

OF COURSE, FOOTBALL IS NOT BIG IN CHINA, BUT WE DO HAVE TABLE TENNIS, THAT'S BIG IN CHINA.

SO YOU'RE ALREADY SPREAD ACROSS WITH TABLE TENNIS.

WE STILL HAVE PE, OUR STADIUM IS STILL BEING BUILT, SO WE HAVEN'T REALLY IMPLEMENTED OUR ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT JUST YET SO I'M NOT REALLY SURE HOW OTHERS SCHOOLS ARE DEALING WITH IT.

THE MAJOR BIG SPORT HERE WOULD BE BASKETBALL AND I DON'T THINK TOO MANY SCHOOLS ARE DOING THAT JUST YET.

>> GOT YOU.

>> BUT THINGS LIKE TABLE TENNIS AND JUST REGULAR PE, THAT IS RESUMING.

MY DAUGHTER TAKES KUNG-FU, I CAN LET YOU KNOW THAT HAS NOT STARTED BACK YET.

SO I THINK THAT EVERYONE'S STILL BEING CAUTIOUS WITH THE EXTRACURRICULARS AND NOT IMPLEMENTING THEM JUST YET, JUST TO KIND OF GET TO THE EDUCATIONAL PART IN FIRST WITH THE LEARNING SIDE, WITH THE ACADEMICS.

>> GOT YOU. OKAY. ALL RIGHT.

>> OKAY. ARE THERE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? WELL, THANK YOU SO MUCH, DR. TAYLOR.

I'M TRYING TO BE SURE I'M NOT MUTED, AM I?

>> WE HEAR YOU.

>> THANK YOU SO MUCH AGAIN FOR VISITING WITH US AND I'M SURE IF WE HAVE ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, WE'LL REACH OUT AND THANK YOU, [INAUDIBLE] FOR THE CONTACT, AND MISS ISABELLE, THANK YOU FOR BRINGING ALL OF THIS TOGETHER.

SO DOES ANYBODY HAVE ANYTHING ELSE TO SAY?

>> I JUST WANT TO ADD MY CLOSING COMMENT AS I DID LAST TIME TO LET YOU KNOW THAT MY MANTRA THAT I HELD ONTO WAS 'THIS TOO SHALL PASS', AND I WOULD LIKE TO PASS THAT ON TO YOU ALL.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT IT WILL PASS.

YOU WILL HAVE SOME GOOD DAYS AND YOU WILL HAVE SOME BAD DAYS BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, I STILL BELIEVE THAT TODAY'S A LOT WORTH THE BAD.

AS LONG AS YOU ARE PROPERLY PLANNING, I KNOW THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY.

SO I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH PROJECT 813 AND WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER.

>> OKAY. THANK YOU.

SO NO OTHER BUSINESS TO BRING BEFORE THIS BOARD.

WE ARE ADJOURNING AT 6:54 PM
